- Peace TH-cam family,
Before we even start this.. I just want y’all to know this was a 40 min video at first. Hahahaha we had a good time filming this. I want to send a huge thank you to my boyz for being brave and jumping on with no questions. I truly apologize for jumping in & cutting you guys off when u were speaking. I’ve tried super hard to shorten this video as much as possible. I want my TH-cam videos to get directly to the point to give the people what they want and need to get started. 💰 just a FYi
In this video I chop it up with my shipmates asking them questions on their personal experience getting started as Merchant Seafarers without attending the apprenticeship program. This video is beneficial for a lot of people I come into contact with that’s interested but don’t have the time for the school.
Yes it’s possible!! You might even have to wait longer for a job but it will happen for you. So have patience my friends if you’re 100 percent sure this is the road you want to take.
Me personally I highly recommend the school from my own personal experience of walking into the hall and landing a job much quicker than a sailor coming off the streets (no solid training) . As a SA I landed my second ship as soon as I got into the hall while the next man was waiting 3 months to get the same position. He wasn’t the happiest but this can happen to you at any given time when the next person has seniority over you. The bills are coming in I don’t have time to wait up to 3 months , that won’t fly this way. Sorry bro 😩😂
Comment which route you will be taking and why! I’m very curious

You guys are entertaining, and good on you for helping people out. Sailed as an Engineering Officer, and did my best to help unlicensed earn their license. Sailed for 12 years and now that I've got a wife and mini-me, I just couldn't do it anymore. Myself I grad' California Maritime Academy, '05.
This is so awesome!!!! We appreciate all the feedback. One of the guys in the video Dad sails Eng Dep right now. Thank you for your service.
Congratulations on the lil one, it’s nothing like family. Definitely made the right choice.
Can I get on a ship as stewards essay without the safety and security? Maybe take it after I start making some money

Great people. Thanks for the video!
Awesome video, very informative!
Much Thanks brother !!
Young people please let them know about the older people. Some people think 🤔 they are too old. It’s people in their 80’s working as merchant mariners
I had classmates in their 60’s I seem them all ages out here
Thanks for saying that that was my ?cut off age
I did class at BlueWater they gave me everything I needed ability to perform watch and everything else I need. Then I joined the union hall so that wasn’t bad at all.
That’s smart 💡
How long it take for you to find a job
Thanks for making these videos. I'm really on the fence about going through this. Do yall feel like yall made the right choice ? Any regrets ?
What happened after you joined the union hall?

What makes you want to leave a ship? Do you think if you were an officer, your perspective would be different? Also he says he wanted to be in the engine room. Would that have made a difference in satisfaction?

lol ayeee I went to school with Edward 😭 tell him Ashleigh Edwards said hello!!
The school gets funding from grants each person enrolled at the school is more money to keep the training program and the upgrading program running, pays for utilities, pays the maintenance, the teachers, and so on. While it’s not required to do the apprenticeship program but does definitely give you the fast track to getting your B book and then to get your A book.
Do you know how to swim
@@roselynholloway7863 what does this have to do with anything?
Agreed brother, nicely said
Mmc book on its way back then going to the union hall in Norfolk also, bt I’m definitely doing the apprenticeship! I wanna b a cook so bad
Congratulations to you!!! This is great news how was your process?? 😩😂 Many cook jobs always available btw
Im still remember that day, probably i was on main engine sweating 😂😂
lmaooooooo
I needed this, SIU just denied me from the apprenticeship program
why?
Why??? If you don't mind sharing
Are you going to try msc
thanks for the valuable info quick question when you guys are talking about going to a hall for work does that mean any hall for mariners near where you live or do you have to be part of a union or there union to enter and apply for jobs in halls can you explain thanks much???
You are very welcome ! 😊 you are correct, we’re speaking of ANY SIU Union hall that’s close to you or if you wanted to travel to a different one. You will have to register at that hall first in order to get a gig. After you register, that is where you will be able to go in order to ship out on a vessel.
Great video! If you start to obtain sea time before you get your MMC by let’s say working on a cruise ship for 6 months and obtain 180+ sea hours, can you then join the union as a B Book?
Thank you for watching unfortunately I don’t have any knowledge when it comes to cruise ships… I have a very good friend that might can help this question out a lot. We are planning to do a video very soon so make sure you’re subscribed and tap that bell to get notified when it gets posted.
I got my mmc card first before I took a class in Virginia. But after the class you have to apply an endorsement label to stick to your mmc card the waiting time is about 2-3 months. So it’s the same thing which one you gonna take first either the mmc or class
You’re correct!!! And you have to travel to that hall so they can place it in your book.
Exactly
Did you ever find work or get on a boat? Where did you go?
Like this content. So, my mmc application is considered complete even without having done the basic safety training/stcw? Mmc card can be received without going to bst first?
yes! When you get it the school all of that gf g will be taken care of no worries
I don’t know if anyone will read this - I’m from AZ and a guy at the actual blue water school said to just get my credentials and work entry level on the Great Lakes before I even try to go for basic training.
He was real and recommended getting some experience on a ship before investing a bunch of money, I’m pretty sure I’m going to like it. But how would I even convince someone to hire me that’s a few hundred miles away. There’s absolutely no union halls out here in the desert lol.
You figure it out yet?
? I’m in Az too please let me know
Do you have your twic card
Fireeee
Thank you!
Thank you
Getting straight to the point

