They could have, for instance, done the much easier thing and dubbed some jokes or story for the Hercule crew instead of editing them out. But they knew EXACTLY what they wanted to focus on and put forth all of their effort to make this the best version of this fight. If TFS takes the poll, they earned it.

DBZA may do that, but even THAT Goku knows when to be serious. TFS still respected the source material the most of all these versions, even with the occasional joke thrown in- they still knew how to write in a bit of levity without destroying the overall feel of the fight, and they pulled it off masterfully. You may see it as a problem, but it's a quirk of his character people have grown to enjoy. Their Goku isn't your standard 'I will defeat you to protect my friends' bland shonen hero, he just wants a good fight and isn't afraid to speak his mind- well, maybe just not smart enough to shut up. I think I'd be complaining if he WASN'T doing something dumb- it's who he is. Goku providing those quips are part of why I fell in love with DBZA. I don't see it as a problem, I see it as realistic to his character.

For me (alongside Goku's farewell, which IMO felt so perfect that the whole series rendition of Goku could've perfectly have been building up to that moment) is Gohan's "I hate this" speech that wins it. It sums his character so well and in such a chilling way. The writing on TFS's Cell saga is just sublime and that speech was one of the highlights of the whole arc for me.
The scariest, awesomest part of that is the realization that Cell is also, in a way, *son* of *Gohan*. And of most of the strongest fighters. So he too was philicided.
Tfs got my vote for two reasons: -16's speech to Gohan -that Day of Destiny song. Didn't think I would ever get the giddy chills from an abridged parody.
I've actually heard a lot of people dogging on 16's speech to Gohan. Although I was a personal fan, I do see some of the downside. I think 16 may have been /too/ self aware in a sense.
BrilloPower that abridged parody is the only one that made me cry when it was over and every single time I rewatch it I feel something more special than even the nostalgia of dragon ball z kai which was my introduction to dragon ball
@@slumburger1145 I'm not sure about that, DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, and Yu Yu Hakusho are like the three series where I tend to see a lot of people who prefer the dubbed versions. Maybe DBZ is more contentious than the other two, but still. I though t the community was rather split on that, especially when it comes to the soundtrack.

