The excuse I use for the chase, is Leia unconsciously tapping into the Force to make the right choices to dodge. But yeah that was wierd. I like the young actress playing her though. She's adorable and delivers the spunkiness of Leia well.
I wish there would be a short teenage series with Leia. There is a particular story from the comics that would work well. An assassin tries to kill her, and her father decided to have her to start defense and blaster training. There is a great story around that basic arc.

@@VerowakReacts We finally got to see the comic, cinematic, animated and live action of the first 10 Inquisitors from Grand Inquisitor to 10 Brother. In addition, we still have 4-6 unnamed and secret inquisitors that we know quite a bit about, like the one Darth Maul killed on Dathomir and created his new lightsaber from the Solo Star wars story and Rebels. ;)

@@VerowakReacts Yeah I think there are two types of fans. The people who saw the originals and nothing ever compares for them and they go into everything new with a negative view from the start, they look for everything they possibly can to nitpick about it to death (even though you can also do this with the very silly original trilogy too) and let those things ruin their good time.
Then there's fans who like Star Wars (I know, how weird) who don't let the silly bits outweigh the good bits.
This is coming from someone who was a fan of the originals back when I was a kid in the 80's. I'm forever glad for more Star Wars. If I'm not into one thing as much, I'll be into the next thing more.

I fell in love with Obi-Wan (Ewan) and SW when I was 13 when The Phantom Menace came out. This show was nowhere near as good as it could have been imo, but I still enjoy many aspects of it....especially Hayden and Ewan. Baby Leia is beyond precious (and played by an awesome actress). I know how you feel about people who aren’t trained to use the Force using lightsabers, but to give you some history about the inquisitors. They are former Jedi who survived order 66, and then captured by the Empire and turned to the dark side. They work directly for Darth Vader to hunt down and kill surviving Jedi. They were first introduced to us in the Star Wars Rebels series so if you ever make it to that series, very good to watch. Some of those characters are going to be in the new Ahsoka series coming up in August.

  • @tofersiefken

I think that if they wanted to make the chase scene seem more realistic when Leia was evading the three adults, they might have wanted to capitalize on both her small size and intimate knowledge of the woods. Instead of running down a path where an adult could easily overtake her, why not have Leia dive into the hollow among the roots under a large tree, while the bad guys are looking in the hole, she shimmies up through the inside of the hollow tree to emerge among the branches high above the pursuers then stealthily jumps from branch to neighboring branch only to disappear in another tree. There would easily be small openings among rocks, roots, etc. that a 9 year old could squeeze through but and adult would have to find a way around.
This scene is commonly criticized by a lot of reactors I've viewed. I agree that it could have been better executed, but I never really let the detail take me out of the story. All I needed to know is that Leia tried to escape, gave it a noble effort, but was outnumbered by adults who eventually captured her unharmed. (They didn't have to tackle her or take her to the ground forcefully causing injury.)

    • @enidrobertson4858
      @enidrobertson4858 ปีที่แล้ว +2

100%. I've said it before, I think of Star Wars as an old story that's been retold countless times and details can become diluted. Like in legends and fairy tales, it's the message and the story that matter - not the "Yeah, right!" moments. Star Wars is a fairy tale; the first thing we ever saw on the screen was essentially a blue text version of "Once upon a time, in a faraway land."

  • @michaelhoward142
    @michaelhoward142 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That "chase" scene was flat-out stupid. The kidnappers all seemed to be tripping over their own feet. The one guy running into a horizontal branch that was in plain sight? Were they made to look incompetent so we'd think Leia had a chance to escape? But if they were bungling fools, why were they hired/sent? *Sigh*. That scene was just embarassing. The quickest way to make your villains not scary is to make them idiots.

Hey, Veronique! Very solid first episode.
It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the animated material first in order to get the full impact of the live-action shows which all have their roots in the Filoniverse. The Inquisitors, for example, are from "Rebels".
I was glad to see that along with McGregor, JOEL EDGERTON and JIMMY SMITS reprised their roles of Owen Lars and Bail Organa, respectively.
Very surprised and delighted to get a glimpse of ALDERAAN before its destruction!
We meet BREHA ORGANA, the mother Leia remembers as beautiful but sad in "Return of the Jedi".
Lovely tender moment between Bail and LEIA.
The creature Obi-Wan is hacking up is a NEEBRAY. They're not native to Tatooine but are space-dwelling leviathans like those who spawned in the nebula seen in the "Clone Wars" episode, "Shadow of Malevolence". Apparently this one died or was killed near Tatooine's gravity well and got pulled to the surface. The tough hide that resists vacuum and the absolute zero temperature of space have preserved the meat for harvesting enabling some enterprising interest to set up an impromptu slaughterhouse. The claim was probably made by Jabba since he's the Hutt in control of Tatooine and the venture seems to be lucrative for the owner.
Cool foreshadowing flashback to Order 66!
The toy that TEEKA the Jawa sold to Obi-Wan and which Owen rejected is the same one LUKE plays with in "A New Hope" while he's cleaning the newly-bought droids. Therefore, it will have to get into his hands eventually.
The GRAND INQUISITOR is played by RUPERT FRIEND who portrayed Peter Quinn on "Homeland"!
The FIFTH BROTHER is played by SUNG KANG who portrayed Han in the "Fast and Furious" films!
The kidnapper is played by FLEA who portrayed Needles in the "Back to the Future" films and is the bass guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers!
C-3PO's cameo was portrayed, naturally, by ANTHONY DANIELS as always!
The series is directed by "Mandalorian" director DEBORAH CHOW.
Despite EWAN MCGREGOR's best efforts and a promising start, this show fails in multiple ways and was a major disappointment.
I implore you to steep yourself into the Filoniverse by watching "Clone Wars", "Tales of the Jedi", "The Bad Batch" and "Rebels" as all live-action Star Wars content is derived from it.

