@@Reginald-sc9tk As much as I like and respect the idea, that’ll defeat the purpose of the game. The purpose of Space Marine 2 is to play as a space marine. Not play as a guardsman. As much as that would be an interesting concept, it’ll dilute the experience for those wanting to play as space marines. Should that ever happen, we might as well be playing with the low level Tyranids.
If you want to play as a guardsman (or close to it), play Darktide. There’s even an Arma 3 40k community where you can play in guardsman units. Look up TIOW arma 3 for more information. (TH-cam ate this comment.😂)

The way the ideal 'Imperial Guardsman' game would work is exactly like the opening of Battlefield 1. Specifically the scene where you are a lone soldier that inevitably dies, the camera pans out, and is IMMEDIATELY shoved into the POV of yet another soldier.

    • @Eclipsed_Embers
      @Eclipsed_Embers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +312

that sounds kinda similar to the only real 2 changes I'd make to idea 1 suggested in the video.
1: 9 AI squadmates per guardsman player (make it a minimum sized squad)
2: when a player dies instead of taking 20 seconds to respawn they instantly take the place of the AI squad member with the highest HP, all AI squad members respawn when you reach a checkpoint. if you die with no AI guardsmen remaining you have to wait the full 60 seconds before coming back with a new squad of 9 AI teammates.

Lorewise being an Imperial guardsman is actually pretty damn great compared to the majority of Imperial life. Most guardsmen get paid pretty well generally and get well dieted food, especially compared to their less specialized and lower skilled counterparts the PDF troopers. Hell you'll likely get to be apart of your very own inner regimental gang. The Imperium, considering it's size and logistical challenges, does a pretty great job most of the time keeping their guard regiments in good order. Most guard regs don't even see the apocalyptic full scale war that's often depicted in mainline 40k lore, the reason being is because there are no space marines in those easier campaigns.
TLDR: Guard be chilling, fucking and fighting a good fair fight 90% of the time.

    • @randomisaac5959
      @randomisaac5959 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Lorewise Guardsmen regiments can get screwed over by the political shenanigans going up in higher command echelons, you'll most likely never return to your homeworld ever again but hey, the free travel. Heck, in one of the Gaunt's Ghosts books they had a entire supply problem because the lasrifle charge packs the Tanith's First lasrifles use were completely out of stock because they stocked a standard completely different from them resulting in them effectively going into a mission with only the charge packs they had when they came into the operation. Though you are right about most of it I'm mainly nitpicking over here

The best way I've seen to replicate the vulnerability and expendability of a guardsman was seen in the intro(?) to battlefield 1. You were a rando and you were expected to die and once your time came you were very quickly replaced by another rando, and another. Respawn was near instant to reflect the huge number of bodies with guns on the field. You never really "die", you aren't "a" guardsman, you are the guard itself as a faction.

    Okay, hear me out.
    Helldiver x Enlisted mechanics.
You can play guardsman, but as a Cadian Drop troop or some elite squad. Three players, each one a squad of 6(1 player, 6 controllable).
You can call in artillery, strikes and additional supplies (if available).
While controlling one, you are the squad lead and the other 5 are AI (Hopefully good AI). If you die, Enlisted mechanics take over and you take control of the next in command rank of your squad (one of the other 5). If all are dead, respawn a little far away as a reinforcement squad and make your way back to OBJ.
Your main missions are to flush out Xenos and Heretics in areas inaccessible to space marines and/or scout and fight together with AI space marines. Vents, tunnels, trenches, and deep swamps.
Thats 18 guardsmen in a lobby, equip em all with hellguns and we're in for a pretty light show.

