    In badminton doubles, the serve is the most important part of the rally. Specifically you should be using a backhand low serve to fight for the first chance to attack. A bad serve will always be punished, and you can easily lose the point off it.

    Some commentators have mentioned this serve is a bit borderline in terms of height, and looking back I agree. I was focused on demonstrating the perfect shuttle path on camera, I ended up serving a bit higher than normal. I don't think you'd get called on a service fault in general play, but of course adjust as necessary!

      Hi, I like your videos but I agree with the other commentators. You are quite tall and serving at armpit level. Even under the old serve rules it would be high. I hope you clarify this properly as it may give beginners the wrong idea.

    Excellent video with sound advice for improving the backhand low serve. Was your serve borderline... maybe, but all professional players will push the laws governing the serve to their limit (just see how frequently pro players are picked up for an unlawful high serving action). Two critical badminton laws that might have been worth mentioning are that the racket head must be at a 'discernible downward angle to the racket handle' and that the first forward movement of the racket head toward the shuttle is deemed to be the start of the serving action and that the laws of badminton require the serving action to be a single, unbroken movement. As such it is technically possible to fault a player for moving their racket backwards and forwards toward the shuttle prior to hitting the shuttle. This is why you will see some players hold the shuttle behind their back until they are completely set up to serve.

    • @davidh4557
      @davidh4557 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for adding your comment and providing the laws regarding a legal serve. You were being rather generous in saying his serve was borderline. If you pause the video, there are several times when he makes contact with the shuttle to serve and the contact is clearly too high. Unfortunate.

    • @jackburtonstwin
      @jackburtonstwin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidh4557 I agree, a professional, world class player should be pulled for that serve. Generally, at a lower standard, the question I ask myself when umpiring is - Does this player gain an clear advantage from this serve? If the answer is "yes" then it should be faulted, if the answer is "no discernable benefit" then I might let it pass for the sake of not "breaking" the game.

      115cm is rule, the net is 155cm high, and he serve at the midle of hit. The net itself is 75cm high, so if you serve at the midle height of it, you serve at 155-(75/2)= 117.5cm. A bit high. but not much, so with the angle of camera, it wasn't possible to be precise, but he is around the limit max. Not so high. :) Just 5cm too high, I think it was because he focused on the move more.

      @@urnothing_2084 Shuttlecock is to be held below 115cm from floor at moment of release from 1st March 2018. It does appear that he is holding it above 115 as he's not far below the 155cm net height but that could be a visual trick and he could be a shorty. (Rationality tells me that a badminton coach knows how to serve legally.) When the new law was announced some of the gun players complained and ridiculed the rule.

  • @MusicbyMaggie

    Wait, you cant do a forehand low serve? Why tho?😅

    • @Ztormrageheero
      @Ztormrageheero 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Magna M.St. more time in the air and easier to attack.
      Plus the shuttle would still drop a little, so randomisation in your serve can happen

      Ztormrageheero Oh, Thanks! 😅 For a moment I thought there was actually a bwf rule against it!😅

      Magna M.St. Not a problem. There is one particular player I play against in my club and he always does a forehand serve and the shuttle falls atleast 8cm from his hand to the racquet. Don't be like him :)

    serve is the ONLY shot we can control. In the aspect of a game, missing serves becomes a big deal. You may as well forfeit the game if you can't serve.

    • @rayawira
      @rayawira 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have a point. But serve in badminton doesn't affect the game as much as the serve in other sports, say tennis or volley ball. It's important but i wouldn't say "forfeit the game". We could still have some fun even when we don't know how to serve properly.

    • @tayonguyen
      @tayonguyen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anang Sulistyono you’re talking about having fun and if you don’t care as much, you can allow to miss. I was referring for players who compete, and that quality serve matters too, at certain level, advanced receivers can rush or fake your return serves.

    • @rayawira
      @rayawira 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tayonguyen Players who compete doesn't need to watch this video. They already know how to serve.

    • @tayonguyen
      @tayonguyen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anang Sulistyono you’d be surprised, all levels can compete, even the elite make unforced errors on serves when under pressure . Serves may look easy and silly but can’t be taken for granted. Since badminton became a 21 pts system, all unforced errors is a giveaway pts, including missing a serve. There’s no more “2nd serve” to account the service mistakes like we had with 15pts system. So i kinda disagree with your statement “serve in badminton doesn’t affect as much”

    • @achi.321
      @achi.321 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      tayonguyen his point is "its important but i wouldnt say "forfeit the game"". Why on earth compete players watch this video, even kevin sanjaya said, every players know how to flick serve. lol
