Just wanna say I blacked out my rims to my Lexus and followed every step and it is amazing. The only issue I ran into was the index cards was too light to stay up but I just used tape. Other than that they look amazing
Thank you for the motivation to refinish my wheels! I had some lessons learned: 1. After spending 30 min cleaning a wheel with grinder and not making much progress, I went to a local dustless blaster- $50 and 5 min later the outside of my wheels were cleaner than I could have ever done! 2. It's important to pick heavy stock index cards--mine were too light and were difficult to push into the wheel bead not even considering the wind. 3. I chose Rustoleum Automotive sandable primer--there were a lot of solids I needed to sand and would not recommend it. 4. The time spent on this project was more like 12 hours than 2!
This response is key It's hard to do at-home maintenance when you're new and that fourth point brings up how much more exponential the time sink is. Worth the money tho Doing everything the Christfix way makes me want two cars so I can get this stuff done and still be on the road!
I was a fine finish/spray painter at Disneyland from 1985 until I retired in 2011, and although I've only resorted to the use of spray cans a few times when it was more convenient to not drag out my spray equipment at home, it was a pleasure to see the time and expertise you took to properly prep and then clean the rim with alcohol prior to priming and painting it, the only other thing I would have done would have been to refinish the other side of the wheel, and then clear coat both sides with high gloss Krylon. Overall, a nice video and good craftsmanship which you can be proud to show off.
I've learned a lot from watching your videos Chris. Very easy to understand and very easy for people to do. I adjusted the valves on my Toyota watching your videos. Thank you!
+AngelofDeath3000, some people buy cars for different attributes than you do. We don't all need manhood augmentation so much. Some of us enjoy reliability, low repair costs and fuel economy. Toyotas are good at all three of those things. They are not as good for manhood augmentation or the thrill of high acceleration and handling. They look boring and are average performance. We value what fulfills our desires. I and many others just want cheap, reliable transportation.
Just finished my set of rims Chris based on your instructions. Thank you very much for making this process so simple and giving me the confidence to move forward with this project!!
One of the best DIY videos I’ve ever seen! I followed this step by step and wheels turned out great!! Easy to follow, practical and well put together. Thanks!
@@qualitytouch Overall has held up well. These are my winter tires, so these wheels take a beating from our crumbling Michigan roads. The thin edge near the tires has been compromised in a few spots, probably from salt or gravel, or more likely too close to a curb. Will touch up when it’s warmer. But main part of wheels continue to look great!
Wish I could show you how amazing my wheels turned out after following these steps man. Couldn't believe it. Someone just asked me when did I buy new wheels for my beater car. Told them I painted them doing these steps. Decided to use tape and newspaper rather then note cards. Thanks alot man for real!
That's AWESOME! Thanks SO much for saying this! REALLY helps to know someone had lasting results with it! 😁 Don't want to buy all the paint & angle grinder/brush and do all the work, only to have it look lousy or start peeling off in a few months. Awesome job on your painting, AND sharing your comment! 😅💛
@@heatherclark2623 One and a half years ago i painted the steel rims of my ´89 Trabant with silver spray paint. Because i didnt take my time and only scratched the surface with a hand wire brush and painting two coats without primer the paint started to chip of after 6 months. I got a set of old rims yesterday and do the job right this time
@@homerjsimpson6496 Really? I haven't priced paint at all. Which types were you using? It's great in videos (& comments) when people talk about types they've used & liked; or various tips, like "don't use house paint on a bus" lol. Did you use primer? It's interesting to see the different aspects of this come together, and really nice to see it come out well and then really last.
@@Handyman1199 That's a really helpful comparison, I'm glad you mentioned that. Those six months can really fly by, and it's nice to know that people have experienced even longer lasting results. You have to put deliberate effort into it, and even if it's inexpensive, it's nice to know you're following steps that might allow things to last. 😊
One year ago I painted mine, still looking good! Though I might give it a touch up, since I didn’t add clear coat. As for my headlamps, I followed your tutorial for faded headlamps one year ago too and they’re looking great too and I’m also thinking of fixing the paint on it too with your recent video. Thanks ChrisFix, you made my car look like new again!
First off, love your videos, I just finished a complete brake job on my old 2000 Taurus ses because of your brake video. Now, I was a Painter years ago, and I noticed something that would have helped your wheel look even better. After you finish primering, lightly sand with, say, 400? Grit. Wash, dry, then paint. You see, Primer, when you spray it, if you were able to look at it under a microscope from the side view, would have points sticking up. Go over it very lightly with sandpaper to just knock the points off, and your paint layer will be MUCH shinier. Without sanding, the points stick through the paint layer leaving a duller finish. Try it and compare. Thanks again for the great videos! Rabbit OUT!
Thanks Chris! I wish I'd seen your trick about using the index cards between the tire and the rim to catch any over spray. It would have saved me a LOT of time applying and then removing painter's tape around the rim. That's also a great tip about using the tire gel to clean off any over spray from the tire.
Chris, Your video is brilliant! I've been struggling with cleaning up 12" rims from a 1947 Crosley pickup truck that I am restoring. I spent 8 hours with wire brushes this past weekend and it kicked my butt. Plus the wheels are no where close to being paint-ready. Your tips are a life saver. At $80.00 - $125.00 a wheel for sand blasting and powder coating your way is the way to go. I'll get about doing this starting Saturday and will let you know how it turns out. Bill
First time I've watched this dude!! This guy is positive, educational, and exactly what this world needs more of! Thank you Chris... This gave me hope for humanity! It was damn near perfect and methodical. Great editing!
Love the video Chris, thanks a lot mate. Just did all 4 wheels on my Toyota Hilux down here in Australia! Followed every step and used the same paint, came up so good. Little tip for anyone reading this, I used playing cards and just tucked a heap of rags behind the cards to stop overspray. Worked a treat!
Steel corrugated roofing paint is great for this job. It's designed to last for decades in extreme weather, plus I tried one that doesn't need a primer coat and it's been bulletproof.
