Same here. Only tried Vermintide once, because people compared it to Left 4 Dead, and I just couldn't get into it. Now that I'm more familiar with the series, I might expand into other games. I think the hooks are in.
Nice video, a couple of clarifications though: The warp is a fundamental aspect of the universe in 40k, like an infinite ocean that whirlpools around galaxies because life forms there. The different actions of life feeds the warp the energy it is made of, it itself isn't inherently evil just chaotic. It's only messed up because the galaxy in 40k is messed up and has been since the War in Heaven. The other thing was the deal the Emperor made: He grew impatient with humanities evolutionary progress and wanted to speed things up. The other perpetuals at first followed him but realized he was going to be just another Tyrant, so they all turned their backs on him one by one over centuries. He ventured to Molech because there was a stable entrance to the warp there. Once in the warp he sought out the gods of chaos and promised to lead humanity to worship chaos if they would give him power and the secrets to creating life. The gods agreed, but the Emperor never intended to keep his promise, that's why he was constantly rushing; he put humanity on a ticking clock and forced a situation to where only he could 'save' everyone. This is also why it took a while before chaos caught on and began to push back, at first they thought everything was going according to plan. This is also why the Webway was so integral to his plan; he needed to move as much of our species in there, where chaos couldn't corrupt us as we evolved into a psychic race. Irony being that in the 'current' time, humanity feeds its psykers to the Emperor to keep him alive, literally sacrificing its future for the present
Is the emperor smart? Like hes decribed as someone really strong and all but from what im hearing, hes kind of lacking foresight for someone whos lived since forever. Thats of course assuming that hes really foghting for the greater good. Maybe hes really smart and the state of the world right now is what he really wanted all along.
@@tonyhotte2936he can literally see possible futures which explains a lot of his actions. He is ruthless but a tyrant is arguably necessary for where humanity is at in 40k. Democracy of untold trillions of humans is not feasible or desirable. If the webway was completed things would’ve been very different.
@@tonyhotte2936 I think that is one bit that I really like. The Emperor is incredibly powerful and he is incredibly smart but he is also still human and subject to the human condition.

You've done a pretty great job condensing the major parts of the lore into a short and easily-digestible video. One small correction around 10:36, though: The Emperor created the space marine *legions.* Chapters only became a thing after the Heresy, when Robespierre Guillotine decided to split up the legions.
in the books the is this mystic figure known as "the Sunginor" which can appear and aid blood angels, us nerds speculated that Sanguinius accepted his fate and "died" and cant return in a body, but parts of his soul is in this "warp ghost" thats been shaped into its current existence by the 10 thousands years of billions praying to sunguinius as an angelic saint
I pray to actual god that that never happens. That would be nothing but a cash grab as the Blood Angels' entire aesthetic and current lore are centered around their grief for their dead father. Warhammer is supposed to be dark, not a fucking marvel movie where every important character just magically returns so they can sell more action figures. You can play the specific Horus Heresy game if you want to have Sanguinius on the tabletop.
I have seen the trailers, listen to other videos but after watching the secret level episode on Amazon Prime and hearing Henry cavill is making a series on prime this the perfect time to get into Warhammer universe.
Great video, It was very well done, pacing and explanation. Three important things however. 1) The Primearchs commanded the Space Marines as massive armies called Legions. After the rebellion ended, a surviving loyalist Primearch named Guillieman made a set of changes that split up the massive armies of the Imperium into smaller chunks. One set of rules, the Codex Astartes split the surviving loyalist legions into the chapters we see today, for example in Space Marine 2. 2) This is a bit of a spoiler for the end of the Horus Heresy book series, but the fate of Horus was changed to Horus WAS killed, however his soul ended up intact as Horus realised how wrong he was, and the Emperor spared his soul, meaning that Horus is not truely dead. 3) After the Heresy, the surviving Primearchs slowly died off or vanished, leaving the Imperium, once a haven of science of learning, to decay into a stagant cult that worshiped the Emperor, the one thing he could ABSOLUTLEY not tolerate while he was still alive. However, in an unexpected twist of fate that even the chaos gods did not anticipate, Guilliman was resurrected to lead the Imperium once again. (Poor guy)
Really never got into Warhammer until now. It’s fresh compared to the other major IPs out there, I pray we get a live action series/movies in the next few years that builds an expanded universe. This stuff could really play well on screen I think.