Eh, TFS wins due to the admittedly unfair advantage of A. Being able to do mostly what they want. B. Being the most recent. C. Having the Perfectest Cell.
TFS had an uncanny ability to balance out comedy, seriousness, and tension. They made gohan's transformation much more than a power spike and a strength boost. He actually became deadly. For a kid that always had trouble actually fighting, this was a drastic change in his character that had shown he was taking the fight seriously.
I love the team four star one because, seeing as this moment/fight was already very emotional, it made it that much more emotional going back to all the running jokes "one last time" and possibly saying goodbye to this series we've enjoyed forever. ALSO, you can't not cry seeing the "dumb" and naive goku of TFS be serious and have a serious moment of sacrifice and a moment of love to his son
Well it did do a great job :p Tight cuts, great pacing, payoff on character arcs, focus on the fight, no filler, and giving hte emotional moments just the right amount of time to breathe... TFS really hit the ball out of the park.
There is one line in the original Funimation dub that deserves all the praise. When Cell kills 16 he doesn't just disregard him or call him trash he looks right at Gohan and says: "yet another fighter YOU could have saved." That's so much more messed up and has such an impact on the SSJ2 transformation. He's putting the blame of the death on Gohan which would weigh so much more on him I feel.
For me, I thought it was way more impactful in the TFS version when Cell killed 16 and then said, “ I would say he’s better off this way, but... we both know he never had a SOUL.”
I love the picture of him sitting in the afterlife holding the bird. He was more human than several of the other people in the story. That's partly due to several characters being aliens as well though.
Well he wasn't going to ask for his subscribers' addresses and have the poll go house-to-house. Sorry, but the majority of people like the tfs dub. They are one of, if not the best, abridging teams out there. They made a funny and compelling version of the story, that actually has a more realistic outlook as to how dumb and two-dimensional the characters can be sometimes. As well as having Gohan react in a very reasonable way to being thrown into a death match by his own father.
Team Four Star's is totally the best. I mean...Gohan's speech to Cell from the "You don't get it," all the way to "There's no point in being afraid of the inevitable." Chilling.
Honestly, Day of Fate alone elevated TFS's version by an insane margin, they didn't need to make it, no one was expecting them to, but they did it anyway and in that one scene when the music kicks in you can just feel their love for the source material
I remember Taka got really up in arms about the others joining in to gang up on Cell because it "made no sense that their attacks wouldn't damage him but Vegeta's would" when it honestly did make a lot of sense why; Cells output was enough to spar with Gohan's powered up state even with one arm, and it still called for Vegeta at the end, who WAS the strongest fighter present aside from Gohan by a wide wide margin, and he gave it everything he had. I get why he was frustrated by it, because it established that gap that made the other characters useless in combat in the series at that point, but it's more of a believable character moment that they'd all pitch in to show their support to Gohan and not leave him out there to fight on his own. Gohan never had the pride issues Vegeta did, even with his vendetta against Cell in that moment. He was always characterized by being very much unlike his father and Vegeta, and accepting help, even desiring it, when applicable. That said, I feel TFS still does have the best version of this fight just for its iconicness, homage to the series and fandom, and its insight into the character aspects that made this fight the most fleshed out and powerful part of the Dragonball franchise. TFS understood this part of the story more than even the original animators of it, and loved it in a way one only can when the product is already out there. They have the advantage of hindsight, true, but so did the animation staff with Kai. The English Dub I feel is the weakest to many, but it holds a special place in my heart. I like Falconers score and felt many of its tracks were a lot more fitting for Z's setting and premise (Original Dragonball had the best score but its style really fit the more whimsical setting), but there's no denying that the music around the Cell saga in the original run was better applied and not...overly abundant, something I did notice was wrong with the original dub when I rewatched it years ago. The dub does lose a shit ton of points for its inability to apply silence where it's most effective, but personally it will always be my second fave. And no offense to Masako Nozawa, but even after years now of watching in Japanese I still can't get used to her voice as Goku, and I don't even like Sean Schemmel anymore. (Dude's seriously a dick to his fans most of the time it feels) TFS also feels like the definitive voices now for a lot of the characters. What started off as a typical TH-cam parody turned into the best kind of love letter to the franchise, and Lani, Kaiser, Taka, they've all just become the voices I hear for the characters now. I hope one day when the Funimation cast retires (-cough- or loses the license) it somehow falls into their hands, because in North America, few people would have been able to achieve what they have with Dragonball and they deserve to pioneer its success in the West. ...iiiiiiiif not for the fact that Toei and Shueisha hates them because they can't accept parody as a sign someone is fond of a topic and just find it disrespectful. Dude, this essay you wrote is pretty much exactly how I feel about it as well. I grew up with the dub and it will _always_ hold a special place in my heart, but you can just _feel_ the love TFS has got the series. Personally (probably nostalgia again) prefer the Faulconer tracks, especially Vegeta's for when he goes crazy and does his thing. But there's no better portrayal of his character than "Vegeta no! VEGETA YES!". I would've loved to see a TFS version of Majin Vegeta vs buu but I guess that's a wish that'll probably never happen. Also, the Android 16 speech TFS have was perfect. As a kid I hated how Gohan would always falter and never commit, always hiding behind various reasons. So it was nice to have a character "in universe" actually say that. I mean, I'm older now so I get why Gohan was like that but still. You're right about the guys ganging up on cell, always made sense to me that none of them affected him much. Also 'geets had the high ground so that might'a helped 😃 Perfect cell in the original dub was menacing and all but I'm mainly used to him from the games now. He is _way_ more snarky and TFSesque in those. The actual cell in the dub wasn't nearly as funny as he's portrayed in the games and in the TFS version. With that said, I prefer the TFS and videogame versions of Cell. Superman Goku will always hold a special place in my heart, and is what shaped my values as an adult. That being said the TFS version is iconic in his own right and I'll give props to the Japanese lady for still going at it. I don't like that voice for Goku but credit where is due. Sorry, turns out I'm in an essay type'a mood as well. God it was good seeing TFS get the credit they served for their work. And it was great seeing all the different versions as well. Shit inspired me to go watch _all_ versions and see the differences for myself. And with Coronavirus hitting right now, there's no better time! There's nothing inherently wrong with the Funimation version. The part where he kills the Cell Jr.'s is best in the Funimation version due to the bad ass music cue, but that inner monologue right before SSJ2 was so pointless.

