I was playing badminton league for 17 years and After 5 years of not playing badminton I have finally got back in too it and my power is back but just need too focus on my footwork and improve my fitness. Keep doing the videos they are great I have watched loads.
Made a similar comment on a different video but this serve is really interesting. I live in Japan and work in one of the best highschools for badminton in the country and I talked to the coach about it. Apparently over 3 years ago a high school team here used this serve in an all Japan highschool competition and it did not go down well. In Japan, this serve is very famous and since the competition 3 years ago, every highschool competition has an agreement between coaches stating the serve cannot be used. People in Japan use this serve as a joke sometimes, even in very casual play!
👎Like Greg said, this will become the only viable serving option if left unbanned, and it creates a very unfun playing and viewing experience for everyone involved
This is similar to table tennis. You used to be able to hold the balls by your fingers, but they changed it to having it on an open palm because you could put spin on the ball with your fingers, making your serve much harder to return.
I don't think that they'll add a new rule regarding serves because serving has already had its own category in BWF'S rulebook. (Take women's singles for example, almost everyone do the high serve) What is most likely to happen though, is them adding two separate serving category (low and high serve aka forehand and backhand serve) and then build the rule from then onwards.
I thought you already had to hold it there. If anyone starts doing this serve, I'm just going to concede the game, I've got no time for nonsense. I'd rather go and do something else. 😑
Badminton is stale as all hell with little getting added to it shot and strategy wise. Killing this off when you can do underarm and pancake serves in tennis is just so boring it hurts
Another great video I am so old I remember playing the spin serve hitting feathers first, it made world class players look like beginners. Probably need a rule change sooner rather than later
Not exactly sure who was the first to use this serve but the earliest instance I found of someone using it was in the Australian open 2022 by none other than Choi himself! Here’s a link to that match and he first uses it at 5:37:15 : th-cam.com/users/liveFcNqOsvlbng?feature=share Liu Yuchen gets super confused by it and even calls the tournament referee over but play continues. Seems to me Choi practiced the serve a lot and then pulled it out later when he got more comfortable using it. Cool how you guys were able to get the serve rather consistent in a short amount of time though! I’ve tried it for several hours and gotten mixed results 😂
Wow this is very interesting 😱 We can't believe it was done so many months ago and it's taken this long for the serve to 'catch on'! Thanks for sharing Tim!
I would like to see it be in use for a while and then get a deepdive on what effects it has had on the matches....not saying it is the case this time, but often new things are banned before players can solve the issue...Will be an intersting topic to follow for sure. Thanks! PS! I was kindda hoping that lefties might do a right handed serve and then swap hands....theat would have made the serve even more crazy 🤣
It was first used - and subsequently banned - in 1982. The Sidek brothers (All England doubles champions) used it that year. I came upon it when playing/ training with and against them in Kuala Lumpur at the end of 1981.
No. The S-serve hits the feathers first. This is about generating the shuttle spin before hitting the cork. The BWF extended ban on this Spin Serve has not yet been made permanent, as I understand it.
Love u guys’ content as always, keep up the great work. I am wondering is it possible to make a video about hand placement on grip ? For example, high grip placement around the boost cap area is better for fast flat exchange. Hopefully that make sense
I have been using this serve for past 2 weeks incl at a match. My observation is that you need to practice spinning and releasing the shuttle first such that it lands perfectly down (instead of flying off sideways where your racquet completely misses it). Once you get the release correct, rest is easy
As with most rules, it can be enforced at professional tournaments, but never at casual socials, so huge opening for its use at socials, as many players don't serve legally anyway but noone can stop them....
Yeah, I play against people who don't serve in one continuous motion. They move racket forward, then back, then forward to hit the shuttle to serve. There are some other tatics. They don't realize they are so focused on cheating that their serves are easy to return. The same guy will do a net shot, then stick up his racket, waving it, to do a volleyball or basketball style block. He is doing it to be cheeky; not to protect himself. One day, someone is going swing a racket (he is blocking the follow-through) into his racket or hit him in the face (too close to net).
It's literally ONE STEP to stop it at any event. Put up the badminton rules on your phone and show it's banned.... If the rules don't matter at the casual event, then why not just run at the net during your serve and throw the bird on the floor. No Rules! I Win!
