Fun fact: the porgs (cute bird things on Luke’s planet) were created because the location in Ireland where they filmed those scenes had puffins everywhere. They would be in the background of all the shots, and it was easier to digitally cover them up with porgs than it was to digitally remove them altogether.

Hyperspace IS a pocket dimension, travelling at lightspeed isn't. The Holdo Maneuver works because there's a brief period of time between entering Hyperspace and accelerating into Hyperspace where you're literally the fastest object in the entire universe.
It's honestly surprising that Star Wars writers barely explored that idea outside of Clone Wars and Last Jedi, because it's a really interesting exploration on the economy and logistics of Star Wars.

The movie was just bad. The Mary Poppins scene of Leia, the whole plot with Finn and Rose. Rose as a character and Holdo as a character. There is no threat at all after the movie. General Hux is reduced to a joke, Snoke is dead and Kylo isn't either.
Why doesn't Holdo tell us what the plan is? All the decisions made there were completely pointless, both by Resistance and the First Order.
The car chase is inconclusive and boring. The throne room scene is poorly choreographed, and that's even a fact. A German TH-camr has dissected the scene once, since then I pay attention to it and it's funny how often they hit the void, make senseless turns so that it looks "cool". And more. If you compare this with others, then you see it, alone , that you take a defensive position as a saber first happens only once briefly by Kylo and that only briefly. Rey treats her light saber like a baseball bat. And from the blue milk I do not even want to start. They spent a lot of money on this and saved on the choreographer. Rey is a Mary Sue. Finn is also just degraded to a coward and Poe makes mother jokes, infantile humor.
In addition, Rian Johnson's manner is highly questionable humanly. Especially since he likes to make claims that are not true at all, like Empire strikes back would be "roasted" at the time. Which is simply a lie.
He also likes to contradict himself.

For the most part I really liked The Last Jedi. It felt like it was the first SW in a while not treading the same waters the other episodes have. It felt fresh. It got me thinking. It didn't feel like I've seen it before. It was brave to introduce some controversial ideas. Arguably, not all of them landed, but it still is way better than 'the fandom' makes it out to be. Rian Johnson really did not deserve the hate he got for this.

Meaning there is no way they'll be happy 😂 there were some good ideas and some not so great but it's enjoyable for sure and doesn't deserve the amount of hate it gets, at all.

as a huge Star Wars fan I have to say Star Wars fans are pretty insufferable at times. They decided that the prequels were so bad that many of them said he shouldn't be in control anymore. That happened and now the prequels are great and these are so awful they can't be cannon, and I've heard so many people that actually think they'll retcon them in the future.

Hi ! I enjoyed watching your Star Wars journey... The Last Jedi is MY FAVORITE Star Wars movie almost tied with The Empire Strikes Back. I hate Episode 9 the Rise Of Skywalker. Only watched it once. I don't recognize it at all. Kylo's end was so depressing for many fans

  • @2starkiller
    @2starkiller ปีที่แล้ว +10

Kylo Ren hints at the intense power required to actually project yourself over a distance, like Luke does in the end, when he first discovers the connection to Rey. "You're not doing this, the effort would kill you. No this is something different" or something along those lines. So he knows such power exists but the connection between him and Rey is something else that turned out to be Snoke's doing, but he lets his rage blind him from Luke's actions and motivations in the end. The movie has a lot of these sorts of tiny details that make it better on subsequent viewings.
This is my favourite movie in the sequel trilogy. It has some amazing shots, the story is interesting for the most part although pacing hurts it a bit. Humour reminds me of the original trilogy and character development and emotions are great. The casino planet should probably have been cut further down to fix most of the pacing issues and maybe another action sequence should have taken place either in space or on the first order flagship.

