First video I've seen where the wheel/tire, brake caliper and such were left alone. Makes sense to me to leave as much untouched as possible to prevent more damage. Sway bar links are easy enough to replace and make the project easier. You made it look so much easier than the other ones. Thanks for sharing this information with us.
Looks like that is possible because of that flat plate which can slide clear instead of the shaft having to back out of a diff/tranny unit like most steel critters.

No need to even take off swaybar link. I have done it a few time on my 2500, For some reason my truck likes to eat drive axles on the drivers side only.
@@1969darr you have to do what you have to do. It depends. I've got a 2005 2500 I've changed em on both sides I bet 6 times. They come out and back in easily with the shock out of the way. I've got a 1994 k1500 and you cannot get it out without taking that link out of the way.

I have to do this so thankfully you show something thats like an everyday driver in the rustbelt cuz other channels show a truck with no rust. I have hand tools so this should be fun!
Solid video! I'll add my experience to what you've presented. 1) Take off the engine/oil pan skid plate by removing the four 15mm bolts. This offers more clearance to maneuver the CV axle in and out. 2) As an alternative to pulling the sway bar end-link, you can remove the shock. The combination of those things should yield plenty of space to remove the CV shaft. Happy wrenching everyone!
Man, it's nice having a lift. The last time I did front end work I was on my back in the driveway with a couple of China Freight jackstands holding up my truck. I think I've replaced the sway bar links at least twice each side so far. That's what you get when you live on a road that's more pothole than road I guess.
I used to get those trucks brought in often with broken bolts from the customer trying to do it themselves and driving it in cockeyeyed. Not so many anymore but man people do love snapping those bolts. Great vid great tip on making sure it’s even!
Nothing better than a laundry sink in the shop for washing up in. I have one in my shop too. Get in there and lather up all the way up your forearms and rinse off without getting the stuff everywhere.
Fish and stir fry looked great and made me hungry. Couldn't believe what the underside of that 2500hd looked like, thought mine was rusty underneath from ohio salt, that truck looks like it's been through salt hell underneath. Your choice of replacement cuss words are always good for a laugh!

Thanx! I just bought a 97 k1500 Chevy and need new boots. So now I’m going to just change out both sides with cv joints and sway bar end links. And new shocks cause that makes it easier to remove as well.
Thumbs up video! Watch now mostly for tool and technique discussion. At 11:15, your customer will need an upper ball joint on the knuckle and probably outer tie rods very soon. The rubber looks broken on both.
I've used them style links on my 2011 Chevy and I had to warranty them 2 twice one side would only last a few months and snap off and then I would warranty it and then the other side would go, so I changed to the standard moog links with the rubber bushings and never had a problem again.
That was an easy job. I had no end of trouble swapping the right hand driveshaft on my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso (French minivan). I documented it on my channel and it ended up being a 4 part saga. I had to dismantle more of my front suspension and brakes to be able to get the outer CV end free so I could remove the entire driveshaft. I'll need to replace the left hand one as well which should be a bit easier. We have the same corrosion issues over here in the UK when the local councils put salt on the roads in the winter months when the temperatures drop to freezing point.

Love these videos, I have an 07 2500HD (gas) with 150000 miles so I know there is a good chance I will be doing this before long. I bought the truck 7 years ago from a guy that used it on the "pipeline" so I know it's had a tough life before I got it.

I think you do very good and work and you are very detailed oriented for example, the way you cleaned up the flange and added some spray for ease of installation and maybe rust minimization. I wonder if other shops are that detail oriented and actually do a good job especially after charging what they charge some of them. Anyway, great work always.
I really like the fact that you add protection to the cleaned plate, it all helps to make it a simpler job next time :-D. You cant stop the salt damage, but it can be slowed down a little.
OK, I can now "simmer down" knowing you are changing the other link...lol. I have had the same wobble issue with aftermarket shafts. Particularly the "Hey I've got these CV shafts, how much to put them in?" variety. Another important video sir. Thank you. Can't count how many times I've seen these done the hard way. IE: got half the front end disassembled then relies they didn't have to go that far. Keep fighting the good fight brother...
I'm amazed that axle just slid out of the hub like that. Here in one of the mildest climates you'll ever find I almost always have to break out the air hammer to get em moving.

I remember removing the cv joints on a 95' k1500 suburban without disconnecting the ball joints but you made look do easy 😁
