If they came in manual. We would have one.
As a result we have held onto our immaculate 100 series GXL TD manual.
It’s reliability, power, comfort, decent off road ability, on road ride and handling, incredibly good fuel economy and relative cheapness of ownership makes us happy to keep her.
410000 careful km with narry a problem 3 kids raised in her. A wonderful car. Now it’s just the 2 of us she is our frequent holiday accomodation. Thank you Toyota for building us a wonderful car.

I'm 100% sure these 200 series came with a manual transmission...if you got the 4.0 V6 petrol engine in the first few years. So you're basically saying that the ones you got in your country didn't come with that manual transmission, or your country didn't get that engine.

I see many comments saying the older format of the video are more favorable. I honestly agree. The way it just tells us what it is, variations, tech, safety, driving impressions & performance, what goes wrong (exterior->interior->mechanical), verdict.
It was just easier to watch and I find myself come back again and again just to remember the info. in my head. (Even tho some of the cars in this channel are never in my considerations). I won't quit watching the channel if they keep it the current way but like the cars, the old one seems to be better than the new ones.
Just remember not everything needs to be "improved" and the best car review videos are the ones that are funny and hilarious in the presentation, but not the format of the video.
Your target audiences are adults who are looking for real cars but not hotwheels after all.
However, just want to say really appreciate the effort thrown into these videos and the advertisements are actually helpful ones rather than some VPN as you mentioned in the best/worse car of the year video. Most channels don't care and just put any advertisements they can get.

Here's what goes wrong with them and what you need to modify. All credit to "Top 5 Toyota Landcruiser Design Failures" by Jaffa Adventures. Its worth a watch. But this is what he talks about: there are design faults from factory that you need to fix straight away. take the transmission for example. it stays in 5th gear and wont go into 6th! this is a common problem. when doing 100 on a dead flat road you're lucky if it goes into 6th. the torque converter slips. holding 5th gear creates alot of heat in the gearbox which burns your oil and leads to premature wear if not changed more regularly. especially if you towing. (it is great to hear your new car has had this upgraded with a torque lock up kit! you have fixed the most important issue! On-top of this though the biggest red flag from factory is the airbox! it doesnt even seal properly. its a known problem at taking in dust. people have had dust in their engines and had to get complete engine rebuilds. the seal and paper filters let it down at failing to stop dust getting in.
Also...the top mount intercooler is inefficient and should of gotten the 79 series scoop to help airflow instead. a great mod some do to their 200 is to change to that hood scoop.
smack a bullbar, winch and spotties on the front in the wrong placement areas and the standard intake is no where near efficient from the front at cooling the top mount.

Fantastic vehicle for towing and that's why I own one. I bought a 2021 GX new with 10 years Toyota warranty and I will trade/sell it before that runs out. The VX is the model to go for but I couldn't find a new one for sale in 2021 so I opted for the GX. Terrible headlights in fact they are dangerous, the GPS is best described as being hopeless, the stereo system is the worst in any car I have owned, no aircon in the back seat area means having to turn the fan to a higher setting in the front and no proximity cameras at all make parking in shopping centres a nightmare. I tried a Nissan Y62 but not enough legroom in the front for me which is a shame because they were so much cheaper at the time ($25K). If I didn't own a caravan I would buy a Prado.

Lexus LX570 interiors are nicer. Seats are also more supportive (driver's has thigh support). On the used market, here in the USA, LX570's go about $10,000 USD LESS than LC200 (Toyota tax). They both have the same suspension upgrades and I think the difference in the handling is minor at best. The lack of KDSS is one of the reasons I chose the GXL over a VX. I valued the simplicity and reliability of the normal anti roll bars.

RUST! Yes there's plenty out there with rust. Most owners that go fourby driving don't clean underneath but the rust underneath is not the worst of the rust problems. At my mates smash repairs, these are their bread & butter jobs. Rust happens on the turret (roof), tailgate & where the tailgate sits, rear side windows & worst of all, the front windscreen and A pillar. These are not easy jobs to repair as trim has to come out & that takes time to remove. If your buying one, check these areas very closely if they have been repaired & find out if it was done in the backyard or a proper repair shop. A repair shop will use metal & weld it whereas the backyarders will use bog. Underneath the chassis mainly get surface rust but I've seen some bad ones so make sure the chassis has been repaired properly. Use a good brand of underbody rust protector.
A funny story that happened a couple of years ago when a customer bought a 200 series cheap. Underneath was all fine but there was rust around the windscreen, A pillar & turret. He wanted it repaired & a full body respray. He wanted it in a weeks time so it was all hands on deck. When it was finished, it was like it came from the showroom floor. The customer paid & went on his way. A week later the customer came back. The 200 series had scratches all over it & wanted repaired under warranty. We found out he took it off road & of course twigs, branches & rocks scratched the crap out of it. When we told him that it can't be done as it was used off road, he got angry & we told him & it was even on the invoice that the paint warranty would be void if the vehicle was taken off road. We gave it a buff (we didn't have to but it only helped a bit) but he also had some panel damage due to his off road excursion.
If you're buying one, take your time & go over it carefully before outlaying any cash!

Toyotas are not indestructible, to get 400000+km out them requires lots of maintenance/money. All Toyota diesels require new injectors at some time, 200 - 300k km. In February my mate spent $9500 for new injectors, inlet manifold decarb, (Prado $5-6k). Personally, two weeks ago $5300 for new upper control arms and new rubbers throughout the suspension plus a full service. The six speed gearbox shuffles around locking up, unlocking, shifting between 5th and 6th all the frigging time. Torque converter lockup kit works well, however, it will set you back $2200. (In my opinion don't let them remap the gearbox). For an engineer approved suspension upgrade for the overweight caravan will set you back $5k. Great trucks, excellent for pulling the van: yep they drive like a truck. Mine sits around for holidays and trips and yes, pulling 3 tons of van most of the time I drive arrive around Sydney in a Mazda. Prices for them are coming down.

Met a grey nomad last year, doing a lap in his 200 series diesel with van in tow.
During his trip his engine died due to the poorly designed airbox and dusting.
New long motor from Toyota + install cost him $40k! 😲😲😲
How can such an expensive vehicle, with such a perceived reputation for quality, suffer these kind of issues..... Another under-cooked design from Toyota.
Toyota should be redesigning and retrofitting improved airboxes into all of these vehicles.
But they won't. And people still line up to buy these things at ridiculous prices...... 🤦‍♂️

    • @CruiserBrah
      @CruiserBrah หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's not an issue, it's a way of protecting 5th and 6th gears.
Pretty much all transmissions in most cars, anything over 4th gear is an overdrive. Being an overdrive, it overloads the transmission components and cal lead to over heating and/or failure.
Not so common these days, but once apon a time was a critical issue.

With most modern cars even the best (80's and 90's) with no product obsolescence there is a list of things that go wrong.
However, the list is far shorter than that of cars that came before or after them.
The problem is with the people. They have lost the ability to want to repair, learn to repair, invest on tools to repair and the tolerance to have repair items in their home.
With today's convenient, super clean, super shiny and zero tolerance to used items, these vehicles will be doomed.
Even for the Gen X'ers (probably the last generation to have the will and ability to repair) these will be a greater struggle than 80's 90's cars which already have computers (already without the designed barriers to repair, lock outs and special tools etc).