I get not enjoying movies or characters but holy crap don't take it out on the actors ffs. Rose was great as a character, the actress did great! Same with young Anakin in episode 1, and even if I didn't like the Jar Jar character, I think the actor did a great job bringing the character to life. Amazing. Every word you just said was right.
Just kidding, but I really agree with everything you said.
TLJ's strongest aspect is the cinematography. Even George Lucas said it was "beatifully made". Even though this is my favorite sequel movie, and probably top 3 overall, the comedy definitely is hit or miss. Even years later, Hux and Poe's interaction still feels out of place. But I enjoyed all the little moments with the porgs, the island's caretakers having a difficult time with Rey, and silly shots like with the iron "ship".
Narratively speaking, this movie operates in a whole different layer compared to most Star Wars movies, and maybe that's why many dislike what they watched; masters usually don't go through a character arc, they tend to be perfect already. That's also a theme of the movie, the importance of learning from failure. Luke, at the end, once again became what it was promised in episode IV: he became a new hope. For some reason most (if not every) TLJ haters can't properly identify Luke's arc and conclude he was bitter and useless the entire movie.
I guess you see what I mean: Luke's impact in the galaxy is not verbally referenced, it's only a visual thing with the reborn of the resistance, the kids at the end sharing a tale, the symbol of the resistance in the kid's ring, and so on. It's not an spectacle so that might've pissed off some.
I love the shots when Luke goes inside the Millenium Falcon with all the little lights shining. It feels haunting, but it's like a symbolic reunion with Han. We also see an hologram of Leia. It's literally a story of ghosts, or how the past haunts all of us.
I'm happy that Holdo and Leia's relationship moved you, I loved it as well. There's something so pure about it!
Also, I'm glad you could easily identify what was Poe's arc about. You nailed it, it was about leadership and caring for the group as a whole, not just being a lonely hero. Leia had to teach him that before she could fully rely on him as a leader, and we see that at the end in Crait when everyone's waiting for Leia's orders but then she finally passed the responsibility of leadership to Poe.
This same generational change happens with Luke and Rey in a more obvious way, but I still think it's very moving. There's something so respectful about this movie that I could never take out of my mind.
Anyway, I'm happy you enjoyed! I'd be equally excited if you didn't like most of the movie. I was curious to see your response to it.

There were some good moments in this movie. Luke reuniting with R2 on the Falcon. The Rey & Kylo Ren vs. Snoke's guards lightsaber fight. And Luke and Leia's reunion, which hits differently knowing that it was Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher's last scene together. And I loved seeing Yoda again.

Projecting yourself like Luke did will take all your might and energy to accomplish. Kylo seemed to be aware of this when he connected with Rey, and he wondered how that was happening; he thought she was projecting herself, but quickly dismissed it because he said that if she tried to do it, the effort would kill her. That was the first and only hint in the movie as to what would happen if you attempted it.
I loved the movie when it came out, but after digesting it for some days it turns to be an okay movie. One thing that I'm grateful for though, is that lightspeed crash that Hondo did. The visuals gave me a unique moment of "wow, look at that!", probably what the OG fans felt when they first saw star wars. Everyone was silent in the cinema, at max just gasping... I never felt like that before so that moment was memorable. Looking forward to your next reaction!

BB-8 says „I have a bad feeling about this.“ before Poe tells him „Happy beeps“, at least according to the director.
You might have missed that Rey took the books with her, so it didn‘t really matter if the tree burnt down or not.
When I heard Poe calling Holdo a coward for the first time, I had to laugh. Holdo was first featured in a book about the teenage Leia, in which they also discover the Crait Base. In the book Holdo is the exact opposite of a coward. But she‘s portrayed quite differently. I guess they changed her characterization quite a bit between the script and the movie.
My guess is that Lucasfilm weren‘t expecting the hype around Captain Phasma, which is why she had such a small role in the first movie.
They probably tried to rectify that by publishing a book about her backstory, which also explains that her armor is made from the hull plates of a Nubian starship, i.e., the ones used by the Queen of Naboo.
After reading that book, I assumed she would have a bigger role in this movie. Apparently not…
I‘d also be curious if Kasdan (i.e. the screenwriter of Episode VII) had some idea how to continue Snoke‘s role. If he had, then this movie threw it a black hole.
Overall not the worst movie, but it has quite some issues. Especially the whole Canto Bight sequence is too long, and it was even longer in the first cut.
Transforming the Nazi-like Hux into the joke of an imperial officer probably wasn‘t the best choice either.
And the mutiny could have been avoided if Holdo had shared her plans.