Not saying they don't deserve it mind you. Their version probably has the most consistent characterisation, animation, and pacing. It's just also worth noting that A. This is all building on the established series (as a fan parody made over a decade later), B. It was after over a year of waiting, so it was largely satisfying to have relief from the anticipation. TFS tend to do just about everything better because they have nearly 20 years of hindsight as to what worked/doesn’t work with the series. They made such phenomenal work that I genuinely love it more than any official version.
I'm glad you added the TFS version. They deserve it for all the hard work and love they put in the series. And their version is the easiest to get into

When it all boils down to plain choice, I have to say their dub of that sequence connects with me far more than any of the original tellings. The music in the transformation on TFS version is too epic, and the psicopath side of gohan unleashed was very well done("the murder of one own children.... you wanted me to describe filicide")
I really enjoyed the Dragon Ball Z story growing up, but there were times the filler in the anime REALLY dragged it down. TFS's clear love of the source material and incredible talent to keep what was essential to the story while also not taking things too seriously makes it a clear winner for me. Also that song for Gohan's transformation is incredible.

Though that's mainly because Toriama is an author who tells a story while he's making it up, or in other words, he really doesn't plan farther then the current villain arc, 😖. So, DBZA had the advantage because they could overlay character development on the ALREADY ESTABLISHED STORY. Tl;dr Basically, DBZA is fanfiction that improves on the original, and in my opinion; does the characters better then DBS, 😏

And sometimes (key word: sometimes) the comedy aspects are just too "americanized" if you ask me. As in, you'd hear such jokes in a western comedy movies about teenagers' sexual adventures for instance. Simply, not something fitting the Dragon Ball series or anything close to that, which kinda breaks the immersion for me. And I think most people would agree it gives more justice to the characters than DBS :b At least when it comes to Goku and Vegeta.
TFS hands down. Between removing unnecessary filler, the use of iconic elements of both the original and Funimation versions as well as expanding on the characters with making everything in the series beforehand build up to this moment. TFS did it best.

@@logansdomain16 What I mean by that is most characters were kinda... stupid in the Cell Saga, everyone made stupid/neglectful decisions and that came from how the manga was produced. Toriyama wrote something and the editor would say change it. This led to some very poor writing and characterization. TFS had the benefit of being able to work with the entirety of the lore and make slight tweaks to create a more coherent story. Between Vegeta's out of control ego, Goku's short sighted idiocy and even putting in daddy issues for Gohan, a half Earthling who's more in touch with his emotions than pure blooded saiyans (seriously Toriyama himself said Goku mostly sees his family as friends like Bulma or Krillin). TFS was able to create a bigger payoff for the final moment. As for your issue with "hardly any fighting". So? Gohan was overpowered by Cell and got a one-sided beating, then he overpowered cell and was the only saiyan who didn't enjoy fighting (this is EVERY version of the series). Why would Gohan prolong the fight when he wants it to end? If you enjoy that, fine, I won't knock you for it, but don't sit their and try to insult me because I believe that major, lore enthusiastic fans who took everything laid out and carefully constructed the final moment better than an a dub that can't leave a silent moment alone.

