    When I have leftover tomato pulp and seeds I put it in my dehydrator on the fruit roll mats. Once it is fully dried, I put it in my blender and vacuum seal it in pint jars. A little tomato powder, pizza seasoning, a dash of sugar and a bit of water make a thick pizza sauce. My grandkids love homemade pizza.

    In my culture we don’t eat tomato soup. But I found your channel looking for ways I could preserve vegetables from my garden. I love the passion you share for preparing good food for your family and the love and respect you shared about your mum. It makes me want to try this recipe that seems to have such rich memories for you and was prepared with such care.

    When I watch you in the kitchen I can only imagine how proud your mother was of you. I would have loved to have known her and been able to glean from her the knowledge of prepping for her family. I know she was very proud of you.

    That's an old potato ricer. They are good for a lot of things. Better hang onto that one. Watching you this past couple weeks has taken me back to my older days when I used to help my mom and grandma. I didn't realize how many things I had forgotten until watching you. TY so much for sharing.

    You had me sold on tomato soup & grilled cheese until you said the dogs were barking at a deer. I started thinking about tomato soup and fried backstrap or soup & deer sausage on a biscuit!
    I don’t have one of those tomato press gadgets but do understand about it not fitting the counter right. I have a meat grinder with a clamp similar to that but no dishwasher to open the door on so I can’t use your trick. I set it up on my wood dining table and put cardboard or layers of newspaper between the clamp and table. It doesn’t hurt my old beat up table any but wouldn’t try it on a really nice one.
    I bet your mom was happy to keep using her colander/food mill just because she knew it worked for her. I do agree when you find a new tool that makes a job easier it’s a great feeling, but sometimes ya just stick with what ya know cause ya know it, ya know?! 😄
    Thanks so much for sharing your soup with us, it looked really good and I will try your family recipe the next time I make soup. It will be a new recipe to me, but I know it works if y’all have made it for so long and also because that adorable little taste tester approved it! I hope she gets to build as many snowmen as her little heart desires this winter!! ⛄️

      Ha ha ! Well we got options Lea ! Yep no where for a meat grinder either. I have used the cardboard trick myself . It works good. Yes I agree, mama knew it and was more comfortable using hers. Yeah I know, Ha ha ! I hope it turns out good and y’all like it. And yes Charlotte very much approves. I bet y’all don’t get to build snowmen and snowwomen down in your part of the country..

    Justro this is so calming to see the talent that your mother passed onto you! Good homemade tomato soup is like sending yourself a wrapped gift in summer to open over winter. Healthy yummy and I'm all about Char's idea of playing in the snow after have some! You are sewing them seeds of memory your beautiful mother passed to you! I have just found a hand crank mill similar to yours, now just need fresh tomatoes to try this out. Thank you for your time and family sharing!!

    I have a Victorio strainer like the one you are using. That is so very true about our counter tops now. I have to take a drawer out and place a board between the counter top and the mill as the counter top curves at the edge and it slips off.

    I have a Weston food mill. We used it to do apple sauce and pear sauce! I had to cook the fruit first but it sure saved me so much time and energy! I am going to use it for tomatoes this year. I have a farm nearby that grows tomatoes and I get seconds. I always get seconds on fruit also. It saves so much money

    I watched this a couple of hours ago and ran to the garden for all the ripe tomatoes lol I don’t have enough to can, but we will have it for supper tonight. I skipped the first step and just put the tomatoes in a stockpot and squished them up with my hands. They’re simmering for another 15 minutes and then I can put them through my little mill, like the one you said your mom called a colander. I’m excited! I love using that thing, especially for apples when I make apple butter 👅 Thanks for sharing this recipe. It sounds tasty and I can’t wait to try it 😁

    I don't do well with tomaters, when i was about 12, i was helping my mama can tomatoes, and for some reason the smell of it cooking made faint. I just really like watching your video's, because there is something special about you, and when I hear Charrlote, I know what a good daddy you are to your girl's.     Justin, thank you for sharing your mother's recipe. We don't have room for soup. I usually condense my harvest down to paste and can in pints. I will use the paste to try your recipe. Have you thought about running the onion through your juicer after the tomatoes? It would save you a step.
    Found your site due to the postings you did with The Holler Homestead. Working my way through your backlog. I know nothing about how mills work.. Enjoying it ☺.

    First time viewer, and love your channel. Since it's tomato canning season, I was looking for anything using tomatoes. Found your site from a FB group "Old Time Canning Recipes" and decided to check it out. So glad I did. I'll try this tomato soup recipe soon. Question though, no need to process in a canner because why?? Though I'm not new to canning, I thought everything had to be finished in a processor. Also, did you make your mater squeezer or can one like that be purchased? I have a new fangled one, and I spend more time clearing out the shoot and tubes then squeezing the tomatoes. Looking forward to discovering more of your recipes.

      Soup is boiling and jars are sterilized.
      That is something that you can purchase. Westin and Johnny Apple Sauce are different brands of these. Hope it helps ! Glad you are here !

    I'd have to freeze this recipe to feel safe serving it. I would like to try it though. Sounds delicious.
    Tomatoes are one of the culprits that occasionally harbor botulism; so they made changes to processing them.
    You might check the family home food processing website.

