I’ve noticed that the jobs boards barely show any jobs for the steward department. Mostly, it’s been like 8 or 9 pages for the deck department and 1 or 2 pages for the engine department.

I noticed that also while I’m here at the program for phase 1 they seem to get deck out way faster then they would engine and steward but with stewards department you have to take government vessels also there on union scale so it might be a little harder to find jobs for them

Yes their is a difference if your in galley you get paid as an actual member of siu. in deck and engine when you first sail out you get paid as a ua my check was 553 without ot with ot it was like 1500 in the engine department

And to answer your question no there wasn’t much sexism at piney point or on any of the ships I’ve been on it’s pretty equal for the most part but I do wanna throw in there is that there are a lot of age ranges there going from 18-50

Also being an engineer is not a hard process if you study you should be able to pass all of your upgrade courses and as far as being on a ship you just gotta be able to carry your weight not to much not to little

When you say coast guard physical .. is it the physical test or a body physical to see if you in good health?

It’s nothing much you go in and take your drug test after that they give you a brief physical like they make sure you can see they also make sure you can hear by giving you some headphones and asking if you hear the beep some doctors may do blood work

They do allow tattoos on both the boat and the program but during the program you cannot wear piercings

Siu really a good place to get your career started fr it’s a good environment they take care of everything fr they walk you through everything when you get to the program but with the pay thing siu the highest paying company outside of the 4 months you spend here when you here they pay you 40 dollars every 2 weeks

It’s really up to you it makes the process wayyy easier if you already have all your documents but you may have to pay for another physical which is like 130 and if you choose to wait and get all your documents you usually take all your medical after you take the reading and math test at your union hall