In my entire life, I've never watch any season of dragon ball in it's entirety, always in bits & pieces. DBZA was my first time watching Dragon Ball from start to finish and it was amazing. The humor, the creativity, everything. It was one heck of a journey and I'm glad I've seen it's end
Before I even finished the video, I knew TFS would get the win LOL and not just because of recency bias. They had the benefit of having all the other versions before it. Which allowed them to take the best views and nostalgic beats of every version, add their own flavor, and make a final version that gives love to EVERY fan of each version. The track they make that combines both the English AND Japanese version of Gohan's rage is the best song I've ever heard. Their script as well, which even though is a parody also has many serious and emphatic moments that resonate with me more than every version before it. It was no contest to me, I loved their version. Honestly their entire parody DBZA became arguably my favorite version of the entire show. They really nailed it as time went by, and it became more than just a comedy. It became it's own anime in it's entirety.
Honestly, Team Four Stars scenes between Cell and Gohan, and particularly their handling of Gohans transformation, were just far-and-away the best adaptation I'd seen. And I've been watching DBZ since about 1995 (I was born in 88). Watching Gohans Transformation in DBZ was a great experience when I was in my early teens, but watching TFS handle it, with their musical choices and opting to forgo the inner-dialogue, was just EPIC in my opinion.
Honestly for me if I want true Organic Dragonball I am going back to read the beautiful manga or just watch the classic Japanese version of Ball & Z (cause I actually dont mind DBZ's filler like the driving episode, other world tournament, & others tbh and the original Japanese music is beautiful) But I also love the OG Toonami dub cause honestly I've never taken the original dub of DragonballZ that seriously, to me its just nostlagic fun like rewatching the Pokemon dub, Yugioh Dub, Digimon & Sailor Moon Dubs etc. Its cheesy but hysterical to me and my friends and Bruce Faulconer music just gets us hyped in the gym. Kai is much better acted no doubt but after rewatching it all recently I noticed certain music cues for scenes of intense action lacked oomph like the og JPN & toonami dub. So I am personally indifferent to it & like I said if I want true organic DB got the entire series in Manga form and I can read faster than I watch stuff lol
JaxBlade What really hurt Kai was poor music placement after Yamamoto left. I love all four scores for Z/Kai, but no matter how good a song is, if it’s placed poorly, it can kill any scene.
I wonder if most people remember... but Cell had a theme in the original Japanese version that was amazing. (It's played for the final time as he's desintegrating in Gohan's Kamehameha and it's absolutely chilling.) Unfortunately, it isn't played at all in Kai. I'm surprised Totally Not Mark didn't mention it. It's really making me wonder if the younger generation of DB fans have ever heard it _at all._
I think adding the TFS was a bit too biased as TFS has unlimited time to come up with resources and materials for each episode. With that being said, if it's overall for the fight, some scenes I prefer the Japanese original, and some scenes in the English dub. Example: Adding Ginyu's transformation/Vegeta's theme during the Kamehameha battle was better than the original. Unmei no hi during Gohan's SS2/SSJ2 theme was the best in Japanese, it was certainly better than the talking. The buildup was terrific.
I really enjoyed the Z Fighters jumping in to help. 'Gohan's Anger' Is an incredibly good track, but- Shockingly! I think the 'Father Son Kamehameha' mix is incredibly good.
I prefer... the latino version, holy shit, the kind of entonation and spirit with those voices!! mario castañeda, Rene Garcia, Ricardo Brust and Laura Torres bring the characters to a whole new level
My only real issue with the TFS version is that they cut out the Z fighters helping out in the final beam struggle. I thought it was a massive letdown considering how little Tien, Yamcha, etc actually get to do in the series. It would have been a better send off to have everyone contribute.
I don’t know which one to choose because the original Japanese had a way better soundtrack when Gohan transforms into SSJ2, but Funimation had a way better soundtrack during the father-son kamehameha.
I love the TFS' rendition of Gohan vs. Cell, although I think keeping all existing Z-fighters bombarding Cell with their strongest attacks was I think a stronger ending than only Vegeta making his strongest ki blast.
The opening for the English dub in the Cell Saga was not "Rock the Dragon". That song only played during the Saiyan and Namek arcs. Once funimation took over making their own music and dub during the Ginyu arc, a new opening tune was created which is just an instrumental piece of hard rock. This tune was used until the Saiyaman arc when it was redone with different guitar work, and that version was used until the end of the series.
Agin, being stuck to nostalgia is amazing. Having seen the original dubbed episode in 93 from japan while I was a kid in Brazil back in the 90s, that’s the one that took me. I’ve had that unmei no hi song in my mind and heart since before my teen years. So I went for the original Japanese score. With that said. TFS, was unbelievably amazing in their cover and quite honestly, I think everything they dub, especially dbz, is better then most stuff that has come out nowadays. To hear that song in English was amazing and brought feels to a grown man. Once again, thanks TFS for being so awesome!

