But did you see David the patrol tows the load for less than that of the cruiser lol whilst towing I get 13.9-15.9lph around town with an exhaust so I’m fairly happy with it creeps up if I’m in constant stop start through city traffic but it’s a 3t car trying to get it’s far ass off the line lol
Great review, because I know you're a die hard cruiser man so that makes it more impressive, I commend you on your honesty and think you should do car reviews😉. That was one of the best real world test reviews I've seen, take note car reviewers.
Thanks Nando, and cheers for watching. It was important to us to do the comparison the right way. We love our cruisers, and still think they are a great car but we had to be fair.
I had LC200 before Y62. Honestly, even without load, LC200 drinks more than 62 while doing school run plus bit highway (about 20%). I just don’t understand why so many people keep saying how thirsty is the Patrol. While It’s not… both of them are not some eco friendly car by any means.
Just like you I had a 200. Now in my garage and in front of my van is a 2021 Y62 and I couldn't be happier. The explanation for the better fuel economy is called technology compared to the 200. The 5.6 has variable valve timing and variable valve lift plus a seven speed auto which results in just loads of horsepower and better engine braking. Its biggest down fall is its performance as drivers cant resist to press the accelerator to hear and feel the big naturally aspirated V8 go. But as an owner that has now come to drive it sensibly as you mentioned you should, I now get 12.5l/100. The 19l/100 you mentioned is typical of a 200 driver as they cant believe the bang for buck when first driving the Y62.
@@johngunning2123 hey John I just returned from northern NSW after three months in my Y62 towing our 3.5 tonne caravan. I could get the fuel economy as low as 15.8ltr/100. The highest I recorded was 16.8ltr/100 through the hills. As I mentioned I did have a LC200 and I also got 20ltr/100. The other point to mention is the power difference. The y62 has 300kw and you certainly know when you hit the hills. It makes towing a dream.
Great honest review. My husband has always been a cruiser man, when it comes to towing. Was always concerned about fuel economy. Went with a Patrol this time. Overall, very very impressed & happy with our purchase.
Best comparison I have ever seen! I used to favour Patrols back in the 80' sand 90's. Went to Landcruisers in 2000 (100 series petrol) and then 200 series (V8 diesel) in 2013, which I still have and absolutely love. Recently looked at the 300 series as an update, but I don't like them. by the way, I tow a 3000kg van. Like you, I am very surprised with the outcome of the comparison. There is no doubt that overall, the Patrol is the winner and especially impressed with what you can do to the Patrol with the money from the price difference. Again, I thought your comparison test was brilliant ...... except for that bloody awful, overly loud, shithouse music between the talking bits. (Many thanks to the person who evented the "mute button").
Great honest comparison. You made my life easier to choose the best V8 and that is Nissan. Placing order for Nissan and hope to get it this year. Thanks again.
Be good to see a y62 chop for mr graham Cahill everything done the same as Shaun whales same set up etc and the full pricing on each from purchase to finish then they run them side by side 👍🏼 love the dmw builds keep Up great work
Cheers Karl, That would be cool. We might have to convince Graham eh? Somehow I don't think it would take much convincing, Graham is a fan of the Patrol as everyone knows.
@@dirtymuddyweekends Thanks DMW I bet Graham would take no convincing at all and be great publicity for DMW builds. Also GVM upgrades not to mention the capabilities of extended chassis and the better ride and handling this also makes Over factory set ups. Be a great plug for each company as well Nissan and Toyota. Keep up the great work and quality that the whole DMW team do and the promos. One day hopefully will be looking at this option for our touring rig.
Really impressive production and unbiased product comparison. You took the time to evaluate all the little issues relating to heavy van towing. I have seen various comparison tests done before by other reviewers but this is the best true comparison I've ever found between these two. Well done, and thank you.
What a joke! Toyota dealers in WA have repeatedly knocked me back when I have called in for assistance. In Geraldton now (15/07/2021) with starter motor issues. Toyota said, "we can't book you in for at least two weeks". In Darwin in May. I had to wait two weeks to have a new Turbo fitted. $4500. Karratha, I need a service....Sorry we are booked out! Currently driving to Perth towing a caravan but expect the same Toyota dealership friendliness....F*** off we are busy!
everyone seems to have overlooked the fact that the Patrol has a proper lockup clutch in the torque converter and when you shift to manual it works like a manual box. it saves so much fuel and makes it so good to drive.
@@Tangaroa775 Ok.,buts been in at NPD for a while in the Mainland, and by the website its in the lower Nth now,its $2.40 a litre, but you get a discount with a fuel card.
Amazing video mate! Watched all 50 mins of it! We did the cinematic reveal of our Y62 too in our channel! We got Y62 ourself and thanks to @DASH OffRoad - you contact Paul helped us get the car in a month! Go the MIGHTY patrol 💪💪💪 Likes to you @DMW looking forward for more of it! 🤟🏻
I see the Patrol has a lift. Another TH-camr (DASH Off-road)posted that the Patrol may need the HBMC pressure lifted to make sure the shocks see full pressure now they are extended. Might’ve been the lightness felt in the front and the skittish feeling in the rear.