This is gonna be like the Sidek Serve all over again 😂😂 Thanks for the tutorial though, who would've thought to make the shuttlecock spin at a different rotation before hitting it would make it a game changer
oooohhh i’m sat in my local pub watching this already practicing the finger motions - i’ll get home later and give it a go drunk in my garden before my weekly games 😂
Hi Grey and Jenny, just wondering is it possible if you guys could make a video on what you think about during a badminton match? I always hear my coach telling me to play more intelligently rather than just reacting to the opponents shot.
I've always held the shuttle just above the cork with the feathers pointing away from me, I find that a very effective way to serve for me at least. As much as I appreciate the skill involved with this new serve, I'd hate to see a rule applied where the holding of the shuttle by the cork was disallowed. Might give this a bit of practice though to see if I can give it a spin! ;)
Hi Guys, that's a very interesting way to serve, I will certainly be practicing this serve and trying to perfect it before a match I have on Thursday 😬
Hi, I wanted to ask your advice on this. Can you pls make a video or advice me about how to stop my racket sound at top instead of making a sound like wuss from top to shoulder length it’s sound like pulling down even tho i’m using both shoulder, forearm and wrist. Is it correct or the sound only should be at top and there should be no sound like top to shoulder sound?
I want to tell you guys who create this serve, but i know you guys will blame me. This serve call "S Serve" Created by Misbun Sidek. He won Thomas Cup for Malaysia. I forgot what the year is it. The S Serve is name by his dad "Sidek".but later, this serve is banned in any cup
I don’t think this serve should gain traction, but at the same time, I never learned how to serve properly while holding the feathers 😂 I’m only able to serve “properly” (= not hitting it way too high over the net) when holding it by the cork, haha. If it does get banned, I’ll have to spend days learning the proper serving technique 😅
Can you elaborate on why you found little reward in the "conventional" spin serve (as demonstrated so well by Marvin Seidel)? Greg seemed to be getting pretty good at it in that video. Did you find it too inconsistent, too difficult to generate sufficient spin etc.?
I think he means the amount of effort you put into learning it compared to the amount of spin you get. You need to practise the conventional spin serve a lot while this one is relatively easy to learn with lots of spin
Expected. The under the table serve in ping pong was banned as well. Anything that comes off as an exploit is likely to be banned. Just like the offside trick in football.
Reminds me of F1 cars. Technology -> restriction, new technology -> restricted again. I must admit that the height rule for service is a big step forward. The 'not hit the feathers first' has come for the same reason as this way of serving = unpredictable trajectory. But I think it won't take long before there will come a counter to this. Maybe it's impossible to flick or if you see them holding the cork you might already know what's coming.
Can you make a video that why is Tai Tzu Ying is so good as you made of victor , it will be very helpful . By the way Thank you for the easiest tutorial for the spin serve.
I'm in between with the "holding the shuttle only by the feathers" rule because it will require people to relearn the forehand serve. People hold the shuttle either at the bottom of the feather and/or the top of the cork. It's very debatable whether people are or aren't touching the cork. But until then, let's just try this serve hahaha
This looks like a good one to practise at Summer club 😁 I swear I had a lady do something like this against me...except she could do it forehand - I've never pushed so many returns in the net or out the sides!
Thanks for the Video Grenny ♥ I hope they will make a rule against this kinds of out of raquet impact . You should not be allowed to spin the shuttle before hitting. Its like playing with your hand before you hit the shuttle in the middle of the ralley and this is not allowed aswell for a good reason.👎
"Its like playing with your hand before you hit the shuttle in the middle of the ralley" What do you mean? That it's like hitting the shuttle with your hand, then hitting it with the racquet in the middle of a rally?
@@TheDreamLeaf yes. Its like stop the shuttle with your hand and play on within the rally. But this is just my opinion: Its ok to spin the shuttle with your raquet but not with your fingers.
@@TheDreamLeafAre you allowed to play the shuttle with your hand during a rally? If not, why would you be allowed to play the shuttle with your hand at the start of a rally?
@@bobminor1141 Because "serving" and "in the middle of a rally" are 2 completely different things? I'm genuinely confused. I feel your sentence is like saying we shouldn't be allowed to touch the shuttle with our hand when serving, because we can't touch the shuttle with our hand in the middle of the rally. It's illogical to me
The first forward movement of the racket is the start of the serve. Putting spin on the shuttle as the racket moves forward is akin to playing the shuttle with your fingers. It should be a fault every time under the rules of the game as they exist already.
Right, but many players would lift/release the shuttle with the left hand after a forward motion anyway. No rule says you must have already let go of the shuttle at the start of service.