After the very 1st SW movie, it was explained that it was impossible for ships to destroy other ones by jumping via hyper space. Star Wars as a concept, cannot exist if it was possible. But the Director ignored it because he saw some cool concept art. And now is back to be impossible.
Why neither Yoda, nor Obi Wan, or you know, the person Kylo Ren idolized ever appeared to him, and explained him about the Dark side? Why Luke never received advice from them, or was ever warned about Palpatine/Snoke? Why Luke trusted Force Vision of what Kylo would become, when his original arc was about him proving to everyone that destiny (and thus people) could change, and that Visions were not reliable? The first trilogy is about how the Jedi Order were in the wrong, but now Rey will recreate it? Why was Yoda having the gall to show off his powers and laugh about Luke, but never did anything to help, at all? Where is Anakin..you know, the Chosen one? Rose almost killed Finn, to avoid him sacrificing himself and saving everyone else. Thus almost condemning the Resistance - just for an unwanted kiss. We learned from Holdo that experienced team leaders should blindly follow orders, in hopes their betters have a full proofed plan. And that mutiny is ok, as long as you are hot.
We can go on. Best movie ever.

Surviving the exposure of space has been done in other stories before, and in a way that makes sense. Though a lot of people hated on the moment in the movie. Honestly, I feel like anyone that has a problem with some of the Force powers just doesn't have the imagination/creativity to take full advantage of the possibilities. Basically someone trained in the Force uses the Force to maintain a pressurized bubble of atmosphere around them. And then just like how they can push/pull objects or jump high and run fast, she just used the Force to pull herself towards the ship.
I read your response to another comment about it, and I can see your point about the effect looking "off". And yeah, it's mostly a holdover from the old Extended Universe where she did start training with Luke but her station in the Rebellion put her in high demand in reshaping the New Republic government and she left her training incomplete in order to serve the people in another way, leadership. But the training did happen.

I would have far rather gotten a Rian Johnson movie that was all on his own terms. That would have been much better. But Disney got scared and tried to keep doing fan service things, and overly kiddie things, and then…well. Let’s just say the next movie was entirely a corporate reaction to the fans outrage about this movie. They rewrote everything they were planning on and changed directors to (in their minds) salvage it.

It's sad how few people understood this film. So many SW fans live in a bubble where they're married to concepts presented in books they read when they were 12, and they're scared of nuance and taking a 40 year old franchise to new places. That's the problem with people's relationship to this series; there's limited mobility beyond laser swords and 8th grade understanding of mythology.
This film is the first time I actually understood characters on a more than base, archetypal level. Luke actually had an arc that wasn't sandwhiched between films. He felt like a real person and not an insert. This was the first time in film we actually saw how the world functioned beyond the war divide and touched on the finer points of intergalactic conflict. We weren't limited to dignitaries sitting around tables and resistance fighters arguing, we saw how people lived and funded the war. Above all, it pays off all the themes and points of intrigue planted over 40 years. Luke has serious abilities and uses them purely for defense, Ala the Jedi creed spoken of since Yoda mentioned in ESB.
There's a literal balance being formed between very opposing views via Rey and Kylo. We see Leia actually has harnessed some force abilities over the decades. Warfare in space can still be more than vroom vroom space lasers. The themes of failure and the potential inside everyone who isn't a Skywalker are beautiful. That final shot, as well as many visual choices, are chef's kiss.
But all people see is Luke milking the cow creature, and Snoke wasn't some big bad again...therefore it lacks filmic technique or some other bs.