Excellent, thorough and professional review. Thanks for your efforts, it is very timely for my situation. My wife and I both have 200 series and we are considering changing one to the Patrol- it may now be the tow tug that changes instead of the shopping cart! Thanks again for the awesome job on this test. New subscriber here. Two thumbs up!
Great video with awesome production quality. I’ve had my 2021 Ti-L for only 4 weeks. Fantastic first impressions. Great road trip car. Just installed a Pacemaker King Brown exhaust, excellent sound quality and can’t make it drone.
Thanks for Watching Michael. I think the sound out of your car would be fantastic! Did you notice any performance gains? (not on a dyno, but just daily driving)
@@dirtymuddyweekends Yes Mate. Definitely more punchy off the line and the mid-range a little meatier. My Mechanics at Autotech in Canberra are tied up with Mustang Motorsport (my “other” addiction..) so are Dyno equipped. They did one run (I’m still on oem wheels/tyres) after install and had 180kw at all 4 wheels. They were pretty happy with that. Harrop are recommending a high flow K&N Air Filter as being sufficient due to oem air box being pretty good. So, next step is it will go back for the K&N AF and a custom tune. They did a stage one tune on my Mustang and I’m really impressed with their map. Great improvement across the whole rev range but to my mind it’s the small throttle opening usage being clean that is a great indicator of a good Map and it has that in spades.
You should check out Jb reviews. He tow tests around 4t behind the 1500 LTZ 6.2l. And also tests the 6.6l petrol 2500 LTZ (we don't get petrol 2500s here in Australia).
Spot on the fuel consumption. Currently towing 3.2 ton around AUS with a Y62 Patrol and so far after nearly 11,000 k’s are averaging 21.58 lph. I haven’t found the wobbly rear end or the twitchy steering but maybe I’m use to it. The reason why you didn’t hit the step on the van with the Snoozer is because you took a different line.
Awesome video well worth watching and good to see a video made for the garden variety people who are hitting the road now days with caravans. Old GU Patrol man here 🤠
Good comparison Ruben. I was surprised by the fuel economy when towing. Wow! Glad you did a mixed circuit of gravel etc. the only other comparison I’ve seen was only black top driving. So yours is definitely more real world for me anyway. Enjoy playing with the Patrol. Can’t wait to see if you chop it!?
I previously had a 2009 ford territory GHIA Rwd and had to upgrade to tow my Magnum 8.5 (28 foot) trailer sailer with all up weight incl trailer at 2.98 ton. In MAY21 I put down a deposit on a new y62 TI and was quoted sep/oct21 delivery. As I needed a tow vehicle in between I bought a 2019 Ti Patrol, Pearl white and black interior. The wife asked what do we do when we take delivery of the new y62….with Covid and lock down I just said we will work it out as we go along. The wife loved the patrol as it drove like a car with the high view of the traffic and 360 camera can park easier than the ford territory. Then late sep21 I got the call the new one (pearl white with the beige interior) will be ready for pick up in oct21. The choice was very clear the wife’s gets the new one and we will be a two patrol family. Yes that’s right we have two white stock patrols in the driveway. The only mod is the addition of a tow bar to my Patrol. So when we go interstate take my patrol (now done 60,000kms) and keep hers in the garage (only done the shopping and school pic ups and at 4,000km). On AUS Day JAN22 drove at the speed limit from Melb 2 Sydney return with the family of four and langage and achieved 11.4L PER 100KM (better than the 2009 ford territory Ghia rwd at 13.5L 100KM). Nearly forgot when I tow the boat I get 26L PER 100kms WOW! Well this is the extra investment you have to pay for having a boat. My next trip is Melb to Hervey Bay (QLD) to do the Bay 2 Bay yacht race on 30APR with return trip of over 3,732km. That is at least 3,732/100 x 26L x $2.50 = $2,426 in petrol or nearly 7 tanks. That is the investment I am willing to safely take my boat, family and dog on holiday and give me happiness!
G’day Reuben. This was the first time I’ve watched your channel. This was a well conducted honest review. There’s a vehicle that most reviewers overlook. The Land Rover Discovery 5. We have an MY19 twin turbo 3lt V6 designated the Sv6. The Sv6 makes 225kw and 700Nm of torque delivered by a full time 4WD 8-speed ZF Transmission with automatically locking centre and rear diffs. Traction control takes care of the front diff.. Our 7-seater has a payload of 864kg and tows 3500kg with a GCM of 6700kg. Your LC 200’s crawl mode was preceded by the Land Rover designed All Terrain Progress Control, basically a low range cruise control which continuously monitors the terrain adjusts traction and is equipped with Low Traction Launch. The rock, sand, etc modes of the Nissan in the D5 are called Terrain Response 2 and were first designed and used by Land Rover in the D4 almost 20 years ago. No rocket science here. In 2019, we did a 35520 “Lap” towing a 3200kg semi- off-road van. These are our fuel figures obtained in the exact same way as yours in the test. We travelled 35520km of which 22000+/- a few km was towing our beautiful 21'6"Jayco Silverline Outback weighing almost 3300kg. We had a GCM of 6400kg. In total we refuelled 106 times from the pump and 4 top ups from our jerry cans using 5285.4 litres of fuel at a cost of $8288.94 = $1.57/lt. The most we paid was $2.35/lt on Fraser Island. Our hardest travelling was the Gibb River Road where we averaged 27kph for 600km 😱 Fuel consumption on The Gibb was 17.6l/100km. Overall, our fuel consumption was excellent as we averaged 15.16l/100km. Towing we averaged 16.5l/100. Our heaviest fuel consumption was Fraser Island at 21.4l/100km, closely followed by some towing into headwinds of just under 21l/100 on 6 occasions. Our best towing was 13.0l/100 and best overall was 8.5l/100. Suspension is fully independent with self levelling airbags and there is a native sway control which keeps it feeling like a rock on the road, bitumen or dirt. Downside is that the D5 is much more expensive than the L62, but similar to a Sahara. We’re now up to 65000 km with no reliability issues. I’m in no way criticising your review. It was excellent. Please be aware there is another option. I’m so confident of our very real figures that I’m prepared to let you repeat your test with my D5 next time we’re in Qld, if we ever get out of lockdown and Anastasia allows Victorians back. Cheers. We’ve subscribed.