Verowak, I think you're going to enjoy this series. It starts off kinda slow, but it shows the level of PTSD that Obi-Wan has over losing his Padawan, best friend, the order he served all his life, and pretty much everything that meant anything to him. He has essentially cut himself off from The Force in an effort to remain in hiding.
No spoilers.... but know that this series does a really good job of bridging the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, as far as Obi-Wan's character goes. Except for the flashbacks, this is the mid-way point between those two movies.
1:25 - If you haven't watched the animated shows, you should. They contain a lot of characters and lore that you're missing out on. These characters are (collectively) called Inquisitors. They were trained in the Dark Side by Darth Vader, with the specific purpose of hunting down any surviving Jedi from Order 66.
6:50 - The girl they got to play young Leia did an amazing job in the role. She's got the perfect level of feistiness and is adorable as all get out. I think Carrie Fisher would have not only approved, but been proud of her performance.
7:40 - No. When Kenobi left Anakin/Vader on Mustafar, he believed there was no way he could survive what he'd been through (particularly the burning alive). What Kenobi didn't know is that the Dark Side of The Force is a pathway to many abilities, some consider to be...... unnatural.
10:53 - Yeah.... silly is about the right word for it. To be fair, though, they DO want to catch her without harming her.... but the main criticism is that "most blasters have a Stun setting"...
12:48 - L0LA is an homage to the movie "***Batteries Not Included", which if you haven't seen, I recommend it. It literally links the Star Wars universe to ours, though. The funny thing is that without Star Wars becoming a huge hit back in 1977, ***Batteries Not Included would likely never have been made.
13:10 -You might be wondering how, in the middle of a desert with no markers of any kind, Obi-Wan could find his lightsaber so easily.... he is spiritually linked to the Kyber Crystal contained within it. He can sense where it is.
15:40 - I'll only confirm that the Inquisitors are indeed Force users. Again, you'd know this already if you watched the animated shows. This is their first "Live Action" appearances, but not their first appearances overall. I will say that the Clone Wars animated series is a bit daunting to get through, as it's 7 seasons long.... The Bad Batch is currently 2 seasons long, with season 3 just having been confirmed to be in production at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend, and Rebels is 4 seasons long total. Clone Wars obviously takes place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith (except for the final 4 episodes, which take place DURING Revenge of the Sith), The Bad Batch picks up at the end of Clone Wars. Rebels takes place starting 4 years before Rogue One/A New Hope. The live action Andor series takes place 5 years before Rogue One/A New Hope, but season 2 will cover the 4 years between season 1 and Rogue One.
15:55 - Clone Troopers were phased out after the rise of the Empire, and replaced by Stormtroopers.
17:25 - Aside from that "chase scene" you mentioned, yeah, I loved this series! It can seem to move a bit "slow" at times, but there are reasons for that. The same can be said for the Andor series, but I actually like "long term storytelling", as you just KNOW there are boatload of small details to look for, and all of them hint at something bigger. I'll also say that you should end up re-watching the Original Trilogy, but wait until you've "caught up to it" in the timeline. Watch everything leading up to it, and you will notice the small details and references when you see them again. Trust me on this, young Padawan.

For some of the less than believable stuff regarding Leia, such as outrunning adults - I looked at as her having innate force abilities that she didn't realize or understand were there. Almost like the Force manifesting as "bad luck" to those who were chasing her, kind of a field of protection to some extent. Just my take on suspending disbelief in this case. It's a decent series, overall, so I'm glad to see you're reacting to it.

I think when the viewer has to explain and rationalize it, the director has failed. I'm willing to put this down to bad directing and editing and move on. Fortunately, this is the only badly conceived scene in the series as I recall.

