  • In this video I show you how to completely repaint and restore your old rusty steel wheels to give them a new great look. I go through everything from prep work and rust removal to masking and painting techniques. This is a great home DIY project to make your old rims look great, and hold up to winter. I used Rustoleum Metallic Charcoal Stops Rust spray paint over Rustoleum automotive primer to get this great, shiny and smooth finish. The wheels are for my Volkswagen Rabbit. Recorded with a Canon t3i and edited in sony vegas. Thanks for watching!

    I've done this a couple of times and I'd recommend deflating the tyre which opens up the gap between the tyre and the wheel. You can then paint further into the gap, then when the tyre inflates it covers the edge of the paint.

      luna indigo if you paint professionally you should know that you should always put clearcoat over raw paint to protect it and give it a good shine,I work with an professional car painter and I showed him this video and he said the same thing as I said,ALWAYS PUT CLEARCOAT NO MATTER WHAT.

    I work in a manufacturing warehouse where we paint and laminate.. And we also have a Woodworking shop and a metal shop.. When you spray.. You are supposed to start and finish each stroke off of the rim.. And never in heavy strokes that close.. To apply light coats.. You spray around a foot away and when you want to apply heavier coats.. Always a foot away and just do each stroke a bit slower to avoid runs and orange peel.

    You can use playing cards wedged in the lip of the wheel for a quicker masking solution...works great.

  • @scorpionwins6378
    @scorpionwins6378 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I found it better to use an angle grinder on the surface to remove any rust. Just need to be careful not to contact the valve stem or the tire wall when doing it. The sandpaper should be the secondary step after angle grinding to smooth the entire surface out nicely. Also if you wedge index cards between the rim and the tire it forms an effective shield from overspray instead of having to use masking tape. But to each his own.

    • @elobiretv
      @elobiretv 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah this guy pretty much removed none of the rust, you can see it there when he's using a scotch pad on the wheel.

  • @barneymiller6204
    @barneymiller6204 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice job. Here are a couple of tips I would use. Use 3x5 index cards around the bead of the tire to be your first method of keeping paint off of the tires. Let some air out of the tire and tuck in the cards overlapping all the way around the rim. If you still want to mask it off it makes it easier and less tedious. Next, I would use etching primer on the wheel, this makes a most excellent surface for your final color coat.

    QUESTION : what do I do if I need to make a touch up on the wheel after I spray painted and applied clearcoat? I basically spray-painted my wheels and got my wheels rebalanced (new tires) and got new wheel weights put on. there’s steel showing where the old wheel weights were. Would I simply just spray paint and clearcoat that one area? Would I have to sand and respray the whole wheel?

    • @CashedOutCars

    Nice job on the wheels. I went through the work of doing this last year on a set of winter wheels. In the middle of winter I ran my car through a car wash. After washing, I did a walk around and noticed the paint was coming off the wheels ONLY by the zinc wheel weights. So frustrating after all the work of prepping/painting! I'm wondering if the zinc wheel weights were acting as an anode. Has anyone else had this happen?

    • @danieljanca

  • @colin5064

    How much of a problem do I create if I do not mask off the rubber tire when painting black paint , rubber is also black! Does it hurt tire? Or is allowing overspray just look too tacky? Would be a lot easier? Also be easier if we demounted rubber tire, like at time when new tires r being installed!

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't spray right onto the tire since the texture and color won't be the same! The risk of painting before they're mounted is it can get scratched while mounting, but most reputable and experienced shops should be able to do that no problem

      +Jack Mok yeah you can paint both sides as long as you get all the brake dust and stuff off the inner part

    My understanding of was is its acidic and holds the acidic crap from the road. Resulting in a leaching into and breaking down the paint/metal. Any thoughts?

      What do you think is acidic, the salt / road treatment use on roads?

    • @DTGrosz
      @DTGrosz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wax is Ph of 8 or higher - stuff off the road; salt, calcum and bugs--- and its traped in the wax and gets even more acitic. If you look at a wax surface under a microscope - looks like a sponge. Anyone with an expensive sports car will never wax it.
