  • Welcome Aboard SV Blue Moon,
    If you enjoyed this video and want to support us directly, you can receive access to our episodes Ad-Free, our chat community and much more at / bluemoonlife These videos are made possible by the generosity of viewers like you and we want to thank you so much for being here!
    Join us on a tour of our home, a 1978 Catalina 30 sailboat named Blue Moon. We have lived aboard our tiny home in Downtown Victoria, BC for 6 months now. We are learning to optimize our new space and are slowly working out the kinks of living in our small space.
    We have put a lot of time into getting Blue Moon "liveaboard" ready. She is equipped with hot running water, AC and DC power, a working kitchen, and many other comforts of home!
    Let us know what you think in the comments below!
    Thanks for watching, and we'll see you in our next video.

      Yes, and the price is right. I keep looking for a swing keel Catalina 25, and it’s like searching for a needle in a haystack! We need the shoal draft, as we live on the Hudson River about 130 miles north of NYC. We would also love to cruise the Bahamas and T&C, and that one boat would do it all for us.

      We started with an O’day 20, then a 25 and ended up with the 30.
      There were a few Catalinas and Hunters in the area at that time(Mississippi gulf coast).

    There is a plastic mat of sorts that is made specifically for boats to go under your mattress to help deal with moisture. I believe it is made in BC. The Foam Zone - it’s called Hypervent. I have seen it used by van dwellers, as they also have moisture issues. It could be a good investment for you guys. K

    To aid with condensation under the bed may want buy or make a bed spring like those in European and Asian RVs. You can see them on you tube videos tours of RVs. They create about 1 to 2 inch space that provides cushion and ventilation under the mattress.

    Thank you for the tour of your "tiny home." I think living aboard a boat is the best tiny home solution as many communities, as least in the United States, have restrictions how and where one can live in a tiny home on a trailer. My issue lately is finding a marina (Florida) where I can affordably live year-round on a small sailboat (about 25 foot) since the cost has risen about 250% since last year. It seems most are in price-gouge mode. Best of luck to you.

    I don't miss the condensation and lack of insulation tho hehe! I don't know if you guys have found a solution for your mattress yet.. but I found that those outdoor fake wood tiles that you can find at garden center, work like a charm under the mattress. They elevate the mattress a little and leave air flow underneath! Way better and cheaper than the stuff you can buy in marine stores to put under cushions.. that stuff compress under the weight of your body and doesn't do the job well. Happy to share my liveaboard tips with you guys!

    As a fellow sailboater and guitar player, you might want to look into 'parlor' sized guitars. They have smaller bodies which helps on a sailboat, and the string length (called 'scale') is shorter. Your classical isn't too bad, but that dreadnaught is a big bodied guitar. The Gretsch G9500 and Fender CP-60S are quite inexpensive and are small bodied parlors. If you want to spend a little more, the Taylor BT1 Baby Taylor is a big jump in build quality...well worth it if you can afford it.

    • @BlueMoonLife
      @BlueMoonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You might consider drilling ventilation holes in the cabinet faces of the V-birth. Also, my cousin has a lot of luck with a wind generator in Massachusetts to supplement the shallow sun in the winter. I’ve seen them used on eBay at a relatively decent price, and I suspect with just two of you on board it would fill the gap. It looks like a lovey boat, and I bet you save a bundle on rent! We were in Toronto over the summer, and we were shocked at how expensive housing was near the lake. It was much like New York and Seattle.

    Nice little boat ! I have wondered why you guys live at the dock. I think now I figured it out, your boat may not have enough creature comforts. And enough food storage. 30 ft takes a lot of planning for long times away from shore. Plus you don’t have a cook range. Your boat wasn’t set up to be a live aboard boat !
    But it is still enjoyable and pretty nice. And I am sure living in another place and using the boat for fun is probably not an option right now. So maybe in the future you can make a change. If you want to live on a boat maybe you can get a bigger boat later on. And right now your channel may not bring in enough revenue to do different. So good luck !

    I'm moving to Victoria in the fall and was looking into liveaboard sailboats kind of as a far-out dream, but its so cool to see you guys pulling it off! From what i've gathered from around the web, there's a limited number of marinas in Vic that allow liveaboards and the spots are very hard to get. Did you buy the boat with the slip? Or did you have a referral into the marina? :) Thanks so much, this tour was so inspiring!

    • @BlueMoonLife
      @BlueMoonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is very exciting! We applied for this slip, although we were very lucky to get in (there is often a long wait list). I suppose the timing just worked out :D Good luck in your search for a liveaboard!!

    Great video. I have a modern 34' boat and you seem to have way more storage space. I am curious about what happens when you sail - do you have to "Sailify" the cabin? Looks like there would be a ton of stuff on the sole once the boat heels. Are you planning on cruising into the North West Islands?

    • @BlueMoonLife
      @BlueMoonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot! Yes we definitely will have to stow everything away once we get back out on the water. We're hunkered down for the winter right now and will probably remove some shore-bound items before cruising again this summer. We hope to go north one day, perhaps up to Princess Louisa and on towards Bella Bella. And we would really like to circumnavigate Vancouver Island at some point as well...but lots to learn and practice first.

    I use 1 1/2 inch SM blue foam under my mattress in my RV all winter. Just went through a week of - 30 at night
    No problem
    Wood Slats underneath may add ventilation

    7:00 Wow! Front hatch= I bet those bolts sticking down, feels good on the head? Looks like there could have been a better design in that.
    Quick suggestion maybe: There is a golf ball, that is manufactured. It is a solid material construction. Drill small hole in it, maybe thread it to screw over the bolts.
    Condensation is a bitch to deal with. It happens with cold out side temp. and warm inside. It happens with campers also. Due to the lack of, or no insulation. Campers it's normally around the windows. You can move the air around by fans. It's very unlikely it will help. Maybe make your bed area warmer. Creating more condensation.
    Hope this helps!

    • @BlueMoonLife
      @BlueMoonLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tambi! It is about $750/month if you consider all the normal associated costs. There are several docks around the area that allow liveaboards...and if you call the harbour authorities or check their websites they have lots of good info!
