    VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
    This unique tour is one that must not be missed. Joe, a Navy serviceman, has been living on "Toko" his 36ft, 1982 Ed Munk offshore yacht for the last year! Living tiny isn't new to Joe as he was part of the #vanlife movement traveling around Japan, but living on a boat full time was a whole new beast. Fortunately, the previous owners took immaculate care of interior but like anything from 1982 there needed to a facelift. The auto-pilot, electronics, and electric wench were all areas that Joe tackled. With so much space to hang both in the interior and on the "back deck," Joe has really made this boat his home. Awesome job Joe, and may you have fair winds and flowing seas!

      The only thing I'd suggest is getting the oven working. It may not be a problem for him based on what he cooks, but it's real quality of life improvement in any kitchen to have the option of baking stuff. Speaking as someone who had to deal with busted ovens until recently.

    Love it. I did the same in order to save money and retire early. It was the early days of the "simple living" movement, shortly after the book, "Your Money or Your LIfe," was first published in 1990. My boat wasn't anywhere near as nice as Joe's, but I loved living on it anyway. It was a 1972, 35-foot pontoon houseboat that I owned for 23 years and lived on for eight. It was more like a floating RV. I was able to save about 70% of my income while living on that boat as I worked my way toward retirement. It took about 15 years before I retired, but that's not bad considering I had almost nothing when I began. And it wasn't even a sacrifice. There is nothing better than living on the water, at least in my view. I loved every minute of it. I've been retired for 13 years now and often think of returning to a life on the water.

    It's great that you decided to do this while you're still young. So many people plan on doing something like this after they retire and then they never do, because their health or finances won't allow it. Some of them never even make it to retirement before passing on, so "live while you're alive!" I've lived in motor homes, travel trailers and fifth wheels for many years while following my work (construction) and I never regretted it! Lots of good memories and stories to be shared later!

    Good for you! When I was in the Navy, I too was stationed at the ASW base in San Diego for a while. A trawler like that of same size sailboat would have been perfect. After I got out, I moved back home to Florida where I wanted to buy an old classic sport fish yacht and do a live-aboard like you have there. Found one reasonable but my dad insisted I don't buy it and I ended up giving up on the idea to do that. Big regrets and I always dreamed of living that life style! So here I am 37 yrs later being inspired by you to make that move one day. Soon!!! ;) Thank you for sharing!

    Ret 21 year Navy Vet, 8 year liveaboard previously while on active duty. Great video and it looks like you chose your boat well for the purpose it serves you. Its got a lot of great features for a liveaboard. I think that "drop in cabinet storage" is actually a "cold box" where you use ice to keep things like milk, cold cuts and beer cold to conserve space in the small Fridges that are often installed on a boat. I used mine for storage too but you can also install a chiller plate and keep it cold that way if you want and need more space.

    • @raywells2858
      @raywells2858 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If your gonna be a liveaboard...dont underestimate the need for a great galley, large fridge, plenty of storage space and bathroom facilities! Dont skimp on boat size either although after about 40 ft slips become harder to find and much more expensive per a foot. Big enough "to work well enough" will most likely find you seriously wanting in the near future! Before you buy a used boat, make sure you spring for the extra expense for a out of water Marine Survey so you get a rock solid boat to start your adventure on. It will be the best 500-1000 dollars you have ever spent, probably get the owner to come down on price and will be needed most likely for insurance purposes. Insurance is cheaper for a diesel vs gas and much safer! Be advised most insurance companies will not insure the boat if they find out your living on it!!! If you live in an area that gets cold, unlike very mild San Diego (ie...Seattle), condensation is a huge issue you will have to figure out how to deal with!

    My grandpa had a boat like this from a similar era with 2 bunks in the V birth (drawer storage below) and rather than a dinette, he put a bed frame in the salon. That way, my brother and I could have our own spaces when we came to visit each summer. What started as a 2 week trip became a 2 month annual adventure with him--we even circumnavigated Long Island! A lifelong mechanic and electrician, he ultimately came to rest in an old Palm Beach GMC motor coach, with plans to park it at his favorite Mexican campground on his mind. RIP

    Great video... We almost bought a boat to live on when young, but it never happened and I regret it. Do what you can afford while you can, because by the time you can afford to do a lot more, the desire or ability to do it is gone. Water skiing was my passion when young, kayaking, drone flying, and photography are what I do at 75.

    Very nice!! I grew up on a house boat during the summers on the west coast. My dad was an avid fisherman. I was really young and an only child but grew to love the coast and the smell of the ocean. My dads boat was the MERRILLJAUNA.
    I loved fishing and cleaned my own catch by the time I was 10.
    Both fish and crab.
    Anyway, I love your boat. Have fun with it and make sure not to cross borders illegally like my dad did once into canada as he didnt realize he had done so. Boy what a memory.
    Thank you for sharing
