When krillin say's "HELP ME!" before he dies is much more gut wrenching.
Ehhh, I thought it was too monotonous same with Goku's grunts and screams, him screaming "GOKUUU" felt more emotional and had a better delivery.

Honestly I really like the voice crack. It drives home the fact that Goku is being transformed in a way he's never experienced. A way that he can barely control or sustain.
*Exactly. I don't see that voice crack as a negative of the Z dub. It also works in the context. A slightly different interpretation or way of doing the scene doesn't automatically mean it's inferior. I like both versions.*

One thing I think worth mentioning was that in the 1991 Japanese dub, the soundtrack uses quite ominous - maybe even villanous - music for Goku's transformation, which paired well with the deep, almost demonic roar momentarily added to Nozawa's voice and fits well with the idea that Goku turning super saiyan was him temporarily losing his pure-heartedness.
I mean yeah Super Saiyan does taint your heart, that's why he can't do a Spirit Bomb in that form so yeah, you're kinda right

Completely agree. The other ones are good too, but the kai english version sounds very spontaneous. Some other screams sound like power up screams or premeditated transforming screams. Really says, "I'm going to end you."

I love Sean Schemmel's redone lines and scream in Kai. It's amazing. Definitely my favorite. I'll usually vote for DBZ Kai in any of these issues.

In my opinion the “ORIGINAL” scream from Seam Schemmel’s before the “KAI Version” came out was more of a painful bc he’s NEVER experienced a loss of a great friend that he grew up with that just got blown to bits & having a new power unleashed that was SO POWERFUL to control for awhile but overcame it & tamed it’s power of becoming a “Super Saiyan”, Frieza didn’t know what the hell was going on with him while the lightning happening in the background & the power just ERUPTED from him & that’s why he gave off that giant scream & transformed into the best scene of all DB History with that Golden Glow of aura & Frieza just stepped back bc he knew just pissed him off & was just about to get his ass whooped, lol 😂
I love how people complain about Sean's original dub of this episode but the original Japanese one seemed even less dramatic. More like an angry growl than an explosive transformation.

I love that piccolo pushes Goku out of the way in the anime. It's such a vital part of his character growth to me. Plus it makes more sense that Frieza would aim for Goku first.
I also like Krillin talking about getting married. Those two small changes give those two characters' deaths more emotional impact, since the audience knows that neither of them can be wished back to life any more.

kai just took this one by a landslide, the voices are spot on, its extremely faithful to the manga, and it fixes the previous errors of the 1999 funimation dub

Something being faithful to the manga doesn't make it inherently good. In fact, you should WANT your dubs to offer a different experience, that way attracting old fans of the original source who won't get bored due to the new changes, and attracting the new fans who won't care either way.

@@obarich Listen closer to the Kai scream. You can hear a roar underneath of it. It's used a few times throughout the series, usually when Goku is surpassing his limits in some way. It's the same roar as the Giant Ape

I do think I prefer Piccolo sacrificing himself to save Goku, it shows just how much he's developed as a character. At this point he was still quite resentful towards Goku but he understood that he was the only one who had any hope of getting them off Namek alive. It was also a nice contrast to the fight with Raditz, with Piccolo taking a shot through the chest instead of Goku.
"Pop goes the weasel," I always felt this highlighted the sadistic nature of Frieza's character. I figured they couldn't sense Frieza because he was so wounded initially by the spirit bomb. I don't think they ruin or weaken the story at all

I don't like this change, because the original allowed us to see what Freeza wanted to do by finishing the job : Namekian people genocide. Piccolo was the last remaining namekian people at this point, so Freeza just shot him straight away...and Piccolo already defended Goku so he could use his spirit bomb on Freeza, if he didn't, Freeza already could have killed Goku bar none, so he just wanted to wipe out any disturbing people who would ever stand in his way again. Freeza is not a stupid villain, because he remembers things very well and Piccolo has annoyed him when he was about to point blank head shot Goku, a few moments before he took the spirit bomb on his face ! So because of Piccolo in the first place, he feared and believed he was about to die for a brief moment and that's why he aimed him first...

The original Japanese anime version is my favorite. And it's all down to the voice effect.
Japanese Goku is always played by Masako Nozawa as childlike, straightforward and honest. Often very chipper and optimistic. But when he transforms, he sounds deep, furious, and *animalistic*. Which makes sense, as he's tapping into his Saiyan heritage. And what's the most notable trait of Saiyans compared to humans up to this point? The Oozaru transformation. It's as if all the fury and power of the Oozaru is being channeled into a single point. Which is just insanely effective.

The voice actor is Mexican so he is right. Google it, his name is Mario Castañeda and he is by far the best dub voice Goku ever had and not just him but the entire cast.

Freeza saying "pop goes the weasel" after killing Krillin is honestly better because I feel like that's what ticked Goku off because Freeza made it sound like Krillin was a joke and he made a joke out of his death which makes Goku even angrier.