This is my second favorite SW film. Rian followed George’s footsteps and led himself be led by myths and legends. He was inspired by the later Arthurian legends and Beowulf, in which the young hero becomes the jaded outcast but sees the light and answers the call for Justice. Which is double layered because us as fans build this legend around Luke and we made him into this infallible god that can do no wrong. That same legend crushed Luke, he thought he could never live up to it.
Rey teaches him that being a symbol for the Galaxy inspires others to rise against evil and we see that in the end with the broom boy. That little boy represents every fan growing up seeing the story of Luke and how everyone can be part of the story. You don’t need to be from some special bloodline or order to be important.
As for the main characters Finn finally learned to care for something bigger than himself and Rey. He goes to the other extreme but Rose teaches him that protecting what we love is more important. Poe learns that being a leader is far more important than being a hero. A leader understands what’s at stake and considers every possibility without at the expense of his followers. And Rey learns that she’s special in her own right. She makes her own purpose, and finds her place in this greater plot. The Legend of Luke is not enough to save the Galaxy, she needs to step up and do her part.
And to my favorite part of all: Yoda and Luke. The quintessential Star Wars scene of all. Learn from all, the good and bad. Learn from it and forge a better future for all. That’s the path for betterment and understanding.

You are smart. That's how Kylo "knows" Rey and both make a quick connection. Rey knew how to do mind tricks and use the Force.
Han doesn't trust anyone, but he feels he knows Rey cause she is his son other half. Rey is just "remembering" (Kylo's moves on Crait are the same that Rey do at the island). The connection between the dyad is so interesting, cause they are one self and there is no space between them. Also the mirror shows Rey a man and a woman combined (Ben and Rey). To so closely mirror that and go in the opposite direction makes it feel less like someone didn’t understand Luke Skywalker when writing him, and more like they wanted to do something contradictory on purpose.

That would make sense if this took place right after RotJ, but this is thirty years after the fact, which allows ample time for Luke to change and grow/regress over time. People are hardly the same as they were 3 decades prior.

Luke does not in any way regret saving his father, but has many regrets in his life as a Jedi, most especially his actions with Ben.

That being said, I struggle to re-watch them unlike the original and pre-quels. IDK why! I think they were just trying to do WAY TOO MUCH and make everyone and everything have MeANinG and LaYerS in a way the others didn't. I'm just going to be honest, I hate this movie. There's a good movie in here, but this isn't it. I truly think Rian Johnson just hated Star Wars fans. We spent 2 years asking so many questions, and Johnson decided to kill every storyline. Who's Snoke? He's dead, not answering that question? Captain Phasma is cool. Kill her, no storyline? What's Luke going to do with the lightsaber? Screw it, he tosses it over his shoulder. Who are Rey's parents? Screw it, they're nobody. He was more worried about doing pointless mirror shots, and forgot to tell a cohesive story.

I hated this movie when I first saw it but now that the dust has settled and we have the full trilogy I think it's the best of the 3 films. I feel like most the story issues are traced back to the force awakens which was a sloppy rehash of a new hope. I don't like hermit Luke but what the hell was Johnson supposed to do with his character? Abrams already set him up as abandoning his friends and family. Rey never had to be anybody, in my opinion she should be a nobody to serve as a foil to Ben Solo/Skywalker. This movie had a lot of issues and it's still just the best of the worst imo but at least Johnson tried to push the story forward and introduce interesting concepts that were never expanded upon. Abrams seemed to mostly focused on a soft reboot of the OT.

    • @jkhoover
      @jkhoover ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@psionoblast5379 I just vehemently disagree. Abrams created a lot of questions, and I was excited for this movie because I wanted to see what happened. NO SPOILERS I wasn't that hip to the direction Rian Johnson took things in this one. There were a lot of things in it that I thought were fun, and that a younger audience might be more into, as opposed to an old fuddy daddy like myself, but it wasn't the direction I would've gone with for the overall story line. Not that anyone was asking me, but I felt like after the prequels, JJ Abrams made an attempt with The Force Awakens to bring the look and feel back to be more akin to the originals, and then this just sort of abandoned that to go off track again. My biggest pet peeve was that after the set up of Snoke in The Force Awakens, his back story, or really much else was really revealed about him, and he was just kind of an inconsequential and superficial stand in as the new bad guy that didn't even end up being around very long. Turns out more of him will be revealed in the extended universe, but now I'm not sure how much I care.
On maybe a more positive note, Rian Johnson's stuff in general has been kind of hit and miss for me. Some I think is really good, others kind of iffie. You should definitely check out his first movie "Brick" though! That one I love.
