    If it took more than ten minutes to media blast one wheel there is something wrong with the sandblaster and or improper media type.

      Thank you! It didn't seem to work very well with several coats of paint. The basic Harbor Freight cabinets don't seem to cover much ground very fast. Shops around here seem to want too much to blast a set.

      @@ItsTheChad71 Yes! The shops with blaster booths in my area are crazy expensive. I did not intend to be negative in my first comment. Perhaps look into getting a different media? No clue how much or what type to suggest.

      I had a 1990 Sentra as a daily back in the early 2000's. I media blasted the rims, primed them and painted them with cans of silver high temp wheel paint. They stayed nice for about two Years then the rust belt elements started to take them right back where they started from.

      OEM were 5/16 coarse thread by 3/4 I believe. I think you could also use 5/8 flanged head thread cutter bolts (GM PN 14003421). They also made a slotted version. Some guys use aftermarket SS flanged head as well.

    Hey Chad, love your videos man! Particularly the rally wheel and center cap vids. Restoring my dads ‘81 Chevy Silverado C10. Painted the rims, have my center caps, but the trim rings were lost in time. Not only am I at a loss on where to find them (junkyard is plum out) but no idea on the install and how they’re supposed to stay put on the wheel. Could you point me in the right direction?

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks James! Finding a good original set is getting tough. There are several aftermarket vendors out there you can check out. Classic Parts of America and Speedway motors have the original style 3" deep sets. You can also find several options on Ebay that are 2 1/4 and 2.5" as well. The original and aftermarket sets are held on by compression clips. They just wedge onto the wheel lips. Unfortunately they scratch your newly painted wheels. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching!

    Nice work! I'm probably going to do mine the cheap way anyway but do you know what media you used to blast the rims? Wondering if using sand would have increased the blasting time. Hey Chad. Love the videos! I just painted my wheels today. I had them blasted and sanded them back smooth. I used Rust-Oleum etching primer that went on perfect. I then used vht ford argent silver. It has a powdery textured appearance and feel. Not sure what I did wrong or if the wheel paint just comes out this way. Not sure whether I should wet sand and clear them or sand them down and start over? Thanks.

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That happens every once in a while to me too with the filler or etching primer. Since it’s already top coated, I would hit it with some 600 grit sandpaper lightly to smooth everything out. Try not to take any paint off, just make it super smooth and give it one more coat of VHT. That should take care of it.

    • @ItsTheChad71
      @ItsTheChad71  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Depending on how bad the pitting is, you could use a high build primer to fill them in or even body filler if it’s that extreme. I haven’t used either. Most of the time several coats of fillable primer and several coats of paint hide them good enough. Luckily there isn’t too much exposed since the caps and rings hide a bunch. If you are going for a higher end build, I would look for a better set or a reproduction set. Hope that helps!

    • @georgebarrerajr
      @georgebarrerajr ปีที่แล้ว

      Helps greatly. Appreciate feedback on your thoughts on looks and how to get the best out of them with available resources. One other question I have would be for functionality. In your opinion what measure should I look for to determine if pitting/corrosion exists at the bead surface is too much? I’m sure I could take advantage of prime filler and paint, but would not rely on body filler at this interface. Again, thanks for your comment and opinion.

    • @ItsTheChad71

      Thank you! On a typical set I would use 1 can (1 coat) rust converter if needed, 2-3 cans of fillable or self etching primer. That would include priming the front, back and sides. 2 cans of black if painting the backs and sides. You truly could leave them alone or rust converter if needed. 1 can Dull aluminum or for a more gloss finish VHT rally wheel paint (3-4 coats with some left over). I usually have less than $40 in a set with paint, primer and converter. If you don’t have any sandpaper or chrome polish add a few more bucks. Let me know if you have any more questions. Glad to help!

      I sandblasted and primered and painted mine, I used about half can of each per wheel. so I'd buy 3 cans of each just to be sure. I bought one of those cheap hand held sand blasters from Harbor Freight for like $40, yes it was more expensive and took longer then doing it the "chad way" but I know it will last for years and I won't have to do it again for a while, I was taught to do it right the first time plus I just don't like doing something twice.

      They are the SS 1985 rally wheels, they are the ones with 5 triangles, the wheel is silver gray and the triangles are black, with rings and the centers are plastic, very similar to the ones on the Camaro, with gray stripes and the Chevrolet logo, the problem is that I put them in and they fit into the rim eyebrows but I can't get them to stay fixed, with vibration movements on the road they can come off, what I don't know is if I have to put them in with more pressure or with a rubber hammer

    all this great i must say that their is no wrong way or quickest way to have the same outcome. Me personally to use less elbow grease i think its best use a big storage plastic tub that will fit a rim size depends too, but that will fit for the most part and dump a whole gallon container of EVAPORUST from H.Freight and every so often splash that stuff around while the rim soaks in it flip the rim after maybe like an hour or so depends on how rusty it is or want to remove gunk. then pull rim out rinse with water and wet sand with like 1000-grit to 1500 then after that use alchohol to remove any dust then ready for primer and than your paint of preference.

      1 can of primer if you are only doing the face. 2 if back and sides. 1 can of black if only doing rears, 2-3 if doing rear and sides. 1 can of Krylon or VHT Rally wheel paint for the face. • @ItsTheChad71
