this was OUR BOAT!!! We sold her around 2011 or so, to a person who wanted to race her, in Folsom Lake, I believe. Looking at the video, she's the same even down to the pillows in the v-berth, which my wife made. The picture in the salon is a photo of Tarbert Harbor in the Hebrides, and your dinette table, I made as the original was just cheap plywood. I also added the heavy duty dogs which hold the table to the cabin. We had a VHF, full cruising lights for sailing at night or anchoring, and that mess of wiring is definitely NOT ours! We did all the wiring with marine grade connections, protected by heat shrink over the connections. Originally from Antelope, we even cruised her in the San Juans one August, leaving from Anacortes. We moved to high in the Cascades, and sailing in some of the lakes here, because of the steep-sided mountain surrounding them, makes them subject to high winds. We miss her, but it looks like she's doing a good job for you. She's a wonderful little boat!!

This is so awesome haha. Love seeing comments like these. One time we ran into my mom's old car. The guy we sold it to lied to the new owner and said a new motor was put in it. He popped the hood open and my father (a mechanic) knew it was the same engine from when we had it. But it was nice seeing the car again a few years later. Can't imagine seeing it on TH-cam though! Haha

This is probably one of the best videos I’ve ever seen for a “boat tour.” A lot of us cruise TH-cam watching model specific videos, hoping to pick up one or two tidbits of info out of dozens (if there are dozens) of 5-10 min videos. This one video topped all of that in one place. Thank you for going through the effort of making it.

Oh Juan, this brings back memories. My folks had one built in 1982; Dad had bought a Sunfish in 1979 & lo & behold Mom loved it so much 6 weeks later they bought a used 22'. 3 yrs later they had one custom-built. Sailed every weekend they could down in Oklahoma. Dad died in '85, Mom tried on her own but it was hard (memories, not lack of sailors or ability) & sold it in '87. VERY FUN BOAT! Enjoy!

We had a Catalina 27 and we had it at the time in Channel Islands. My dad and I raced sailboats and dad sold his Clipper 21 for the Catalina. The Clipper 21 is similar to the Cat22 with the retractable keel. Anyway one day we came back into Port after a race and there in front of the yacht club was the first ever Catalina 30. It was a bit beat up from testing and my dad inquired about it and eventually bought it. Well Butler took the boat back to the factory in Canoga Park and completely refurbished it for us and then my dad put a bow sprit on her and stepped the mast to the keel and added 10 feet to the length for racing. The boat had no interior as it was number one. They build these in three pieces, hull, deck and interior. Well the interior mold was not done and Butler wanted to get it into the boat show so he slapped the deck on it and locked it so no one could get inside. After that he used it for weight and balance testing for the interior design and thats how we came to buy it with no interior. The boat sat about a foot above the waterline because it was so light and our racing handicap was so extreme do to that it was hard to win a race even when we finished first. Anyway, we named the 27 Fury and the 30 was named Rage. If you ever see a Cat 30 named Rage it is number 1 and was my dads boat.

Juan, my name is Jose. I live in South Florida. I just started to see your video about the Catalina 22 Sailboat. My spouse and I just came back from visiting my elderly Mom in Pensacola. While we were there my brother-in-law happened to have a Catalina 22 in his commercial warehouse and showed it to me. He said he takes it out, from time to time, out in the Perdido Key area, where the water is nice and calm. He mentioned that if I was interested, he would get it ready for next summer and that my spouse and I could go sailing with him and my sister (his wife). It's a long story but I have always been fascinated by sailboats! So here I am, learning all about your boat, which looks just like his. I like the way you present yourself (down to earth) and the way you take the time to mention important things about boating. I continue to watch your videos and maybe experience sailing next summer. So happy to find you and your videos Juan! Thank you! Joe.

1975 Catalina 22 swing keel no pop top. First boat I ever owned. Bought her with my first commission check from Pioneer at the age of 18. You know a couple guys/couples sailed a group of them from Texas down to Guatemala and then off to the Caymens returning to Key West about a decade ago. There was a write up about them going and returning but then the follow up story never materialized. Basically they said the sailing was easy it you watched for the weather windows and sailed to the boats near limits not yours. Controversy with the visit to Cuba I think kept the whole article out of print. Search youtube and you can find two video interviews.

I've owned two trailersailors and the sight of that keel winch handle below the companionway made me cringe. It is an ACCIDENT waiting to happen....not to mention an annoying tripping hazard.
If this was my boat I would make the winch handle easily/conveniently removable with a stowage solution close by. While there is no problem at all if the keel is down (in the water) or if the keel weight is resting on a block/rest while on the trailer (something you should do to minimize wear)...the problem is one day somebody is going to forget the keel is up (450 pounds hanging on that wire) and then trip/nudge the winch handle and that handle will turn into a WEAPON in a nanosecond. An untimely simple failure of a small part in the winch mechanism will do the same.
With a boat like that more often than not you will anchor in shallow water with the keel up... then you, the wife and the kids will go by that winch handle lots of times going in and out of the cabin during the evening. As a captain, it is NO FUN AT ALL having a family member or guest seriously injure a foot or hand...especially when you're one day's sail away from your tow vehicle.