You make everything feel so comfortable. Note that I didn't say easy - anyone competent can make their craft look easy. But you make is seem approachable. I've done multiple projects with your tutorials and they've all turned out great. I think I riffed off some of your previous videos when I decided to correct my paint and redo a huge section where all the clear coat and some of the actual paint had come off the A pillar all the way back to the trunk of the car. I did these prep steps and then wet sanded and cut compounded the glossy Rustoleum you used here, and it turned out great! The shine was nice and didn't require me to spend money on five cans of clear coat. And you're right about the paint; one can of Rustoleum replaced five of those shitty dollar cans and the dollar cans never looked right no matter how much I sanded or how many coats! The Rustoleum was so easy and so good for being so cheap. Thanks for doing what you do.
Don't forget to shake the spray can for 2 minutes to properly mix the paint before you put it in the hot water. I would wait at least 8 hours to let the paint really harden before re-installing the wheel. I love the tip about using index cards to shield the tire while painting - some old playing cards could also be used.
high-speed metal wire brush ==> SAFETY GLASSES MANDATORY!!! A guy I work with had his eyeball penetrated by a stray wire from a brush on a grinder. Lost some pressure in his eyeball, needed surgery, and his vision never came back more than about 70%. He says it's still blurry like 3 years later. That's probably as good as it will ever be.
+ExaltedDuck Yep well said, happened to me not a very nice experience at all, especially when there's no one around and you have to pull it out yourself.
+ExaltedDuck I am a safety glasses all the time kind of guy, and I hate face shields...but, whenever I'm using either a wire wheel or a thin cutting wheel(not grinding wheels, just thin cutting ones) I always wear a face shield. One thing I've had personally happen is a stray wire pierced my nose, super not fun. The proof I was doing the right thing came when a few years ago a friend had a cutting wheel come apart on him and a chunk of the disc cut into his neck! The blood he left as a reminder on his shop's floor was horrific to see the next day when I came to check him out with his 7 stitches. Of course, to drive the point home his Dr. said if it had been 2 inches to the left(I think?), it would have cut into his jugular vein and he would have died. From a friggen 4" grinder, now that would be beyond embarrassing! Just a heads up, I'm totally not a safety spaz, I just know enough to respect the power of my tools. I'm certainly not harping away on anyone either, but if it saves one person's face(or life!), then I have been a good human and maybe the aliens will bring me to their shop to wrench on flying saucers ;) Aloha...Chuck
+ExaltedDuck shit I just changed my brake rotors and pads last week and used electric wire brush with no safety glass. had my doubts about something like this happening but didn't know if and where safety glasses were. But I know now that in future I will use glasses
ijustinw Any auto parts store or hardware store will have some. The simple $2-3 polycarbonate ones are fine as long as they're z87 rated. I wear safety glasses 40+ hours a week, and warped lenses really bother me so I got some nice ones by smith optics. I have a set at work, a set in my range bag, and the tinted sunglasses version for driving... I figured having the same set as sunglasses would help me secure the habit of always having them on in the lab at work.
+ChrisFix one time when I was in mechanic class we were changing brakes something was stuck. One of our teachers were using a punch don't remember what for. It broke and flew right past my right eye I wore safety glasses. If I was standing a little more to the right it would hit my safety glasses. Could have lost my right eye that day. TLDR: Wear safety glasses even if you look silly. You could lose an eye
I just happened upon this as I was considering getting plastic wheel covers. This is SO much better, and it allows me to use up some leftover black Rustoleum paint.
I just got a deal on my first car where the place I’m buying it from is refurbishing the wheels so I don’t even need this video, it’s just satisfying and good to know
Didn't work at all for me. They kept falling over and I probably wasted an hour trying to get them to stay up. I eventually just used tape and plastic grocery bags which is what I should have done in the first place. Very frustrating.
i just got a car and was thinking about painting the rims. i didnt know you had this video until i was surfing your channel just now. thank you for making a video on almost every little detail of vehicles you truly are a legend
@@neilross9867 what the heck, I watched it a couple of times to do my wheels last year, now I'm thinking about doing it again on a different car soon so here I am
By far the best part of this video is the scale in solutions! Normally these videos pop out either a heck of a range of luxury tools or the opposite a bunch of street rat DIY tricks. This video has all: No dremel? Get the grinder. No grinder? Get the sand paper. Excellent!
@@chrisfix you inspired me to get a 4th generation mustang! Im planning on getting one but I'm only 13 and have $200 so wish me luck on finding one at a junkyard!
Thanks for the nice, patient-step-by-step video! A few questions though: - Not removing the balance lead and the tire off the rim were just to lower the costs? The car could have worked in the mean time with the spare tire - How durable is this work? - Is this only for summer tires? I am thinking that winter rims are hit much harder with salt and debris
+Andrei Rînea Not removing the wheel weight is for costs. At $15 a wheel to balance it, I figured since it has new tires, it wont need weights for 5 years or so which should be how long this paint lasts (at least if you do a good job like this). This is for any tires, summer or winter. This police car will be used all year round in the toughest conditions.
U are an inspiration to many people...my grandpa could rebuild a car inside and out...and I never learned a thing from him...I regret it everyday!!! You have been an inspiration to get into learning how to fix cars for me....I have a 2010 ford fusion and I would love to one day fix it up to perfection. But I want to learn to do alot of these things myself...love what u do, keep on doing what your doing your amazing!!!!
I've always found that it is advisable to treat rusted areas with some sort of acid based rust converter, like jenolite, wash it off then apply a zinc based primer when it comes to painting over rusty spots, otherwise they rust through again. No matter how much sanding you did.
I think there is something in what you say: There is moisture trapped within the rusted metal that is totally un-dectable by the human eye..... And it will re-surface....despite the best barriers. Think it through: If they started to rust....it is because the moisture was there when the wheel (or whatever) was originally made....it was there when the item was originally painted..under stringently controlled conditions..... a DIY repair is temporary at best.
You also get rust because of paint chips, scuffs etc, allowing moisture to get into the metal. When painting over rust on panels, in addition to treating and zinc primer, keeping the top coat waxed has been a very effective way of keeping the rust back as it's another barrier against outside moisture.
Depends on what wheels came with the car of course. Up until a few years ago, steel wheels where common place on UK cars, but most seem to be alluminium these days
