  • My first time watching Solo!! This felt like a very, VERY different style of movie compared to the rest of the Star Wars movies that I have seen so far. I'm super happy that we got to see Chewbacca again and how he teamed up with Han!
    I was a bit confused with the timeline (I tend to do that a lot) and was hoping to see a certain character that, had I thought about it, I should never have thought was alive.

      Ten years before New Hope. They planned on a sequel but it didn't do well enough so questions remain. Heist movies usually have tons of double crosses. I like how they did it. The fact he says I have a good feeling about this was supposed to be ironically humorous. It wasn't supposed to add to the whole saga, just Han's origins. In that, it did a good job

    Considering how tumultuous this movie's production was, it's a damn achievement this movie is as watchable as it is, really.

    Solo didn't deserve the hate it got when it came out. You're right that it's definitely on the weaker side, and has issues, but it's still fun enough. A whole heap of production issues and problematic fandom issues kind of converged on this one.
    I will say that I don't think everything has to be connected, though. I think that's one of the problems in this one, actually. They spent too much time trying to connect Han to the bigger story instead of just letting him be Han. It's a whole universe out there. Not every adventure has to involve the Empire, Rebellion, Hutts, etc etc. They also spent too much time trying to explain every bit of his background (this is where the dice came from, this is where he got his blaster, this is how he got involved with Jabba, this is how he made the Kessel run, this is how he met Chewbacca). Just too much for one movie and too many little coincidences happening all at once.
    If you're looking for more bite-sized Star Wars content, there's also Star Wars: Visions. It's an anthology series and none of it is canon, so everything is stand alone and can get pretty wild, but it's really fun, and there are some really interesting episodes. Season 2 was also recently greenlit (though will focus less on Japanese creators).

    • @JackQSmith
      @JackQSmith ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. It didn't deserve all the hate. I thought it was a weird choice to recast Han Solo and do a prequel story and nothing against the actor but I didn't think he looked or sounded enough like Harrison Ford. But given they made those choices, the movie didn't turn out to be too bad. My 2nd favorite Disney Star Wars movie after Rogue One. And despite being a prequel there were some loose ends so I'd have been fine with either a sequel to Solo, or a spinoff with Maul and Keira (yeah I know it's spelled with a Q or something).

    • @dylandenney3980
      @dylandenney3980 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If I recall correctly, this and Rogue One were one of the first Star Wars films to take heavier cues from the larger Star Wars canon such as the Clone Wars show. This comes to a head with the Mandalorian show and its plot, so its definitely advisable to get caught up on Clone Wars, Bad Batch, and Rebels before getting into Mandalorian, as that show basically continues the stories from those other shows.

      Joonas Suotamo already played Chewie in certain scenes of Episode VII, because Peter Mayhew had a hard time walking. But Joonas would never tell, which scenes he is in, because he has a high regard for Peter.
      Although Peter was about 10 cm taller than Joonas, this probably was one of the best recasting, since Joonas copies Chewies mannerisms very well, and like Peter he seems the have the right energy to embody the role.
      But it‘s true that this is the first time that Joonas plays Chewie without any involvement of Peter.

    Not sure if it's by design or not, but the funny thing is when I watched this movie it reminded me of Indiana Jones as much as Han Solo, specifically the Last Crusade. Had a ton of the same story beats:
    Love interest that is a double agent who seems to side with the protagonist in the end but it still flawed.
    An ally that tells him not to trust anyone who later betrays him and even makes reference to his earlier advice when doing so.
    A mysterious faction that is hostile early in the movie who becomes friendly later.
    Train scene.
    We learn where they each got their name ("first name" for Indy, last name for Han).
    We see where they each got their main weapon as well as just about everything else about their backstories.

