Gilbert becomes angry with Anne about Roy. Marilla asks him for a favour. Phil and Jonah make a decision. Anne finds out about her mother. Didn't like this plot twist myself.
Christopher Blake (Gilbert in this miniseries) died at age 55 of cancer. The beloved Jonathan Crombie died last month at age 48 from a brain hemorrhage. What a tragic coincidence that these two actors who portrayed Gilbert Blythe passed away at relatively young ages. So sad.
I wish Kevin Sullivan would have portrayed the scenes from Redland College with Gilbert and the Irrepressible Philippa Gordon and that Royal Gardner guy talked about here.
+elissajeanette But, Megan Follows looks nothing like Anne, as described in the books. No WAY is she tall & gangly, which was one of Anne's primary features
I remember this BBC version as a child. Christopher Blake was a lovely Gilbert. He later starred in a sitcom about a mixed marriage called 'Mixed Blessings', circa 1980 - it was actually shocking then that a white guy should marry a black girl, hard to believe now! What a likable actor he was, that he died young of cancer was a terrible tragedy.
I disagree with You all! it's not a masterpiece but it's not as bad as you judge. I love canadian version Anne's with Megan. But this version isFirst of all similiar to the plot. and Chronicles of narnia made for bbc is superb! Regards to all Anne's fans : )
Hm. This is clearly not Anne of Avonlea. Phil Gordon only appears in Anne of the Island. The actress playing Anne (beyond my opinion on her acting) sure does not look the age that Anne is meant to be in her Redmond days. And yes, they sure don't sound Canadian. It's weird.
It's not a patch on the Sullivan version, which has been one of the blessings of my life since 1988. However, I do kinda wish there'd been a British adaptation, with Bonita Melody Lysette Langford as Anne; and Emma Gwynedd Mary Chambers (born the same year as Bonnie), as Ruby Gillis.
As a British Home Child, Anne certainly lucked out. Typically most Home Children were used as free labour & not properly housed, fed, nor educated & kept ostracised from local children. But like Canada's MP.JASON KENNY says "the public has limited interest in official apologies for every tragic event in our past". And I suppose we should just watch the movie without a care!
I love the BBC version so much more than the Sullivan versions. The Beeb version was cheap Sunday evening viewing and none the worse for that. Although Kim Braden was five or six years too old for the part she was so much better than any of the others I've seen, including Megan Follows, just like the Anne in the books.
Where can I find a copy of this complete series? My girlfriend has been looking for it for years. I've tried all the torrents. But, all I can find is the substandard Megan Follows series. Apparently the BBC no longer have a copy, since it was destroyed in a fire years ago
sooo what's the deal with this? britain was into anne of green gables and then made a version of the book? i think this is earlier than the canadian film.
@jussym09 Yes he is! BBC might be more true to the second and third books, but their casting was REALLY horrible for this film. *shudders in terror - angry Gilbert = nightmares* LOL
Diamond&Coal Books And a fat Marilla??😳 Marilla was lean and angular and spare. It was just as much part of her character as Anne’s hair was of Anne’s.
Lolol. These accents are soo shady. If this had turned up on tv, I would have never guessed it was Anne of Avonlea or anything to do with the story. You'd think they were from the south or something . . .
Wow, I'm reading your comment 13 years later. I'm familiar with four adaptations, 1934, this, 1985, and one from the 2000's which I actually did not watch.
I give the actor who plays Gilbert an A for effort, but he keeps losing the "American" accent...I have never Axed someone a question in my life, Maybe in parts of NY they do, but I don't think that happens a lot in the States..
Marilla is ridiculous. she should be thinny and strong looking. but Gillbert is looking nice here.. in the newest version from 2000 I think, he looks bad.. not as it is in the book..

very strange indeed
I started laughing when Marilla came in "would you like some cocoa?" that is Marilla right?
I wish Kevin Sullivan would have portrayed the scenes from Redland College with Gilbert and the Irrepressible Philippa Gordon and that Royal Gardner guy talked about here.
WAIT ... wait a second I NEVER KNEW the BBC made an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables ??!!!! It's horrible
MsLiooo It really is! I'm so glad we have the Megan Follows/Jonathan Crombie version. This one is entirely unpalatable.
+elissajeanette
But, Megan Follows looks nothing like Anne, as described in the books. No WAY is she tall & gangly, which was one of Anne's primary features
MsLiooo well as a child...I loved it!!
I love this Anne of Avonlea version. I also love the 1980 version with Megan Follows.
I love this version. It's closer to the books. So good.
"I make it a rule never to answer any proposal of marriage couched in the subjunctive." 🤣 You tell him Phil!!!

