    Anybody that goes to Piney Point, choose either galley, deck or engine... BUT if you go deck or engine, dont stop at just being unlicensed, SIU has officer classes... You can become and officer (3rd mate or 3 assist. engineer) and work your way up to Captain or Chief Engineer.
    I went through SIU in 2003 and no one will tell you that you can become as officer...
    You can make upwards of 130k-180k per year as an officer on ATBs for 6 months of work only... FACTS

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! You have to take your classes over that expire like water survival, firefighting, etc., but you decide when you work once you’re part of the Union. Ideally, you need to ship at least 90 days of every year to keep your benefits and to be able to renew courses for free-otherwise you have to pay for the classes yourself-about $500 per course.

      James Berneil a friend of mine has a similar job to yours. He works on tugs and some times ships.
      There is a union hall in Houston on York St.
      Hope that helps. Thanks for watching my video!

    Excellent videos. Thank you so much! Question, I just filled out the application and waiting for a response. I'm also trying to work on the port unloading the ship. Are the two jobs some how related? Will the hours I work on the ship, go towards my hours as a casual?

      @Dani_TheUnicorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Josh Reyes hey! Thanks for watching my video.
      As far as free time, you may have a few hours to yourself during the first 3 months but you’re not allowed to leave the campus. At all. There are school jobs that you might be able to work for an extra $20 a week like working in the library. But it’s really like boot camp or prison lol.

    • @rudymanglona9329
      @rudymanglona9329 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for making this video! I have a few other questions if you don't mind answering! First is where would i take my physical and drug test? In the school, do you get your own individual room? And lastly, hopefully lol, as far as the "boot camp" part what are the physical requirements, if any?

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Josh Reyes hey. The union hall will contact comprehensive health and you will get a phone call to schedule your physical and drug test at designated locations near you.
      The room during the training process was like a big open room with a bunch of bunk beds. The physical requirements are to be able to bend, crawl, we had fitness class where you should be able to ride the stationery bike or jog for 15 minutes. Also you need to be able to swim across the pool (you can even wear your life vest)

    Hi I am from India, I am GC holder/lawful permanent resident of the Unites States. I have no problem in getting Twic card, Merchant Mariner credential, all my training updated on my merchant mariner credential. I can not afford to stay in US. So I want to apply online for positions online/from the comfort of my home in India, but when I contacted the Seafarers Union, I was told that I have to stay/reside close to the Union in NJ- to apply for jobs, for wiper and DDE. Do you know a way where I can apply online? If you do please share me the details. Thanks in advance.

    Dani_Love 12.....What is the average pay scale like. I don't need to know what YOU make exactly but IS there a kind of an average annual income that you can expect when you first start out and does that increase over time like any other job?....Or is it strictly based on what each shipping company pays per "ship out" And your job classification (cook, engineering or deck "classification")? And do you negotiate or bid on jobs and pay rates? It DOES seem to be an "interesting" lifestyle. Just curious.

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roger Buss non officer, $3k-$6k/ month roughly. Every ship/company has its own contract. Every contract has different pay. Officers make more, but they have degrees for this; $10k starting off roughly. The more you upgrade, the higher the pay. Most upgrades require a specific amount of sea time. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾

    Did you go to actual college though? Or was it just the 3 month school? Because I want to be a officer straight away. And I know that if you do a 4 year period college you graduate with a offices license.

      Day Dreamer if you want to be an officer, go to a maritime college. I have a degree in business, but this isn’t like the military. You can have a degree and still have to start from the bottom unless you went to a maritime college. In the military you can have a BS and become an officer, but not as a MM.

      It was free tuition, free room and board and free food.
      Most of the maritime academies and training facilities are free.
      I had to pay close to $500 for my uniform though.

      @@Dani_TheUnicorn Getting a bachelor's degree in marine transportation or marine engineering at a maritime academy is not free, unless you have a scholarship... Getting an education at a maritime academy is quite expensive. In fact, the chief mate on my last ship said he owed $100k in student loans for attending Cal Maritime. The cheapest academy though would be Texas A&M Galveston. Def the most affordable. Most expensive is Maine or Mass.
