Land Cruiser 200 Series GXL vs Nissan Patrol Ti-L: towing comparison review

  • The Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol have been long-time rivals in the war for Aussie hearts and cash - well, that was until a few years ago when the Patrol went petrol only and it has since lost a chunk of ground to the Cruiser, in terms of sales and off-road-touring credibility.
    But, despite that, these are two legendary 4WD wagons with mighty reputations as off-road tourers and towing vehicles of note and they both have hefty price-tags to match.
    In a modern market in which big load-lugging monsters such as the Ram 2500 threaten to reign supreme, are the 200 Series and Patrol still worth consideration as work and recreational towing machines? And which of the two is best for towing in terms of comfort, ride and handling and fuel use?

    For starters the specs compared arent even equal, the GXL should be tested against a Ti which can be had for around 64k on road. Secondly basing a win on preconceived reliability advantages is odd given the well documented dusting issues with 200's and people having to drop in a set of 12k injectors to avoid grenading an engine which sets you back closer to 30k.
    The economy was basically equal even though you rabbited on about how thirsty it will be before seeing the results. You can drive around 300k kilometers in a Ti before its starts to cost you the same amount as the GXL. Seems like you had already made your mind up before even turning a key. (Or pushing a start button)

      Even that is a stretch, the even cheaper Ti Patrol more closely resembles the even more expensive VX, and now actually exceeds even that with all the extra safety features the new series now has.

      It's funny what most people don't realise is the difference in cost of fuel is negated by the extra cost of the loan repayments for the 200 so on a weekly basis there is no extra cost for running a y62

      @naysunhuang 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The specs compared aren't but the price is similar. In that sense it's sort've like, for 96k you can get a base model cruiser or a top spec patrol.

      @@carsguide ok and thanks for the reply. I feel the price difference and different spec should have been clarified more in the test as in the real world of using your own money, a price difference that large on 2 vehicles that are overall very similar would see the cheaper one win on the massive financial advantage alone.

    The land cruiser relies on its old reputation. Very little difference in fuel economy now. Patrol has better technology and much better specced as it compares to the Sahara.
    You pick the winner on “reliability” based on 248 km runs, laden and unladen! What tests did you use to reach your reliability conclusion. Without any long term tests, let alone objective tests, your opinion on the winner, based on “reliability” shows your bias or ignorance in favour of the Toyota.

    So are you now going to take back all the comments re "visiting a lot more servo's, more aware of your fueling places, etc etc" that you were rabbiting on about while driving the Y62 ? barely any difference difference while towing, and the only reason you were getting 14.3/100 not towing was because you were obviously letting your "inner hoon" get the better of you, as you stated earlier. Most current Series 5 Y62 owners are reporting 10-11/100 hwy not towing. You mention the cloth seats and manual seat controls of the 200 but no mention of the leather seats and electric "memorizing" controls of the Y62, you state that in your view the 200 is still the "winner" due to "reliability" (I'm assuming that's all you had left to go with after the fuel figures didn't work for you), so you're saying the Y62 is unreliable ? If so. please inform us how ? So much for balanced, unbiased reviews from a motoring magazine, advertising $$ are still decision makers I see.

      Patrol, on objective criteria - not personal, uninformed opinion - is superior. You'll have to travel the best part of half a million kms to reach cost parity between the money you save on a marginally thirstier Patrol versus the fuel you save on a dearer LandCruiser Sahara.
      Also, there's no DPF on a Patrol, so reliability is unquestionably in favour of the Nissan.
      A 138-litre fuel tank capacity in LC smashes Patrol for long-distance touring, but rain sensing wipers, driver’s (leather) seat memory, sunroof, rear seat DVD screens and cool box are all on the cheaper Patrol Ti-L; amiss on LC.
      "Buying into the reputation" should be a concern for consumers looking for objective, critical analysis on which one to buy with their own actual money.
      It just depends on what you're actually buying it for. Driving around, through and across Australia? LandCruiser. Everything else? Patrol.

