    That rigging sound in the wind reminds me of many weekends of my chilhood on my dad's boats. It the marina's concerto. Tink-tink-tink-tink interspersed with the whistle of the wind. I didn't mind it at all.

    Hi, great video. Our first sailboat was a 1986 Catalina 22. We bought it in 1988 and sailed it on a small inland lake in Southern Ohio. The brochure said "it sleeps five"....I told my wife "four of them better be pretty cute". 😎
    Anyway, we sailed that lake from March to November on our Catalina 22, then our Hunter 25, then our Hunter 27.
    We retired, sold our house in ohio and in florida and bought a 1976 Pearson 365 ketch in 2002. Weve been cruising full-time for 22 years on the Pearson and have been from Nove Scotia to Grand Turk.
    Were slowing down now, im 78 and shes 77 but we're still sailing thousands of miles a year.
    My point is that there's a line that runs from your weekend Catalina 22 to a full-time cruising sailboat dream.
    Good luck and enjoy the adventure.

    Loved the ending! 13:00 Its too true. Some people wait their whole lives for the "right moment" to make their dreams come true and often that moment never comes. Life is a struggle but a beautiful ride either way. Keep up with the great content. Hope to buy my own sailboat soon :)

    I echo all the positive comments below. I had a San Juan 21, followed by a Cat 22 in Miami when I was 25-27. Then I married a non-sailor, sold the Cat and haven't sailed much since. Now, I'm retired, still married to the non-sailor, but now I have grandkids and they think "Big Pa Pa" should get another trailerable sailboat, which I will be doing shortly.

    Hello, I have been enjoying a 1986 C-22 for about 19 years now. Some suggestions, the pop top is an interesting feature BUT make absolutely certain that it's fastened tight. You would not want it coming down on someone's fingers. Some users have added gas struts to make it safer. We have a swing keel and I used to dock in a more exposed but shallow part of our lake. Because it was shallow, I had to have the swing keel up either part way or all the way up a good part of the summer. The problem with doing that is that the turning ball will saw through the keel cable because of the cable tension and small lateral movements of the keel. I've had to replace that cable several times. Now that I'm docked in a deeper marina, the cable has been fine for about 10 years. You do not want that keel cable to snap and have the keel drop. Your old style looks to be in beautiful condition. 🙂

    Thanks for the tour. All the Catalinas are nice, even the smallest ones.
    V-berth is the word. The side stays are called shrouds. Ropes are called lines when used on a boat. Not trying to be rude. It's important to have the right names for things to avoid confusion.

    ‘V’ Berth !
    Love the solar Bluetooth speaker and the monocular
    Thanks for the sailing book recommendation
    I have a 22 (Jaguar - same design and construction licensed in the UK by Catalina back in 76) so it’s great seeing how others have made adaptations for cruising comfort.
    I’ve reviewed my sail stowage so I have a stack-pack on the boom with lazy jacks and a 120% Genoa on a Plastimo furler with everything led back to the cockpit for solo sailing. I too, need to re-seal my port lights and also the roof through bolts (no pop top on my boat!) where the hand rails and companionway hatch slides are fastened.
    Thanks for the tour and fair winds....

Some good info, could use compare with catamarans, new foils, general house boat life stuff... Water keel balast seen on one, seemed advantageous, maybe dual (fresh/salt) bladder system for longer fresh water cruising/crossing...

    and i am currently living on it in an marina in Queensland. i have found an lager boat but i have to wait for the borders to open as we are still in lockdown even though the regs are lifting borders in Australia are closed. I learned a lot from living on board boats and it dose not matter weather you have a small boat or an large one. The main things to remember is that the smaller boat is easyer to owen and manage on an low income, and that you are both happy on the boat.

      The little panel is just two wires, positive and negative, low voltage since it's just USB and volt meter. Very simple. If I did it again, I would not install the giant on/off switch it's not necessary. The fuse block is standard and comes on the boat.

    Cool little boat, except for the head facilities. The sail area looks small - how fast is a normal passage? Do you ever hit six or seven knots? Sadly, my partner has some physical limitations that keep us ashore. I get to sail vicariously with the fine people like you who share their experiences. Seems like there are a ton of Catalina 22s. Do the Florida no-see-ums bother you close to shore? Thanks for posting.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've seen a little more than five knots, usually more like 3-4. We don't see any no-see-ums - not even on land... and I've lived here since 1991. Maybe they're more inland, not sure but even when we go camping we don't see or feel them. Thanks for watching!

      I can lay up there and I'm six feet tall, but it's too hard to get in and out - I think kids only. It's nicer to sleep where the table is, if you have to sleep on this boat.

      6'. You'll be right on the top when seated. My hair touched it so I don't think it would work, but you could just go look at one and try it.

    Just curious, did you name your channel on the tv series "Adventures in Paradise"? The 85' schooner Tiki was a pretty nice sailing vessel and if you've never seen it, you should check it out.

      @@AdventuresInParadise A little escapism in these troubled times could be therapeutic. The only problem is that most of the copies floating around are not very good quality. The premise that an ex navy guy with this beautiful schooner, out of Pape'ete Tahiti, hauling cargo and getting into adventures was a fun story line. Fair winds and following seas.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never raised or lowered the mast. A crane would be needed for the O'day but the Catalina 22 can be lowered by hand. Maybe you meant the sail?

    Just curious, is the gas tank in the locker safe? I've read that because of venting and loose gas fumes etc you don't want it venting into the hull of the boat. Gas tank lockers are supposed to be completely sealed off. Is that locker sealed off? Is the tank some special outside venting tank?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is how pre-1986 Catalina 22's were made and it hasn't been an issue with thousands of them made, so I guess it works. I suppose if you had a gas leak you might. The compartment is vented above the tank. This compartment was changed to a sealed off version on '86 and after models, along with other improvements.