We should have an Imperial Guard MMO:
    - You create your guardsman, select a background, and then you are placed in one of hundreds of possible deployment sites. From defending a Garrison on a remote planet, travelling in massive ships that can attack or be attacked by any number of enemies, active warzones, to patrolling Citadel Cities, you are needed everywhere!
    - We fight ALL enemies of humanity, none of this weakling talk like " ooOOOO bUt wErE nOt SpAcE MaRiNes! " Tell that to the Commissar and let us know how it goes Soldier!
    - Quest Lines for all locations, you are only deployed to a region for so long so these arcs would be shorter but would then turn to open to many objectives you and your fellow Guardsmen would need to complete in warzones / battlefields, we're here to wage war after all!
    - Active Battle Sites / War Zones in All Locations Except Forge Sites. Hundreds of players fighting alongside hundreds of fellow NPC guardsmen, based on the threat level of your deployment, reinforcements could have NPC armies like Space Marines arrive!! But enemy reinforcements are just as likely to turn the tide of battle when you least expect it!!
    - Summon NPC Reinforcements in a similar fashion to DoW 2 Redemption Last Stand Mode.
(Up to 20 Imperial Guard units of your choice, Vehicles Too! Unlocked via purchase with earned currency / Rank)
    - Call in air strikes, artillery, and more! (Earned through Rank, permanently unlocked)
    - Rank in short, is your player level that is adjusted based on your contributions, completed quests, and participation in major game turning points.
    - Daily Labors, from farming, to mining, to working in forges, repairing infrastructure: these labors can be done manually to earn crafting materials while contributing to the active war effort. Can also assign Labors for your character to complete when you aren't logged in! Characters cannot be attacked in Labor areas, but upon losing territory are transported to evacuation shuttles and reassigned. Guardsmen can be assigned to active battles, earn xp, increase rank, but will need to tend wounds and repair gear upon login.
    - Toggle between Isometric view, First Person, and Third Person.
    - Cosmetic unlocks, Permanent / Legacy (Crafted or Earned via Battle Accolades)
    - Gear and Vehicle unlocks, Permanent / Legacy (Crafted or Earned)
    - Skills and Perks, Permanent / Legacy (Earned via Battle Accolades, Quests, Crafting, and Daily Labors)
    - Eventually you can earn a high enough rank to get your own Devourer Dropship, and access to intergalactic deployment!
-Living World: Every NPC and every last player, whether Active Duty or in AFK Labor Mode, all contribute to the war effort, a truly interactive universe that you are an active part of!
    Pretty specific I know xD
Let me know what you guys think!

1:Because it would make it so much more of a vibe and it kinda takes away from the space marine fantasy if you just have so,e random guardsman there.
2:Balancing wise I think it makes more sense since ideally they would be weaker than the other classes but have that much different horde play style and so space marine players might not want guardsmen on harder difficulties.

Commissar: Have buffing aura similar to Bulwark.

Akimbo Pistol & Melee and is the only Guardsmen that can Parry and Gunstrike but they don't instant kill just Stun.

Carapace would give them 1 Armor but a Bonus 1 armor at the start of the mission and after killing Majoris+ enemy.
There ability would be "Bring It Down!!" giving them a damage bonus for a short time similar to executioner stance.
They can Parry and Block enemies like the commissar but only have access to the Combat Knife encouraging them to stay at a distance.

A guardsman class where you are the sargant/commisar and you have a group of 4 other AI Guardsman, when you target a specific enemy, it focus fires on that enemy and all AI in your squad shoot to bring it down would be awesome. having a special where you summon even more guardsman for 30 seconds with a heavy weapons crew that lay down heavy bolter fire in a general area would be awesome to clear hordes. Make it a supplimental class to the space marine group so you got 3 marines and 2 guardsman sargants would be awesome. Maybe even multiple guardsman classes...
    1. commisar-buffs guards and marines
    2. commando- does more damage and can "plant" a melta bomb by going invisible just like sniper, doesn't decloak while planting, only when attacking
    3. heavy specialist- can summon a group of heavy bolter gunners to mow down hordes

Let me add onto this, if that's ok! Also, feel free to yoink this, and make a follow up video! 😅
You should have your squad of guardsmen, you play the Sergeant or veteran usually, and if you die, your perspective and control SWITCHES to one of your 4 basic guys!
You then have a 20 second respawn/REINFORCE timer, and after that time, you get a replacement veteran to jump back into.
I see this working like this,
Instead of health per say, you get a total number of reinforcements. Every time a grunt or vet dies, you lose 1. You either get one back every 30-60 seconds, OR you have a larger pool and you're limited to that for the whole mission / per checkpoint. You can even give like 20~% of your reinforcements back at each significant checkpoints.
Next, while you may have to wait 20, 30, 40, or even 60 seconds to get your actual veteran back, you get a grunt replaced every 5-10 seconds. If the whole squad dies before you come back, that's like your "proper long cooldown death" / death death if you're the last alive!
I feel like this would make it feel like you're playing as a platoon of guardsmen, but controlling "YOUR" GUARDSMAN!