thank you
Seafarers school, even if you have a limited extension span, still give you something more than those within the video.
How
So based on your tats, I’m assuming they don’t have any restrictions for that? I’m heavily covered including my hands neck and head tattooed and I’m thinking about joining.
quality Marnie time!!!!!!
Got my passport, TWIC application submitted, gotta get my medical certificate the MMC here I come!
Almost there keep going
Thanks for the video, good information! Are you still in the industry because this was 2 years ago? I went to Piney Point for the STCW Training and have a job as a Steward on Norwegian Cruise Line but was told my position is "Fully Manned" on the cruise ship so I am applying for SIU as a Steward Assistant (SA) hopefully I get a job faster. Wish me luck 🍀
How different is it from just going vs going to the school 1st in regards to pay?
Pay no different just the wait time maybe at the hall…
Do I need to get my covid shot or just check to see if I have covid? How many shots do I have to take? I want to go now since 2014 but didn't know what all I needed to do. I wish I knew then because I would have gone and not have to take the covid test. By now I could have just been chilling if I went then.
You have to be fully vaccinated with both shots ! It’s not to late to start.
Loved this video, do you know if I start with a C book if I have 365 days sailing?? Can I skip like phase 1 in the program?
Appreciate YA! I’m not to sure about that brother. Please contact your closest union hall..them sea days can be a little tricky.
I work in the gulf but wanna come siu but will be starting at a c book is a lot of the contracts bad
This is my first time seeing someone that want to make the change from gulf to SIU…As far as the contracts honestly my bills are being paid and life is good!!! I can’t complain .
Hey so question I think the nearest unions for me are Florida or Virginia i live in sc so I would have to drive to the unions to get a job ?
Is the COVID vac required for this job, and how do you go through the union without the apprentice program if you don’t live close to the union hall?
Hey Barry, great questions! Unfortunately you do need to have both of your shots in order to attend the program and sail. This video pretty much told you exactly what you need to do if YOU DONT want to attend the school. As far as the union hall situation. You will need to plan ahead and travel to your nearest one dear. It’s a pain but really worth it.
It’s many sailors who live out the country or live hours away from a union hall. Don’t let that get in the way for you buddy. A car or plane ride will be needed. Plan accordingly ..esp with your medical and traveling back and forth to a hall.
Do you have to learn how to swim and were can i get training to learn how before i think about getting on any ship.
11:10 …. I just realized that he was holding a cup and not a oil filter 😂
😂😂😂😂
I plan on joining SIU (steward) any tips or advice? I know they said you have to do take an entrance exam I’m not good in math at all I’m worried bout not getting in.
That’s awesome!! Test is very easy..Brush up on your fractions and you will be just fine. I have other videos you can watch for your tips!

What about get hired with crowley tugs 30 on and 30 Off siu affiliated no siu hall and get paid as you train at piney point? Can this be done
This rotation will interfere with school! I love tugs btw
Guess all I need is that Passport then. I’ve got an MMC and TWIC. I’m about to get my AB and Tankerman soon so the passport is what I need. I currently work on Tugboats as Chief Engineer but I want to work on some Container Ships too so thanks for the suggestion. How is SIU? I have a buddy at MM&P but don’t know anyone at SIU. Thanks!
Do you know how to swim
this is a great way but they def taking someone that went to piny point first. its their program they will get 1st dibs
True but I've met a lot of C cards!!!
crazy i live & from norfolk starting the process how long do you guys stay out at sea? is there a minimum per year?
Congratulations to you! That’s a good hall. Usually it depends on your contract and what you grab out the hall….Relief or Rotary jobs. I stick with relief jobs (30 day, 60, or 90) Rotaries are 120 days (4 month contract) I’ve done 3 6 month jobs before in a row …😩 I’m still recovering mentally. That’s why I’m only dealing w short contracts. There’s a minimum of a certain days to keep your seniority & of course your health benefits. Let me double check before giving you a number.

Very welcome and yes
allright i took note of the steps to take etc . when u guys say go to the Hall, what does it mean?. City Hall near me?. or is it like a coast guard office or something?. any help?.
The closet Union Hall near you! One in every port city
Just wondering that vessel 🚢 looks like a liberty promise.
Is it worth going through the apprenticeship program and how much does it cost? Do you get reimbursed for expenses if you have to travel to the Union Hall trying to get a job? Can you get jobs online instead of going to the Union Hall? Do you have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to sail or go through the apprenticeship program?
Going to the school is worth it trust me! You will be paying union dues (Call your union hall to get that information) they do not reimbursed you for your travel to the union hall , but will when going to the school to take any of the classes you will need. Unfortunately as much as I would like to see us landing jobs online you will have to physically go into a union hall and register before getting a vessel.
Have to have both of your shots !
@@stuthesailor Deal-breaker. Big L.
As of Mar 10th you no longer have to get the clot shot
I’m from Houston. I wish i would have watched this video before i went to the office today. Any good advice on getting a cooking job and would you recommend it on the boat?
Absolutely!! So u will be going thro the program ?! If so my only advice would be to put your head down & complete the program..plus do what you need to do to upgrade to CC in order to get a cooking job. No worries the halls are ALWAYS in need of cooks !!! So you will be fine in getting a cook gig.

Yup so test are your basic math & reading! Very easy for anyone to pass. Gyms are always onboard some better than others unfortunately. The school has a great gym I personally enjoy it when I go to take classes. When you get to port your able to get off and do as you please . Just be back before your work shift starts.
