I’m 52 years old and there have been many times that I thought, OMG I’m never going to get out of this situation…only to then make it out of that situation. I just got a new job where I need to get up early. I’ve now developed sleep anxiety because I don’t think I’ll ever get any or enough sleep. I’m currently in a battle with my mind once again. I’m going to start repeating “this too shall pass” and “one day at a time” because I have a tendency to think this will be forever, even though I’ve gotten past stuff like this before. Thank you for your insight, Douglas!

I'm going through a divorce. Our separation has been going for 3 years. My children are kept from me. My dark days are a day by day survival. The mornings are a new start for me... However, for my sanity sake I'm willing to walk if she just sign the divorce papers. It's her control over me that she doesn't want to give up...
    I'm waiting to become a diamond...💎

I have had depression for over 13 years and I've always had intense nerves, and I'll be 28 this year -- I find the worst thing you can do, is sit around all day, and its such a catch because I'm unemployed because of my feelings. The work of Gurdjieff has helped me a lot in the last few years since I've discovered him, he spoke about mankind as being asleep, we sift through our imagination all the time, we identify with both negative and positive things, we express negative emotions at the drop of a hat, we become personalities and lose our essence.

I’ve been struggling with anxiety due to a lot of trauma in my childhood. I learned recently that childhood trauma causes people to process things differently. This was enlightening to me but also made me feel hopeless because I can’t undo those experiences and change my brain. I feel forever doomed to live in a state of fear (either mild or severe), and now I’m depressed on top of it.

Please read the classic book "Feeling Good" by dr. David Burns. It will show you how to recover from your trauma and live a life of joy.

The brain has something called Neoplasticity, which means it can change. There are therapies that can help to facilitate this. One of them is called EMDR. There are therapists who specializes in treating trauma and books that show how. You might want to take a look at the books The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van der Kolk and Waking the Tiger by Peter Levine

Are you related to Bonnie by any chance? She was among my favorite and most respected teachers when she came to teach medical science academy at our high school. To manage to both pass the bar exam and earn a doctorate in one lifetime is so impressive. She was aware of the leading research at the time and wasn’t dismissive of information that went against conventional wisdom. We learned about research into the non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, CBD, and how it was helping treat patients with degenerative nerve diseases. It was helping to slow the breakdown of the Myelin sheath around nerve cells. This was way back in ~2004 when cannabis was still very illegal and labeled as having no medical use. Just a cool memory that came to mind. If you are not related, my apologies! Thank you for your insights on mental health. I’ve been using the “splash cold water on your face” method you mentioned in another video and it feels like it might help to start calming down my nervous system when I’m getting upset. I’ll let you know once I’ve tried it a few more times. Thank you!

Douglas I have tried 5-MeO-DMT for my depression and anxiety and it has helped me IMMENSELY. I tried it 7 years ago and I have never gotten hospitalized since then:). I recommend you try it but u MUST come off ALL medication for at least 6 months before trying it. If you don’t it can actually trigger a psychotic episode and that can obviously worsen your mental health. Good luck:)

I graduated college 4 years ago and I have had a difficult time applying for jobs because of my lack of experience or related experience. I switched from Communication Studies which was my major to the medical field and got a job for two years in phlebotomy. I quit last year and am in school for MRI technology. But lately since COVID-19 happened I’ve been worried I made the wrong choice in leaving a secure position with health insurance. I wish I could also try the communication field but I don’t have enough skills or confidence during interviews. I really wish I had a very specific guide to get through this difficult time and job hunting. Looking for jobs was hard enough before COVID but now I anticipate will be even worse with how many job seekers there are. I’m terrified and feel like I’m having an existential crisis often

vi-tal adj. 1. Necessary to existence or continuance; essential. Dear Mr. Bloch, A "wow" experience occurred as I opened my Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary N-Z in search of its definition for "vital". The book's binding bent to expose, without any page flipping required, page 763 which contained "vital" amongst its main entries. Gobsmacked, I exclaimed, "Wow!" While thinking out loud is nothing new to me, my reaction to the event prompted a chuckle, or "humor". Right away I wanted to write to you, "setting goals". Feeling "vital", essential, is exactly what I sense is missing during my most symptomatic episodes. Thank you ("gratitude") for the direct and simple phrasing you've given to The Goal, and for providing a list of possible actions I can take to improve my state of mind. I put together a small shelving unit as I listened to you, providing myself with sense of "fulfilling work".

Not major depression (though I’ve obsessed about having depression recently!) but an OCD sufferer. I’ve been recovering from a difficult relapse after seven+ years with no symptoms, and while I think I’m pretty far along on my path to recovery at this point, there were times when my intrusive thoughts told me I wouldn’t be able to cope with my OCD returning and that I’d kill myself before I got better (this has been my core obsession the last six weeks, there hasn’t been anything approaching actual suicidal thinking or ideation and thankfully my therapist agrees with that assessment).
The one thing I always told myself that helped me when I felt overwhelmed by anxiety and OCD, and something that I thankfully got to learn in junior high through experience, is exactly this. This too shall pass. Keep moving forward. No hell can last forever, even if it feels like it. There were a lot of other lessons learned about taking care of myself too, but this one was the one that really gave me hope and kept me feeling anchored even while my OCD did its damndest to convince me “no really, you’re suicidal and you just don’t know it/won’t admit it”.
After watching your videos, I’ve learned that not only are my thoughts crap and not worth worrying over, but the only real fear is the fear of being unable to cope. And after battling untreated OCD for three years as a teen, cancer as a twenty-something, and college + job searching on top of that, I can say confidently that I have every reason to believe there is nothing in this world that will ever be able to break me like my OCD says. Because the most important step a person can take is always the next one, and you can always save yourself or be saved by someone else as long as you’re still alive. Wake up every morning, summon your strength to face the day, and keep moving forward.