    I bought my GXL 200 series in 2010 and had to wait for it to come from Japan, I collected her with 4km on the odo. I have196K on the clock and it’s been serviced by Toyota by the book. I tow a Whittley SL26 which is about 3.2mtrs high, 24 feet long and frighteningly heavy when fully loaded. The Cruiser has never missed a beat and I’d say it’s resale value would be around $50k. I paid $82,500 on the road. Yes it drinks when pulling up hills but she makes 650Nm and that’s what makes this such a good tow vehicle, it does everything easily, reducing driver fatigue. I might add if you can afford the $90k for the car and similar money, if not considerably more for the toy you are towing, then the fuel bill really is only a small consideration in the big scheme. I tow at 95kmh in 5th and that’s a happy medium, I can tow at 110 but what’s the hurry. Honestly, bitching over a few k/L here and there, get over it. I’d like to know how many keyboard warriors commenting on this subject actually own either of these cars and pull heavy loads regularly! In perspective, my boats returns 1.2 km per liter and that’s economical.

    That would have to be one of the worst, most biased reviews I have ever seen CarsGuide. Full of preconceived opinions and very little facts to back them up. The Cruiser wins due to reliability? Seriously? Research shows that the 200 series isn't as reliable as people think it is. Toyota is living off a reputation that isn't fitting for the 200. The reviewer crapped on about how much fuel the Patrol would use towing, to the point of getting carried away about fuel stop planning. The figures then revealed that the effective range is basically the same. The Patrol used 0.2 l/100 more, but has a 2 litre bigger tank, so they would be near as makes no difference the same. As far as everything else goes, well thats how he sees it and thats fine. Might pay to get someone else to redo the review so you can get some credibility back though.

My wife’s RAV4 has more modern technology but for me the land cruiser has so far been bullet proof.i look at it as a tractor which is great off road and for towing. Never had a problem. I k ow two people who bought the Patrols. They are cheaper and have much more modern technology but are two different vehicles. They have had no reliability issues but in real world driving when towing or in the sand use massive more fuel. Where I use 18 liters per 100 km they are closer to 30 lts per 100km. Also stability in towing is better for the land cruiser as the solid axle manages weight better but when not towing the Patrol seems to have a better ride. So different vehicles for different purposes. UN modified on an off-road track both perform very well. Land cruisers do have a a good record of still performing well after 500,000 km’s when well serviced and many years of use but most people only keep a vehicle for 5 to 7 years. Buy what fits your purpose...they are different vehicles.

    Top spec Nissan around $2.5k cheaper, 0.2L/100 difference in fuel economy, that's about 1/3 of a cup of coffee over 100km, $96k for cheap plastics but I can pat myself on the back because I paid for a bs reputation and status.
    Then more paid for comment bs about comfort, "I wouldn't have noticed the difference if I hadn't driven them back to back" in other words there's really no difference at all, but I'm now going to bag the Nissan as much as I can. Talk about vague steering but nothing about overall handling did Nissan's apparently firmer ride make for more stable handling? As for steering tyre brand, type, size, profile, pressure, way too much there to flippantly blame the car
    I'd buy the Nissan.

Unlike the 200 series the Y62 has proven it's reliability over the last 10 years, whereas landcruiser user forums are full of 200 series horror stories. As for the interior the 200 GXL is absolutely stripped out poverty spec inside, it's 20 years behind a TI Patrol and yet still costs more. @peterj5751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is the second review in the last couple of months which has compared towing economy between these two cars and come up with a similar result. It seems impossible on physics alone that a petrol car and a diesel one of similar power and weight can achieve such similar economy over the same conditions. If nothing else, there is more energy per litre in diesel than petrol. But, if this is really true, the Patrol will be cheaper to own. Maintenance is in favour of the petrol Patrol without the complexity of diesel injection and dpfs and combined with the price difference, I can’t see the Landcruiser ever catching up. For raw reliability, the Patrols are bullet proof as are the Landcruisers. Points go to the Landcruiser for parts availability in the outback though.
    Having said all of this though, owners of Y62 Patrols will say that economy varies more with the Patrol than the Landcruiser. If in doubt, check out Dash Off-road TH-cam channel. That is a big thing for remote travel where being able to predict whether you can make the next fuel stop is critical. As an ex owner of the GQ Patrol and a current owner of a Prado I can say that I am neutral on brand loyalty so for me this is a very interesting comparison.