Good story telling is sidelined for identity politics . If they can prioritise the story , it will be insane. Warhammer already is inclusive and has all different kinds of flavours of strange
I’ve been into 40k for 25 years now… It is really nice to see comments from people discovering it and how deep and vast it is, especially compared to scifi franchises from the mainstream. The hard part is always explaining it to someone new without overloading them with information and this video does a great job of setting the scene & simplifying some stuff while providing many jumping off points for people to dig deeper into the details. (Good job on the pacing too).
I made the mistake of trying to explain it to a girl after our second date. When I got to the part about fanatical human supremacists engaging in Galactic-wide xenophobic mass murder, planetary genocide and forced-conscription to hold off the forces of a supposedly more evil regime that worships satanic-like gods of pleasure, pain, deceit and decay, she politely told me to stop talking. To her credit, she did ask me a question later in the evening- “so who are the good guys?”… I was like “that concept doesn’t existing in this universe” 😂

I know NOTHING about Warhammer 40k. I used to play Warhammer along with DnD. Saw Henry Cavill talk about it in an interview. He was so passionate and the fans are so passionate. I think I am starting a huge rabbit hole but I am intrigued.
I’d start by reading a book on the Horus Heresy, there are a few of them - or at the very least watch a few videos on the topic. Its the beginning of the civil war in the human empire and explains why there has been non-stop war for 10,000 years
Something of note, the Chaos Gods manipulated The Emperors wife to help scatter the Primacrhs, they told her he was just trying to conquer the Galaxy for power and using her sons to do so and never cared for them. She helped create them and is functionally their mother, her name is Erda and she was also a Perpetual

I got into Warhammer because I listened the Dante on audible and now I've spent a couple of hundred pounds on the books. Dante is still the best book. Listened to it about 10 times now
Great vid, but a quick note - originally the Space Marines were organised into Legions, not Chapters. Legions were over 100,000 strong in some cases. After the Horus Heresy, the Ultramarine Primarch Roboute Guilliman decreed that the legions be broken up into much smaller Chapters, only 1,000 strong, so that one man could never wield the power of an entire legion again. Of course, in 40k there are always exceptions. Looking at you, Dark Angels/Black Templars…
Nice video! Warhammer got my attention since vermintide 2, but I got a potato pc so I never played it or any of the games but I've seen shorts and seems amazing . What is the connection or lore of the vermintide age???
I think you should have added other basic info like the other main species, a sentence discribing the gods specialization, the way all of humanity is essentially a big war machine with everything being for that, how humamity lives(the different worlds specialized in different things and suffering)
The warp is a parrellel dimension that every sentient being has a ''shadow'' their soul in, their emotions flow into it giving it energy hence any sentient creature can access the warp in theory (there are a few sentient beings that have no soul or presence in the warp that is another story) some species have a greater or lesser effect on the warp and thus a greater or lesser ability to access and use it's energy , the chaos gods are the manifestation of emotion within the warp powered by the aformentioned emotions and thus try to maniplulate the real universe to increase their supply of the emotion that creates them , the warp went crazy 10K years ago as the hedonistic excess of the Alderi created enough emotion for a new entity to emerge in the warp as there was enough of that emotion now in it , the birth of Slaneesh who also devoured the souls of 99% of the Alderi at that point causing the massive surge in energy that created the galaxy wide warp storms
Literally started reading the Horus heresy kind of spoiled it for myself watching this but now I’m invested in getting the book complete to see what’s what lol
Very cool break down! There is no WAY I have enough time to explore all that I my own. So, thx for the cliff notes - def gonna check out the rest of your stuff! 🤘🖤💀🖤🤘
Thank you!! My husband recently got me into warhammer and I love it! Wish I had given it a chance earlier but I always shied away from the amount of lore despite loving dark scifi and fantasy. Recently reading some Krieg novels.
