Vegeta is my favorite now but he became my favorite when he fought the Ginyu Force. Before then id have to say was Krillin. Because that guy has been through a lot. It wasn't until the end of the cell saga when he finally got a family he settled down. Even then he fought in the Tournament of power. IMO he's the strongest human with the most development.

In the original English funi dub, he says, without hesitation: *"So be it."* In Japanese and Kai he shows a regret in death. That is sad, but in the original English he immediately acknowledged how his afterlife was forfeit due to his actions and despite knowing he will suffer for eternity, he believes it is a fair price to keep his family safe. In the other versions, he had a bit of selfishness in his last minutes, but in the English his words are completely selfless, almost admitting to himself that he doesn't have the right to the benefits that Goku was given.
@@tl8211 My bad, selfish is a harsh word. More "regretful" than anything. You make a good point about it being more of a sacrifice if he acknowledges his personal loss, but in my opinion him immediately completely understanding that his actions = consequences plays up his character progression, almost making it seem like his end will be an appropriate price to pay for the monster he used to be. In the end, be it redemption or regret this scene is amazing.

Whatever version I’m watching, I always manage to tear up. Vegeta is my favorite character for this reason. He’s had the most character growth, he started out as a selfish mass murderer and when we get to this scene he Is giving his life for everyone else. It’s a beautiful arc.
Yeah, but in terms of localisation and seeing how the narrative changes with translation, the video does a fine job giving us information to make a decision. I grew up with the original funimation dub and I love the voices, but I can never agree with how they change the narrative and dialogue. Changes in wording and phrase's really impact our perception of the characters personality. I.e. "pity" vs. "so be it." Also can't agree with depicting Goku as a superman like figure. In terms of music, I'm not a huge fan of the track played during the English version of the sacrifice. It didn't sound regretful and impactful, rather, it sounded like an empty anticipation of the explosion.

Technically, Vegeta’s character development was not finished until the Kid Buu fight (and Super forgot about that). But this moment was definitely the climax of his character arc. Beautiful!
Luiz Eduardo not really. Super wanted to keep Vegeta at the point after his sacrifice and before his speech. It kept reverting him to moments similar to his sacrifice to generate hype like the my Bulma scene. After Vegeta’s speech, him and Goku were more like close friends than rivals (that still like fighting). After the Kid Buu fight when they thumbs up each other, I don’t see Super’s Vegeta doing that. Super hyped Vegeta more than grew as a character. Until ToP, he was stagnant.

Echo Light Goku and Vegeta will always be rivals. Best friends can be rivals and that’s what Goku and Vegeta basically were in super. Vegeta said the whole thing about Goku being the best but that doesn’t mean Vegeta doesn’t want to get stronger and surpass the best. Like the other guy said super just expanded on what was already developed

That eye twitch in the funimation dub is 👌. I think the funimation dub has the advantage as the dialogue is more grown up. I mean you only have to listen to the speech between him and goku “ Fool! you don’t know what humiliation is!” It’s similar to mgs vs mgs TTS, the original sounds more grown up and TTS is more dumbed down like Kai

The og funimation dub for me... the harshness of vegeta stays in line with his character even till super, sabats yelling is amazing and the falk track makes it so much more dramatic and tense sounding. “ your a fool, I will crush you and throw you into the wind!” One of the most badass lines I’ve ever heard!
Mark I request u again ! Please do a video on Gohan explaining that how he's not a failure . As his motivations are different from that of Vegeta and Goku and he actually has a character development. I think he's one of the most wrongly understood character in DB verse .
People react almost like future trunks reacts when he meets gohan in super. The only thing thats different is that trunks realises that this is the life gohan always wanted.
What he doesn't like is senseless violence and killing. Gohan is a fighter, and he enjoys fighting as a sport....naturally, he's part saiyan. He doesn't, however, enjoy it enough to completely drop his life to go train on some distant planet away from his family unless something warrants it. Its a hobby to him on occasions and something he does when needed (like Frieza's revival or Tournament of Power). Even the human martial artists have pretty much dropped their careers as fighters...save Tien, and they all love martial arts.
Interesting to see that the US got this episode in 2001, in France we got it in 1995 iirc. End of 80's early 90's were pretty crazy years for Japanimation in France, would make a great topic with a lot of memes from Hokuto no Ken or City Hunter French dub x). As far as this scene (and DBZ) goes, we also mostly had the JP soundtrack, so I can't say I love the US one as a Westerner ;). In the end, to me the OG JP version takes the cake. These are the visuals and the music I grew up with while watching DB(Z) on Club Do', key difference would be the language but thanks to internet I've got the chance to listen and appreciate the original version one. For those curious to see how the French version does it, the episode title is: "Le sacrifice d'un père" , and you can find on youtube the very end (last 3minutes or so) of the episode on youtube (try searching "Vegeta se sacrifie"), for the full episode, it's a bit trickier ;).
The early Funi dub had its moments but I didnt like how they changed Piccolo's dialogue to make Goku look so heroic. Kai improved on it but I will always have a soft spot for the original version
Ghost Dragon I wouldn’t say that was a fault. Piccolo’s description on Goku and Vegeta in the early funimation dub really show the contrast between the two characters, which elevates the moment making many feel pretty sorry for Vegeta.