lol yeah it is a lot of fun to watch. I started watching him and i started buying all of the things in his vids and starting working on my car. My wife was impressed with the out come and said it looks like when we first got the car.
I work professionally as a mechanic and a ton of what he says is the correct way of doing things so I admire a lot of the stuff he does. Keep in mind if you don't have a car a lot of information here is useful on nearly anything with an engine from a lawnmower, weed wacker or a motorcycle. For instance the information in this video literally applies to any and all spray painting out of a rattle can. However it is not the same with a professional spray gun.
Great video! Even if I never paint any wheels, your tips on how to properly spray paint was a huge help!! I have never been good at it, and now I see what I’ve been doing wrong. Thank you!! I’m subscribing 👍🏻
If youve ever changed tires before you have no idea how those weights are a fucking bitch to take off sometimes.. Besides once u paint them, the mark will be gone
BboyIllusi0n I'm a mechanic... lol. I change tires every day. They aren't hard to get back on, or take off. and I Guarentee if you went to a local shop they'd balance all the tires for around 30-40$ if you are really that paranoid.
Exactly what I was thinking. Bugged me the whole time he was setting up, then he said he's just going to paint over it and I couldn't watch any further. You can't put a tutorial up on how to do a good job, and do something that amateur.
+Sam Sveistrup Not sure if he is Canadian, but short of government tags on the plate and a cage in the backseat, 99% of people will think that is a ghost car because of the spotlight he has on the mirror.
Thank you, Chris! This is a wonderful idea! I have very cheap plastic rims on my little Toyota Yaris and time to remove them and paint up the wheels. Great paint type you used! Some tips for others: Wear goggles (Harbor Freight $2) AND an apron, short sleeves, shorts. Apron should cover you up. Those wires are going to fly off in all directions and stick in your clothes. They will poke you for weeks!!! Laundry does not get them off and good luck finding them with fingers! You do not want this in your clothes. Harbor Freight sells wire cup brushes for $5 each. They are 4"- 4.5" and will fit a 5" grinder. The thinner one is called a Crimped Wire Cup Brush. Heavier one is called a Knotted Wire Cup Brush. Excellent both. Do not buy a Wire Wheel for Grinder! It is not easy to control. Add a metal washer between the cup brush and disc of your grinder. If you don't, it is very hard to take off later as it is too tight and distance too narrow for most wrenches except the Knipex brand. Small wire wheels and brushes are available for Dremel tools at Harbor Freight as well - great value. Amazon sells Dremel bits. The bit that removes scratches off metal jewelry is a silicone rubber grinding bit in different grits. Think of rubberized sandpaper. I use 150 grit for jewelry then buff it finely. Might work for fine scratches without being aggressive. For very aggressive sanding, you can use Flapdiscs on grinder. This will remove lumps on metal, whereas wire brushes mostly polish metal. Loctite Rust Neutralizer - spray on bare metal. It bonds any rust remaining to the metal and this goes on first. Then primer, then paint. Amazon has tiny tents for spray painting. No matter how far you are from other cars, the overspray will land on them. Yikes! So use these $25 tents that are very handy for sandblasting, spray painting, and fold up to the size of a car windshield cover.
What I really like about you Chris and what made me be a subscriber of yours is that you always think about the broke ass people those who don’t have fancy expansive but proper tools and suggest the old fashioned ones :)
hey chris i just did my first wheel! it was a tedious job but good prep work really helps the end result! thanks for making the video easy to follow im excited to see the finished product when i finish this project tomorrow :)
I have my tire rims that I use on winter time only, and after 14 years it's time to do a good paint job as instructed by Chris; I have started already however the job is not easy as it looks but I have 3 rims almost finished the 1st step, the rust removal. Took me a couple of hours. Next week I m going to finish it so I ll be ready after 14 years these winter rims will look just like new, thank you for posting this video ! Let you know how it came out next week.
If you know someone who is a roofer, get a piece of flashing from them to keep paint off the tire. To calculate how much flashing you need, multiply your rim size (17", 18", etc.) by 3.14 and then add about 4" for overlap, so you get a cone shape.
That's a little exaggeration. I live in PR where we have higher temps and humidity than in FL and I have painted stuff with spray cans in the outside without any problems, even in rainy days. We have a good advantage over colder climates: sun and the high temps which help paint dry fast, in a few hours and with good sun you can put a lot of coats over the wheels. Get a can of Rust-Oleum paint for metal and use that instead of the one shown in the video. That thing adheres really good even without primer and dries very fast.
Takes time and effort but definitely worth it! Thank you, Chris! You saved me hundreds of dollars because I would’ve changed the wheels and the new tires on them.
After a few years i finally came back to this video and repainted the steel wheels on my 2006 corolla. Got rid of the rust and gave it a beautiful gloss black look. Ordering hubcaps to get the factory look again. Thanks Chrisfix.
...Just a little tip : instead of mucking around with all those cards ,,and that gel stuff, you don't need them at all. Once the wheels have been sprayed and the paint has dried, you just need to wipe around the tyre wall with some paint thinners on a rag ...and you will clean off the over spray and get the same result without the mucking around ...and in half the time !!!!
auto overdose for me, the mcdonald ice cream delivery hack is the smartest thing i have heard of... basically, when you want a delivery from mcdonalds, add ice cream so they would delivery it fast
Howdy Chris! I know this is an older video, but I had a question - should we be concerned with the reverse side of these wheels? Surely those are going to be as rusty as the front - or not? And will it adversely affect the job down the road a bit? no pun there? Great video man, this is SO awesome and DIY.
@@timhenderson6473 These videos are made to show regular people how to do it themselves. Taking a tire off a wheel safely is not something most people can do with at home tools. Don't be so dumb.
After all these years it has been fine. You can clear coat the wheels if you want to add more durability. It’s also super easy to touchup any spots that may get damaged if you don’t clear it. Just it it with a light spray after cleaning the wheel.
Propping the wheel upright will also help a lot with your finish. Spray with the nozzle pointing down like that makes it harder for the propellant in the can to do its job.
4:42 I came back from grinding down a seat rail and this exact thing happened to me, I took a break and I felt something in my joggers and I saw one of these, I’m glad I saw this video years ago because I don’t have proper eye protection, but for the mean while I used my old glasses, thanks Chris You are a Legend