      @@metcalfmills5679 I'm concerned you're playing Russian Roulette.
      I only shared because I've researched botulism and had a nurse share about a whole familys painful death. When properly processed, at temperatures higher than boiling water can reach, you can kill off minute qty of botulism if they happen to be in the produce.
      The organism lives in some soils. That's one reason they always say to use unblemished clean food for preservation. My data is from decades ago, which indicate it's most common out here in the Western soils. However, with changing weather, it might find it's way to the East. That would increase your chances of happening upon it. Now, if you eat the produce fresh with a few organisms, your body should defend itself fine. It's the canning process that creates a perfect nursury and turns food to poison (if spore is present).
      You cannot tell if a jar has botulism. It doesn't pop the seal. It grows in the vacuum of the jar where no oxygen exists. Yep, the dead organism is deadly to us. So, just heating the food won't solve the problem.
      Here's what happens. IF you have only a few spores of botulism, and it ends up in a vacuum sealed jar; then it thrives and multiplies because the jar didn't get hot enough in a water bath. You open it and there's no way to detect it. You reheat it, but the food is laced with spores now. If you're lucky, you realize the family needs a hospital and get help asap... And maybe some or all live through it. Mind you. It might be that only one jar you can in 25 years gets to be the lucky one. But that lucky one is quite unlucky for you .
      If you freeze the product, it won't grow botulism. If you pressure can, it won't grow botulism.
      I'd be happy to send you a copy of USDA Home Canning so you can modify your family recipes to ensure the safety of ALL the jars you work so hard to put up.
      You are right. You might have a jar that's botulism free. But that's only because your land, so far, hadn't harbored it.

      ​@@gogogardenerif you do a little more research you will find the acidity from tomatoes has a pH that negates the risk of botulism in most cases. Most veggies you need to pressure can but tomatoes can be pressure or water bathed.

      Yes, if you are concerned that pressure cooking heat won’t kill the organism, then a bit of citric acid or lemon juice oughta take away your fears, not to mention your own immune system…

    That soup would make a perfect red catfish stew. Just add it to your boiled catfish broth and deboned catfish with a little corn and potatoes. Mmmmmm mmmmmm.

    I am thinking about your comment about washing the poisons off your produce with plenty of water & I just wanted to mention the chemicals that are used in dish detergents, like Dawn, is heavily perfumed made from petroleum products. Can I share one that is commonly sold called JOY, it has a simple scent of lemon but not much. Your girls might get used to it & appreciate the change. Also I like not to have perfume in my kitchen areas so the food aromas dominant there. I hope you will try it & let me know if you find it a good addition to your kitchen after trying it for a couple of months. I recommend this your audience!

    I know I’m behind on videos. Playing catch-up we use one of those food mills for our homemade apple butter. Trick I use is that I change the handle to where it runs on a cordless drill. Saves a lot of cranking

      I started dehydrating the skin/peels & seeds when I do tomato items. Then when they are totally dry, I run them through a little electric coffee grinder and make them into powder. I store the powder in a jar with a silica packet. I can add water to the powder and make it into a paste or just add a spoonful or two to anything I want to boost the tomato flavor in. Yum

    Your tomatoes go through the mill better than mine do. I run them through twice and then it starts bogging down...had to take it apart once to get out the clog.

    I wish I had one of those! I boiled, cored and took out seeds and peeled the skins by hand! I thought what a waste of tomato and the juice for soup.

      Mama always did. Always have a successful seal on all the jars. I think cooling down too fast gives a possibility of a poor sealing

      Pressure is for cooking. If the jars are hot and the soup is boiling theres not much else to do. My family has been doing it for years this way. Thank you!

    I came to this channel at the suggestion of another channel. I am very familiar with these old time ways of putting up food. But they may not be safe anymore. Our environment has changed, the rain falling from the sky isnt the same anymore with all the cloud seeding / geoengineering going on. Even seeds of a lot of vegetables are genetically modified. I strongly urge you to visit the NCHFP. I think you are a wonderful person trying to ensure your family eats wholesome healthy food by growing and preserving your own. But I would absolutely never forgive myself if I at least didnt speak up and say something about your once safe methods of preserving food and you or one of your children got botulism. Please just reconsider the method in which you preserve. I noticed very few people spoke up , but many unknowingly will be trying your method. Please reconsider if not but for your childrens sake. I came from generations of family that put up food in the old ways. A lot of recipes can be adapted to safely preserve without changing ingredients. I have held on to my grandmother's recipes for jelly, soups , stews and made the necessary adjustments to preserve them without compromising the taste. Please be safe.

    I'm about a year to late dude, but you really shouldn't let your dogs run deer. It's inhumane. I had just subscribed to your channel about a week ago, and was watching back videos when I came across this one. I'm now unsubscribed. Not that you would care about it anymore than you care about deer or your dogs getting shot if they get caught running deer.

      Justin Oven Sterilized his Jars & he Hot Packed the Soup as our ancestors used to, hot into hot glass and wiping the jar rim clean ( do it with 5% vinegar) & yep, his method can work for home canning (not for sale) and his jars can remain shelf stable. Check the BALL Canning Blue Book recipes, AND look for the Federal home preservation canning food safety details for your safety concerns yall.
