EQ 006 - How do EVs heat the cabin in winter? Heat pump, or not?

  • If you ever wondered how an electric car creates heat for the cabin in the winter, then this video should be of interest to you. Is it worth having a heat pump in an electric car? What is a PTC Heater? There are three general types of heating in an electric car and in this video I give a brief overview of all three, and give examples of some of the EVs that use them.

    Congrats on the 10,000! My Niro EV has the heat pump. I cannot tell what range I would get in the winter without one, but I register a very acceptable loss of range between summer and winter (taking into account that winter days rarely go under -10°C where I live). I get about 450 km in the summer and 360-380 km in the winter (mixed driving conditions). Most of the time in Eco.

      You get excellent range with your Niro EV! It really depends on driving style, road conditions, temperature, as well as highway versus city though. I usually get 400km summer and 300km winter, but I do like sport mode ;-)

    Good to have you back in action❤️ A couple of questions related to the Niro EV heating:
    1. There’s a winter mode option in Niro EV console settings, does it play any role in activating the heat pump to keep the battery warm? I never really understood it’s purpose as there is literally no documentation available to see what that mode is about. The manual’s wordings seems very vague.
    2. When I turn on the cabin heat, the system always turn on the AC and Heat at the same time. I have the auto(dehumidify/defog) settings disabled and set the heat on manual.
    Is that a normal operation with heat?
    3. Plus with heat on, I never get an option to recirculate the cabin air as it seems to be disabled when heat is on. As if it wants to get the fresh air in to heat the cabin. Only downside is you get other cars gas exhaust fumes if driving behind a diesel hogger; cigarette smoke in the cabin while parked and someone smoking a cigarette nearby.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you.
      1) The heat pump is only for the HVAC system and has nothing to do with the battery heater that is part of the Winter Mode option. The battery heater will activate at an unspecified low temperature (Kia never answered my questions), but from what I have read it only happens with the car is plugged in. You can leave Winter Mode active all year round as it is temperature dependant.
      2) If the AC is coming on at the same time as the heat, like mine does, then you have not actually disabled the auto-dehumidify option. Double check to make sure it really is off. I leave it active as it is very convenient to keep fog off of the windows and has no negative impact on the car.
      3) When I set the HVAC to heat, I use Auto, but if I press the recirculate button on the right knob, the light turns on and the system recirculates air. Yours should do the same even though mine is a 2019. One thing to note, recirculate should only be used for short periods of time when it is cold, or raining a lot, or you will have an accumulation of humidity on the windows making visibility more difficult. I use recirculate when I drive through a tunnel, or follow a disgusting diesel.

    I believe I read up on the Niro heat pump and found that they made a couple of design decisions to make it more effective than some others. I believe it draws air from inside the car and also circulates it over the battery's cooling fluid to recapture some of the waste heat from the batteries.
    Great video!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct, Kia and Hyundai heat pumps are very efficient, scavenging waste heat from the inverter and battery to heat the cabin in the winter. This does, however, cause an issue in the winter when heading to a DC Fast Charging station to charge since the battery is cooled down by the heat pump, reducing the efficiency of charging in cold weather. To resolve this they need to add battery preconditioning, which is simply a software update away. The nice thing is that Genesis has this option for the GV60, which means that it could easily be added the Ioniq 5 and EV6, which I really hope they do.

    Thanks for the video, do you think having an awd on an ev makes a good difference here in canada considering the snow here in the south

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regardless of the fuel, gas or electric, an AWD vehicle will always perform better than a RWD or FWD vehicle in the snow. The question is, do you really need it? I have never owned an AWD vehicle and live in the Montréal area, in the province of Québec, where we can receive a lot of snow and it can get very cold, yet I have never had a probem. My Niro EV is FWD and I have excellent winter tires, so I never have issues in the snow. If I lived in the country, or where there are lots of steep hills, then I would want an AWD with excellent winter tires, and maybe even studded winter tires, but since I live in a more urban area my FWD Niro EV is more than fine in the winter, it is actually great. Another thing to consider is that EVs are heavy because of the large batteries they carry around, so traction in the snow and ride comfort are generally excellent. Essentially you need to make your choice based on your daily drive environment, then based on personal preference. I hope this helps.

    Now, a quibble: my 2020 SX Touring is apparently equipped with a heat pump, as is the current EX+ and SX Touring trims. Was that new in the 2020 model year? Either way, even during our recent deep freeze, I've always been happy with how warm I was.