Fantastic video lad! The only thing I disagree with is the whole no parrying or executions thing.
For parrying, guardsmen could only parry and block gaunts, since a bayonet lets your gun act like a spear, the parry can be guardsmen holding it out and catching the gaunt mid-jump, firing once to ensure the kill, then shaking it off, the only way to block, not parry, warriors, is if you have a chainsword or powersword.
As for gun strikes, gaunts only, it would be your guardsmen swinging his lasgun like a club and bashing the gaunt away, before shooting it.
For executions, it would be locked to gaunts and warriors only, for gaunts, its simple as just your guardsmen stabbing the gaunt in the neck and then shooting once or simply stabbing the hell out of the gaunt.
For warriors, it would be a team effort, your guardsmen first stabs the warrior in the neck, then another comes from behind and stabs it the back of the head, then you both shoot to finish the job. Another execution is you dodging a strike and then shooting the offending limb off, before 2 other guardsmen come and blow the remaining limbs off, with a final shot to the head.
You would only be able to solo execute a warrior if you have a chainsword equipped or similar, it would be you stabbing the chest and letting the chainsword rev, before quickly blowing the head off with your pistol.
The team execution is inspire by the latest episode of tithes, where 2 guardsmen work together to stab an ork to death, and the chainsword executions being based off an animation of a commissar fighting heretics, where he does exactly that to one such heretic.
Speaking of heretics, you would only be to execution traitor guardsmen and tzaangors, for traitors, it would be either you stabbing the neck and shooting, or stabbing and then withdrawing to slash the heretic across the throat, for gors, it would be you stabbing the gor in the chest with a charging tackle, and then firing as many times as need, to ensure the kill.
For parrying, only one of them fatal, it would be you blocking the tzaangors sword and pushing it back, with a chainsword, you would parry the sword and then quickly getting into the beasts guard to slice it down from the chest, spilling its guts.
And that's all, once more, excellent vid lad, perhaps as a follow-up, you could include squad customization? Your guardsmen for the most part will carry the stand kit, but you can choose between lasgun variants, and some members can be chosen to carry a special weapon, such as a flamer or grenade launcher, and 2 of them can carry a heavy weapon, such a heavy bolter/flamer, a lascannon, or a autocannon. The weapon carriers will be quite vulnerable however, as they will move slower and they have to set up first if they wish to shoot their weapon and will lose the ability to move, and if you wish to move them, they have to get up and pack up their weapon. The only weapon that doesn't do this, is the heavy flamer, but are still slower due to carrying both a big weapon and its ammo.
But to compensate, it offers a powerful on demand defense, for swarm clearing or monster hunting.
Once again lad, excellent video and keep up the good work!

I like this idea. It gives a nice middle ground between no playable guardsmen and doing yet another Imperium focused game. Plus it’d help make things a bit more lore accurate, since in books and such a Guard can definitely 1v1 a space marine and win (not often mind you, but the odds are greater than 0%). We also have traitor guard so it also works in PVP, especially if we do the idea of having 4 bot guard following you around. Imagine if all you and your homies select Guard and just swarm the enemy. I’d pay good money to watch a Bulwark get torn into by 15 traitor guard like a bunch of piranhas

Kasrkin would be about upgrading your Bot Guardsmen and Self to deal more damage, take more hits and be better at standing your own, With Company just... Giving more guardsmen, and thats it, More Guardsmen, more often, all of the time, No special Abilities, just more guys and gals with las and flak.

