This film projects a benevolent sense of life--and Americana-the likes of which will not return to motion pictures for a long, long time. There are also happy emphases on the importance of personal integrity and the value of friendship.
I think Anne Shirley was the most gifted young actress of the 1930s. Her inspired pairing with the most accomplished screen actress of the 1930s-Barbara Stanwyck-is ideal in STELLA DALLAS (1937). Moreover, had Miss Shirley been older at the time actresses were being tested for the role of “Scarlett O’Hara” in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939), I think she would have been a superior choice to Vivien Leigh.
Fans of author L.M. Montgomery who appreciate Anne Shirley’s namesake-leading-role performance in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1934) will recognize and welcome the resurrection of the heroine’s delightful personality here.
Screenplay adapted from a Bret Harte story by Dorothy Yost, who contributed to a number of scripts for Astaire/Rogers films.

This is one of Anne Shirley's finest movies and she played the part beautifully. She was a great actress and delivered her best. I rate this movie a golden 10 and recommend it highly.
