It's not a "wasteland". It's more just very rural and remote. Think Wyoming or Alaska. Alaska has Anchorage (which isn't exactly a SMALL city), but is MOSTLY rural and spread out. It's also far from most non-Anchorage civilization, meaning it's out of the way for people to travel on business or pleasure, and far from government reach. There are even many planets and civilizations that have not even been charted, where there could be plants and civilizations like us on Earth that aren't part of it all. I know it's a Galaxy far, far away, but if the Milky Way was like the Star Wars Galaxy, Sol/Earth would probably be in either the Outer Rim or the far reaches of the Mid Rim. I mean, there could be a "Galactic Republic" in the Milky Way that neither knows of Earth nor us know of them for thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years.
Warhammer 40k, if I recall correctly, has a similar situation with many of the old Earth's colonies cut off from the rest for eons (granted, the reason is different, but the "lost/not part of the Imperium" worlds is comparable.)
You note when they were settled, but consider that there ARE also independent civilizations out there, and have even been moderate sized empires. The Hutts being just one.
And for people that like a "simple", rural life - not just criminals, but just simple folks that don't like oppressive government - places like the Outer Rim/Alaska/Wyoming/etc are attractive options.

Makes me think of how the Imperium in 40k is so unstable; it's too damned big for its own good. It's hard to knit together a few hundred worlds into a coalition, let along hundreds of thousands, if not millions, especially when communication and travel between them can range between days, weeks, months, or even years. You could jump to any random system, find the local populated world, and then immediately jump to a nearby star system to discover the populated system there is entirely different. One might be a factory world, dedicated to manufacturing goods for the local sector, while the second might be a colony world -- surrounded by populated systems -- that no one has visited in 500 years because it was left off the starcharts by accident 600 years ago when an intern sneezed while typing. Entire worlds lost or forgotten by the slip of a pen or the backspace button on a computer.

Hey EckhartsLadder, love the videos. This is what I have learned when talking about the Star Wars universe: The New Republic (NR) has a standing military (Army, Air Force ,Navy), but it cannot be everywhere at once. The NR has to rely on local system governments to police their own territories and maintain the peace. The Outer Rim is far enough away from the Core and resources that are more available to inner systems; in effect it is the wild west in these systems for people to experience run-ins with slavers, pirates, Imperial Warlords, invading species from Unknown Regions. So, yeah, Outer Rim life is harsh and unforgiving.

I personally think there are 3 main criteria for a planet to be developed and prosperous in the Star Wars Galaxy.
    1. Proximity to main hyperspace lanes- This is one of the most important criteria because having a location close to the hyperlanes gave you easy access to trade with the rest of the known Galaxy. You can have all the resources in the Galaxy but if your planet is far away from main hyperspace lanes it would be very risky and dangerous to export goods and services off your planet.
2 Natural resources or innovative technology- Having high demand resources like bacta, plasma or tibanna gas is very helpful to bring an influx of credits and wealth to your planet which can be used to fund better infrastructure and overall a higher standard of living for the citizens living in the planet. If a planet lacked natural resources, a planet can still be rich by developing high demand technology such as Star ships and droids that are competitive in the galactic market which is what Corellia and Kuat did for their economy.
    3. Hospitable environment of the planet- A planet can have a lot of natural resources and have easy access to main hyperspace lanes but if the planet has an inhospitable terrain, for example like Tatooine it would be very difficult to develop and encourage people to settle in the planet since the environment is undesirable for people to live in.

I have this theory that the Imperial Remnants and later the Fel Empire massive expansion post the Second Galactic Civil Wars in Star Wars Legends was due to mixture of resentment towards the Core from Outer Rim worlds for refusing to send serious military response to their territory during the initial Yuuzang Vong invasion and therefore suffering the longest occupation of the war, and that these worlds believed that they would gain greater promise within the Empire rather remain with the Galactic Alliance, as Bastion would invest heavily in any new world that could increase the Remnants more limited resources.

The problem is that in Star Wars you never really get a sense of how long it takes to from point A to point B, the impression that is given is that that many ships can go thousand of light years in a few hours! you can go from one sector of the galaxy to another in a day. It should not be a hassle to send police forces and fleets on patrol routs.
Another thing that has bugged me about the Star Wars Universe is the utter lack of mass communication, There is a Holonet but it's like no one really uses it.

Everything goes back to the nationalization that the Empire did. They made the Holonet the one-in-all system plus they made sure you paid extra to send a message home. Under the Empire and the early years of the New Republic, Holonet was expensive to use. The communication got better with 80 percent of the star systems setting up Holonet or having access to Holonet and other intergalactic communication towards the Core around 40 ABY+. Most backwater planets or systems still had issues. Also the books cover the hyperspace travel pretty well. When Luke Skywalker was sentence to Exile, it was covered that they took three weeks to travel from point A to Point B.

I love thee analysis of Star Wars like the economy and stuff like that which you know not many people pay attention to but it's really amazing when you get to world building. In the USA I can think of a similar event which has happened. A long time ago there used to be a highway called Route 66 and it was one of the main transportation paths for the new invention of the car. And all along it very very small towns popped up became very prosperous. That is until a new interstate Federal Highway System came along, and the city's that happened to be along this path grew up to be super prosperous why all the cities on the 66 path tended to slowly die out. I happen to live in New Mexico which has both I-40 and Route 66 very close to each other. And they both became very prosperous along that route because you know the more people coming through the more trade and the more Commerce happens. Meanwhile the few towns that were not close to I-40 but on 66 started to slowly fade away and lose the majority of their population. Nowadays it is a vacation road trip to go along Highway 66 so it is a little bit better now but many of the town's lost their glow and have a lot of problems and just overall poverty and a lot of crime. Kind of crazy. It's also really neat how this is put into Star Wars. again thanks for all of your awesome videos I really love the crap out of this stuff!

3:23 Kamino, Ukio, and Rishi’s location is way off. We know the Rishi Maze is located almost directly north and the Abrion Sector (Rishi, Ukio, and in canon, scarif) were galactic north-northeast and Kamino was between Abrion and the Rishi Maze.

Hey @eckhartsladder I've been following you for a few years and I just wanted to ask if you'd consider doing a reapers vs flood vs video. Like if the reapers invaded a section of space (maybe a good amount of star systems controlled by the flood) would they be succumb to the flood or could a grave mind be indoctrinated? If it's too much what do you think at least?

Based on the new canon lore, the Outer Rim wasn't the only place that the Republic forgot about. Even Coruscant itself, the most populated planet in the galaxy, literally fell into disrepair and subsequently a massive gang war that basically ruined the planet. It kinda seems like the New Republic was so obsessed with removing any Imperial influence in the galaxy, they purposefully neglected Coruscant and other core worlds, that had served the Empire. But then at the same time, the NR also forgets about the outer rim. Pretty much the whole galaxy was messed up under the New Republic. Honestly, maybe it was a good thing the NR fell. If you're gonna let the most prestigious core worlds fall into disrepair, then you don't even deserve to govern.

However one month after first contact with the covenant the UNSC INFINITY and her escort fleet of Autumn class cruisers appear at earth through a wormhole. The ships are fully operational and have manuals detailing how all ship systems, such as shielding and more advanced slipsace, operate and also how to build them for other ships. However it does not have the spartan 4s. How does this affect the human covenant war? Does humanity win or lose? #askeck

Hyperspace routes a kinda like the railroad system of 19th century America where one town could flourish if the road goes through the town but a town it passes would die off from lack of commerce.