Thanks for your detailed message, as you are obviously very well researched in this model has anyone done a dual cab conversion on one and what’s the biggest GVM upgrade you can get fir them?
@@dirtymuddyweekends I have certainly never heard of a twin cab conversion. I’m on the Facebook Discovery 5 Owners Group - Australia with over 1000 members and also the international FB group. No one I’ve read has ever suggested it. A Brisbane Auto Engineer was doing GVM upgrades to axel capacity however, I think that is no longer legal?? It certainly wasn’t recognized outside of Qld as I asked him to do mine. A stage 2 (I hope that’s the correct terminology) would be great, but who’s gonna do the research and testing for such a limited market? I doubt that a twin cab is possible as the D5 is a monocoque with no ladder frame chassis like the Toyota’s Nissan’s and utes. This is definitely the domain of the big boys 😆 I’d love about a 500 mm extension/GVM/GCM but again no one is gonna do the research to find out if it’s possible due to the market. All that said, it’s a superb tourer. Comfortable, quiet, economical, powerful and Xlnt tow car. You never know, we might win Back In Black tomoz. Now that would be a real beast!
Thanks for the excellent review of both cars. I'm new to the towing a van thing, so I have a question, was the y62 stock standard with the suspension? And if it was do you recommend any change for towing a 3 ton van or is it ok to leave it as standard 🤔
Thank you for your honest test mate, your a legend I like how you have respect when respect was due, they are both a great car, I am a Nissan nut and hands down would pick the patrol. I honestly think that when towing a heavy load a weight distribution hitch should be used. Thank you again. Keep up the great work
Hard to find good honest reviews where the presenter isn't bought out, Looks like the 300 series rear side window has copied the patrol, Thanks for the vid
Well done Rubes on taking on the "Ford Vs Holden" of the 4x4 world! Thanks for honest opinions. Of course both vehicles will excel in certain areas. I feel happy that you have showcased both makes with an equal eye. Well done for this info thanks mate. Oh... and diesels offer little to no engine braking (without jakes or exhaust braking) compared to petrol engines under similar conditions. Cheers, dd
Great video mate. Purely from a mechanical point of view, towing in an overdrive gear cannot be good long term, I understand it's not good for fuel economy not being in top gear but yeah loading up an overdrive gear isn't ideal
I agree and I think this is one of the reasons why the LC used more fuel when it should have used less. Engine Load when towing with load and in D is very high. Injector timing and duration cycles is more at lower boost. Another thing that is not standard and will not only help fuel economy, but control with hills is an auto locking TTC (Transmission Torque Converter), it also reduces power robbing automatic fluid temperature. This means it’s better for your transmission life due to the lower automatic transmission temps. Oil life increases as a result too. Wholesale Automatics in Victoria IMO are very experienced in any vehicle used for towing. Obviously to maximise fuel economy you would “ride the waves”…that is at the hill bottoms be at max legal speed, then adjusting the throttle so that when you are at the hill crest you are down to 15-20% less than the road maximum. Having twin turbos can really suck it with higher engine loads. The biggest way to avoid these loads is a combination of riding the waves and more importantly using manual mode to keep the Diesel engine revs up which gives a higher boost but lower engine LOAD overall. I hope this makes sense. It’s very difficult to explain it any simpler. It seems counter intuitive as diesels have high torque at low revs…but when towing with a turbo diesel you need slightly higher revs than when not towing. Not sure about the LC300, but it should be the same principle. Owners need to experiment to find that sweet spot.
Very good and honest review well done brother. The one thing that I can't believe is that the patrol got better fuel economy than the land cruiser. This was also the case in another test when THE Y62 pitted against the 200 series LC AND THE FORD F250 IT GOT BETTER FUEL ECONOMY THAN BOTH OF THEM
Have a Y62. Recommend fuel inside fuel lid is 98. I only use 98 and performance is superb. Didn't buy it to save on fuel, bought it for the performance.
Also, Patrol is RWD until you get rear wheel slip, then goes to AWD. Did wood cutting and forgot to take it out of 4WD. Drove 20k's in 4WD on sealed rd, didn't complain 1 little bit.
