    This is my favorite of your videos so far. I followed your directions last night and set up the phone and Torque, then today my ODB reader arrived. Works like a charm. Not going to lie, I immediately went to SOH ... 100% :-) That made me happy! Still setting things up, but this is an awesome tool, especially for monitoring all the battery cells. Thanks again for doing these.

    So pleased to have found your informative video on reading the Kia Niro EV diagnostic data. Having purchased a year old vehicle I was concerned about the battery health. (Wrong way round I know!) I followed the steps in your video and even though I am not familiar with the Android operating system I had Torque Pro up and running on my car in about an hour. I bought a cheap Android phone and with rest of the bits including Apps it cost me about £70, which is a small price to pay to know what is actually happening in the 'hidden depths' of the Kia. And the good news is that my battery is in a excellent state of health, even though its a year old! Thank you for putting all this information together.

    Andre, your timing is impeccable! My ScanTool OBDLink LX Bluetooth is arriving today and I just downloaded Torque Pro. I just went over 1,500 miles on my 2019 Niro EV and have been itching for more technical detail about this marvel. I'll be watching this video several more times to absorb all of the details provided by this interesting episode. Thank you.

      I am glad I could help and happy you like the video. I made it over this past week because someone on Facebook suggested Torque Pro, but offered no explanation. I can read, I am technical, but I am more visual and prefer seeing it done so I figured others would like a video as much as I would have loved to have one when I installed it last week. @@EV-olution sounds like a plan. I'm hopefully buying a 2021 Kia niro ev next week and this setup will help me look at the batter and stuff before I buy so this still has a bunch of value. Once purchased I'll probably switch over to the EVOBD2 in your other video. Also, have you looked into the comma 3 with openpilot? It's one of the main reasons I'm going with the Kia niro ev. It should work stock with your old niro ev, but as the ev6 is so new it requires a bit more fiddling and hardware.

      @EV-olution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@flyordieinafire I am familiar with the openpilot solution, but it is not something I would do while the car has full warranty. Also, I sold my Niro EV earlier this year and bought the Kia EV6.

    Key question... the hard copy key inserted in the fob... can you actually start the Niro Ev 2019 with it and where is the key insert? It seem that this key is only to open the door? I had a Jeep Cherokee that had the key insert in the mid console... I am not seeing such an option and I cannot find more info... Do you happen to know this? Thank you, very informative video!

    I have just purchased a 2020 Niro EV SX Touring with only 25,000 km on it . I have had a 2015 Leaf for over 3 years and have been using Leaf Spy Pro, so I was hoping something similar was available for the Niro. Once I get Torque Pro set up, the first thing I will look at is the SOH. I am sure it's pretty good because the guessometer shows over 400 km on a full charge, but it will be reassuring to have the SOH confirmed. Thanks very much for making the video!

    Interesting video as I am about to take delivery of a brand new Niro EV. However I have an iPhone and I could not locate the PID extension app in the Ap Store. Am I missing it? or is there an equivalent that also works? Or is there now an OBD available for the newer elctric cars that requirs less tweaking?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no iPhone version of TorquePro, but since I made this video a couple of years ago, there are easier options today. You can find newer apps that support the Niro EV automatically, like Car Scanner. I also have another video after this one, where I show a fully plug & play device that you can use without needing your cell phone. It's called EVOBD2.

    Very interesting as all your videos. I have just recieved the 2020 Eniro 4 in UK and ended up using the car scanner app as it was useable immediately without importing PIDs. In my car you cannot just put the OBD2 device in the plug as it is under the fusebox cover which then won't shut so I had to buy an OBD11 extension cable so that the cover would fit on

      @@EV-olution Thanks, yes very happy with car, ha only issue is that I cant use the Evo app because I live in a remote area and there is no mobile signal which is a shame, hence the desire to get the ODBC readouts. Super vids you do! I've used the Torque Pro before on an ICE car. It's brilliant. A question you or your viewers may be able to answer-I'm taking delivery of the eNiro 2 64kW soon, therefore will not have access to the UVO app, but I would like to be able to pre-heat the car before entry. Is there another app which could do this?

      1) Program the schedules and HVAC on the car's touchscreen so it is ready for when you leave 7 days a week.
      2) Get the OVMS device that works similarly to UVO.

    Interesting! I didn't know Torx Pro could be useful for EVs too. Will try this when I get my e-Niro.
    Request for a future app review: EVNotify. This uses a spare phone or even Raspberry Pi connected to the dongle to remotely monitor the car. (But perhaps Canadian Niros already come with a Kia app? Then this wouldn't be so useful. We're not so lucky though.)