You went on and on about how much fuel the Y62 would drink yet they were almost the same for towing. Drive gave the Y62 car of the year over LC your evaluation wrongly favours the LC so as a reviewer you can only be described as incompetent cheers Col

  • @gillestheophile9682
    @gillestheophile9682 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Poor review. Not comparing apples with apples. Why not review the top spec LC which has an almost 35k PRICE difference. Then you could re-write your value segment. You mention the Patrol's harsher ride. It has an 18inch wheel as opposed the GXL LC's 17inch with 285 tyres Vs the patrols 265. The LC Sahara has 18 inch wheels with a lower profile!! Maybe that would ride more like the Patrol?
    You're "reliability" verdict is unsubstantiated. A quick google search shows too much information on the problems that the V8 4.5DTT has plagued grey nomads with. Also how reliable is the LC trip computer fuel stats. A significant difference to you're actual figures. How can they get away with understating the L/100km towing by 11L/100? No mention of that in your review? How reliable will the GXL be in an accident whilst towing at max GCM with its almost non existent safety features? Maybe this review is just another unreliable opinion!!! Ahhhh and I almost forgot. You summarise to the point that the rest of the world will experience worse fuel economy due to having a heavier foot than you BUT you claimed to have an inner hoon whilst driving the patrol?

      @AJ_Off_Road 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not entirely. Whilst it certainly would suit a lot of people, and seems to be great bang for buck, loaded up that caravan would be about 3100kg. Rexton has a GCM of 5960, deduct the 3100 leaves you 2860kg. The van has an empty ball weight of around 180kg, so in reality a minimum of 200kg loaded (if not 250kg), so that taking that off leaves 2660kg. Deduct the weight of the car leaves you with 372kg of payload to carry the family and any bits and bobs or mods you may want on the car, and that figure is likely to be even less in reality, as the van is likely to have more than only a 200kg ball when loaded).
      Do the same figures on the Patrol and you are left with 585kg payload (after towball weight accounted for), 213kg more that the Rexton.
      Take that caravan up to the claimed max tow capacity of 3500kg and due to the GCM, the Rexton is left with a payload of 162kg, and thats without even taking into account the towball. Put 200kg down on the towball and suddenly you are already over the limit of the the GVM of the car by 38kg, and that's before one person has even stepped into it.
      Do the same again on the Patrol and once again you still have a payload of 565kg.
      Rexton very well might be a great value car, and perfect for a lot of mid sized caravaners, but won't do the "same job" as you say.

    The really interesting thing here is how poorly the Diesel Landcruiser performed. It should be allot more efficient. But it isn't. Toyota have engineered massive complexity into their engine and while it generates torque the lightweight complex design costs both fuel and reliability. It has very low resilience. The number of 200s with new engines new injectors etc is staggering. And it has a dreaded DPF. I predict that people will get fed up with 30k plus bills and you won't be able to give these vehicles away. The Patrol isn't perfect but it's engine seems to be pretty reliable and clearly it hasn't suffered the failures that Toyota is experiencing. The reality however is that some modern 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel engine are allot simpler and yet stronger. The Holden Colorado is an interesting example. Italian based forged internals plus big bearings and a much heavier block than in say a Range Rover that breaks crank shafts has resulted in a pretty bullet proof engine. Because it is actually a proper truck engine. Not a car engine and that in part is why the Toyota is disappointing. My old 4.5 twin cam Toyota petrol engine was similarly indestructible. But the really interesting comparison would be to compare the Petrol landcruiser to the Petrol Patrol and then factor in reliability and parts availability.

    Sorry i disagree even though im a die hard toyota fan but be honest here the vx200 has been out classed here, i drove both of these vehicles and i must say the firm ride is nonsens bothe toyota and patrol i drove we deflated the tyres to 2bar all around the patrol handled bad road much better, in this review i wonder if they even checked the tyres pressures.

    Toyota do make some really reliable cars. For example, Corolla. Nissan make somereliable car I ever owned really unreliable cars, post Renault take over. However, has the Landcruiser ever been reliable? Compared to a LandRover, yes of course. Compared to a Patrol? Mmm , maybe not. I bought a 7 year old Landcruiser 75 when I was 21. After 18 months I had to get rid of it. It was an unreliable POS. Cost me a fortune. I then brought a 5 year old GQ Patrol. I owned that 18 and a half years. The most reliable car I ever owned. My mates who bought 80 series were forever blowing cv’s, front diffs and gearboxes. Same with those who bought manual 100 series. So, yep, LandCruiser has a long term reputation to those in the know for unreliability. Will y62 be better than 200? Who knows.

    Obviously this guy is a Toyota driver . You can tell from his first sentence !!!! Apples for apples the Patrol kills the Landcruiser across the board !!!!!! A Lancruiser with comparable specs is around $140,000 .

    Yep, came across as Biased. Same consumption but petrol is cheaper and so is petrol engine servicing. Sponsored review vs unwanted results. We all know which car stood out, and it wasn’t the sponsored one.