Problem solved!!! 😀👍 Dude you are just awesome. Love people like you!!!
I did this to one wheel. Despite liking the end result, I soon realized I had to repeat the process at least three more times. So I killed myself. The Force resurrected me to send this message to you all.
To make this process faster, get 2 jack stands put them under the front and lift the rear with the jack and take all the wheels off. Then when you get to the spray part you can spray paint other tires while you wait for some of them to dry. The waiting part is the most boring and time consuming part

Damn, someone's insecure lmao
+AngelofDeath3000, some people buy cars for different attributes than you do. We don't all need manhood augmentation so much. Some of us enjoy reliability, low repair costs and fuel economy. Toyotas are good at all three of those things. They are not as good for manhood augmentation or the thrill of high acceleration and handling. They look boring and are average performance. We value what fulfills our desires. I and many others just want cheap, reliable transportation.
Thanks for uploading . With very clear voice
I already know this is gonna take me 2 hours per wheel
Factz might as well pay sumbody 🤦🏾♂️
Just finished my set of rims Chris based on your instructions. Thank you very much for making this process so simple and giving me the confidence to move forward with this project!!
How long has the paint held up for?
@@Tropicanax7x Good question
dude is so thorough. I love it. the best part is that he uses common tools or suggests certain slight upgrades.
One of the best tutorials I've seen about anything ever. Very clear, understandable, good audio, and upbeat. Great job! Thank you.
One of the best DIY videos I’ve ever seen! I followed this step by step and wheels turned out great!! Easy to follow, practical and well put together. Thanks!
How has it held up??
@@qualitytouch Overall has held up well. These are my winter tires, so these wheels take a beating from our crumbling Michigan roads. The thin edge near the tires has been compromised in a few spots, probably from salt or gravel, or more likely too close to a curb. Will touch up when it’s warmer. But main part of wheels continue to look great!
How much cans of paint did you use?
Sorry, I don't remember. Maybe 3? I put multiple coats of primer and paint.
Wish I could show you how amazing my wheels turned out after following these steps man. Couldn't believe it. Someone just asked me when did I buy new wheels for my beater car. Told them I painted them doing these steps. Decided to use tape and newspaper rather then note cards. Thanks alot man for real!
That's what I like to hear!
I did follow this video to paint my Toyota Steel rims 4 years ago and the paint is holding strong on the rims
@@heatherclark2623 the paint costs like 2 dollars so even for a few months of nice rims its worth it)
@@heatherclark2623 One and a half years ago i painted the steel rims of my ´89 Trabant with silver spray paint.
I've had this video saved for FIVE YEARS, and I FINALLY did my steelies. They look amazing 🤩
Awesome!!! Nice work!
Rabbit OUT!
Great comment, but he may have wanted to have the more of a matte finish that metallic leaving it at a semi gloss
@@bigwillyn23 Then he could have used a matte black
What the...! does that chrome cap do probably as much as a bumper sticker 🤔
Thanks Chris! I wish I'd seen your trick about using the index cards between the tire and the rim to catch any over spray. It would have saved me a LOT of time applying and then removing painter's tape around the rim. That's also a great tip about using the tire gel to clean off any over spray from the tire.
Chris,
Your video is brilliant!