First of all, good job with the video. Very informative. As a Catalina 22 owner, one can appreciate the detail provided in your video.
I wanted to touch on the subject of the keel bolt. The keel bolt isn’t to “lock the keel” in place, rather to act as a friction brake in the event of grounding or hitting obstacles in the water so as to not damage the keel trunk; essentially to slow the boat down in a controlled manner. There is a common misconception with the keel bolt and it’s purpose. The Macgregor Venture had a keel bolt design that went through the head of the keel. The through bolt was specifically chosen to bend or break in the event of an underwater collision, which could easily be replaced. Beefing up or changing the design of the keel bolt on the Catalina 22 would be contradictory to the design plan; which if changed could result in damaging the keel trunk (thin fiberglass) to a point which could result in loss of the vessel or keel. Just some food for thought. See below for some interesting references regarding the subject.

Great video. I think C-22 is more capable than just being a lake boat. I think retractable keel design makes much better sailing boat than shoal draft. However, they stopped investing and now this design is still used on some large yacht and much more sophisticated. I personally don't think that 1 ton boat makes a practical trailer sailer. I think 30-45 minutes launching time is overly optimistic. I would say it would take about an hour to hour and a half for two adults. It could be much longer in the beginning. I think this size sailboat being marketed as trailer sailer is what discourages a lot of people who use it as a starter boat. Nevertheless she's a real beauty and in fantastic shape and loads of fun for persistent sailors.

A vetran sail maker told me of the "boat owner" conditioning exercises you need to perform before owning a boat.
    1) Remove the screen on your shower drain. 2) Put on rain slickers. 3) turn water on full cold. 4) stand and rip up $100 dollar bills, watch them dissapear down the drain. But would not change my 30 years of boating for nothing.

  • @davidbrayshaw3529

I have to say, that was a very good purchase. You're dead right about electrical systems on boats. They do have a tendency to look exactly like yours, but on a boat like that, you can probably live without it, in this day and age, but it might make a good project for winter. It would certainly make the boat more liveable for a couple of days out. Only poor sailors drink warm beer!
One thing that I noticed was your through hulls. You might want to consider replacing those along with the hose work and double clamp them with quality marine grade clamps.
These are potential points of failure with potentially life ending consequences. You might also consider having some tapered dowls onboard within easy reach with which you can plug holes in the unlikely event of a disaster. And one last thing. Trailer wheel bearings and electricals.
Once again, great purchase. Get the family out for a few weekends over summer and its paid for itself at the price you got her for. Enjoy her, I'm envious.

A little time, some solder, shrink wrap, cable clips and tesa tape and you could have that mess cleaned up and professional looking! The Tesa tape is one of the things manufacturers cheap out on, except in the automotive industry! Also before starting buy some 1 x 3/4 Inch Panduit Self-Laminating Laser Inkjet Labels, 91 are $5.79+$3.49 with no tax at "show me labels", use them to label your wiring connections!
Just start with a diagram or layout, use labels, use new wire if possible to replace the mess and pre-wire it all to the control unit, then install it, if you have to do tie-ins just make sure you solder the connections and that you labelled them, only use quick push type connectors where something needs to be removed and reconnected regularly, a cheap 100 watt gun type iron works best for these jobs!
If you need an idea of what I am talking about just swing over to "five star car stereo" and watch a few videos of how they do car audio installations, you are basically doing the same thing on a boat and they could show you some great pointers for fixing your wiring mess, they make their installs look as close to factory as possible and never leave a mess!

Excellent overview of the Catalina 22. Nice example here given its likely age. It's more of a coastal pocket cruiser than a lake boat with that heavy swing-keel and no mast lowering system. Polish lake boats have some ballast in the bilge, plus a much lighter swing centreboard, drawing a foot of water when up. They also have an A-frame at the bow, which allows the mast and furled headsail to be lowered or raised in minutes under way using a winch at the cockpit. More ocean-going versons have a stub keel and swing centreboard, drawing perhaps a foot and a half when up (somebody sailed a TES 22 footer across the Atlantic a few years ago). I'm surprised that Polish-style lake sailboats have not caught on in a bigger way; the Macgregor sailboats of some years ago were much less substantial than the Polish ones. That style of trailer sailboat certainly opens up many lakes and rivers, allowing easy passage in shallow passages beneath low bridges between sailing areas, e.g. the finger lakes of Ontario and New York state. The Canadian equivalent of the Catalina 22 is the Shark, a 24 footer, which also is extensively raced and has also crossed oceans, but it has a fixed keel.