idea 1 is probably my favorite but I'd make 2 changes to it.
1: would be to the number of guardsmen. 5 isn't a proper squad when it comes to guardsmen.
over time across many editions of 40K guardsmen have rather consistently had 10 as their minimum squad size. maximum squad size has varied a lot over the years, back when I started playing it was supposedly 50 (I admittedly didn't collect Imperial Guard at the time so I don't have the relevant codex to check the rules), for a while it was 30, and checking current rules it's now 20.
let's bring 9 bots per guardsman player instead, that way 1 guardsman player ends up with a minimum sized squad of guardsmen, meanwhile 3 guardsman players would end up with 30.
    2: respawn mechanics.
instead of having AI guardsmen respawn on a 20 second timer they instead usually only respawn at checkpoints (the same checkpoints that let Space Marines instantly come back), at which point your squad is replenished to maximum and all the AI squad members are fully healed (Space Marine bots already fully restore health at checkpoints so I don't see any balance issues here).
when a player dies they instantly respawn taking the place of the AI squad member with the highest health remaining.
if your team completely runs out of AI guardsmen it's the regular 60 second timer for respawn at which point you'll come back with 9 AI squad members (if a 2nd player dies during those 60 seconds they'll come back at the same time as the first player, taking the place of one of those AI squad members)

It would be so cool to run a guardsman squad as a sergeant you can order with your special ability or let them just follow you. Sergeant gets a power saber and a weak plasma pistol that also can explode. Each squad gets two special weapons users, that will take up the primary equipment slot. Customization should allow you to create the full squad to your liking. Squad members respawn at check points or with you when you die. You don’t go down, you have a mortal wound the entire time. You can’t carry guardian relics, one pip of armor, and squad perks could include something along the lines of either giving each squad member a lowly guardsmen to follow them around or a damage increase. Instead of switching to different guardsmen upon death, your squad just runs around doing what they can in the meantime, and when you respawn, you keep the same number of start members in your squad. Meaning if there are still 2 of your 10 man squad alive, you come back with 8 and group up with those 2.

Your bot-squad follows you and shoots at things, and you, as the officer carry a type of lasgun (or hellgun/long-las ect) and a special weapon. Such as a plasma gun (which explodes if it overheats), a rotary grenade launcher, or a flamer.
You're basicly a mix of a meat-shield and fire support, and you probably have lower target priority from the enemies because you're not the 2 tons of armor and rage charging at them.

Morale. It should be like the special ability that Spehss Mareens get only you have to have it activated all the time to be effective. Heck, maybe have it so you're peak as long as you haven't been attacked.

I played the game on hardmode when I played the campaign for the first time, as the "Intended" experience, which was a lot of fun. Though I'll admit, I had liked but also was surprised by just how quickly the Guardsmen died whenever you have them. I remember the first time I fought with guardsmen in the game, it was when we were fighting the Tyranids. That first fight went really well. We engaged, me and my brother's line held and while the little guys would rush through, a majority of them died with the more advanced types of 'nids. Yet when I turned around, not a single guardsman was left standing. I was disappointed, having thought I did well, but then I realized this was the genuine experience. I really enjoyed the game for that

Some friends and I talked about this at launch since we noticed the sheer variety of guardsmen so we had an idea that you'd effectively have another mode added onto the game, Campaign, Operations, Eternal War, Only in Death. Only in Death would be a purely guard centered gamemode where players would jump in as humans, guard vs cultists. Now originally we had an idea that it would be like eternal war but with humans so like instead of 6v6 it'd be 12v12 with new maps to compensate for the increased size.
However someone bought up the idea of it being like Titanfall 1 with maps/games operating like campaigns or operations with actual objectives. Retrieve item and plant to blow hole in wall, make breach and then clear/capture an area then move on to arm/interface with some kind of beacon then move on to another capture phase and then game ends with a cutscene. If the game stalls for a certain time then the game would flip to the other side commencing an attack but if you failed to reach the end by a time point it would end with whoever has the most objectives completed winning. From there we kinda spun on about a whole bunch of other stuff like customization, weapons, classes, abilities and even how the camera would work, gameplay mechanic and stuff.
This convo went on for like two or three hours with us hashing out this idea. Even tho it's SUPER unlikely or just straight up never gonna happen it would be incredibly cool and I feel would have even more people come to the game, you not only get Space Marines but Guard and it does sound counter-intuitive considering this is a game about Space Marines but like eh, it's fun

Proposal 2 would be the best option in my opinion seeing as it wouldn't make a lot of sense having a single guardsman on his own with 3 space marines. Personally I like the way it is, maybe another space marine would make it better, but so far I think 3 is working great. But I definitely argee that playing as a guardsman would be a lot of fun. My favourite part of the game is battling alongside guardsmen.