      My 2019 Niro EV has a heat pump, as shown in the video, but it was only in the SX Touring top trim for 2019 and 2020. So then a question for you - I am 5 months into owning my Niro EV with a heat pump, and I love it. I am interested in getting my second EV soon for my wife, and I have my eyes in the Kona EV - mainly because it is a lot cheaper. But here in the US it does NOT have an option for a heat pump (I have no idea why). We are in NY with really cold winters, and good hot summers. How much of a deal breaker do think it really is to not have a heat pump?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it depends on a few factors and what you can live with. Do you park outside all of the time? Will you regularly drive long distances in cold weather (about -10C or colder)? If you park outside all of the time, but only drive an occasional long distance trip, then I would say it is not a big deal to not have a heat pump. If the car parks inside all of the time and you occasionally drive long distance trips, then I would also say it is no big deal. If you park outside all of the time and drive long trips on a regular basis, then I would say that getting a car with a heat pump is probably a good idea. But you have to consider that it is also a question of whether you can live with the reduced range as compared to an equivalent with the heat pump. My Niro EV loses about 25% range in the winter. What would be the loss without a heat pump? I am not sure, but I would say that even if it is up to 35% then you know what you are getting into regardless, and you buy based on the range and your daily use, not the fact that it has a heat pump or not.

    Using my JuiceNet 40 Pro, it takes about 2.5 kW parked with exterior about 25 F and interior 75 F. But only about 1.5 kW when the interior is set to 65 F augmented by seat heaters.

    Hi, I am the owner of the eNiro 64kWh without a heat pump. Do you have any idea how to preheat the battery before it is even connected to charging? Or before a trip on frosty days when I charge in the garage from 230V or 400V 3F (Poland)? I know, of course, that there was a petition to KIA to add a button that starts heating the battery while driving before charging, but it probably did not help ...

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just an FYI, the heat pump is only used for the cabin heating and air conditioning, it is not related to the battery heater. To be able to heat the battery you car must have the Winter Mode option in the EV settings of the touchscreen; this will confirm if your car has the battery heater option or not. With that being said, there is no way to precondition the battery before you get to a rapid charger. Also to note, the battery heater (Winter Mode) will only activate when the car is plugged in and charging. As you mentioned there is a petition (I signed it) to get the preconditioning option added to the e-Niro, but unfortunately I don't think Kia will do anything about it. It seems they might add it to the EV6 and Ioniq 5 since it seems the Genesis GV60 will get the feature.
      If your car is at home in your garage to charge on 240V, then I would suggest heating the garage to 15C to keep the battery warm to ensure you get more range, or make sure your have Winter Mode activated all of the time. There is no need to turn it off because it has no effect in warmer weather. Also to note, if you use the Kia Connect (UVO) app to change the desired charge level, there is a bug that deactivates Winter Mode so you have to reactivate it when you get in the car. This only happens when you use the app to change the max charge level.
      I hope this helps.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the EV has a heat pump, depending on the EV, it can work with the AC system making it more efficient to cool the car in the summer. You can also have an EV that has no heat pump, but has AC. They are separate units that can work together.

    • @berntnilsson1538
      @berntnilsson1538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EV-olution Maybe clarify a bit? A/C units are heat pumps. I did think that the units in cars work in the same way as house units work. They use the same compressor, inside and outside air to gas/liquid condenser and evaporator. They have a valve that reverse inside and outside when heating instead of cooling. And probably an electric de-icing element in the outside unit when in heating mode. In cars with only A/C they make it a bit cheaper by not adding the valve. Its also possible that the gas has to be different to be used for both cooling and heating. Maybe I misunderstood your comment that they are separate units? I will try to remember to ask the workshop next week when they replace the compressor in our e-Niro. 😊

    In the UK I have the MY2022 2 Long Range 64kWh and it doesn't have the heat pump. This is my 5th EV and the winter efficiency of this car is poor, losing on average 30 mile with the heating on 20°C and when it was below 0°C, I saw an initial 50 mile range difference. Just as well it has a large battery to compensate. I think the heat pump should be standard but I'm to believe that the Hyundai Group on some EV models now want £1100 to fit one and is only a factory build option.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering the small amount of money that Kia charges for the option in some markets, I agree, they should just make is standard. With that being said, when you say your car loses 30 miles of range when you use the heating, have you driven a full charge on a long trip to calculate the 30 miles, or is it what the GOM indicates when you turn on the heat? The GOM calculates range based on the power drain at the moment, and the PTC heater draws a lot of power at first while heating up. Once the temperature has been achieved the power draw from the heater is less and has less of an impact.