This is the best test comparison I have seen. I have been seriously looking at a replacement to my Colorado which is really efficient. But in terms of value the Patrol is much better value. And of course it doesn't have the dreaded DPF. The rear end can be stiffened with heavier standard height springs and heavier bushes. Would also be interesting with level ride bars. Thanks very impressed.
Great honest review. I'm thinking a set of WDH may have assisted in putting some weight back over the front wheels and removed some of that skittish steering.
You put a lot of automotive journalists to shame. For perspective buyers of either vehicle perhaps you could have made mention of known weaknesses of each vehicle such as the front CV's on the 200 that are prone to shock load breakages (particularly LHS) and the rear lower control arms on the Y62 that are prone to bending. Bloody good review mate. Can't wait for your LC300 review. At least it won't come with a load of BS !!
Not sure if it’s been mentioned as I couldn’t be bothered reading 500 plus comments but I noticed you put 91 octane in it where as they are suited for premium unleaded. I wonder if economy would have been better with the premium fuel
Most likely. :) BUT, how good is it that there is a car to suit everyone! If you don't like Toyota, buy the Nissan. If you love the 200, get that. It is good to have choice and people out enjoying different things. The main part is actually getting out and enjoying what ever it is you have.
Great review, BUT some numpties might get the wrong idea about towing mirrors. There are enough of them out there already who haven't the foggiest notion of what's behind them or worse...why that might be something they ought to know!!! When you set-out to put something like this in the public domain, I think it would be wise if you had the correct gear for the job (IE: towing mirrors). I know you commented on the lack thereof, but that doesn't excuse their omission. Also, it may have been wise to inform the potential buyer of the lower GVM when towing a heavy van.
Great review! Up the mighty patrol! Your mate shauno wont be happy with the fuel figures as he commented about " I wouldn't want to pay for the fuel bill" lol
The Patrol should be run on 98 not 91. It is however a credit to it that it can be run on both with no ill effect outside of power and economy. Fuel price should also be considered.
probably the best review I have seen. Well done. Two questions for you. 1 Did either of these vehicles have a suspension upgrade to cope with the 320 to 350 kg tow ball download or did you drive them with a saggy rear end? 2 You used 91 petrol. Surely the patrol would do better fuel economy on 95 or 98 as is recommended. Would love to know as I am going to buy either one of these in the next couple of weeks.
Thank you for the positive feedback! Regarding your questions: Neither of the vehicles had a suspension upgrade specifically for towing. We drove them as they were without any modifications to the suspension. However, it's worth considering upgrading the suspension if you plan to regularly tow heavy loads to ensure optimal performance and safety. You're correct that the Patrol might achieve better fuel economy with higher octane fuel like 95 or 98, as recommended by the manufacturer. Using higher octane fuel can sometimes improve engine performance and efficiency, but it can also depend on various factors such as driving conditions, load, and engine tuning. Ultimately, the decision between these vehicles will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. It's a good idea to test drive both and carefully consider factors like towing capacity, fuel efficiency, comfort, and overall driving experience before making your choice.
I 100% with the comments about the gearbox. It seems to be programmed for a different engine. In standard form it won’t give you 6th until you hit 116 km/h and then let off. It wants to kick down with the slightest pedal pressure and hates to lock the torque converter in 5th as well. Even around town it wants to rev the engine to 3000 rpm ion the lower gears just to keep up with normal traffic. It all seems pretty pointless to rev an engine with maximum torque between 1600 - 2600 rpm like this. I’ve had mine reflashed to improve this but it could still be much better. If anyone knows someone who can really tune the gearbox to my liking, please let us all know.
Hi Peter, we agree. The lock up and gearbox tune makes a big difference to how the car drives and fuel economy. We felt with this test that we had to test it in standard form to be fair on the comparison.
Hi. Peter I have owned my LC200 for over 5 years now but after purchasing I went back to Toowoomba Toyota to complain about the same issue, they came out with printed sheet from Toyota which highlighted how to overcome the problem. Basically you drive in sports mode, it does work to an extent but nodes not solve the issue completely.
@@colingardner2089 makes you wonder why a company as big as Toyota couldn’t just program it properly in the first place. If nothing else, they could have improved the economy without any mechanical changes. It’s not like they didn’t have the enough years to perfect this with the current model. 😄
@@dirtymuddyweekends what be very interesting would be a comparison doing a similar run with the cruiser, once with the lock-up kit disabled and once with it active to see the difference it makes. And ultimately again with the new 300 series one day. You just need someone to lend you one when they come out.
Picked up my Y62 last week and loving it, i Had a ram 1500 laramie but could not justify $150K for another Ram and after a week of running around I am so glad i went with the Y62, it is like driving on a cloud and fuel economy is about the same.
Great comparison video Reuben, just a couple of important things you didn’t mention. Cost difference on both brands websites, VX Cruiser $113k, Ti Patrol $88.5k... $24.5k buys a lot of petrol OR Towbar, Airbags & Weight Distribution Hitch to turn the Patrol into a towing weapon. Also, the Cruiser is much more expensive to service than the Patrol, making that Big Lap even more costly per Km. That $24.5k just keeps growing.