  • @coltpiecemaker
    @coltpiecemaker 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I like the idea of being a squad. You could even have different "classes," with a general purpose squad, a heavy weapons team (think heavy bolter/lascannon emplacement), stormtrooper squad, etc...
You could direct the squad to engage certain targets, take up defensive positions and, most importantly, bayonet charge!

  • @maxxinewillow3097
    @maxxinewillow3097 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Could be cool to have guardsmen as the first class in horde mode, once you earn enough kills/points you can call in as an ultra marine or wait till the last possible wave you can handle as the guard before dropping in, then as marines keep building points/kills to be able to call in as a dreadnought till you’re brought down (or survive to the end) then respawn back in as a marine but cant call in another dreadlad instead gift points to another to call in their dread-dude, or like gears of war horde save points for an extra self rez, base fortifications additional guardsmen squads (possible to play as them if everything else has fallen) or save up points for dreadbois (everyone will save points for dreadnought…. Lets be honest 😂)

  • @FoxHound621
    @FoxHound621 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

One other possibility is, a 10-15 player guardsman survival mode, where your objective is to hold off the Hord/Chaos Forces till the Ultra Marines come to the rescue. Respawn would be limited to 5~ times per round per player. Maybe even have mini missions in it that needs to be completed to improve your survival rates. But a straight up survival hord mode would be epic for both Ultra and Guardsmen. Maybe even the Ultra marines that come to save you are players completing a new operation type

I do really like using the ping system as a way to add a bit of RTS into a Guardsman class, kinda like Republic Commndo or GRAW. Also, a lot of comments mention this, but having the bot squad be like a "soft respawn" of sorts like the B1 intro would just tie the whole thing together so nicely. If you're too aggressive with your squad, you essentially lose potential respawns in additional to enemy aggro and firepower.
I also love playing the "little guy" in games like this. It's like being the UNSC marine facing the uneven odds of fighting the Covenant, but x100 in Warhammer 40K xD

I'd love to see some sort of reverse "invasion" trope like in sniper elite, where as in sniper elite you invade as an enemy sniper, here you (and friends you could queue up with) could invade and take the place of an allied guardsman. The space marines wouldn't see you and differently out of the normal guardsman, but you know who you are

One perk I would say you could give guardsmen that would boost their value, though it is a bit stock standard, is give them an ability like the Space Marines, and that is to fully refill a Space Marine's ammo. Basically lore wise the Guardsman is stripping the dead of their ammo, tie their grenades to a cooldown based on how many enemies they kill, and give them unlimited ammo for the lasgun, as there are ammo packs everywhere on guardsmen corpses.

My ultimate dream right now is for Saber/Focus to give the Space Marine II engine and assets to their other smaller dev teams, and each team makes a full spinoff game about different Imperial factions, complete with full Campaign and Co-operations: a Grey Knights game, a Sisters of Battle game, a Militarum game. ALL the fundamental foundation is set, they just have to get it made!

Maybe a pvp mode of 14 v 6 veteran guardsmen vs space marines, it could be called 'hunt' or something and the guardsmen would have to rely on swarming individual astartes, maybe bringing one down with a well placed melta shot or an unexpected 3-man bayonet charge from behind

This is exactly what I would want for the game, and i've bemoaned the lack of a guardsmen option every time ive played the campaign with friends. I recognise some might say "play darktide instead" but the two games are very different. The gameplay, the enemies, the thirdperson camera, the aesthetic, its all different in same ways that leads me to craving a guardsmen option for this game too.

    Proposal 4:
If you ever played brothers in arms hells Highway-a system like that. You lead a squad of 12, not a fire team of 4. This way you have about a Platoon sized element with 3 players. Your pings allow you to prioritize units you can also suppress enemies
instead of a perk system you have a “squad system” where you can create/customize your squads loadout as
Defense: heavy weapons, slow, ideal for holding an area down or providing suppressive fire.
Offensive: lightly equipped troops with heavier carapace armor intended for frontline assaults, more grenades, intended for assault purposes, will run out of ammo a lot faster than others
Standard: typical dudes, not great or bad at anything, decent at everything bad at nothing. General purpose.