    Hey, Veronique! I enjoy "Solo" and feel it's a bit underrated. It's supposed to be a madcap hustle through the galaxy's seedier side. Originally, it was meant to be a trilogy but it suffered a negative backlash mostly from being released shortly after the controversy surrounding "The Last Jedi" and from reports of production difficulties like changing directors well into filming. Veteran Ron Howard completed the movie. I do hope they follow it up because it gets really interesting there at the end and I felt the cast had great chemistry!
    "Solo" is set 13-10 years before Episode IV. This is the early Imperial period and the Empire is still pacifying resistant worlds.
    This was Darth Maul's return to live-action played again by Ray Park! During this period, Maul is no longer associated with the Emperor. Darth Vader is the current apprentice. Maul runs the Crimson Dawn criminal syndicate. His return to galactic affairs after surviving being cut in half by Obi-Wan is chronicled extensively in the animated "Clone Wars".
    There's a deleted scene that should have stayed in the film which shows Han getting drummed out of Imperial flight school and reassigned to the infantry because he refused to comply with orders that put fellow pilots at risk. The Imperial officers felt obedience was more important than the acceptable losses they would have incurred.
    The Imperial checkpoint woman didn't double-cross Han and Qira as most reactors believe. Those were Proxima's goons who snatched Qira. The checkpoint lady honored the deal but called for Imperial security to break up the fracas!
    The positive attributes of "Solo" are:
    -- a busload of talent including Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover and Paul Bettany
    -- a brash, swaggering turn by Alden Ehrenreich that captures Harrison Ford's spirit
    -- the first meetings of Han, Lando and Chewie
    -- an excitingly vertiginous mountain railway heist
    -- the wildly imaginative Kessel Run sequence in which young Solo achieves his claim to fame of making it in 12 parsecs while tangling with a space-borne leviathan
    -- a glimpse into the early Empire's pacification of resistant worlds
    -- the twist that Enfys Nest is actually leader of a resistance cell and not a pirate
    -- the flurry of double- and triple-crosses at the climax
    -- the re-integration of Darth Maul into live-action with Ray Park reprising the role after the character's incredible return in the animated "Clone Wars"
    -- the revelations that the 'Millennium Falcon' was designed with a lifeboat that filled the gap at the front and has a top-tier navigational database from the L3 upload
    -- Han learns to fire first
    Han firing at Becket pre-emptively cutting him off mid-sentence was meant to rectify the digital alteration of having Greedo fire first upon Han in the cantina in Episode IV. That change made by Lucas to the Special Editions of the Classic trilogy still angers fans! Lol. Han is supposed to live a rough, dangerous existence and gallantly waiting to be fired upon first not only dilutes his character but is insanely reckless!
    The only negative plot point is that the menacing Enfys Nest is unmasked as a petite young girl! It's too much of a leap and beggars belief leading to eye rolls. An adult woman would have been fine and equally unexpected because of Nest's gravelly modulated voice. A cool-looking alien would have been even better. Surprise stunt-casting of an unexpected celebrity would have been the best of all! Erin Kellyman was grossly miscast.
    The bald, gray alien with the breathing apparatus and eye lenses among Nest's entourage is Benthic Two-Tubes, a Tognath. His eggmate was seen as a partisan in the future in "Rogue One".
    Clint Howard, Ron Howard's brother who is cast in every movie he directs, ran the droid fighting pen in the gambling den where we meet Lando.
    Warwick Davis, the star of "Willow", formerly Wicket the Ewok and Star Wars' lucky penny, played one of Nest's gang out of prosthetics.
    As a fan of Favreau, you've got a lot to look forward to! Jon Favreau, who voiced the Ardennian Rio Durant, is the showrunner of "The Mandalorian" and basically runs Lucasfilm with animation head Dave Filoni. You may know him as the director of "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2" as well as for playing Harold "Happy" Hogan in the MCU.
    Those golden dice were the focus of the last shot. Keep them in mind for later on.

    Yeah.
    It's one of those 4th wall things.
    The showing off isn't for Qi-Ra, it's for the audience watching the movie.
    Just in case we all forgot Darth Maul in Phantom Menace 19 years earlier, they show his face and then his famous lightsaber to remind us.
    And for those of us who do remember, we all have to wonder how he survived being sliced in half AND falling into a ginormous pit.
    And for those of us who do remember and know a little Star Wars lore, we know he has a brother, Savage Opress, who looks just like him and also uses a double lightsaber.
    I thought this was Savage Opress until I saw the credits.
    And for those of us with a ton of Star Wars lore (including me after I googled it), we know how he survived being sliced in half AND falling into a ginormous pit.