How long did it take to do all 4 wheels?
Thinking my old Ranger ute might get the same treatment.
excellent job.
I'm an old mechanic of 4 decades.
and that's an excellent job.
thanks for the video
+Kaoss Comkaoss Thank you!
Steel corrugated roofing paint is great for this job. It's designed to last for decades in extreme weather, plus I tried one that doesn't need a primer coat and it's been bulletproof.
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot!
Don't forget to shake the spray can for 2 minutes to properly mix the paint before you put it in the hot water. I would wait at least 8 hours to let the paint really harden before re-installing the wheel. I love the tip about using index cards to shield the tire while painting - some old playing cards could also be used.
Just finished restoring my 1998 rusty steel wheels for winter tires.
Now they look brand new.
Thanks, Chris 😉
high-speed metal wire brush ==> SAFETY GLASSES MANDATORY!!! A guy I work with had his eyeball penetrated by a stray wire from a brush on a grinder. Lost some pressure in his eyeball, needed surgery, and his vision never came back more than about 70%. He says it's still blurry like 3 years later. That's probably as good as it will ever be.
+ExaltedDuck Thanks for your comment ! SAFETY FIRST ! Don't take your vision for granted!
I'm certainly not harping away on anyone either, but if it saves one person's face(or life!), then I have been a good human and maybe the aliens will bring me to their shop to wrench on flying saucers ;)
Aloha...Chuck

