  • Living with depression, anxiety, and negative thoughts each and every day can feel like a merry-go-round of pain that is seemingly impossible to get off of. What if there was a quick, prescription-free method that was powerful and effective at attacking the roots of our negative thoughts? What would a clear step-by-step blueprint look like? How can we begin walking on a path towards feeling great and eliminating our deep-seated depression, anxiety, and negativity? On this episode of Impact Theory, psychiatrist, cognitive behavioral therapist, and author David Burns joins Tom Bilyeu to discuss such matters and more as they explore the incredible and real world practical effects of cognitive behavioral therapy and how you can begin applying it your life today to overcome depression, anxiety, and negativity. They discuss the power of cognitive behavioral therapy, the connection between your emotional thoughts and neurochemistry, the power of T.E.A.M. therapy, techniques to overcoming your negative thoughts, and the types of resistance and roadblocks we create for ourselves in therapy and recovery.

When you are having a panic attack in public, look into the eyes of strangers and seek to see the fear, sadness, loneliness and regret that hides within. It's the quickest way I found to realize how close we all are, and that sense of closeness can eliminate your own anxiety with the immediacy of a lightning strike, replacing it with empathy.

This is so important. I once met a psychiatrist who told me that healing from personality disorders was impossible. I think these "doctors" who do not understand the healing/recovery should be removed from doing psychotherapy. They do more harm by convincing patients that they are condemned for life.

    • @lemonjuice3551
      @lemonjuice3551 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yeah, even if it is true that a patient isn't likely to change I don't think they should be told so in the spirit of condemnation. I can see how it could be useful (if done gently) though, in helping someone to stop hating themselves in vain. I would only apply that to personality though - not to someone's thoughts and feelings. I say this as someone only just learning to love themselves, despite all their flaws.

@@lemonjuice3551 but this is absolutely not true, there is no personality disorder that people haven't recovered from. How can you accept change in thinking without accepting change in personality? Personality is basically the way you think about things, which determines your behaviour. The only patient that cannot change is a person that doesn't want to change - or someone who doesn't have the right tools and method to change.

What I discovered about anxiety is groundbreaking. At the heart of all anxiety is a desperate need to CONTROL. What I mean is behind any anxious thought there is a need to control other people's thoughts, reactions, actions etc. To further explain by an example, say someone is anxious about a certain situation, in their mind there is this game going on where the outcome is to be determined by the anxious person. The only way out of this game is to release control of the what the outcome should be. The anxious person will say "ok I will give up control or give up my projections, but what about controlling my own side of the thought game". Well as I discovered the minute you give up your projections and allow external situations(people, events etc) to determine their own outcomes, immediately your own mind starts to rest. Give up control!!!!

@@QuietlyMagnetic It's actually the lyrics to a band called Muse but I quoted it as the singer's line.
It was a lot of verbal/emotional abuse and neglect; being told I'm stupid, talentless, to shut up and stay out of sight which, of course, led me to feeling too insecure to have friends so any group I hung around just neglected me, as well.
However, I think if I had been physically abused the message would have been the same, no? That "I am not worthy of anything or anyone". Therefore, the line is kind of just that thread you hold onto as a means to make things a little more okay, to try harder, and to give yourself reason to look at the situation in a way that allows you to make all this bullshit your strength, what drives you forward into improving yourself (even if what's "wrong with you" is just a falsehood) and getting out of the situation, to get stronger in that way, rather than allow the situation to push and hold you down.
Sure, it's not the best way to figure out a situation. I mean, what was happening was not okay and there is not justification for it, but when it's all you have, you make it work.
I can't help but think of David Goggins; I feel that listening to how he looked at everything and how he got out of his situation would make more sense. It's *kind of* the same thing, I feel there are a lot of similarities in how he tackled life and how I perceived that quote.

Anxiety and depression is caused by either stressing over yesterday, worrying about tomorrow and not being present. Mindfulness and gratitude are the cure for depression. Also I will add that if you are thinking about yourself and your own situation or needs too much, that will lead to depression. You have to help someone else instead in some way. Even if it is to tell them they look nice or have a nice smile, or help someone solve an issue, or lift someone's spirits etc. Your depression will melt away. You have to know we are not here to consume, we are here to help each other. We need to get back to basics pre-tech is better. Pick up a phone, make plans to hang with a friend, go visit someone grieving or in a hospital sick or just someone that could use a friend. If you are all about you all the time...it gets old quick.