    I think a lot of people misinterpret the ending with Quira. Its not that she wanted to take over, she's doing it to protect Han. She knows that if Crimson Dawn were to investigate what happened themselves, that Han and herself would be on the run forever. Just like at the beginning of the movie, when she tells Han to run, she chooses to stay behind to give Han the chance to escape and be free. She knows how to survive in the world of Crimson Dawn, she already feels like she's done too much to escape that world, so she makes the choice to stay behind and let Han go.

    I find the most endearing quality to this film is that it isn't a galactic-scale threat being dealt with. It's a more ground-level story about a train heist and a bank robbery, which taps into the Western influence in Star Wars nicely. Also probably the closest analogous, on-screen experience to reading a one-shot Star Wars novel.
    But it's one of those situations where it is probably much more effective when viewed for the first time in chronological order. Because, when viewed in release order, there's a much heavier sense of "seeing backstory things you already know happening" that removes some of the suspense.

    It's always enjoyable watching you react to these movies and sharing your passion and insightful comments. I agree with you that "Solo" didn't really hit the mark compared to the other Star Wars movies. I can't really explain exactly what it was that didn't feel right about this. It just kind of seemed to me that it was largely "fan service", dealing with these events from Han's past (ie, how he and Chewie met, how he won the Falcon from Lando, the Kessel run, etc.), as if they just loosely tied them together with this story, which felt rather weak and forced to me.
    The character of Han somehow seemed "off" and didn't really match the OT Han I loved so much in the previous films. I've tried to accept that this is a younger version of Han but it almost felt like a caricature. Kind of like someone pretending to be Han, saying his iconic lines without actually being him. Like I said, hard to explain.

    Joke‘s on you, because the film made a similar Solo pun as you did in the beginning.
    Overall, I have a similar feeling about the movie. It‘s not as bad as some people see it, but it‘s also not exceptionally good.
    It might be interesting what the movie would have been like if Lord and Miller wouldn‘t have been fired as the directors. But apparently the screenwriters and Kathleen Kennedy weren‘t happy with their interpretation, so they were replaced by Ron Howard.
    I think Qira is leaving in the end to protect Han, because otherwise Maul might come after him.
    Crimson Dawn was also new to me (as are the Pykes on Kessel). Apart from the Hut cartel, the biggest criminal organization in the old Expanded Universe was Black Sun.
    Talking of Kessel, the Kessel Run was retconned several times (mostly as a lot of black holes around the planet), because George Lucas screwed up in Episode IV. He probably thought that parsec was a measurement of speed, when it is actually a measurement of distance. So other authors try to explain why the shorter distance is so important here. The most common explanation is that you can cut the distance shorter by having to fly closer to a black hole, where you can only escape the gravitational pull if the ship is fast enough.
    Not sure if that makes astrophysical sense, but that‘s what they came up with to explain the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs line.
    Fun facts:
    The helmet that Backett is wearing on Kessel is the same one that Lando wears in Jabba‘s palace in Episode VI.
    Thandie Newton (Val) is the mother of Nico Parker, who plays Joel‘s daughter in The Last of Us.
    The second „w“ in Warwick Davis‘s name is actually silent (it sounds more like Warrick).
    I believe Chewie had bodyguards, because everyone wanted to hug him, which took its toll on the fur.

  • @quoniam426
    @quoniam426 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wookies can live up to 400. Chewie is barely out of his prime.
    Story takes place or at least ends about 10 years before Ep4. The Star Wars Rebels CGI series is set between the two and lasts four years.
    If you want to see the return of Maul, watch The Clone Wars, all is explained there.