@@craigdavid6668 no it's not. check now and sell me a half price 2021 Patrol and add the difference from the half price. Also, the Cruiser is very slow at a traffic light drag race.
@@craigdavid6668 it’s call research, you should try it or maybe it might make you cry a little when you finally understand the deprecation are about the same.
No need to reflash the trans, although it's an option, a TC lock-up kit make a huge difference to both towing performance and economy as well as engine braking. Well worth the investment. It also allows you to get 6th from 95kph and hold it longer.
I don't know about Australia but I'm in the US and just recently got a 2020 Armada. I know it's lacking some of the 4WD features that the patrol has (Like Locking Diff) but I love it. We paid $30k USD and a comparable 2020 Land Cruiser is nearly $90k USD. I can't imagine that the price difference reflects actual value between the two vehicles. You don't see a ton of land cruisers running around the US and I have to imagine price has something to do with that.
2 weeks ago I travelled from Deniliquin to Wagga with a mate towing the same vans 3.5 off road caravans. My mate towing with a 2023 stock patrol and me towing with a stock 2021 LC200 ( stock beside both vehicles have had suspension upgrades ). We both fuelled in Deniliquin and travelled to Wagga. We both fuelled in Wagga 260 kms I put 47 litres in my LC200 filled to the top unable to fit anymore fuel in. My mate in the patrol fuelled 63 litres also fill to the top. 16 litres more fuel then the LC200 or 6 litres per 100 more then the LC200 It’s not a great deal more but on a 10000 kms trip you’re talking about 600 litres $1400 remembering these patrol take either 95-98 fuel.
Interested to know the suspension setup on both cars. Stock suspension or modified suspension? Guessing both are modified. And if modified, what was installed. Great review 👍
twin turbo V8 Diesel. I don't see any vents for all that heat to dissipate, so any 'heat soak' issues (coolant, oil, reliability, etc.) after some serious towing? Especially if you're buying a s/hand unit.
I understand the wisdom behind the y62 not needing a diesel. Coz it's just as efficient and fairly priced to begin with. But hell if a Patrol existed with the Cummins 50 from the TiTan... Then the game would have been over for lc200.
Real world add some head winds hills and a vehicle fitted with bullbar and roofrack and loaded. My Y62 averaged 26 LPH Carnarvon to Perth with 3.2 T offroad van.
I currently drive the 4L v6 pathfinder and i honestly think what the fuss was about..its a bloody quick vehicle and super light. Quite capable even without lockers (if you know how to drive) and its super cheap! Its quite thirsty though possibly worse than a y62, so im looking at these big v8s as my next upgrade!
Good review. 200 fuel economy would be even worse with a big canopy on the back. Would be good to see this repeated with a 300, Hilux, and Ford F-250. All 4 Adventure got good results in their economy run of their F250 vs the D-Max , only 1l/100k more.
I love how you weren’t bias, every else does these reviews and it’s always biased and I expected nothing less but you proved us wrong with honesty. I appreciate the solid axle handling the weight better that’s true. Only 2 things, a) it’s a petrol, it’s going to rev more and use its power not torque, that’s how a petrol is designed and it will do it easily it likes to rev, so bit unfair to say it’s revving a bit high. And b), these new gearboxes like the 7 speed but particularly 8 and 10 speed, they will hunt gears that’s the whole purpose that’s it’s job, so it’s always in the perfect rev range for the speed? Bit unfair to say that’s an issue when that’s it’s job? To use all the gears. But keep it fair, issue with the patrol, it shouldn’t jump to 7th gear, the cruiser is doing the right thing and NOT using its overdrive gear as you shouldn’t tow heavy loads with overdrive gears?
Hi Brennan, Appreciate your feedback and fair comments however 200 series owners will know it is more than just staying in the rev range, the engine has the torque but the transmission tuning was done with an emission bias rather than drive ability. The slipping of the converter not only reduces torque it heats up which reduces lifespan so tuning helps all this.
I have owned a Dec 2007 200 series Diesel for 8 years and Y62 since Nov 2020 and towed same van over same ground. My experience is that the fuel use is similar. Not sure what went on in that drive. The lift and air bags on the Patrol should have been stated upfront. Not defending 200, just saying apples to apples should be that. The camera assessment: sorry all, but the Y62 reversing camera is crap compared to the 2007 Toyota. The noise factor: if tyres are stock then its an interesting opinion. The other thing - the description kept changing between "yesterday " and "this morning "... was the test done on the same day or not? Were the temperature and humidity identical?.... Some more information would greatly assist thanks. Some further thoughts on the fuel use. The Nissan is an on-demand 4wd system compared to full time for Toyota. That will make a difference. The Nissan has lock up on 3rd-7th gears, the Toyota doesn't. And as stated, the Nissan will use top gear whereas the Toyota won't unless above 110. And despite the superior torque numbers, you do have to work the diesel hard to keep it up to speed. Agree 100% with the engine braking assessment. The Toyota has woeful compression braking. The gearbox is the main culprit I believe, in combination with lower engine compression compared to the older turbo and non-turbo diesels. The Nissan in this comparison does not have stock suspension either lol. Lifted.
