Complete solution is possible however depression is like someone who has broken his/her hand or foot, even though the bones are gonna be joined , it makes that person prone to bone fracture in the future, so once someone gets depressed, he/she is prone to get depressed again in the future, but this doesnt mean it's never cured, like in analogy of bone we wont say the bone is still broken.

Sometimes what causes our depression are things that can't exactly be wiped away... For instance just one example of the many, the depression and anxiety of simply being alive, knowing life seemingly doesn't last in the bodies in which we inhabit, even if not it's not like we have all the answers and ability at all times... and THAT in of itself can be depressing... And though life may seem, and be, unfair at times, life is the platform itself for us to even be...so though it can be rough, it's all we got(nevermind an afterlife, RIGHT NOW is where you are, so try to make Good of it here)...so we might as well try to make the best of it... That doesn't mean always doing ANYTHING it takes to get that feeling to go away, any means isn't always right, cause that's what causes addiction to things like drugs or anything you could fill yourself with or do that may not exactly help you... because you're trying to cover up your base problems with something that just makes you feel different, when in reality you're still in the same pot... Not to mention, but some depression comes with reason...depression is just like a sensor, and when the sensor is going off, something is off, so it gives you the idea, "hey, perhaps I should do something about this." or at least take note as to what exactly the bad feeling is, and try to aid yourself with understanding, at least....again..some things you can't exactly just get rid of, but...what you can do is be aware, and just try to RESPECTFULLY, to yourself and others, try to make a positive difference.
When I get down about things IN life, not necessarily the platform of life itself..but the things that make me feel bad ABOUT IT...I understand it's only ever the things in life that make life hard or bad, so, it keeps me more positive about life itself...I LOVE LIFE..I just don't like some things that seemingly ruin GOOD life/times, so...instead of just wasting away in Hell, which I'm no stranger to doing at times, I try to keep myself focused on making this life in which I live better, by giving it things that WILL make it better, not a cover up like drugs/altered state, but actually... You want life to be good and to deserve the good that comes your way? Want what's Good for everyone...try to do what's good when you can... And I like to say THINK, because though our minds scramble sometimes and it's hard to think without spiraling into a pit, to THINK is a power potentially very useful thing....so....THINK, but remember, even if you run into pockets of deep thought that is scaring you...you're ok...YES IT CAN BE VERY SCARY, just remember, even if things were as bad as you think, what good are you dead or going crazy?....You're not alone my friends...
    THINK...
    beGood
    DOgood
peAce. May we all find our way to a better place with better actions and ways of being. Thank you.

Thanks for this video. I have been dealing with clinical depression for a long long time and I think I have been looking for a cure all this time. I was sure I could be cured if only I could find the right medication. This was denial, faulty thinking and just plain not wanting to take responsibility for doing what I needed to do to help myself. I spent many years in Adult Children of Alcoholics and learned about recovery. Your video made it crystal clear that I need to look at my depression as uncurable like alcoholism and that I need to work daily at managing the symptoms just like in a 12 step program. Thank you for making this analogy. As they would say in my ACOA group, "It works if you work it!"

    • @DouglasBloch
      @DouglasBloch  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Na was my initial reaction to the question, think iv had enough years to qualify as disthymic , then my answer made me think how does one differentiate between the two, wavey line vs less wavey line,
About the social antidotes ,i find they have a high risk of making the symptom worse, what i find works when iv got a migraine free, clear enough head to think in 3 dimensions, is metalwork, it combines excircise with creativity, with added risks of cuts, splinters, burns, electric shocks and temporary blindness which reminds of being alive counters numbness , if iv got a fuzzy head i just end up tidying.

I'm very strong against them because I've tried a few and was unsuccessful so I've opted out of prescriptions. My biggest disability (and when i say disability I mean disability) is sleep. I average maybe 2h a night sometimes less and I fight for that. The lack of it has totally dibilitated I and my family's life for the last 6 months I've never experienced anything like this before in my life. The psychological pain is excruciating and torture. Thanks for doing this video Douglas it is soooo needed! The more I talk about my illness the more I realize how everyone is ignorant about how it works. I have met so many people who have have panic attacks and they tell me “well I am fully recovered but you (me) you can live free of depression”. I now believe that 80% of people have some sort of illness and most people do not admit to it. It frustrates me because they look at me like I have a problem and they are normal. I hate to break it to you but if you had some sort of mental breakdown in your life you have something that needs constant care and attention (and it’s not bad) , but at the same time I tell myself “well if they believe they are cured than who am I to judge?”. I just don’t want to be told by the sick that I can/ should be doing this and that, when I am honestly going through my own process and accepting my condition as it is. Have you heard this “I had it but I am cured” from “normal” people?

Makes sense to compare depression to other chronic physical conditions that are never cured but managed. Stretches of remission are possible too. I've found sleep and nutrition are the most important factors. Switching to a low fat, plant based diet made a big difference in reducing my depression. Also largely cured my chronic acne, so I think depression, acne, and many conditions, are inflammatory conditions that can be managed with anti inflammatory diet; the opposite of the standard western diet, which is high in meat, processed carbs, saturated fat. I follow the Dean Ornish diet: fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, soy products, moderate dairy and eggs, no meat.

Those are symptoms of depression. You might want to think about medication. You might also want to get your thyroid checked by your medical doctor, as low thyroid can also cause those symptoms. So can low testosterone. So go to your doctor and rule out medical causes, while you are gettingmental health treatment.

You have to reach out for support as best you can. It is hard to heal in isolation. Even having just one confidant, such as a family member, friend, therapist, etc. can make a difference. In the United States, there are outpatient mental health programs that offer structure and connection. The one I attended after I was hospitalized made a huge difference in my recovery.

the decease model have a big problem Doug. The evidens is non existent
Pre-drug depression study finding states it very clearly: It's a cyclical decease yes, but relapse were much much lower, then it is today were we have all these great coping skills and drugs! You got sick one time, and that was it
So either there is something wrong with the approach you take to mental health in general Doug, or the drugs are keeping people in this endless loop of symptomes.
I think it's a bit of both. It's you as a counsellor that have to change. Just me two cents :)

Douglas Bloch I should clarify. I am on no medication right now. About 3 months ago I started getting fatigued and losing sex drive. Now in the past couple weeks I have noticed many other symptoms like changing moods and trouble concentrating. I have begun using services that the university I attend provides. I am going to therapy once a week for 50 minutes and have an appointment with a psychiatrist in a couple days to get on medication. What I feel is still mostly physiological so from my understanding it seems like medication could help me.

how depressing...you have a disease you will never heal, just manage symptoms...this is just great news. what is the point in life if we're just going to live with chronic mild depression - doctors give us no hope - this is what all doctors say- management- like what's the point. like honestly they should give us opiates..anything to help - like if we are so depressed we want to die, isn't it better to risk us becoming addicts ? let us decide ?? I can manage opiates - I did before. and it did cure me. like now I have to do ECT cause it's safer ? clearly not - damages memory and brain...but it's safer for the doctors to keep their licenses.

Most chronic diseases such as asthma, Parkinson’s, cancer, heart disease, etc. are diseases that are managed. However people can still live very good lives. The same is true of depression. And if you have clinical depression such as myself, you can go many years in between episodes. I went between 1997and 2015 without an serious symptoms
