  • This is video one of our new Knife Defense Series! Out of the last 5-6 years of my martial arts training, knife defense has always been one of my favorite topics and the element of self-defense that I probably study the most. I think I've seen just about every knife defense from every mainstream martial art. Surprise, surprise...most of them suck. Granted, knife defense is hard. It's a sucky situation no matter what and no technique is perfect which is exactly why I say there IS NO KNIFE TECHNIQUE...only principles and concepts that will hopefully be enough to help you survive and get medical attention. We're under the assumption that we will only be able to mitigate damage --- not cancel it out entirely.
I have personally pressure tested all of the knife principles that I teach (as should you). If you want to further your research I would also suggest checking Aaron Jannetti @jannettiaaron on Instagram. We shared a lot of similar views and there are still things I'm learning from him.

TO THE VIEWERS: make sure you check out the description on this video. I added a lot of good to know info that I couldn't fit in the video. There will be more knife series videos to come so make sure you subscribe and turn on notifications! You won't want to miss it. Try out these drills with a partner and let me know how it went. Knife defense is not perfect and you WILL mess up. That's ok. We weren't perfect in this video either. However, you'll be much better off than the person that doesn't train.

Both you, reality check self defence and hard2hurt uploaded kniferelated videos today, did you guys talked about that beforehand? 😅
Jokes aside, great video, I am really loking forward to this series :)

Lol. I almost thought this was a That 70's Show parody at first. Obviously wrong, but this is an awesome video nevertheless.

It is difficult to understand the difference between framing and jamming?

What do you think about kicks against an attacker with a knife?

    • @BeReadySelfDefense

Great question. I think a push kick when the attacker is entering is still a viable option, just be ready to either run like hell, draw your gun if you carry, OR engage close quarters if your kick fails. I think knees and kicks in grappling range are also fine, but only when there's an opportunity. Through pressure testing, I've learned that knife defense really comes down to grappling. Hope that helps!

Is it your expectation that a smaller woman would be able to do this against a larger guy?

Yep. Absolutely. Train train train. Drill drill drill. Size will always play a factor, but we adapt as much as possible.
I would also add...in what situation is a gigantic male even needing to use a knife to attack a tiny woman? Why do they even need the advantage at that point? We can't account for every scenario.
