If you have a 97-99 expedition/f-150 with the 12mm wheel studs your lug nut torque is 100 ft/lbs but if you have a 00-02 expedition or 00-04 f-150 you have 14mm wheel studs and your lug nut torque is 150 ft/lbs, just wanted to let everyone know who is doing this repair. Great video!

exactly what m. mcchesney said below... thanks, I would not have approached this with as much confidence if it wasn't for this video. doing the ball joints and tie rod ends on my 96 Dakota. the front axle is in the way, and I was nervous about taking it off, but not any more!!!! thanks again!

Great video. Found that the bolts on the diff side had some type of thread locker on them; so after busting my elbow getting the first one out; added a little heat with my soldering torch about 5 sec. After that they came right out.
    Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for sharing! I would not have approached this project if the video didn't show how easy it was. I did it yesterday in a couple of hours. Recommend verifying the bolt sizes before you get started. Glad I did, as some of the bolt sizes on my 2001 F-150 were different that those described in the video. (Mine required a 12mm 12 point socket vice 13mm.) Also, having deep sockets will make removing the stabilizer links much easier.

Normally a vibration from the front drive shaft is related to it being out of balance or the u-joints being bad.

do you have to take the balljoints out? Top bottom or both. I see that you took off the tie rod end also. It would be cool to have that info in the video or in the description. Thanks for the great video! The Tools to do those things would also be handy to have.

Nice video very informative. I have a 1998 f150 4x4 5.4 l. I was planning on replacing my cv axle. My manual says you have to remove the steering knuckle. It doesnt appear that is necessary to do. The manual also stated you have to remove the fan and clutch to replace the radiator and that was not the case. Any info would be much appreciated. Best regards.

A previous poster asked if it is necessary to unlink either of the ball joints (upper/lower), but your answer was to refer to the video. Is it necessary to remove either ball joint? Also, in the video, you show the tie rod removed, then installed, but you make no mention of this. Is it necessary to unlink the tie rod? Can you answer my two questions without telling me to refer to the video? Thank you.

great video.I have a 1998 f150 which I took to the dealership to have a clutch replacement done. afterwards I had a new vibration and he said that I needed my front driveshafts replaced. I looked and the front driveshafts look good without any torn boots or leaks. is there a way to examine or test them? Thanks

Is this process similar for both driver and passenger side. Also will locking the 4wd in keep the axle from spinning freely.

  • @joshualara9940

My axle snapped at the wheel hub how do I get the shaft to stop spinning so I can get the bolts on the other end off?

  • @JamesPalen
    @JamesPalen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for the video. Is it necessary or optional to grease the splines of the new cv axle shaft? I changed the passenger side a couple months ago and now realized I have to also do the driver's side, but did not grease the splines on the last one (just slid the splines into the hub dry). Should that be of any concern?

Another question can a 99 Ford Explorer 4x4 get stuck in 4x4 high or low? And how can I get it to normal .. another one when I turn my wheel I hear gears grinding what could be going on? I thought it was the axles but those are fine.thanks

I have an 01 expedition at low speeds when warmed up when I turn I hear and feel it grind or rub , it’s not the tires I checked when I straighten out it goes away could this caused my bad cv joints?

You shouldn't have to remove the ball joints. You may need to undo the tie rod from the knuckle for extra clearance. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

We have a video on the 97 Ford Expedition that shows you how to remove the CV axle, this might help you out. copy & paste PpdI1BNkow8 into TH-cam search.

Sometimes if you put the vehicle in reverse and back down the road a little bit in reverse it will unlock the 4WD for you. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Hi Allen, Yes it should be pretty much the same procedure on both sides. I'd recommend doing this in with the vehicle in 2WD. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Is this axle related to the A4WD module? I mean, if it's broken will the A4WD work? I ask because my Expedition makes a "cracking'' metal to metal noise when I turn right or left.