I have a question: you mentioned that the Emperor of Mankind is perpetual and can never die, so why do they not let him die and be reborn, rather than sacrificing 1,000 people a day just to keep him alive as a husk? Would it not be more beneficial for him to die and be reborn with a new physical body?
I was introduced to this incredible world for the first time when I got the game Inquisitor back when it got released on 2017. I was very much into the Arpg (diablo like) and Inquisitor was the latest release in the genre at that time. I couldn't follow the lore but enjoyed nonetheless, the futuristic gothic ambient appealed to me and its what set it apart from the other more traditional medieval-ish setting. After beating the story mode, I got a Warhammer 40k bundle which has been accumulating dust in my library up till recently not knowing from where to start. Back in my college days I used to join the star craft Lan party so beside Diablo y got into RTS which led me to invest heavily in AOE and War Craft and after that into Moba for my online craving. Last week I installed Space Marine 1 to see if I should get the recent sequel and as the game progressing, I started to realize lot of similarities (but on steroid) which led to investigate further and that how end up here, gratefully for the information that I was looking for. I wish I have discovered this gem way sooner, I am almost at my mid-40s and my obligations to my family limit my time to invest the time that I want in this world.
the butlerian jihad in dune was not a war against AI, it was against people using AI to enslave other people, it's alright tho most people get this wrong
I know this is probably at the most basic level of the lore but it seems much simpler than WoW lores. Interesting stuff. Thanks Space Marine 2 now I have more stuff to nerd on
Thank you. I knew getting into 40k lore was gunna be some wild shit, but I had no idea it was so deep. And to think, this is just a quick rundown. It serves as a PERFECT introduction to the lore and certain major events. I feel less afraid to dive down this rabbit hole. Thank you. I appreciate you. For the fuckin, uh, emperor or whatever! 🫡
I'm very new here, but if the Emperor has already been reborn before, isn't keeping him alive as he is worse since there's a chance he could simply reborn?
I know nothing about Warhammer, except it’s a huge thing among fiction nerd enthusiasts. I don’t even know if it started as a book or not. I only saw a recent game trailer. I decided to see what the hype is about and it sounds completely insane honestly. It seems to me only a sociopath can enjoy this type of lore. There’s only horrors, crazy idolatry and subservience mixed with hopelessness, all in a futuristic mystical space-machine gore.
New to this lore, but it seems that if you just let him actually die. He would have been reborn instead of being a husk of rotten flesh sitting on a golden throne. Its crazy how many people have to die to feed the emperor
i started to take attention on Space Marine because Space Marine 2 was so damn beautiful and also i was curious why Henry Cavill became a zealot for this game
I have a nooby question. If the emperor was Alexander the great, has died multiple times just to come back to life time and time again…. Shouldn’t the Imperium let him die on the golden throne and wait for him to be reborn once more ?
They don't know about that is what I heard, so the Emperor is stuck in Purgatory essentially of his follower's own folly. I guess it's because they would have to search for him whenever he is reincarnated like in Avatar TLA
Good question. I always thought he was technically dead anyways, but they kept his mind alive so he can hold off the chaos gods in the warp until the war ends. I think he is a skeleton by the time we get to 40,000 years in the future from what I understand.
That's a good effort lol i thinknits something that really is learned over years! There is so much depth to the universe, and one if the reasons it's so popular, there really is something for everyone within it. Good job 👏
Let me know what you think of the basic lore video! Also, if I ever get anything wrong in a video please let me know! Always willing to learn!

