MISS ANNE SHIRLEY: THE WAGES OF VIRTUE

  • [PLEASE READ] “I’m supposed to be grateful for being allowed to associate with such lovely girls!” snarls indignant teen actress Anne Shirley in character as “Natalie Freeman,” in GIRLS’ SCHOOL (1938). An eloquent story of virtue challenged and championed. GIRLS’ SCHOOL premiered on September 30, 1938.
Although threatening to tilt in a “Shirley-Jackson” direction à la the nightmare scenario of WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE (1962), this film ultimately projects a benevolent sense of life--and Americana-the likes of which will not return to motion pictures for a long, long time. There are also happy emphases on the importance of personal integrity and the value of friendship.
I think Anne Shirley was the most gifted young actress of the 1930s. Her inspired pairing with the most accomplished screen actress of the 1930s-Barbara Stanwyck-is ideal in STELLA DALLAS (1937). Moreover, had Miss Shirley been older at the time actresses were being tested for the role of “Scarlett O’Hara” in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939), I think she would have been a superior choice to Vivien Leigh.
Fans of author L.M. Montgomery who appreciate Anne Shirley’s namesake-leading-role performance in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1934) will recognize and welcome the resurrection of the heroine’s delightful personality here.

This was a good movie showing how prevalent the class system was then as it is now. Anne Shirley was perfect as always and her beautiful Noah Beery was good to see how handsome he was before being James Garner's dad in The Rockford Files. This movie rates a golden 10.

She looks so much like Olivia De Havilland and her acting and personality is like Olivia also. I love both of them.