    • @colinphillipson4830
      @colinphillipson4830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EV-olution Yes, it's the Instant power drain when using the most energy and as the cabin heats it obviously decreases but still quite a difference. With a Heat pump car I only ever saw 10-15 mile instant range reduction in similar cold conditions. If it could be an option I would have the heat pump retro fitted.
      This 2LR car was created at £34950 in the UK to take advantage of the then Government grant of £2500 for cars below £35000, so they removed severl items to give the 64kWh battery. Having the heat pump would of taken it over the then threshold. The grant is now only £1500 and a only for cars valued under £32000. Thanks.

      Just so you have a direct comparison, my 2019 Niro EV has a heat pump. This morning when it was -15C my car was plugged in, but not charging as it had reached 90%, the GOM in the Kia Connect app indicated 318km of range, but when I activated the heater using the app the GOM range dropped to 256km. This is normal, regardless of whether the Niro EV has a heat pump or not. The important thing is that once the car achieved the desired temperature, not very long after, the range went back up to just below 300km. The initial power draw of the PTC heater is very high, which is one of the benefits of a PTC heater because it is able to heat up quickly, but it then throttles back the power draw as the temperature is reached.

I also know that it is not the experience of many other EV owners. It's important to note that the initial heating of the cabin is what "costs" the most power but once at temperature the heating costs very little. Another tip is to preheat the cabin while the car is plugged in at the house if it is very cold. I do this when it is -25C and colder, otherwise I just preheat and take the power hit because over 300km of winter range is more than enough for daily use.

    One thing that should happen to anyone that owns an EV...They should be made to put their credit card into the charging station and pay for the electric they use to recharge their batteries! Once they got their first credit card bill, they'd drop EV's in a heart beat...Sad when we are forced by default to help subsidize the 'fuel" for EV owners, but they don't offer to help pay for my fuel at the local station!..Only sweet smile I get is knowing I can find fuel most anywhere and not have to plan my day, week, or vacation around the location of a charging station...Not to mention I can fuel up in less than 15 minutes, arriving at my destinations long before the EV has unplugged from the charger!! :-) .The only worthwhile EV's are golf carts and wheelchairs..!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It is a shame that you have been given incorrect information about how EVs and EV charging works. Every EV owner pays for their charging sessions and the electricity they use. It is not always directly with a credit card on the station. Most of the time you use an app that has your credit card in it, and you load your account with a dollar value that you want to use to charge, and it is taken from your credit card.
      With that being said, 90% of the time an EV owner does not need to use public charging stations because we can simply plug in the car at home, and as far as I can tell no utility company is giving electricity for free, we pay for what we use. “Filling up” my EV at home costs about 7$ and nobody is subsidizing the electricity use.
      What I can tell you is that the US government heavily subsidizes the gas and oil industry, so you don’t need EV owners paying for what you fill your gas car with. Conservative estimates put U.S. direct subsidies to the fossil fuel industry at roughly $20 billion per year; with 20 percent currently allocated to coal and 80 percent to natural gas and crude oil. Here is one of many references: www.eesi.org/papers/view/fact-sheet-fossil-fuel-subsidies-a-closer-look-at-tax-breaks-and-societal-costs
      With that in mind, the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program established by President Biden, will provide nearly $5 billion over five years. Which means that the annual subsidies to help create a bigger charging network for EVs in the US is less than 5% of what the US puts into oil every year, and has been doing so for decades. And the NEVI program is for charging stations, not the electricity we use. EV owners don’t see a single penny, we just get to use the charging stations that will get deployed, meaning that over time long trips will require less planning.
      On a related note, I have not had to spend those 15 minutes that you mentioned, filling up with gas, for 4 years now. How many times per week are you spending those 15 minutes? How many hours per month, or per year does that add up to? And how many thousands of dollars of gas are you spending annually?
      Not only do you save time and money with an EV, you help reduce the pollution you put into the atmosphere, helping fight climate change, so your children can have a planet to live on. If I had to choose between a golf cart or a gas car, I would take the electric golf cart if it meant leaving a healthy planet for my kids.