The newer diesel has a lot more pollution crap on them the older diesels are better on fuel, lots of people have said the old Hilux was better on fuel than the newer ones same for the ranger and bt50s older ones got better fuel economy.
@@dazzalincoballance3990 nah mate, the y62 has a 2in lift. That'll be why it's feeling squirmish now and then in the test. The lift is fine but the wheel alignment must be correct or you'll have heaps off problems.
The payload capacity for both is disappointing. Add a bull bar, winch, fridge and tow ball weight and you exceed your GVM. You would think these manufacturers would provide more payload as factory standard. For both vehicles you need to go through the hassle of getting a GVM upgrade.
well there you go, this is more than likely with the 200 series having 2006-7 technology used in all models right up to the 300 series i would reckon, the y62 has 2013 tech with variable this and that for good economy and the price of diesel as opposed to petrol ,the patrol would be a winner for me hands down, bloody glad i watched this, great vid.
Should add in comments that when towing a large van / trailer that a simple solution would be to have airbags or different springs in the Y62 to fix the softness
A very interesting conclusion in my opinion. The result was a surprise to me too. We have an HDJ100R which I love. One of my mates worked for a mining company & his first company vehicle was an HDJ79R which was replaced by a V8 Diesel cab chassis, he wanted the six cylinder back because he reckoned it was a better engine then the V8. I would be interested to see a comparison between the 100 series & the V8 Patrol. The 6 cylinder petrol Patrols seemed to chug petrol, especially compared to the 4.2 litre diesels.
The turbo diesel 100 series were gold, the petrol sixes were horrid on fuel, the petrol V8’s used fuel too but sounded good and made you smile while you did it, so you know I liked them ! Ha ha ha, I have a LC200 now and yeah it’s ok but a good 100 is still a good thing.
😆Patrol Y62 King of The SUV, beat the outdated & way toooo overpriceddd Toyta LC 200 easily in terms of price, performance & petrol consumption : 22 vs 29L/100km unbelievable! Toyta fanboy have to accept this hard facts lol!
Great video, the Patrols aren’t too bad hey 🙌. $5 fine for talking about fuel consumption though 🤑. Go the MIGHTY Patrol 🦾🦾🦾
hahaha $5!!! yikes! :)
I'm currently achieving 21/litres per 100 with my 200 series.

Woot woot bout time the patrol got some recognition. We love our S5 TiL. I'm getting rougly 14lt to 100klm round town and I'm a leadfoot.
Im sure you are...
Good to know, just ordered one, was wondering what the real figures are around town 👍
Great honest review.
My husband has always been a cruiser man, when it comes to towing. Was always concerned about fuel economy.
Went with a Patrol this time.
Overall, very very impressed & happy with our purchase.
That's awesome to hear! It's all about finding the right fit for your needs. Glad the Patrol is impressing you both! Happy towing adventures ahead!
Agree 100% about the crap music. Mute button is great.

Great honest comparison. You made my life easier to choose the best V8 and that is Nissan. Placing order for Nissan and hope to get it this year. Thanks again.
Thank you for the feedback and taking the time to watch the video! The Nissan is a great car. All the best with the new vehicle. :)
Be good to see a y62 chop for mr graham Cahill everything done the same as Shaun whales same set up etc and the full pricing on each from purchase to finish then they run them side by side 👍🏼 love the dmw builds keep
Up great work
Cheers Karl, That would be cool.
Chopped Y62 for Graham please!
Really impressive production and unbiased product comparison. You took the time to evaluate all the little issues relating to heavy van towing. I have seen various comparison tests done before by other reviewers but this is the best true comparison I've ever found between these two. Well done, and thank you.
Thank you Peter. Thanks for taking the time to watch it and even more so to comment here. We enjoyed putting this video together. :)
Awesome mate, best comparison test I've seen for a while now.
I'm also a cruiser guy but for the money really considering the patrol now.👍👍
Thanks Brett! Cheers!
This is the best comparison I have seen. Well done! Both great vehicles. I must say I would go Patrol.
Great honest review Ruben on both 4wd's, one of the best I've ever seen mate, and go the mighty PATROL a clear winner in my opinion 👌👌🍺🍺

Which is why Toyota rules the outback.
You got to love the VK56
everyone seems to have overlooked the fact that the Patrol has a proper lockup clutch in the torque converter and when you shift to manual it works like a manual box. it saves so much fuel and makes it so good to drive.
👍
Nothing funnier than passing other caravans on a climb in 4th at 100...
200 owner that is also shocked at the fuel economy ... good work and a great review ...
Thanks Pen
Go the Patrol 😍😍 Good video mate! But hey cmon give the poor girl some 98 octane she is better than 91 😭😭

Great video guys. Only one comment is that I would have loved to hear the cars instead of the music. Great video, so thorough.
Thanks for the feedback Dave :)
Agree, music was switching me off. Engine sounds would have been much better!
I see the Patrol has a lift. Another TH-camr (DASH Off-road)posted that the Patrol may need the HBMC pressure lifted to make sure the shocks see full pressure now they are extended. Might’ve been the lightness felt in the front and the skittish feeling in the rear.
