two things to keep in mind about the end duels with Kylo Ren:
First, he got shot in the gut by chewie's bowcaster, the weapon the movie went to great pains to set up as being very powerful. The only reason Kylo Ren even survived being shot by it is that he's keeping himself alive with the dark side, but he's still slowly bleeding to death. He's not exactly in top form.
Second, he's not trying to kill Rey, he's trying to turn her and capture her. He's trying to get her fearful and angry to make her susceptible to the draw of the dark side of the force.

Remember when Ben/Kylo was having a hard time sword fighting Fin and Ray, he had been shot in the liver by Chewie's bowcaster which is a powerful weapon that usually knocks bodies flying.
So he did have a bit of a disadvantage.
Also they are hinting that Fin is force sensitive. From Kylo feeling him in the opening scene to his gunnery skills, and Maz giving him the light saber.

    • @thegorn68

Also, Rey shows earlier in the film that she's pretty handy at fighting with her staff so other than the lightsaber being a smaller weapon, it's still a hand-to hand (blocking and swinging) weapon.

It’s never brought up in any of the movies, but not only is Rey strong with the Force, she has a rare Force power called Psychometry. It lets the user read the past of an object they touch. She did it with the Millennium Falcon to familiarize herself with its inner workings and how its previous users had handled it. She used it again to see a vision of Luke’s lightsaber’s past, but mixed in with visions of the future. She also used it when she muttered, “The Force…” while fighting Kylo Ben. If you go back to previous movies and compare fight scenes, you can see that she doesn’t just get a power up; she starts fighting like Anakin, the lightsaber’s previous and most prominent wielder. She naturally read its past and mimicked the way it had been wielded before. It’s a case of “show, don’t tell”, where I think I would have appreciated a little more “tell”. 😅

Except in Reality she handled a lightsaber worse than literally any other character in the series ever has. I know thats the Actresses stiff movements and the poor choreography of the fight, but i always laugh out loud when i see/hear how Rey is so talented and yet see the straight up horrible lightsaber fights disney shit out. Prequal trilogy fights were epic, original trilogy fights were a mix of cool and elegant, Sequel trilogy fights are kinda cool at times but mostly disappointing.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Pfff, if that is a legit concept, i'm really glad I hate Disney's era of SW. What a crap of a tale, script and argument for a movie/novel/whatever is all that. Ray is overpowered, all previous movies means nothing just because of that excessive overpowered she is, and Disney's era is horrendoiusly bad for all the easy ideas: everything feels it's there because why not. And that should never be a thing. It never was with starwars. That Psichometry crap you are talking about, stop legitimizing silly ideas. It's nothing more than that: silly and easy. Nothing like the Midi-chlorian concept, that was a smart move by Lucas indeed.

@ It's a concept from the game Jedi: Fallen Order, it's actually really cool as a way of adding collectibles and lore. As far as I know it was never supposed to be a thing in the sequels, but it's an interesting way to retrospectively think about how Rey is as good as she is at literally everything she touches. Then again, I just try not to think about these movies at all

Final Lightsaber confrontation: You said that Kylo is good with the force but not as a swordsman. That statement is the opposite of what the film makers were trying to portray here. Yes, Kylo was injured but he was a very good swordsman. It's that he had no control with the force at that time because his emotions were in turmoil after killing his own father. You can see this by comparing him at the beginning of the movie, stopping laser bolts in mid-air, with the end, where he couldn't even move the lightsaber in the snow to his own hand. That's why Finn put up such a good fight and why Rey ultimately beat him. He only had his swordsmanship to rely on. Rey was on the ropes for most of the fight. Rey had her own combat training and experience but won because she had the force on her side and he didn't.

Is the presence of a character we feel nostalgic for, or several, supposed to make up for this being a legacy New Hope ripoff? The special effects look alright too, nothing impressive because CGI shit is kind of run-of-the-mill at this point in Hollywood history, but it looks pretty good. Still, is that supposed to make up for the bad storytelling, the incoherent plot, the lack of character development... and just wait till we get into the next couple of movies, where they actively denigrate the OT characters and also failed to so much as put them together in a scene.

Everything fans thought was wrong with Jacen Solo is actually wrong with Kylo Ren, he's a whiny try-hard, and all the good things about Jacen Solo, Kylo lacks, and even as a bad guy is a complete disgrace to the legacy of Darth Vader. I would much rather have seen Legacy of the force novels brought to life in the form of a movie trilogy. Anyone here familiar with those books? Even the dark empire comic had a better storyline than this sequel trilogy. And Disney ripped off from both, by the way, there are elements of each of those, and lots of other expanded universe stories that Disney said it was trash and that they weren't going to use, but that they then proceeded to rob from in piecemeal, more and more as time went on. Very good stories, I highly recommend some, especially to anyone who's disappointed with Disney content. The expanded universe safe throughout and declared non-canon, is better.

When you’re done with the sequels, if you’re at all into reading books, I highly recommend reading Heir to the Empire, by Timothy Zahn. It’s the “other” sequel to Return of the Jedi, the “original” sequel from 1991. If you like it, continue with its sequels, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command, and see for yourself if you’d like to continue this other line of Star Wars sequels from there. All in all, the books encompass an additional 40 years of adventures with the characters you know, and the younger characters they pass the torch to.

To be fair, The Force Awakens was a pretty good start for the new trilogy. It gets flack for being a big retelling of Episode IV, but I'm ok with that. Good intro to characters, sets up lots of strands. The sequel trilogy gets a MUCH worse reputation because of the next one - Episode VIII The Last Jedi. Get ready for a complete s*^tshow. Rian Johnson single-handedly destroyed Star Wars. Anyone could see that, even though there wasn't an "official" map for the trilogy, the path Johnson took was the FURTHEST from it that you could go. Oh, and Episode 9 is a mess BECAUSE of the mess Ep 8 left it in.