“Cyborg Tolkien in Space.” You're welcome.
Super new to 40k, first video for me!! Where do I start?
I think you should have added other basic info like the other main species, a sentence discribing the gods specialization, the way all of humanity is essentially a big war machine with everything being for that, how humamity lives(the different worlds specialized in different things and suffering)
the video can't possibly annoy the hell out of you within the first 5 seconds
@0:04 : "kimplex", hold my beer
*Screams internally*
What music is in this video?
Loving the videos my good man. They're scratching that itch I needed. Keep them coming! ❤
Each video I’m learning more! Loving the style of it.
A coworker and life long friend is super into warhammer and he has piqued my interest. This is gonna be a hell of a journey
I'm here because a youtuber did some skit with Warhammer lore that seems funny :D Also to prepare myself for rogue trade the crpg!

The stuff you presented in this video is really cool. As a full-time Warhammer fan, this is truly amazing even if it's coverage briefly.
I don't play War Hammer Josh, but I'm a huge sucker for great lore. I'll be watching all these videos! Well done! NV4LIFE!
Great video Josh! I’m so excited to buy and paint my first army next month.
Is the original Warhammer part of the same lore?
Supposedly not, but they do share the same chaos gods and there are a lot of similarities.
I mean that would make sense
I’m new to the Warhammer lore due to space marines 2 lol, I’ve been searching for a video that explains well and this is the best by far!!
the butlerian jihad in dune was not a war against AI, it was against people using AI to enslave other people, it's alright tho most people get this wrong
I' want to know the lore of warhammer but like where do I even start the so much is there any content that's like in order or something like that??
12:47 juiced to the gills 😂🦾🦾🦾
This greatly hits my nerve. Pacing content illustration and music. Well done my friend.
Just now trying to understand WH40K in 2024. This was a super helpful and interesting crash course. Thanks!
Thanks this is a new world for me to explore loving it already
I know this is probably at the most basic level of the lore but it seems much simpler than WoW lores. Interesting stuff. Thanks Space Marine 2 now I have more stuff to nerd on
Warhammer 40k have over 100 novels by the way.
Yeah, trust me on this one. It makes WoW lore look like a story for 7 year olds.
great vid josh, loving the content so far, can't wait for the next one
Josh is really going to have me hooked on Warhammer soon. I just know it. I'm loving the vids and keep them coming!
A couple of things. The warp went crazy with the birth of Slaanesh also the Thunder warriors were the first creation.
Kept the juicy part at the last sacrifice like Mayans to please the overlord Holy Hell! 😮
This is a great video! I honestly feel like a got a decent grasp on what Warhammer is
Thank you for that fast track history 101. Kinda made sense of the deep and wide lore of this universe!
What happened to Primarchs II and XI?
Well made will explained. I'm me to the lore and this is the first video I've found that didn't leave me confused.
Best lore overview I've seen on TH-cam
New to this lore, but it seems that if you just let him actually die. He would have been reborn instead of being a husk of rotten flesh sitting on a golden throne.
Its crazy how many people have to die to feed the emperor
Saying forty-k as forty thousand is like holding the wrong three fingers up when ordering three glasses.
the warp kinda reminds me of the the warrens from malazan book of the fallen
Are there any plans for movies for war hammer?
This is so good that i understood what is horus herasy is
i started to take attention on Space Marine because Space Marine 2 was so damn beautiful and also i was curious why Henry Cavill became a zealot for this game
"Then some bad stuff happened..." ...and has continued ever since.
I like how the imperium it’s the good guys they’re just ”the least bad”
I see, thanks for the answers ! It sure will be interesting if they do an epic rebirth arc in the future of the series
So basically Dungeons & Dune but in the future
Edit: this was right before you mentioned Dune. I love those books
That's a good effort lol i thinknits something that really is learned over years! There is so much depth to the universe, and one if the reasons it's so popular, there really is something for everyone within it. Good job 👏
