I just watched the video and I could hear how accomplished and happy you were to have grown the Red Clawson wheat just as your forefathers once did. The pride you take and the determination you have to reach your goals is a lesson a lot of folks should learn. I am very happy for your achievement and I hope you reach your one bushel target!! 🧡

@@vincentperratore4395 Seeing someone else working hard in this heat and high humidity, taking pride in the job they're doing, may have that effect on some folks. I broke out into a sweat just watching you swing that scythe! I'm afraid that's more work that most people are willing to put forth in today's culture...looks like wheat will remain expensive and in high demand! I'm green with envy. We had a cradle sickle hung in our barn in my youth. I got it down a couple of times to cut weeds. I knew what it did, but I'd never seen it used. It didn't work too good cutting weeds. We were using a Yankee Clipper Massey Harris combine during those times to harvest our white winter wheat which is primarily used in pastries. We'd bale the straw. It was bright yellow shiny straw. Stay the course. Thanks for sharing old times. Eaglegards...

Nifty little tying technique for the bundles. As I watched you I was trying to envision anything that would make it easier ergonomically. But I couldn’t see anything obvious that would improve on the way you did it - especially after you got into a rhythm.
You must have been very pleased and satisfied to grow and harvest this Red Clawson wheat that was grown by your family generations ago.
As to planting locations, hillside planting will give it a ‘fog drain’, similar to planting grapes to reduce downy and powdery mildew. Preferably a south facing slope with rows parallel to the slope. Just a hunch from my grape growing days.

It was obvious on the second run that you had found your stride.. smooth, easier swings. It would have to be that way years ago to last for acres.
Like a golf swing- on the first you had your hooks and slices, but the second- right down the middle so to speak.
I had never seen this done by hand- in the 60’s, combines were already being used..

I have a scythe. I've never swung it.. lol. I harvested my tiny barley crop with a tobacco hook. Danged stuff didn't grow but a foot tall, so it was hard on my old back. The heads were less than stellar and I haven't threshed it yet. Hubby has yet to build me the thresher. I expect to get a few pounds of barley seed to plant a decent crop for next season. I've developed an enormous amount of respect for those hard working farmers of yesteryear who harvested , threshed and winnowed their entire field by hand.

Can't wait to find out the end yield of flour so you have an idea of what you need to make it through a year. Also need to know when to plant the summer wheat and when to plant the winter wheat so you can plan on two harvest's a year in case something happens to one of them

My father used to cut our grass with a scythe and a sickle. Even though he sharpened the blade every time he felt any resistance he could be done faster than he could get out and fuel up the lawnmower. We children would gather up the hay to make dens. Happy memories.

Justro that was awesome job. That cradle looked like some monster from the past at first lol. But when you got the hang of it it was like walking through the park. That was neat the way to tie up the stalks but I think we all got plenty if hat string around now. I can't wait to see you finish processing it and grind some. Will your new mill be able to make flour out if this wheat .oh and how do you store it because it probably starts to lose protein once you grind I think. Awesome to get Billy helping. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

Another great video, you are about my favorite TH-camr to watch. I was gifted a cradle like yours about 3 years ago, am planning on fixing it this fall, needs a couple of the fingers replaced and the whole cradle tightened up. I may try to get some of that seed and get it planted this fall. Where is the best place to get it. Keep up the good work.

Justin you are putting my mothers stories into visual form? Her dad was born in 1896, I know he grew some wheat for their use but don't know much about it. Also grew oats, think that was only for horse feed?? Think she called the little bundles stooks and several put together was a shock.

Thank u for the video and the lesson how to use the sticks to make nots for bundling the wheat. It will be nice to see the next step to the process. Do u let it dry? How long ? How do I know is dry? Then after what’s next. Do u hulled it? How do u hulled? Then do u grind it and how do grids it. After grinding what do u so do u make bread or what other things u can make wirh it it. And also how and where do store it. How long does it last in storage? How much does one plant in order to last a season? The process from beginning to end is very valuable because now we need to know how to do everything step so that we can be self sufficient just like u.

Continuing the video...... you are missing a piece of equipment, I have no idea what it was called but mom said it was shaped like a capital L. Two of them just alike and they were held together with a number of dowel rod type things, ?wire?? metal bracing?? Well anyway, as your row of cut wheat is laying there you skid this L shaped gathering contraption down through there like pushing a shopping cart and your wheat will start to roll up on it self. When you get the size that suits you, tilt the front up and back it up (here I don't remember if you tied it on the thing or dumped it off for a 2nd person to tie). Hope that helps.... mom passed on or I would ask her for you.