While I like the idea of presenting a comparison of the different versions of the fight, I feel like providing the option to vote for the TFS version was a mistake. DBZA has always been presented as being a supplementary satire of the original series, but I feel that too many people as of late are short changing the official versions in favour of the satire. That's not to say I don't like the Abridged series and the talent that goes into it - I do in fact love it and am constantly being blown away by the phenomenal talent involved - I just think that it's not a fair comparison. Honestly it never could be; since DBZA has a different tone due to being ostensibly a comical send-up, has the advantage of being aware of future series events that would be impossible for the original to be aware of, gets to be self aware of the dumber aspects of the series that would have been out of place in the original, and the blend of send-ups to contemporary references unrelated to the original/from other media due to being an unofficial product (or in short, the utilisation of memes), it's basically a different product entirely.

I see what your saying, but I personally see DBZA as a parody not a satire. A satire is a demeaning work that exists to point out the flaws in something, parody does the same thing technically but it's made with love of the original work and only exists to highten ones love of it. Why that matters is TFS took the OG work and stayed true to it while doing their own thing, it isn't in its own realm it's closely connected, but has aspects that separate it. It's in that separation you can decide whether it deserves to be compared to the others, and I personally think it does, but I will say it was obviously going to win based purely on the personal aspect a lot of people have with the series.

TFS still respected the source material the most of all these versions, even with the occasional joke thrown in- they still knew how to write in a bit of levity without destroying the overall feel of the fight, and they pulled it off masterfully. You may see it as a problem, but it's a quirk of his character people have grown to enjoy. Their Goku isn't your standard 'I will defeat you to protect my friends' bland shonen hero, he just wants a good fight and isn't afraid to speak his mind- well, maybe just not smart enough to shut up. I think I'd be complaining if he WASN'T doing something dumb- it's who he is. Goku providing those quips are part of why I fell in love with DBZA. I don't see it as a problem, I see it as realistic to his character.

For me (alongside Goku's farewell, which IMO felt so perfect that the whole series rendition of Goku could've perfectly have been building up to that moment) is Gohan's "I hate this" speech that wins it. It sums his character so well and in such a chilling way. The writing on TFS's Cell saga is just sublime and that speech was one of the highlights of the whole arc for me.
The scariest, awesomest part of that is the realization that Cell is also, in a way, *son* of *Gohan*. And of most of the strongest fighters. So he too was philicided.
Tfs got my vote for two reasons:
-16's speech to Gohan
-that Day of Destiny song.

I've actually heard a lot of people dogging on 16's speech to Gohan. Although I was a personal fan, I do see some of the downside. I think 16 may have been /too/ self aware in a sense.

TFS had an uncanny ability to balance out comedy, seriousness, and tension. They made gohan's transformation much more than a power spike and a strength boost. He actually became deadly. For a kid that always had trouble actually fighting, this was a drastic change in his character that had shown he was taking the fight seriously.

There is one line in the original Funimation dub that deserves all the praise.
When Cell kills 16 he doesn't just disregard him or call him trash he looks right at Gohan and says: "yet another fighter YOU could have saved."
That's so much more messed up and has such an impact on the SSJ2 transformation. He's putting the blame of the death on Gohan which would weigh so much more on him I feel.
For me, I thought it was way more impactful in the TFS version when Cell killed 16 and then said, “ I would say he’s better off this way, but... we both know he never had a SOUL.”
That line maked no sense cuz Cell didnt even kill anyone at the Cell games lol

Well he wasn't going to ask for his subscribers' addresses and have the poll go house-to-house. Sorry, but the majority of people like the tfs dub. They are one of, if not the best, abridging teams out there. They made a funny and compelling version of the story, that actually has a more realistic outlook as to how dumb and two-dimensional the characters can be sometimes. As well as having Gohan react in a very reasonable way to being thrown into a death match by his own father.
It's also the only choice many people know if they grew up in a country that had it's own non-english/non-japanese dub.

