Honestly, I do have a boyfriend, and still I can't wait for quarantine to be over to go on a proper date with myself. I'll eat sushi, walk in the city center, relax/read on a bench, get a bubble tea, maybe buy a pencil for my eyebrows and try to find cute substitutes for things that are old and broken in my room. So, even if you have a boyfriend, it is still so important to have some good quality time with yourself.

I did some of those things, but not all of them at the same time, and not all of them alone. But I'm still gonna have this day, soon, because now a lot of things are reopening. And I still haven't bought the eyebrows pencil. In the meantime, I bought a teeth whitening toothpaste. I had a little glow up during quarantine actually. Nails, eyebrows, new clothes, organized closet, got a little bit of a tan, that toothpaste, pulsed light for hair removal in my legs. I've been feeling glowing up alot. And when this lockdown is properly over I'm gonna have my day, and I'm sure you're gonna have your day. Let's keep each other updated because I really need positive vibes in this period!

Some time shortly after I ended a 5 year relationship, I heard a stranger share this reminder: "The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself." It's been almost a year now and since then I've grown to genuinely love spending time alone and taking myself on dates. The beach, movies, concerts, plays, etc. Going with friends is fun, but venturing alone allows you to go at your own pace, be more introspective, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. Being a introvert and a LOT older than any of you, I can safely say, I've taken myself out many times and enjoyed myself thoroughly. When my husband died 10 years ago, I was young but not ready to date, again. Too heartbroken. Over time I would go to our local public gardens for a concert or two. Dinner, the movies, etc. If I ever do find love again, I will be lucky because I've already had the very best.

damn i'm that woman over 30 (will be 31 late this yr) and i haven't married and settled down and have kids yet... trust me, it isn't that bad. some people make what you just mentioned as their achievements in life, and i'm just living a different kind of life... i could go off the radar and spend my time in the jungle for a week or two (i live in the tropics btw), i could go on trips or humanitarian missions at any random time (after taking care of my finances, that is, and making sure my parents would be ok), i could just do what i love to do. And I love doing things without having to ask for permission from others all the time - just being me. Marriage and kids will happen to me if the universe wants it to happen, you know? I love kids, but why rush things if it hasn't happened? Don't worry, Ashley, you're 21, but you're more matured than most 21 y/os. When I went to college the first boy that pretty much paid attention to me became my first boyfriend - and it was a BAD idea because I was searching for love and validation from someone who didn't even want me that much. Some time shortly after I ended a 5 year relationship, I heard a stranger share this reminder: "The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself."
It's been almost a year now and since then I've grown to genuinely love spending time alone and taking myself on dates. The beach, movies, concerts, plays, etc. Going with friends is fun, but venturing alone allows you to go at your own pace, be more introspective, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. I highly recommend people do it more. Be good to yourself, you deserve it. 💖

Being a introvert and a LOT older than any of you, I can safely say, I've taken myself out many times and enjoyed myself thoroughly. When my husband died 10 years ago, I was young but not ready to date, again. Too heartbroken. Over time I would go to our local public gardens for a concert or two. Dinner, the movies, etc. If I ever do find love again, I will be lucky because I've already had the very best.

damn i'm that woman over 30 (will be 31 late this yr) and i haven't married and settled down and have kids yet... trust me, it isn't that bad. some people make what you just mentioned as their achievements in life, and i'm just living a different kind of life... i could go off the radar and spend my time in the jungle for a week or two (i live in the tropics btw), i could go on trips or humanitarian missions at any random time (after taking care of my finances, that is, and making sure my parents would be ok), i could just do what i love to do. And I love doing things without having to ask for permission from others all the time - just being me. Marriage and kids will happen to me if the universe wants it to happen, you know? I love kids, but why rush things if it hasn't happened? Don't worry, Ashley, you're 21, but you're more matured than most 21 y/os. You have so many more things to experience, and you better look forward to them :)

I totally agree about concerts being a spiritual experience... I didn't grow up going to church but something about a whole crowd of people feeling the same things at the same time always gets to me.
Its like concerts make the feels be amplified in a way
in anthropology there’s an actual word for that feeling! It’s called collective effervescence and it’s literally the feeling u get at church, or at a sports game, or a concert! Idk I just love that there’s a word for it

You spoke about being anonymous in a crowd and how you found so much beauty in it, it really changed my perspective on things like that. I used to think about how small I felt in large crowds and how if I felt so anonymous in a group a millions of people in a city, do I even matter at all to the small amount of people that do know me? I feel like especially teenagers find themselves realizing they're no one's special person. And that's a hard thing to realize, so they chase after a boy so that they can be their special person, and to prove that they are loveable. And I think that can be toxic for everyone involved

No societal pressure is worth wasting your time with someone who doesn't love you like you should (and I hope you do) love yourself. Us women are taught that we *need* to be in a relationship no matter how much of ourselves it costs us.
I can't tell you that "the right person" will come along and it'll all be perfect, but as long as you love yourself, there'll always be someone there to love you like you deserve; and once you know your worth, it'll be a lot harder for anyone to make you feel like you deserve any less.
It's not selfish to love yourself. It's not wrong to be single. It's not wrong to want to be single rather than with a person who feels like a shoe that doesn't fit.

Ashley is so right about loving yourself without needing another person. When I went to college the first boy that pretty much paid attention to me became my first boyfriend - and it was a BAD idea because I was searching for love and validation from someone who didn't even want me that much. I was miserable. When I dumped him I glowed up that summer, travelled with my aunt and fell in love with the talented person that I could be.
Now I have a boyfriend that I love but I also just love me. Don't get me wrong, we do make each other happy but I don't need him to fulfill me, I fulfill me. So take Ashley's advice and go be with yourself! Wait for someone right.