They planned sequel stories to this movie but after the under performance Disney re-evaluated there strategy. This movie came out 6 months after ‘The last Jedi’ (episode 8 in the sequel trilogy), which was quite divisive, plus people just found it hard acquainting the new actor with Han Solo. The reason you feel like it wasn't part of the saga is that it wasn't - and it wasn't supposed to be. The Skywalker Saga is episodes 1-9 and it is over/finished. Rogue One fits into the overall arc of the Skywalker Saga because it makes certain things possible (death star plans etc). But Solo is the only movie so far that is meant to branch out from that arc and be its own story. As such, it's best to just enjoy it like a heist movie in the SW universe. All SW from now on will be something new and different like Solo was. Mandalorian is great but it too is not part of the Skywalker saga. @@thegorn68 The big problem was Disney+ was only being developed at the time this film was made, and the idea of Star Wars live action as a TV series wasn't proven until the success of The Mandalorian. It was the box-office failure of this movie that caused the planned Obi-Wan Star Wars Story movie to be re-developed as the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. I agree, this would have been much better developed as a series (and some of the plot points may still be addressed if they make the Lando series that was announced last year). The big problem is no one in charge of the studios is willing to take risks. Andor was planned as a 5-season series with each season encompassing a year in the Star Wars universe leading into Rogue-One. The Suits were not willing to take the risk and allow a full five-year series which is what is causing Andor season 2 to encompass four years of the timeline, which I feel is going make things feel rushed - again, exactly what they did with Solo.

    Solo isn't great.... isn't horrible..... it just kind of is. I enjoyed it but understand everyone's criticisms. The switching of directors mid film and the ensuing bad press made it hard for me to get excited for it and made this the first Star Wars film since The Empire Strikes Back that I didn't see in theaters, I was 3 years old for ESB, but after seeing I wished that I had. Great reaction as always!!!!!

      It's not a horrible movie, just not as epic or interesting as the other Star Wars movies for me. The fact that it had production issues really doesn't help either. Seeing Star Wars movies in theatres just seems like such an epic event!

    Vero, in the 1980s there was a rumor that Boba Fett was a woman, and that would explain why they cared whether or not Han died in the freezing process, a regular bounty hunter wouldn't give 2 shits if Han died. so when they showed Qira flying away with Dryden's ship, in the office was a set of Mandalorian armor, which is what Boba Fett wears, so i thought they were going to have it be Qira be Boba Fett and that would make him a female like that rumor.

    Han Solo gets the same treatment that Emperor Palpatine does. "Here's this awesome characters backstory! JK, they've always been like this!"
    I think you'll find that Disney is generally really bad at character development.

    • @VerowakReacts
      @VerowakReacts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they didn't make Han similar to how he was in the movies, then people would have complained that the actor or directors didn't do a good job channeling Han in the character. I feel like there is no winning, sadly

    • @joshuawiedenbeck6944
      @joshuawiedenbeck6944 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Verowak Reacts Yeah, my only gripe is that he's exactly like the original Han. So Disney didn't bother to try any character development at all. I was much different as a 20 year old than I was as a 30 year old. Oh well.

    jfc... I'm grinning and clapping like an idiot in my chair because I saw this get posted. XD
    It's actually a good movie though, I do think it would've been better without... Han in it? I admit I'm biased. The Han Solo origin trilogy in the old Legends novels is written by one of my favorite writers and absolute heroes, who means a lot to me. She died about ten years ago now, way too young. So I have a hard time judging this fairly where Han is concerned. But the movie and characters surrounding him I think are honestly amazing.

      @@VerowakReacts If I recall correctly, Solo takes place like 10 years before Ep. IV (around the same time-frame the Obi-Wan Kenobi show takes place in, btw) so Han is only in his 20s in it. A direct connection to Ep. IV ala Rogue One isn't possible in this movie.

    "There's always a train heist."
    Wait, what?
    What "always"?
    Always in Star Wars? I can only think of this one. Well, there's sort of one in Book of Boba but I'm not sure that's really a train.
    Always in movies? In general, I bet it's less than 1%. In fact, I'm struggling to think of more than a few in movies that are not about the Wild West.
    Always in western-genre movies? Now we're talking. Among westerns, train heists are very common.