You might want to use the keel lock if there is the possibility of a lot of wakes. When a C22 with a swing keel hits a wake and pitches, the keel, if not locked, tends not to move with the boat, The result is that the keel can slam against the hull and potentially damage the hull and the swing pin. The keel lock keeps that from happening, although a big wake can bend the keel lock bolt. I found that out the hard way on my swing keel boat back in the 70s (a Venture 21). The fix was easy. Basically I drilled the hole through the keel that the lock bolt went through to 3/4" from the 1/4" it came as. I machined a derlin insert to just fit into the keel and also give a snug fit for a 1/2" stainless steel bolt The heavier bolt gave a stronger lock and the derlin insert stopped the unpleasant banging of the keel against the lock bolt. The only hard part of the project was dropping the keel, but at only 550 lbs that can be done easily with a couple of hydraulic jacks (after you get the boat off the trailer). C22s are nice lake boats though.

    • @todddunn945
      @todddunn945 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes Mike, Derlin. Derlin doesn't swell when it gets wet like nylon does. It is also easy to machine and drill. The idea is to provide a strong, snug, low friction mount for the keel bolt.

The wiring is so bad bc in old boats they have typically been diy jobs to replace original corroded wiring. Often this gets compounded the more the boat has changed hands.

The kitchenette went in what you called the quarter birth. I agree with the bad wireing. Its why many boats burn. Catalina didnt make replacing the wireing easy either, but every boat has its issues.
Also, a twin air mattress fits perfectly over the dinette. I keep my air matress, pillow, sheets and large beach towels in a laundry vacuum laundry bag. Then if i need my towels for a blanket i have them or there are always towels if needed.

Great boat tour. If I am looking at a Catalina 22, and it is a beginner's boat, we would not understand all the terminology anyway. I learned to sail alone 50 years ago and I still don't know much more than starboard has two Rs and it means right. We had the same El Toro as an American Airlines pilot down the canal from us. Interesting how pilots like the wind!

I keep searching for boat tours for the trailer sailers I am interested in - there's not much out there that compares with this. Thank you for posting and sharing your boat.

Beautiful video thank you, she is a beauty, there is one for sale here in Ireland at the moment and I can't make my mind up about it!. I love the idea of the cooler boxes for the bed. Best wishes. Gérard lacey in Ireland.

Great tour! Glad I stumbled upon this. Would love to master one of these things but I'm afraid my starter would have to be a Sunfish.

Interesting, I have owned about 40 Cat 22, 5 Cat 25, and 3 Cat 30 sailboats. Catalina boats are good for the beginner due to all the info and help on the internet.

Have a look at my videos I am busy restoring a 17 ft boat. I agree wiring is a mess. Is there not a way to keep power local to different light etc. So you don't have wires running through the boat.

Great primer video on the Cat 22', Juan! Dean and I used to sail Capri 22's on San Diego Bay as members of Harbor Island Yacht Club, which only featured Capris in the 22' model, plus other larger craft--all rentals owned by the Club! We passed our quals during the America's Cup Regatta ahead of the Cup Race in 1988--it was a roaring baptism by fire but an exhilarating accomplishment! Many great memories of times on those 22's and the 280 (I think Hunter) in San Diego Bay! Happy Sailing to the Brownes! ;-)

The wiring issues are always the result of a quickie repair on the water, or a tool bag solution on the dock while the family is nagging you to get out on the water

Cat 22's are great boats. There are many Catalina sites on the web with good advice. Wiring on the boats started out fine but after a few owners they all end up wired by bears. Be sure and look over the keel hardware, it will avoid the embarrassment of being unable to load the boat because the keel winch has failed in some sneaky way. And check the pivot also believe me that can be a weekend ruiner if it drops the keel.

Juan, you triggered a lot of memories. 45 years ago I was shopping for a trailer sailer, and the Catalina 22 was at the top of my list. Financial limitations placed me in a South Coast 22 instead. It wasn't a bad boat, but I really would have preferred the Catalina.

Nice video. Many people sail the Catalina 22 in SF Bay. I can't resist though. Sailboats don't "tip," they "heal" or "heal over."

    Juan,
As a retired pilot, sailor and motorcyclist I enjoyed your quality and well informed videos. Many trips from my Midwest base into the Bay Area, SoCal and Central Valley have given me an interest in keeping up on local news.
Keep up the good work! ps: expect several RVs in your future, good finger crunchers too.

I learned to sail @ the BITTEREND Resort in NORTH END of VIRGIN GORDA BVI, Nick Trotters Sailing school Sailing 101, we used Rhodes 19 ft, named after cocktails, nice boat, NO engine, then you could stay on a CAL 27, also sail it. There were some 12 ft Boston Whalers, all you need /day was insurance.

Makes me have few misgivings about the 1986 Catalina 27 i'm about to assume ownership of. Missing the kind of stuff you just buy and carry aboard for the most part. Electronics and cook stove and little woodstove. All the rigging and sails look good. Recently gone thru 10hp. 2 stroke Merc. with broken mounting clamp.$2,500.