Honestly, Day of Fate alone elevated TFS's version by an insane margin, they didn't need to make it, no one was expecting them to, but they did it anyway and in that one scene when the music kicks in you can just feel their love for the source material

I remember Taka got really up in arms about the others joining in to gang up on Cell because it "made no sense that their attacks wouldn't damage him but Vegeta's would" when it honestly did make a lot of sense why; Cells output was enough to spar with Gohan's powered up state even with one arm, and it still called for Vegeta at the end, who WAS the strongest fighter present aside from Gohan by a wide wide margin, and he gave it everything he had. I get why he was frustrated by it, because it established that gap that made the other characters useless in combat in the series at that point, but it's more of a believable character moment that they'd all pitch in to show their support to Gohan and not leave him out there to fight on his own. Gohan never had the pride issues Vegeta did, even with his vendetta against Cell in that moment. He was always characterized by being very much unlike his father and Vegeta, and accepting help, even desiring it, when applicable.
That said, I feel TFS still does have the best version of this fight just for its iconicness, homage to the series and fandom, and its insight into the character aspects that made this fight the most fleshed out and powerful part of the Dragonball franchise. TFS understood this part of the story more than even the original animators of it, and loved it in a way one only can when the product is already out there. They have the advantage of hindsight, true, but so did the animation staff with Kai.
The English Dub I feel is the weakest to many, but it holds a special place in my heart. I like Falconers score and felt many of its tracks were a lot more fitting for Z's setting and premise (Original Dragonball had the best score but its style really fit the more whimsical setting), but there's no denying that the music around the Cell saga in the original run was better applied and not...overly abundant, something I did notice was wrong with the original dub when I rewatched it years ago. The dub does lose a shit ton of points for its inability to apply silence where it's most effective, but personally it will always be my second fave. And no offense to Masako Nozawa, but even after years now of watching in Japanese I still can't get used to her voice as Goku, and I don't even like Sean Schemmel anymore. (Dude's seriously a dick to his fans most of the time it feels)
TFS also feels like the definitive voices now for a lot of the characters. What started off as a typical TH-cam parody turned into the best kind of love letter to the franchise, and Lani, Kaiser, Taka, they've all just become the voices I hear for the characters now. I hope one day when the Funimation cast retires (-cough- or loses the license) it somehow falls into their hands, because in North America, few people would have been able to achieve what they have with Dragonball and they deserve to pioneer its success in the West. ...iiiiiiiif not for the fact that Toei and Shueisha hates them because they can't accept parody as a sign someone is fond of a topic and just find it disrespectful. It's funny, too, because they honestly understand the franchise better than all those suits handing out cease and desists.

Dude, this essay you wrote is pretty much exactly how I feel about it as well. I grew up with the dub and it will _always_ hold a special place in my heart, but you can just _feel_ the love TFS has got the series.
Personally (probably nostalgia again) prefer the Faulconer tracks, especially Vegeta's for when he goes crazy and does his thing.
But there's no better portrayal of his character than "Vegeta no! VEGETA YES!". I would've loved to see a TFS version of Majin Vegeta vs buu but I guess that's a wish that'll probably never happen.
Also, the Android 16 speech TFS have was perfect. As a kid I hated how Gohan would always falter and never commit, always hiding behind various reasons. So it was nice to have a character "in universe" actually say that. I mean, I'm older now so I get why Gohan was like that but still.

Perfect cell in the original dub was menacing and all but I'm mainly used to him from the games now. He is _way_ more snarky and TFSesque in those. The actual cell in the dub wasn't nearly as funny as he's portrayed in the games and in the TFS version. With that said, I prefer the TFS and videogame versions of Cell.
Superman Goku will always hold a special place in my heart, and is what shaped my values as an adult. That being said the TFS version is iconic in his own right and I'll give props to the Japanese lady for still going at it. I don't like that voice for Goku but credit where is due.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the Funimation version. The part where he kills the Cell Jr.'s is best in the Funimation version due to the bad ass music cue, but that inner monologue right before SSJ2 was so pointless.