HBMC was sorted already, we do this in house 👍
Excellent, thorough and professional review. Thanks for your efforts, it is very timely for my situation. My wife and I both have 200 series and we are considering changing one to the Patrol- it may now be the tow tug that changes instead of the shopping cart! Thanks again for the awesome job on this test. New subscriber here. Two thumbs up!
Cheers Justin, best of luck in finding one if you choose to have best of both worlds
Patrol's suspension seemed to be lifted, which obviously affected the car handling. At regular suspension height this thing handles rock solid.
I dont think it was lifted
That Patrol is stock.
Premium unleaded, which wasn't used here, is also a significant factor when comparing the two.
Excellent review and thanks for sharing
Now it would be great if you could do the same thing with the new Silverado 1500 LTZ and RAM 1500 Laramie.
You should check out Jb reviews. He tow tests around 4t behind the 1500 LTZ 6.2l. And also tests the 6.6l petrol 2500 LTZ (we don't get petrol 2500s here in Australia).
Hi Chris, we would certainly be keen too!
Not sure if you would have any idea but getting my patrol in July going to be towing 1.7 tonnes would I need airbags

Awesome video well worth watching and good to see a video made for the garden variety people who are hitting the road now days with caravans. Old GU Patrol man here 🤠
Nothing wrong with the big GU Jase! Cheers for watching mate.
Cheers mate 👍. Great vlog 👍
You did a great job with this review - this was how 4wd247 should have done it! And a natural in front of a camera!

Thanks for the excellent review of both cars. I'm new to the towing a van thing, so I have a question, was the y62 stock standard with the suspension? And if it was do you recommend any change for towing a 3 ton van or is it ok to leave it as standard 🤔
The Patrol just had airbags in the rear. That would be a recommendation for towing the 3 ton van with the patrol in our opinion. Cheers
My Lexus 2011 had the foot handbrake as well. Love it
It is pretty much finished, but we have started making a pretty decent upgrade to it this week. It is nearly finished.
Thank you for your honest test mate, your a legend I like how you have respect when respect was due, they are both a great car, I am a Nissan nut and hands down would pick the patrol. Nissan does not recommend using a wdh. Most are running bags and upgraded springs. Works for me towing a 3.5t van
We would recommend getting a gvm sorted to suit your build rather than a WDH.

Cheers, dd
Well said! We appreciate that. Thanks for watching, mate!
Excellent vid. I am really struggling atm with what tow vehicle to get and your vid really helped.
Glad you enjoyed it Azza. Have a drive of a few, you will get a feel for what you think may suit you. Luckily we are spoilt for choice in Australia.

For the price of a Y62 you can put airbags in the rear & get a ecu tune or supercharger fitted for the extra torque and still be Cheaper than a 200
Fantastic honest review did the patrol have factory suspension or airbag added thanks
Factory suspension, Craig. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Love watching these things but how about toning down the music . All these types of shows seem to favour head banging music
Hey David, thank you for watching and for the feedback. :)

Very good and honest review well done brother. The one thing that I can't believe is that the patrol got better fuel economy than the land cruiser. This was also the case in another test when THE Y62 pitted against the 200 series LC AND THE FORD F250 IT GOT BETTER FUEL ECONOMY THAN BOTH OF THEM
A lot of vehicles have a foot park brake including Toyota's such a the Kluger. Other than that an awesome review and very interesting.
Did i just see you filling 91 into patrol..gee thats disrespect. Should ve been atleast 95 vs vortex diesel. Good review though
Should get even better fuel economy & km range with 95 or 98 fuel !!
Great review
Yes thanks for being honest, Patrol for me such a price difference.
Set of air bags on the Patrol, perfect.

Great honest review. I'm thinking a set of WDH may have assisted in putting some weight back over the front wheels and removed some of that skittish steering.
Smart money is on the Patrol good video Ruben
Thanks mate. It was good to put them back to back on a test.

When travelling remote , unfortunately you cannot always get 98, so 91 made it a good all round comparison.
I’ve never paid more for unleaded over diesel in the last 3 years, at that same servo, sometimes 20cents cheaper than diesel.
probably the best review I have seen.
Regarding your questions:
Neither of the vehicles had a suspension upgrade specifically for towing.
Transmission Lockup from Wholesale Automatics.
Ring them is best before doing anything.

Picked up my Y62 last week and loving it, i Had a ram 1500 laramie but could not justify $150K for another Ram and after a week of running around I am so glad i went with the Y62, it is like driving on a cloud and fuel economy is about the same.
If it makes you happy then you chose the right one for you. :)
Until you sell it and the Cruiser is worth the original sticker but the molested Patrol will be worth half what you paid😂
@@craigdavid6668 no it's not. check now and sell me a half price 2021 Patrol and add the difference from the half price. Also, the Cruiser is very slow at a traffic light drag race.
@@jackman2865 👍.. the Tojo boys trying to justify spending WAY too much on their POS.
@@craigdavid6668 it’s call research, you should try it or maybe it might make you cry a little when you finally understand the deprecation are about the same.
@@jjwoody6532 Maybe you should jump on Carsales and do a little “research” yourself old chap………
This is super useful as I’m looking to purchase a tow vehicle
Great video mate! As a Toyota purist who now brought a patrol! Only a shame you had a Sahara against a ti!