About the chase...well...kids can be very nimble and hard to catch as they dart left/right, an adult can run faster but not as nimble at turning as a determined child! Having said that, there was certainly some skewed editing with the chase but don't underestimate a child's ability to out-manoeuvre! But wow, what a cute talented little actress! I had come across her once before in a remarkable live action video game called "Telling Lies", (if any of you have PS plus extra subscription, it's included and I highly recommend it!), she is much younger, equally adorable and so talented even then. I believe Inquisitors were first mentioned in Galaxy Guide 9 (1993) for the Star Wars RPG by West End Games.
Since Timothy Zahn was tasked to check some of their background information for Lucasfilm, a lot of West End Games creations later turned up in novels. But the Inquisitors did not, unless I‘m mistaken.
In the current canon they were first seen in the Rebels series.
According to that lore, they are mostly former padawans, who were tortured long enough to become they exact opposite of what they were supposed to be.
I think the Grand Inquisitor was a former Temple Guard.
You don‘t really want to send Stormtroopers to hunt down Jedi.
Yeah, that chase scene is laughable and your reaction is warranted.
But Vivian Lyra Blair is great as the young Leia.
I believe on the Kenobi panel during Star Wars Celebration Ewan McGregor put it like this: She managed to inhabit Leia‘s qualities without trying to copy Carrie Fisher.
She gives a similar standout performance here as Bella Ramsey did on Game of Thrones.

Clone troopers or storm troopers are different. Just soldiers--no force ability.
There is a term used in other Star Wars lore that is "Dark Jedi". This is what all the Inquisitors are. They have Force ability and were corrupted to the Dark Side and working for Darth Vader and The Emperor. So yes, they will all have light sabers.

Speaking generally, this show is great for all the big plot points it hits. It just misses in how it *tells* some of those plot points, like the chase scene. There are other moments, too... but overall I absolutely love the story arc it tells for Obi-Wan.
As for the chase scene, I have a feeling that they wanted to hint at Leia's actions being guided by the Force helping her evade being caught right away. They just showed it poorly by making the chasers incompetent and not really hiding it from the viewers. Personally, I think more "quick cuts" of her darting through small openings or under hands would've worked. Not enough cuts, basically. Like the branch she went under, the person chasing her could've just ducked under, but if they had cut at the right time it would've helped sell the illusion better. Or the person tripping jumping over the fallen tree/log. It was such a long shot that we saw it coming a mile away with how the actor prepared to fall.
But I look forward to your reaction to the rest of the episodes. There are some moments, alone, that make up for the cheesiness in some of the writing. So, like the Force, this show exists in a balance. :P

I'm not a particularly big Star Wars fan, and I don't really have much opinion on Ewan MacGregor as Obi-Wan. I say that because, by the end of the season, I was _hooked._ I wanted more, and thoroughly disliked the fact that there was no more. With your being much more invested than I in both Star Wars in general and MacGregor as Obi-Wan specifically, I really do think you'll absolutely love the series. 🙂
Also, I completely agree that the chase in this episode wasn't great. It could have been, though. In and of itself, I don't find a child escaping adults particularly unbelievable on its face. Children are quick, unpredictable, and their size makes grabbing them more difficult. Leia, specifically, was shown to be audacious enough to run like hell and do so intelligently, so I certainly wouldn't have thought anything of her escaping.
The scene itself--yeah, it was far from good, especially when you had her stopped, staring up at an adult who was staring back at her--then she escapes again. If she was constantly moving, using her small stature to weave through trees and bushes in ways the pursuers couldn't, using a child's infinite and boundless energy to keep moving, to not give her pursuers the chance to get close to her--I could have bought it. I mean, I'm not a Hollywood script writer. I'm not a team of writers. I'm not whoever approves scripts. Even so, I just came up with a way that would have made it work better, so one has to wonder why we got what we got.

In the TV shows and now in some of the movies going forward you are going to get hit with a bunch of characters and lore that you are not ready for and they honestly don't explain so people have to look it up or be told by someone. The Inquisitors are a big part of the animation, games and books. One thing that always bothered me was how many force sensitives popped up without being mentioned in any of the movies. In my youth I read a bunch of novels and comics for Star Wars so I was ready for them but for new people they have no clue about what is in the Galaxy of Star Wars. There is a huge story behind how The Emperor used the Inquisitors to hunt down the Jedi and to challenge Vader. You will have to pick up these things when you see them in whatever you want to watch. Just remember there is much more to the galaxy than has been explained in what you have seen.

Filoni has been a fan of the novels and games that were part of LucasArts and other Lucas Entertainment properties. Like that scene where Finn uses a lightsaber to fight stormtroopers. He kills one, then basically loses to the second one. That seems reasonable.
But not like when Finn uses a lightsaber to stand his ground against Kylo Ren, even for only a handful of seconds. That seems unreasonable.
Fortunately, i've never seen anybody use one to block blaster bolts except Force users, so they didn't cross that line in anything I can recall.
As for these inquisitors, they've had the training they need so there's no worries on that front.

So far, I'm really hyped up for it!! Obi-Wan is my main reason for this show, but Leia has been splendid!