Chris is a lifesaver, my rims were rusted to the point where I had nodules.
This video saved me a couple hundred dollars, all I spent was 60 CAD
+ChrisFix one time when I was in mechanic class we were changing brakes something was stuck. One of our teachers were using a punch don't remember what for. It broke and flew right past my right eye I wore safety glasses. If I was standing a little more to the right it would hit my safety glasses. Could have lost my right eye that day.
TLDR: Wear safety glasses even if you look silly. You could lose an eye
Never thought of putting my paint cans in warm water before painting. Great tip!
+SGM 26 Thanks! Little tips like that make all the difference so I try to share!
This vid made me cry from it being so good and informative 😭😭😭😌
LoadDanZ it made me cry because he left the wheel weight.
I just happened upon this as I was considering getting plastic wheel covers. This is SO much better, and it allows me to use up some leftover black Rustoleum paint.
That index card trick is dope

Didn't work at all for me. They kept falling over and I probably wasted an hour trying to get them to stay up. I eventually just used tape and plastic grocery bags which is what I should have done in the first place. Very frustrating.
Rare magic cards work better
I mean, he could have just used masking tape/painters tape, since this is the intended purpose of masking tape.

A few questions though:
- Not removing the balance lead and the tire off the rim were just to lower the costs? The car could have worked in the mean time with the spare tire
- How durable is this work?
- Is this only for summer tires? I am thinking that winter rims are hit much harder with salt and debris
+Andrei Rînea Not removing the wheel weight is for costs. At $15 a wheel to balance it, I figured since it has new tires, it wont need weights for 5 years or so which should be how long this paint lasts (at least if you do a good job like this).
This is for any tires, summer or winter. This police car will be used all year round in the toughest conditions.