It's great to hear you enjoyed the video! Thanks!
No need to reflash the trans, although it's an option, a TC lock-up kit make a huge difference to both towing performance and economy as well as engine braking. Well worth the investment.
It also allows you to get 6th from 95kph and hold it longer.
Hi Chris,
We would recommend you try a vehicle with a tune, we would be very surprised if you didn’t want it done once you experience the difference.
Great honest review Ruben. Now chop it stretch it and Film it.
I’d trust this blokes advice over all others. Knows his sh!t
Price is definitely one of the reasons. Thanks for watching, mate @localdrummerweb
16 litres more fuel then the LC200 or 6 litres per 100 more then the LC200
It’s not a great deal more but on a 10000 kms trip you’re talking about 600 litres $1400 remembering these patrol take either 95-98 fuel.
Interested to know the suspension setup on both cars.
Stock suspension or modified suspension? Guessing both are modified.
And if modified, what was installed.
Great review 👍
HI Matthew, both cars had air bags installed. The suspension was unmodified. Thank you :)
Thanks for that.
That's even on 91 octane! I'm sure it would do even better on some good dinosaur juice!
We are sure it would too but you can’t always get it when touring.
@@dirtymuddyweekendsnot a real test. Should have been 95RON minimum.
Also. Can always add octane booster if you want. That’s cheap
twin turbo V8 Diesel.
Great review mute ! Very well done 👍
Glad you liked it!
Why the heck did you put 91RON IN THE patrol?!
Try throwing in 95RON or above like is recommended by Nissan!
Thank you!
Real world add some head winds hills and a vehicle fitted with bullbar and roofrack and loaded. My Y62 averaged 26 LPH Carnarvon to Perth with 3.2 T offroad van.
Thanks for sharing! :)
Both are great vehicles. Just have to figure out which one's best for you. :)
Good review. 200 fuel economy would be even worse with a big canopy on the back. Would be good to see this repeated with a 300, Hilux, and Ford F-250. All 4 Adventure got good results in their economy run of their F250 vs the D-Max , only 1l/100k more.
Thanks for watching, Andrew!
Hi Brennan,
Appreciate your feedback and fair comments however 200 series owners will know it is more than just staying in the rev range, the engine has the torque but the transmission tuning was done with an emission bias rather than drive ability.
Lifted.
Both stock suspension with airbags apparently
The newer diesel has a lot more pollution crap on them the older diesels are better on fuel, lots of people have said the old Hilux was better on fuel than the newer ones same for the ranger and bt50s older ones got better fuel economy.
@@dazzalincoballance3990 nah mate, the y62 has a 2in lift. That'll be why it's feeling squirmish now and then in the test. The lift is fine but the wheel alignment must be correct or you'll have heaps off problems.
Hopefully people will still continue to buy the cruiser Sahara. Vs the patrol. While I ditch my over price Toyota years ago😁
Respect your honesty, you Aussies are very brand loyal and can be blinded by it. Well done you ;-)
The payload capacity for both is disappointing. Add a bull bar, winch, fridge and tow ball weight and you exceed your GVM. You would think these manufacturers would provide more payload as factory standard. For both vehicles you need to go through the hassle of getting a GVM upgrade.
We do our best to make GVMs hassle free for this very reason
Did I see the 200 series have air bags on it when hooking up did the Nissan have the same??? But great review bud top job
Hey Ryan, thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback. The Patrol did have bags as well. Cheers
I think the steering is so light because the back end of the Nissan sags with the heavy van on it
$30k + for a 200 vs a Y62.. How on earth are you using 3lt/100 more towing 3.5t? your unloaded trip must have had a lot more right foot.
Laughed when you said “that dash looks cool “
It’s seems to be the biggest gripe with the y62
Us old farts love it
Fantastic review the best I’ve seen
Thanks, Michael! Cheers!
well there you go, this is more than likely with the 200 series having 2006-7 technology used in all models right up to the 300 series i would reckon, the y62 has 2013 tech with variable this and that for good economy and the price of diesel as opposed to petrol ,the patrol would be a winner for me hands down, bloody glad i watched this, great vid.
Thanks for your time watching, Mick!
Should add in comments that when towing a large van / trailer that a simple solution would be to have airbags or different springs in the Y62 to fix the softness
Do the test against a fte 100 series. Could do a lot to a 100 series with the money you save from a 200.
They are excellent cars .
Not to go against you but I would love to drive them both and do a review myself as I am a big fan on both cars and see what I would prefer
I came from a HDJ100 to a y62 series 5 and no comparison in any way. Patrol is so much better in every way
The turbo diesel 100 series were gold, the petrol sixes were horrid on fuel, the petrol V8’s used fuel too but sounded good and made you smile while you did it, so you know I liked them ! Ha ha ha, I have a LC200 now and yeah it’s ok but a good 100 is still a good thing.
Great "real world" test. Thanks.
😆Patrol Y62 King of The SUV, beat the outdated & way toooo overpriceddd Toyta LC 200 easily in terms of price, performance & petrol consumption : 22 vs 29L/100km unbelievable!
Toyta fanboy have to accept this hard facts lol!
