Maybe the problem lies in the total lack of early (civic) education on these matters. You can build as many toilets as you want, but it's almost useless if you don't educate the people in sanitation, ecology, respect of nature, respect of individual AND public property, etc... I was on the train one day with a group of students in "Environmental Studies". After lunch on the train, they ALL threw out their garbage out of the train window without a hint of consciousness. So it ensued a conversation about ecology, and their duties as (supposedly more) enlightened citizens on these subjects... It was quite appaling...

For example, making the Indian soldiers of the British raj stay in slums (with no plumbing) vs the British soldiers that had luxurious dorms and cottages. Which means every one of those slums you see are registered properties of their rightful owners originally inherited from indians (mostly soldiers and lawmen) who were co-operative towards the British Raj. Which means they aren't actually illegal and hence, cannot be demolished. Nor can they ever be properly plumbed. They're also given properly built apartments via schemes like the MAHADA programme in mumbai but they never move into their new homes, because those new homes come with maintenance charges, property taxes and responsibilities.

I studied in india for 2 years and ive seen mid aged ladies squating under the flyover and letting it go. Hygiene practices starts at home and basic education is important. Glad to see the gov are taking actions to try and change some of the people’s mentality that is stuck in the past. But highlighting the positives only will not bring change. There’s still a lot of room for improvement. The cleanliness of the toilet should be done by the community and not by the cleaner only.
Correct. Educating is also important. Indian governments are just allowing time to let people start caring about hygiene on their own. Some effort is needed from government also educate people. They are doing it by big budget advertisements but the penetration at lower levels in the society is the need of the hour. Its true that some people squatt in open places. It has deeper cultural complex in it especially in north india that keeping a toilet in home is bad omen for family. This is the reason that specially people in north jndian villages used to go to fields for daily squatt. So deeper education fir upliftment is the need of the hour than mere advertisements. I think it has almost gone now but it still persists in some sections of society.

Many still don’t use the communal bathrooms and prefer the old way. However, with the escalation of social pressure they have mostly changed from doing it guns blazing in the open streets, to in something like a coffee can tin, tuna can, things like that. Geez, back in like 1980, my great aunt in WV had no inside toilet and I absolutely hated going there. Once I had to do #2, she took me to this room and laid out several layers of newspaper to crap on. So at least it was discarded…somewhere. I also had cousins that had to walk like 1/2 mile to get water from a spring, it smelled like tin. Omg, they filled up a metal tub and the whole family got a bath one by one. Pretty gross to be the last one in. It was typical for there to be a Maxwell House can under the bed to pull out n pee in but if u had to go #2, we had to go to the creepy outhouse with the spiders. 🥴 WV was behind the times in certain areas bc lack of interstate, I think. But feces was never out in the open. Anyway, I just cannot conceive of pooping out in the community and leaving it for others to step on like dogshit, but it’s human instead. 😨

Thanks for the amazing tour Karl, but the problem is not the availability of toilets in India. The larger problem is the sanitary hygiene of most Indians when it comes to using public facilities. Just because these toilets are maintained by the government or charitable institutions, people don't maintain the same level of cleanliness while doing their business as they would while using their own private facilities. Such facilities are taken for granted. This is more of an awareness and behavioural problem.
That is true & reflected in many countries. But, some of the people in the 'developed' world have truly shocking habits! Basic, safe sanitation & clean water should be the No.1 priority for any Government.

This feels like some North Korea level of propaganda. I had the unfortunate experience of going to India for work and the first day I was there I saw two guys peeing on the street. Over the course of 5 weeks being there, I saw way more than just those two guys peeing. And yes, all the areas I visited smelled because of the trash, the bodily waste, and who knows what else that was all over the streets. This was in 2023. I told my boss that I would quit if I was asked to ever go back there. What a nightmare of a country.

I studied in india for 2 years and ive seen mid aged ladies squating under the flyover and letting it go. Hygiene practices starts at home and basic education is important. Glad to see the gov are taking actions to try and change some of the people’s mentality that is stuck in the past. But highlighting the positives only will not bring change. There’s still a lot of room for improvement. The cleanliness of the toilet should be done by the community and not by the cleaner only.

Correct. Educating is also important. Indian governments are just allowing time to let people start caring about hygiene on their own. Some effort is needed from government also educate people. They are doing it by big budget advertisements but the penetration at lower levels in the society is the need of the hour.
Its true that some people squatt in open places. It has deeper cultural complex in it especially in north india that keeping a toilet in home is bad omen for family. This is the reason that specially people in north jndian villages used to go to fields for daily squatt. So deeper education fir upliftment is the need of the hour than mere advertisements. The guy literally shows a public service announcement in the form of a mural telling people to stop crapping outside, and I'm supposed to believe that nobody is doing it in the first place. There would be no need to have the mural if it wasn't still a problem. I'm aware that many toilets have been built in the last few years but I'm skeptical that everyone has totally switched to using them in such a short time.
Many still don’t use the communal bathrooms and prefer the old way. However, with the escalation of social pressure they have mostly changed from doing it guns blazing in the open streets, to in something like a coffee can tin, tuna can, things like that. Then they just throw it in the garbage or dump it outside. Progress is progress though right?

Geez, back in like 1980, my great aunt in WV had no inside toilet and I absolutely hated going there. Once I had to do #2, she took me to this room and laid out several layers of newspaper to crap on. So at least it was discarded…somewhere. I also had cousins that had to walk like 1/2 mile to get water from a spring, it smelled like tin. Omg, they filled up a metal tub and the whole family got a bath one by one. Pretty gross to be the last one in. It was typical for there to be a Maxwell House can under the bed to pull out n pee in but if u had to go #2, we had to go to the creepy outhouse with the spiders. 🥴 WV was behind the times in certain areas bc lack of interstate, I think. But feces was never out in the open.
Anyway, I just cannot conceive of pooping out in the community and leaving it for others to step on like dogshit, but it’s human instead. 😨

Thanks for the amazing tour Karl, but the problem is not the availability of toilets in India. The larger problem is the sanitary hygiene of most Indians when it comes to using public facilities. Just because these toilets are maintained by the government or charitable institutions, people don't maintain the same level of cleanliness while doing their business as they would while using their own private facilities. Such facilities are taken for granted. This is more of an awareness and behavioural problem.
That is true & reflected in many countries. But, some of the people in the 'developed' world have truly shocking habits! Basic, safe sanitation & clean water should be the No.1 priority for any Government.
well this problem is not limited to India only. we need to educate people in Pakistan as well. we also face such issues. Educating the masses is the only cure to our problems. civic sense is a good thing to be taught in schools

This feels like some North Korea level of propaganda. I had the unfortunate experience of going to India for work and the first day I was there I saw two guys peeing on the street. Over the course of 5 weeks being there, I saw way more than just those two guys peeing. And yes, all the areas I visited smelled because of the trash, the bodily waste, and who knows what else that was all over the streets. This was in 2023. I told my boss that I would quit if I was asked to ever go back there. What a nightmare of a country.

Oh my, hell yeah. Not only a clean toilet, that is above ground and flushes. But ( most of ) our Western bathrooms also have clean baths / showers. And a vanity / sink to wash ones hands. I am fifty years old, and I have never once until now, thought how lucky we are, to have clean / modern facilities...

Wasn't like that 15 years ago. Was quite unnerving having people stare you down while shitting on the side of the road. And it was everywhere. I remember our taxi driver tell us that they would paint religious iconography on walls in an effort to stop people from using them as toilets. Good to see the government push for better sanitation.