1:55 They say you have to turn it "Anti-Clockwise". And even show an anti clockwise symbol. But if you hold and flick it like they show it, the shuttle turns clockwise (While seen from the top: but thats the way you hold and look at it when serving. And also how you look at it when returning). Or am I mistaken?
Hello Badminton Insight, I am living in Suzhou (the place for this year's Sudirman Cup for badminton), I was wondering if you will participate, as I have been your fan for a long time, and I would love to see you in real person and see you play. :)
I like this serve it makes the game even more fun to watch. At least in Tennis when it is just serve they need to hit the ball 200+km/h. It reminds me the spaghetti racquet that was making the ball to spin in all directions.
Standard answer: it depends! 🙂 If you have big hands and feel a bigger grip would help you, then go ahead and double grip it. I find a double gripped racquet too thick, so I have a 50% overlap owitha single grip to pad it out a bit more, but not too much. Supplied grips on new racquet are often not very good anyway, so you might try a variety to see which you get on with best. I'm a Karakal PU Super Grip guy, personally. Good luck!
The holding the shuttle by the feather/plastic flap, if it gets putting in the rule book, should only be limited to backhand services. You hold the shuttle in your hand doing a full swing underhand service.
Several people where I play are serving by hitting the bird while firmly holding it in order to cause the shuttle to wobble and be difficult to return. ChatGPT says “You must release the shuttle before hitting it with your racket during a serve. While the rules do not explicitly state you must release the shuttlecock before hitting it, Badminton World Federation Rule 9.1.2 states the server's racket must hit the base of the shuttle so releasing the shuttle before striking ensures this rule is followed and BWF Rule 9.1.7 continuous forward motion requirement implies the shuttlecock should be released to permit striking in one fluid motion without pause. The consensus among players and coaches is the shuttle should be in motion to ensure a fair serve.” Who is right? Thanks.
I understand your reservations about preventing rallies, which is fair comment, but surely with this being new is what's causing the advantage and over time how to play it to your advantage will improve so as not to make it so much of an advantage? It looks a tricky serve to master anyway so how effective this would be I'm not so sure, so I think instead of just banning it outright it should be looked at, as I think it is difficult enough winning points on serve as it is without making it harder. I'm also wondering if you could do the same serve holding the feathers (not as easy and possibly effective, but maybe possible), I like the thought of the server having another serve type to throw off the returner. I think we should see how it goes before banning it.
I'm a little confused, is the shuttle spinning clockwise or anticlockwise? From the finger position and slowing down the video for the right-handed demo, it looks like it's going clockwise but I can't seem to tell for sure
Wasn't there a similar serve in the past where someone struck the base and feathers at the same time making the shuttle spin? That caused a rule change, I think this will too. But I'm looking forward to trying it 8-).
9.1.5. the server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle; Experimental Variation in effective 12-29 May 2023 for BWF sanctioned tournaments: the server shall release the shuttle without adding spin, and the server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle; @Badminton insight
The best racquet is the one you can play well with! Not necessarily the newest, or most expensive, or lightest, etc. Most important is the grip size and the balance that suits you (head heavy, light or even).

Would this serve work w/ a plastic shuttle?
After 2 day of practice , I'm gettin the hang of it.
Nice! 👍🏼
The consensus among players and coaches is the shuttle should be in motion to ensure a fair serve.”
Who is right? Thanks.
I can't seem to save your videos to my playlist or share them. Why is that?
Looking at the cork end it's definitely going anti-clockwise - you're spinning the bottom of the cork from left to right.
Wasn't there a similar serve in the past where someone struck the base and feathers at the same time making the shuttle spin? That caused a rule change, I think this will too. But I'm looking forward to trying it 8-).

9.1.5. the server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle;
Experimental Variation in effective 12-29 May 2023 for BWF sanctioned tournaments:
the server shall release the shuttle without adding spin, and the server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle;
@Badminton insight
Does this work with a flick serve or does it have to be a drop?
Can we hold the cork while serving? or is it compulsory to hold the feather ?
Yes you can hold the cork, you’re now not allowed ‘pre-spin’ on the shuttle
Thanks , now I can end the argument with my badminton buddies 😂
my badminton racket is a 14y.o Nanospeed 7000 racket is it still good?
it can still hold a 27lbs tension and good for begginers
The best racquet is the one you can play well with! Not necessarily the newest, or most expensive, or lightest, etc. Most important is the grip size and the balance that suits you (head heavy, light or even).
Can greg show us how he wraps his towel grips?