I loved watching this, and remember it well. Kim Braden is adorable!

loved this series , my fav
The canadian version is waaaaaay better... Megan Follows is the bomb as Anne!
yes it was
This was shot like a play rather than a film.
Great show
I noticed that the actress who plays Phil/Phillipa in this series also plays Jane in the BBC '70s Pride and Prejudice.
I love both Kim Brayden and Megan Follows as Anne. I prefer the 1980s and 1970s versions over the newer versions.

Wow. Gilbert has anger problems here and Marilla is very.. manly.
@InsubordinationFreak do you mean the one with Colin Firth???
As a British Home Child, Anne certainly lucked out. Typically most Home Children were used as free labour & not properly housed, fed, nor educated & kept ostracised from local children. @KadyAz17 Jonathan Crombie is the perfect gilbert!! love him =)
I love Anne Shirley & Kim Braden
I love the BBC version so much more than the Sullivan versions. The Beeb version was cheap Sunday evening viewing and none the worse for that. Phil is hilarious :'D
Kim is wonderful as Anne. Her father was the famous Bernard Braden!
I agree...100%!!!
Oh my goodness this version stuck to the books!
Maybe I'm a bit nitpicky but this Anne (and Gil but mainly Anne) looks at tad bit too old? It's hard to buy that she's a teenager/young adult.
Where can I find a copy of this complete series? My girlfriend has been looking for it for years. I've tried all the torrents. But, all I can find is the substandard Megan Follows series. Apparently the BBC no longer have a copy, since it was destroyed in a fire years ago
+Simon Perkins
You can buy Anne of Avonlea (Kim Braden) on Amazon UK.
Yes, Anne of Green Gables with the same actors was sadly lost due to a fire but this BBC series- Anne of Avonlea, is available on Amazon and Ebay etc.
What am I even watching?!
*covers eyes*
So funny, Marilla looks like Eulalie Bugle in Road to Avonlea!!!
Because she is. 🥰
sooo what's the deal with this? britain was into anne of green gables and then made a version of the book? i think this is earlier than the canadian film.
Kim Braden IS THE BEST Anne. 👌
think you are right
@jussym09 Yes he is!
This version is horrible! No offense. The Marilla in this movie is the same actress as one of the big gossips in Road to Avonlea, i think
Lolol. These accents are soo shady. If this had turned up on tv, I would have never guessed it was Anne of Avonlea or anything to do with the story. You'd think they were from the south or something . . .
@psyche0626 ummm little britain? xDD
what is this thomas' plotline??!?!?!? it's RIDICULOUS!!!!
These actors are to old to play these parts
murella looks like a guy-
i like the other version much better with megan follows.
Wow, I'm reading your comment 13 years later. I'm familiar with four adaptations, 1934, this, 1985, and one from the 2000's which I actually did not watch.
This sucks. Anne is horible and Gilbert . Even the Marilla sucks i hate when they change the plot .
hahahahahahah this is hilarious. love it hahaha... but come on. lm would roll over in the grave
What's with the dodgy accents. Everyone speaks like anyone except a Canadian
I give the actor who plays Gilbert an A for effort, but he keeps losing the "American" accent...I have never Axed someone a question in my life, Maybe in parts of NY they do, but I don't think that happens a lot in the States..
Who’s the man playing Merella?
Marilla is ridiculous. she should be thinny and strong looking. but Gillbert is looking nice here.. in the newest version from 2000 I think, he looks bad.. not as it is in the book..
They old
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE ACTING!!!