I’m doing my wheels Wednesday. I watched like 15 videos... this was the most helpful !!
how long did it take in all? i'll be doing mine soon
You did an awesome job , I am a painter and the advices that you gave about spraying came from a pro right on.
I've always found that it is advisable to treat rusted areas with some sort of acid based rust converter, like jenolite, wash it off then apply a zinc based primer when it comes to painting over rusty spots, otherwise they rust through again. No matter how much sanding you did.
I think there is something in what you say:
There is moisture trapped within the rusted metal that is totally un-dectable by the human eye.....
When painting over rust on panels, in addition to treating and zinc primer, keeping the top coat waxed has been a very effective way of keeping the rust back as it's another barrier against outside moisture.
or just dont use steel wheels hehe carbon fibre, magnesium, titanium, and aluminium are great alternatives.
Depends on what wheels came with the car of course. Up until a few years ago, steel wheels where common place on UK cars, but most seem to be alluminium these days
DarkAngel182 well i didnt really mean stock lol

I work professionally as a mechanic and a ton of what he says is the correct way of doing things so I admire a lot of the stuff he does.
Keep in mind if you don't have a car a lot of information here is useful on nearly anything with an engine from a lawnmower, weed wacker or a motorcycle. For instance the information in this video literally applies to any and all spray painting out of a rattle can. However it is not the same with a professional spray gun.
With all these tricks you should get an old junker and restore it to it's former glory.

Just make a mark on the tire where that wheel weight came off then put it back in the same place once you've painted underneath
+Quaderben Thankyou, at least someone gets it.
+BboyIllusi0n Put the mark on the tyre rather than the rim.

Again - 1 vid - 10 tips to make my life easier! Thanks a bunch Chris! ♥️
Thank you, Chris! This is a wonderful idea! I have very cheap plastic rims on my little Toyota Yaris and time to remove them and paint up the wheels. Great paint type you used!
Some tips for others:
Wear goggles (Harbor Freight $2) AND an apron, short sleeves, shorts.
Did you get it done?
I'm going to watch every single video you have repairing the 1990 Hardbody I bought. Poor truck needs some tlc.

hey chris i just did my first wheel! it was a tedious job but good prep work really helps the end result! thanks for making the video easy to follow im excited to see the finished product when i finish this project tomorrow :)
I like seeing you post your results; did you end up finishing the other 3 wheels? How long did it take your first one, as compared to your last one?
"Paint in low humidity"
How the hell do they expect me to paint crap living in Florida?!
Right lol
That's a little exaggeration. I live in PR where we have higher temps and humidity than in FL and I have painted stuff with spray cans in the outside without any problems, even in rainy days. We have a good advantage over colder climates: sun and the high temps which help paint dry fast, in a few hours and with good sun you can put a lot of coats over the wheels. Get a can of Rust-Oleum paint for metal and use that instead of the one shown in the video. That thing adheres really good even without primer and dries very fast.
Do it in December 😂
ExperienceItStudios - Step 1: Get out of Florida.
Step 2: Follow the steps of the video.
Step 3: Never go back to Florida.
Easy. Drive to the Atacama.

Howdy Chris! I know this is an older video, but I had a question - should we be concerned with the reverse side of these wheels? Surely those are going to be as rusty as the front - or not? And will it adversely affect the job down the road a bit? no pun there? Great video man, this is SO awesome and DIY.

How did the paint job hold up after a tire change?
That's a good question.
You can use an abrasion resistant clear coat on top if you're that worried
After all these years it has been fine. You can clear coat the wheels if you want to add more durability. It’s also super easy to touchup any spots that may get damaged if you don’t clear it. Just it it with a light spray after cleaning the wheel.
@@chrisfix do you have a video on how to touch up the paint? Hehee. Thanks
@@chrisfix I love you mate. Maintenance for automobiles is same like maintaining your body.....
Propping the wheel upright will also help a lot with your finish. Spray with the nozzle pointing down like that makes it harder for the propellant in the can to do its job.

To make this process faster, get 2 jack stands put them under the front and lift the rear with the jack and take all the wheels off. Then when you get to the spray part you can spray paint other tires while you wait for some of them to dry. The waiting part is the most boring and time consuming part