I really enjoyed the Dragon Ball Z story growing up, but there were times the filler in the anime REALLY dragged it down. TFS's clear love of the source material and incredible talent to keep what was essential to the story while also not taking things too seriously makes it a clear winner for me. Simply, not something fitting the Dragon Ball series or anything close to that, which kinda breaks the immersion for me.

@@logansdomain16 What I mean by that is most characters were kinda... stupid in the Cell Saga, everyone made stupid/neglectful decisions and that came from how the manga was produced. Toriyama wrote something and the editor would say change it. This led to some very poor writing and characterization.
TFS had the benefit of being able to work with the entirety of the lore and make slight tweaks to create a more coherent story. Between Vegeta's out of control ego, Goku's short sighted idiocy and even putting in daddy issues for Gohan, a half Earthling who's more in touch with his emotions than pure blooded saiyans (seriously Toriyama himself said Goku mostly sees his family as friends like Bulma or Krillin). TFS was able to create a bigger payoff for the final moment.
As for your issue with "hardly any fighting". So? Gohan was overpowered by Cell and got a one-sided beating, then he overpowered cell and was the only saiyan who didn't enjoy fighting (this is EVERY version of the series). Why would Gohan prolong the fight when he wants it to end?
If you enjoy that, fine, I won't knock you for it, but don't sit their and try to insult me because I believe that major, lore enthusiastic fans who took everything laid out and carefully constructed the final moment better than an a dub that can't leave a silent moment alone.

Before I even finished the video, I knew TFS would get the win LOL and not just because of recency bias. They had the benefit of having all the other versions before it. Which allowed them to take the best views and nostalgic beats of every version, add their own flavor, and make a final version that gives love to EVERY fan of each version. The track they make that combines both the English AND Japanese version of Gohan's rage is the best song I've ever heard. Their script as well, which even though is a parody also has many serious and emphatic moments that resonate with me more than every version before it. It was no contest to me, I loved their version. Honestly their entire parody DBZA became arguably my favorite version of the entire show. They really nailed it as time went by, and it became more than just a comedy. It became it's own anime in it's entirety.
Honestly, Team Four Stars scenes between Cell and Gohan, and particularly their handling of Gohans transformation, were just far-and-away the best adaptation I'd seen. And I've been watching DBZ since about 1995 (I was born in 88).
Watching Gohans Transformation in DBZ was a great experience when I was in my early teens, but watching TFS handle it, with their musical choices and opting to forgo the inner-dialogue, was just EPIC in my opinion.
Honestly for me if I want true Organic Dragonball I am going back to read the beautiful manga or just watch the classic Japanese version of Ball & Z (cause I actually dont mind DBZ's filler like the driving episode, other world tournament, & others tbh and the original Japanese music is beautiful) But I also love the OG Toonami dub cause honestly I've never taken the original dub of DragonballZ that seriously, to me its just nostlagic fun like rewatching the Pokemon dub, Yugioh Dub, Digimon & Sailor Moon Dubs etc. Its cheesy but hysterical to me and my friends and Bruce Faulconer music just gets us hyped in the gym. Kai is much better acted no doubt but after rewatching it all recently I noticed certain music cues for scenes of intense action lacked oomph like the og JPN & toonami dub. So I am personally indifferent to it & like I said if I want true organic DB got the entire series in Manga form and I can read faster than I watch stuff lol

JaxBlade What really hurt Kai was poor music placement after Yamamoto left. I love all four scores for Z/Kai, but no matter how good a song is, if it’s placed poorly, it can kill any scene.

I wonder if most people remember... but Cell had a theme in the original Japanese version that was amazing. (It's played for the final time as he's desintegrating in Gohan's Kamehameha and it's absolutely chilling.)
Unfortunately, it isn't played at all in Kai. I'm surprised Totally Not Mark didn't mention it.

