No one can play perfectly and excellently for the role of Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe except these two: Megan Follows, and Jonathan Crombie. They are so lovable that the roles were really destined for both of them.
I definitely like the Megan Follows movies best, particularly the portrayal of Marilla by the late, great Colleen Dewhurst. No one else could ever be Marilla to me after seeing Miss Dewhurst in the role.
Yes most definitely...Jon Crombie does such an awesome job capturing Gill's emotions and what he would have been thinking/feeling when rejected... Of course Megan just encapsulated the entire role...

Very interesting! And you found every production which is amazing. I like Megan's Anne the best--actually everyone in the whole production played their roles so well. Imho the 40's version was stiff, the 70's was too--well, theatrical. The slate scene in the 1985 version makes the most sense as well. Anne picks up Gilbert's slate instead of her own looks more impulsive.
I always had to laugh at the 1930's version where they change up the ending so that Matthew doesn't die and Anne and Gil instantly fall in love. And that the actress legally changed her name to Anne Shirley. LOL I think this video is great, but it might be a help if you put in years the movies were made and possibly countries that made them as well just for reference.
It's hard for me to say because I read the books after I saw the first Follow movie, so I think that when I read the books, I saw her as Anne. It is interesting to look at the different interpretations. I wonder if we'll get a new Anne in the future.
Imagine legally changing your name to Anne Shirley based off of the character you played, only for a far superior actress to do the same role 51 years later and fully encompass it.
Yes, the actress's pseudonym was Dawn O'Day [I don't recall her real name],and then she changed her name to Anne Shirley once she landed this part. The stiffness of demeanor of the earlier films is probably more like what Anne of the books would act like. I certainly didn't imagine Anne in the books to be as energetic as Megan or the BBC Anne.
Which proposal? The one in the 2nd movie or the ones in these others? Honestly I can feel Gil's emotions in the 2nd movie and my heart breaks for him just as much as his does... Honestly, I think the other's in the older versions are overacting and trying too hard, Megan Follows is Anne, she is Anne from start to finish
I wish they had continued on with Anne's story in the anime. Megan and Jonathan will always be my Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe, but the anime is lovely as well.
Hi! I know im like over a decade late... but do you happen to have the scene from anne of avonlea where gilbert slaps her behind and she says shes not a horse?
Great work InsubordinationFreak. I think that the most recent Anne (megan follows?) looked the most like how I imagine Anne as a child - - the BBC Anne looks the most as I imagined her as an adult - - but the 1930's 1940's Anne (wasn't her name also Anne Shirley if I recall?) ACTS the most like how I think Anne would act. What do you think?
What fun. I didn't even know there was a 1940s version. Those animated ones were harsh on Gil's pate; cartoon Anne is violent. :) The Anne with the blue dress sitting on the ground was harsh too - rejecting him so curtly ("I thought I made that clear") adn then asking if they are still friends. Ridiculous. Thanks, InsubordinationFreak. Now I have more Anne movies to find.
No one can play perfectly and excellently for the role of Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe except these two: Megan Follows, and Jonathan Crombie. They are so lovable that the roles were really destined for both of them.
if jonathan crombie was destined for something it was the role of gilbert blythe no one will ever be a better gilbert blythe than him
I totally agree. JC was Gilbert.
Lucas Jade Zumann
Now we have
The same for Megan Follows as Anne.
I have to say the Megan Follows version is the most superior version over every other....bar none.
Megan was my first celebrity crush. Well perhaps Erin Gray (Colonel Wilma Deering) snuck in earlier.
I would say that Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie were the best actors to play Anne and Gilbert as compared to the others who portrayed them.
jonathan crombie will always be my gilbert blythe the same way colin firth will always be mr darcy!
Megan Follows doesn't just pwn Anne Shirley... she IS Anne Shirley. The other versions are so mediocre... they don't stand out at all.
I definitely like the Megan Follows movies best, particularly the portrayal of Marilla by the late, great Colleen Dewhurst. No one else could ever be Marilla to me after seeing Miss Dewhurst in the role.
Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie are Anne and Gilbert. Hope we will have a new movie with them.
Crombie is dead now, unfortunately. Anyway, Kevin Sullivan fucked up after Anne of Avonlea.
omggggggggggg..... i cant stand the other versions..... Megan Follows and the 1985/1986 versions are the only ones that work....
Yes most definitely...Jon Crombie does such an awesome job capturing Gill's emotions and what he would have been thinking/feeling when rejected...
Of course Megan just encapsulated the entire role...
Megan Follows is the best one I've ever seen... she really brings the "redhaired temper" to life!!!
rest in peace Jonathan Crombie. He passed away in 2016.
Kevin Sullivan is Johnathan crombie is a live he is to is a Lie you didn’t know what he is ask

I have to agree...Megan Follows completely encompasses her character of Anne Shirley. The other's it seems to me are just 'over acting'...BRAVO!
Megan Follows is the best Anne Shirley and Jonathan Crombie was the best Gilbert Blythe. No one comes close to them.
Very interesting! And you found every production which is amazing. I like Megan's Anne the best--actually everyone in the whole production played their roles so well. yes, megan follows won a juno (canadian emmy) for her role as anne - and you can see her accepting it on youtube somewhere :)
Thanks for posting. I can't see anyone but Jonathan Crombie playing Gilbert. I wish he would have done a lot more film (stateside).
It's hard for me to say because I read the books after I saw the first Follow movie, so I think that when I read the books, I saw her as Anne. It is interesting to look at the different interpretations. I wonder if we'll get a new Anne in the future.

All the other versions save Megan's is so unreal
Anne's hair supposed to be red. Not brunnette nor chesnut brown
It wasn’t Anne and Gilbert that went to Europe, but their sons. One son didn’t make it back...

The anime was actually really good. I got a hold of it on ebay and was very impressed at its fidelity to the book.
Which proposal? The one in the 2nd movie or the ones in these others? Honestly I can feel Gil's emotions in the 2nd movie and my heart breaks for him just as much as his does...

Where on earth did you find clips from the Anne of Windy Poplars film?????? Do you know of a place where I can download or buy it online?
What's the name of the black and white movie you showed? I've seen the B/W Anne of Green Gables, but not the clips you had....!
Anne in Windy Poplars 1940s
Anne Shirley is a action movie star!!!
give him the slate give him the slate
please?!??!? that was my CHILDHOOD!
OMG! CAN YOU PUT MORE CLIPS UP OF 1:14?!
the new one with megan follows is so much better
Megan Follows is the ONLY ANNE. End of story. It's the only version that has the essence of the books.
With the best theme song played by Hagood Hardy "Together" aka Anne's Theme.
The dress Anne wears as Diana’s maid of honor was also worn by Helena Bonham Carter in “Room With a View.”
the Anime one looked wierd...
The only, truly, wholeheartedly... Anne...with an E!
It’s actually really good
ธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์. บวรมงคล.
The first Gilbert shown didn't pull her hair. He chose wisely.
Thanks for posting this :) It's great.
Weel youa reaction this is 2021
👇
You should make a second video including "Anne with an e" scenes
Preparing to costume a stage production of AoGG. That was helpful research. Thanks for putting that together.
4:20 is not like the characters at all... and strange accent lol.

Holy shit i never knew they made an anime version
Nicely done!
Hi! I know im like over a decade late... but do you happen to have the scene from anne of avonlea where gilbert slaps her behind and she says shes not a horse?
*Jajaja la risa de los chicos cuando truena la pizarra sobre Gilbert en 1985, en la traducción al español no se oyen*

I would love to be able to see Anne of Windy Poplars (1940), but I have never been able to find it.
Ella Ballantine the best.