Genuinely can never decide on if the insult to krillin or the threat to gohan is the better follow up for Freiza as a character
When speaking about the Manga vs Anime’s interpretation involving Frieza shooting Piccolo, I have to say that the manga’s scene is better. The manga makes it seem like Frieza shot at Piccolo solely to torment Goku, hence why he killed Krillin next. In the anime, it’s kind of contradictory, as Frieza shot at Goku, but Piccolo took the hit for him. Frieza then killed Krillin, but why didn’t Frieza just try to shoot at Goku again?
Well the way I see it is this: Freeza nearly got killed, by a saiyan of all things. As soon as he get's up he's gonna want to kill the person who made him look like such a fool. Instead Piccolo takes the shot for Goku, so now Freeza's got a second to think "Hm actually, yes I think I'll make you suffer first!"
The idea of him getting right back up and decided to kill his friends first doesn't make sense to me. He needs a second to gain his composure before he'd plan that out. Him immediately aiming for Goku out of pure anger makes sense to me. Also get's Piccolo in that position in a way that feels more natural, if he just got shot I figured he'd fall on his back. Having him leap into Goku works better and shows off his selfless spirit just like with Gohan.

What I think Frieza should have done was wait until Kakarot (Yes I call Goku Kakarot sometimes), Piccolo, Gohan, and Krillin had left Namek then he could've taken one of the Ginyu forces pods to get off of Namek, go back to his homeworld, healed himself, then go to Earth and kill everyone.

I like the way Kai sounds, and the music fits the tone better, but the original artwork for the earlier shows are the best. It's a shame we can't combine the best perks for each show.

I'm usually not a fan of the Japanese voices for DBZ, but the scream from Krillin in the original airing is absolutely amazing
As odd as all the filler was in OG DragonBall, growing up with it as a kid in the west felt like a journey growing up more than anything, and I will never forget it. The funimation scream is just iconic for me, but I have to give kudos to the kai scream. They got that down.

5:56 I think it was better, because it added more character to piccolo to emphasize that as much as he seems villainous throughout the series, he's always being series for a reason- it also gave us this dramatic moment that opened up for opportunities for a legendary moment- which just so happened to be Goku turning Super Sayin :3
I think it was better because it makes sense for Frieza to grow desperate and want to kill the strongest first while also giving piccolo time to shine again as the altruistic person he has shown himself to be in the past.

That actually never made sense to me. Freeza was trying to make goku suffer by killing his friends. Why would he aim for goku first? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of his actions?

There's a fan made animation of this scene and it uses the Kai version of the scream, but the animator made the scream much longer and it's BONE chilling. So unbelievably good.

Don't know why but I loved the funimation dub for the Goku screams. It gave me the chills and the dialogue of frieza really increased the intensity of the situation.
Kai did good, but it’s hard to compare to the amazing voice acting in manga

I've always wanted to see what happened in the original manga how Goku turned SS1 the first ever time. I'm surprised how sudden that is. But in terms of the screams, I love both versions of how Sean did but Kai did it more genuine.
I personally like how goku screamed, because at that point of the story goku is tired,he saw vegeta died, he knew that frieza slaughtered innocent namekians and after that he saw his best friend died, and when he went super saiyan he let out all of his pain cause he couldnt hold any of it anymore
The scream wouldn't have worked in the manga, but all that buildup was perfect for animation
First one I saw was the voice crack transformation and I'm glad that moment wasn't ruined.

I like how you putted a fragment of the scream that Mario Castañeda made for Dragon Ball Z. If I get it right, it is said that he really got pissed when making that scene.
My favorite has ALWAYS been DBZ Kai. I prefer English dubs anyway, but Kai makes Frieza MUCH more sinister than he was in Funimation, and the lines just make more sense. Kai's dialogue really gets me every time.
EDIT: Wow I didn't mean to start a war in the comments. Don't get me wrong, I love both English dubs, I just grew up on Kai and find the dialogue in it to be much better, and, more importantly to me, the pacing is much better due to the dropping of filler. Although I agree with most of you: The classic dub has some epic music. Just to make sure I'm clear, Kai is my favorite of the two for the pacing, dialogue, and, not gonna lie, nostalgia.

Fun fact, when freezer kills Krillin, on the Latam Dub he says "No te muevas ¿no ves que te voy a matar?" what translate as "Dont move, dont you see im going to kill you?"
I feel as if the shift from "Aiming at Piccolo and Hitting," to "Piccolo taking the beam for Goku" Is a good thing, It shows that Goku and Piccolo have grown, Not just in power, but in Companionship too, Demon King Piccolo would never take a death beam for anyone, let alone Goku, but now, Piccolo, not only takes the Death beam, but doesn't Hesitate either, as soon as he sees Frieza charging his Death Beam, he jumps in front of Goku to protect him, Getting Beamed in the process. Piccolo was willing to sacrifice himself for Goku's sake. That to me, is character growth.