I think adding the TFS was a bit too biased as TFS has unlimited time to come up with resources and materials for each episode. With that being said, if it's overall for the fight, some scenes I prefer the Japanese original, and some scenes in the English dub.
Example: Adding Ginyu's transformation/Vegeta's theme during the Kamehameha battle was better than the original. Unmei no hi during Gohan's SS2/SSJ2 theme was the best in Japanese, it was certainly better than the talking. The buildup was terrific.
I really enjoyed the Z Fighters jumping in to help. 'Gohan's Anger' Is an incredibly good track, but- Shockingly! I think the 'Father Son Kamehameha' mix is incredibly good.

Gohan sounds really good in that dub for me.
I think TFS did the best version. It takes care of the dragging on of the other versions whilst keeping a complex tone and beautiful climax.
TFS’s version is so good that I’ve basically phased out the actual dub with everything that happens on the Abridged version

TFS's rendition made me actually cry tears of sadness.
My only real issue with the TFS version is that they cut out the Z fighters helping out in the final beam struggle. I thought it was a massive letdown considering how little Tien, Yamcha, etc actually get to do in the series. It would have been a better send off to have everyone contribute.
TFS' version was pretty awesome, gohan was so angsty, it felt legit.
I don’t know which one to choose because the original Japanese had a way better soundtrack when Gohan transforms into SSJ2, but Funimation had a way better soundtrack during the father-son kamehameha.

Original Japanese is what I love the most
The opening for the English dub in the Cell Saga was not "Rock the Dragon". That song only played during the Saiyan and Namek arcs. Once funimation took over making their own music and dub during the Ginyu arc, a new opening tune was created which is just an instrumental piece of hard rock. This tune was used until the Saiyaman arc when it was redone with different guitar work, and that version was used until the end of the series.
Agin, being stuck to nostalgia is amazing. Having seen the original dubbed episode in 93 from japan while I was a kid in Brazil back in the 90s, that’s the one that took me. I’ve had that unmei no hi song in my mind and heart since before my teen years. So I went for the original Japanese score. With that said.
TFS, was unbelievably amazing in their cover and quite honestly, I think everything they dub, especially dbz, is better then most stuff that has come out nowadays. To hear that song in English was amazing and brought feels to a grown man. Once again, thanks TFS for being so awesome!

Prodigal-Saiyan yeah but apparently they believe an 80 year old woman voices a man better than an actual man lol, at least Sean can give Goku a high pitched voice without making him sound like a grandma. I have nothing wrong with the sub but I just think Goku sounds more authentic with Sean.

While I like the idea of presenting a comparison of the different versions of the fight, I feel like providing the option to vote for the TFS version was a mistake. DBZA has always been presented as being a supplementary satire of the original series, but I feel that too many people as of late are short changing the official versions in favour of the satire.
That's not to say I don't like the Abridged series and the talent that goes into it - I do in fact love it and am constantly being blown away by the phenomenal talent involved - I just think that it's not a fair comparison. Honestly it never could be; since DBZA has a different tone due to being ostensibly a comical send-up, has the advantage of being aware of future series events that would be impossible for the original to be aware of, gets to be self aware of the dumber aspects of the series that would have been out of place in the original, and the blend of send-ups to contemporary references unrelated to the original/from other media due to being an unofficial product (or in short, the utilisation of memes), it's basically a different product entirely.
You do know that some anime English dubs change some plots of the story and add their own 3 cents into it?

Redux That’s EXACTLY. Honestly the fact that DBZA won this by a landslide kind of angers me. I LOVE TFS but it really shouldn’t have been an option, like you said it almost feels like a completely different series. If we’re talking between the actual 3 choices, Kai is the best for me no question
I see what your saying, but I personally see DBZA as a parody not a satire. A satire is a demeaning work that exists to point out the flaws in something, parody does the same thing technically but it's made with love of the original work and only exists to highten ones love of it. Why that matters is TFS took the OG work and stayed true to it while doing their own thing, it isn't in its own realm it's closely connected, but has aspects that separate it. It's in that separation you can decide whether it deserves to be compared to the others, and I personally think it does, but I will say it was obviously going to win based purely on the personal aspect a lot of people have with the series.