    Is there a possibility to see charging history somehow? I'd like to follow my charging costs with more convenient way. Following it now manually is too cumbersome because I have to approximate and calculate it from car percentage.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Niro EV does not have a way of showing history of power used for charging, only how much power was used for past trips. The Torque pro app also does not show charge history. In another video about the EVOBD2 module you can see how much power was used during charging sessions, but there is no breakdown, only an accumulation that can be reset. The easiest way to track charging history is to use a smart charging station, like my Flo X5 shown in a video I made about home charging. I use the e-mailed reports of charging sessions to be able to deduct charging cost in company expenses. I hope this helps.

  • @uproid
    @uproid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm going to give this a try, but I am concerned about the effect on the 12V aux battery. You have said that the VEEPEAK dongle has never caused you any problems with your 12V aux battery, but in another video you said you were constantly having problems with your manufacturer supplied 12V battery. Do you think that might have been partly caused by the ODB2 dongle?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a dual dashcam set up that runs 24/7. Prior to installing the dashcam, like when I made this video, I never had 12V drain issues. The problem I encountered was adding a constant pull on the 12V battery, even of it is not a large power draw, the dashcams revealed a weakness in the 12V battery as well as the software that maintains the 12V charge level. The 2020 and newer Niro EV are supposed to have an updated software that improves 12V maintenance. I hope this clarifies things a bit.

    • @uproid
      @uproid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EV-olution Thanks. I have the 2020 model which I have updated the software to the latest, so hopefully will be ok. I went ahead and fitted the CAN dongle, and I have been using it successfully with the Car Scanner app - which works nicely. I have the 12V battery status on the dashboard in the app. So far no issues.

    What is your battery SOH and how long do you have Niro EV ? I have a Leaf with 10K miles and I have SOH at 94% . I'm looking to buy a Niro EV later this year and I'm curious what kind of battery degradation should I expect.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Leaf has no thermal management of the battery so it has very bad battery degradation. The Niro EV, and most others, have liquid thermal management of the battery. My car is still at 100% SoH with about 19,000km. You won't have to worry about it with a Niro.

      Did you use the correct PID files from the Jeju site? If yes, then it is possible that your OBD2 adapter is not compatible, but that is a wild guess without knowing what is going on with your setup. The best place to get help would be directly in the Github page, under the Issues section. If you post your question there the person who made the PIDs will reply, I see he has replied to others. Hi, I am happy I found your channel and subscribed. I own the same car in Ukraine and enjoy learning new features from you. • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for subscribing; I am glad my videos are helpful for you. I have not considered unlocking the extra battery capacity for a few reasons:
      1) Doing that would void the warranty which is 8 years and 160,000km in Canada.
      2) The extra buffer is there to help keep the battery healthy. If there was no buffer, the degradation would be higher. My battery still has 100% state of health after 2.5 year and 55,000km, meaning that my useable 64kWh is still 64. Any small degradation has occurred in the buffer.
      3) The extra few kW would not make any difference in day to day use, so the negative points above far outweigh any benefit.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Niro EV and Kona Electric both can suffer from a problem that stems from the motor. Many dealers here in North America have changed reduction gears thinking it is the issue, but in Europe it is well known that the issue comes from the motor. A new motor design was released and seems to solve the issue. This is all based on forums I have been part of where many users have posted the results of repairs over time, in Europe, and the new motor that is used seems to have a different design. Luckily my car has not had the "card in spokes" noise issue and I have over 18,000km.

      Congratulations on your new Niro EV. There is no way of knowing how much range you can get after teh car indicates zero because it will be different for each driver since it is based on driving habits, temperature, weather, etc. Also, this should not happen very often in most scenarios. I have driven very long trips in mine and never drove below 10% since you can plan for charging stops pretty easily with apps like PlugShare and ABRP.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much, I hope you like my other videos, I have lots of them about the Niro EV. Regarding the GOM and what you had before and after the reset... The car learns your driving and calculates based on real power use, as well as temperature, etc. That mileage, even if it is lower, is fairly accurate. A reset of the computer only erases the history and the car guesses based on a theoretical maximum range, this is in no way real mileage available. This is why you will see the available range increase in the spring, since the battery has better efficiency in warmer weather than in the winter, and vice versa in the fall.

    All rechargeable cells have a nominal voltage that is quoted but in practice the terminal voltage varies with state of charge. A lithium cell would have a nominal voltage of around 3.6 or 3.7V and a fully charged voltage of 4.2V.
    356 divided by 98 cells is 3.633V.
    98 cells times 4.2V is 411.6V.
    Assuming they're all connected in series, docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-9jZafV9eZeBUnPQo7qQHbX2-_4qZfWfRVpidoF1owA/edit#gid=660740603 implies they are.
    The Kia specs say 294 cells which means the battery must be configured as 98S3P, that is 98 series connected groups of 3 cells connected in parallel.
    Series connection increases the voltage, they sum together. Parallel connection increases the capacity (again summing) while keeping the same terminal voltage.