The post partum friend story reminded me of what I did for myself when I was struggling with PTSD after an abusive relationship. I did video journaling expressing my feelings and what I was going through, struggling with, and wanted so I wouldn't have any judgement, yet I had an outlet and may use it in the future to show my personal journey. When I watched them, I ended up feeling empathy and acceptance for myself as you would a friend or a character on tv. Perception is EVERYTHING. 💜

I was attending my last of four levels math university class convinced I would finally fail that one since I hadn't failed the others but always carried bad marks in math since 6th grade. I did fail my course. My teacher at the time said in class : "If you fail as a student you'll never be a good math teacher." I was mad so I wrote him a letter explaining how I will understand better my math students because I will feel empathy toward their difficulties which I never met through all of my math teachers in the past including him. He asked me to meet him after each of his next classes to explain again what I wouldn't have understood. I went once. It took only one time because at our first meeting he said: "Explain to me what you did understand in today's class." At the end of this first meeting he concluded : "I don't know why you are here because you obviously understand everything." It boosted my confidence. I never went to meet him again afterwards and I finished with an A+ for the first time in my life at the most difficult math class I ever took. Thank you so much for this interview.

I believe there is also a significant implementation of game theory here. Any time we use positive internal dialogues to reframe our conflicts, in a sense replacing the hostility of our learned internal voices, we are contradicting the social isolation that is often connected to trauma carried over from years of unprocessed social abuse. We embody the voice of a loving parent, when perhaps we lacked that growing up, and the mind makes no distinction between internal and external, it just accepts the fact that we want to help ourselves and that sense of compassion manifests, healing us instantly.

I am 68 years old. I never had a problem with anxiety or depression, my entire life, until the doctor prescribed (for 18 months) medications that I was allergic to. Metopropolol, lisinopril, losartan, and amlodipine (consecutively). After that, the doctor said I had "white coat syndrome" and it was raising my BP. Then she prescribed (consecutively) zoloft, desipramine, lorazepam, and citalopram. All that did was give me severe insomnia and tinnitus.
I had a collapsed lung recently, sending me back to the doctor. She asked me how I lowered my BP without meds.
I am still battling depression. I am hoping your book helps me.

This was amazing! I am so grateful that you are exposing your audience to a therapist that uses an evidence based, therapeutic technique that most of us use in a daily basis to help our patients. It’s important to recognize, like Dr. Burns said that change is challenging and not necessarily quick... I’ve been a therapist for over 15 years and worked with hundreds (maybe by now a thousand patients 😳) We are all complicated and have these things called “feelings and core beliefs” that actually dictate our thoughts.... when we feel or believe something, it’s not often rational.... but it’s hard to convince your brain/body/mind of that it FEELS, you can also BELIEVE that it is true (even when all the evidence points to it’s not true) If you have anxiety, it’s not just your thinking process, it’s your brain/mind/body’s reaction to sensory input (internal and/or external.) Anxiety, for example comes from our core feeling of fear that gets triggered by our senses and then our brain tries to make sense of it, that’s our conscious thought and yes you can and should challenge the validity of those thoughts but don’t feel bad that you can’t! Dr. Burns has helped a lot of people and his work is life changing but if it doesn’t work for you please see a therapist to assess your individual needs and come up with a plan for you that helps you. Tom, you should have Nancy McWilliams on your show, she is an amazing psychotherapist who has written several book on therapy. I think your audience is ready😉

Thanks Tom for sharing these incredible interviews, I've been there almost since the start, and your consistency no matter the circumstances in the world is mindblowing, and highly appreciated.

Wow. This was amazing content! Thank you for your work, Dr. Burns. I am starting with one of these techniques immediately: Imagining being as good in interviewing people like Tom Bilyeu is.

I adopted two brothers, 10 & 11, orphaned by addiction 3 years ago. As a rookie mom in trying times I really appreciate the refresher on, "it's ok to have mixed feelings about parenting, in fact it's normal." Good stuff.

What a truly amazing honorable thing to do, adopt not one but two children with... issues... I can only say WOW!! Some ppl deserve a Gold medal. I know you will be blessed in ways you won't believe, just wait and see. :What you sow so shall you reap". Anyone with a heart ❤ as big as yours will get it right believe that.

@@TheMothers3 Such kind words...💖 I appreciate the support. Recovery is not linear...it's more like a cha-cha.
And I'm a darn fine dancer. Thank you for helping me remember that. You did good.

@Stephen Jones I don't think I will. They're 14 & 16 now & they are truly great people. I wrote this in the very early days, right after their mother completed suicide. It was a tough time. But thank you for your concern my friend. You have a great day now.