I love Kai's version. I'm a huge Kai fan. Also, the music in the Final Chapter is great. Most people don't realize it but a lot of super's music actually came from DBK The Final Chapter.
I'd say the original Funimation Dub has the most impact. I'm not much of a Falconer fan aside from a few tracks, "Vegeta Knows his Son" being one of them. Also the quote "You are a fool, I am going to crush you and throw you into the wind!" gets my jollies going every time. But best death scream goes to the Kai version.
I agree with "You are a fool I'm going to crush you and throw you into the wind" gives me the chill as well but my favorite part is when he says"i think i finally understand you, lets go." Because he wasn't talking to buu he was talking to himself about goku when goku sacrificed himself to cell.
Not really. With the stupid dialogue changes (Vegeta still using funny names for Goku/Goku being portrayed as an superhero) and the talking over silence it looses impact. The long silence scenes makes it creepy and impactful. You just know that something lies in the air and that its something bad. Your own fantasy is going to work because of the silence. And then the narration at the end.... Just perfect.

The Game Grumps Let’s Play of Majora’s Mask vegeta surviving his makes more sense to me than 17. Vegetas final explosion is just a ludicrous amount of energy being released from his body. 17 legitimately self destructed and somehow survived.
Faulkoner's score takes the cake for me. I still get chills. It goes from "goku recovers" to "Vegeta gets bean" into "Vegeta knows his son" and then, of course, "Vegeta's them" for the Final Explosion. And then the Narrator's voice “And so one of the earths greatest warriors has vanished in a blinding flash of light, having made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his loved ones, his name was Vegeta, a proud Saiyan Prince” *tear I do gotta say, though, they did a good job on the music in kai, and Sabat's yell is much improved.

2001! I remember the long hiatus after that episode and thought the show was over. The joy I got when Toonami finally showed the commercial for the new episodes was equal to the sorrow I had seeing my favorite character disappear in that blinding flash as the narrator gave him a beautiful send off.
Everyone sleeps on Krillen’s part in this scene... Years ago he was forced to spare an evil person’s life against his will and he was so sure beyond any doubt that it was the wrong decision. This reaction to Vegeta’s death shows that down deep he already considered Vegeta to be one of them and he’s watching a comrade sacrifice himself for the team. It’s honestly gutwrenching 💔
Say what you want about the original funimation dub as a whole, but there are certain moments in it that find a way to outshine all other interations. Vegeta's sacrifice imo is one of these moments. The foreboding Faulconer score subtly waves and builds in the background without distracting the audience with loud trumpets or sharp noises or whatever the Japanese did. Kai's music felt out of place imo as the music placed vegeta in too much of a heroic light when his character is more in line with being an anti- hero. With Faulconer's score just as it reaches crescendo Vegeta's iconic bell theme kicks in as the exclamation point to help elevate Sabat's battle cry. Vegeta in his final moments went out more like a softer but battle hardened warrior than a complete good guy.The irony that the bells in his theme essentially become death bells ringing as Vegeta sacrafices himself was never lost on me.

@Legendary Goku Actually they have a solid schedule for the next season/arc. They'll be working on it for these first five or so months of this year, so that they're able to release weekly episodes hopefully this fall. That way we won't have to wonder when the next episode is coming out.
I watched this scene for the first time when i was 15 and it was moving i rewatched it after becoming a a father in 2011 and it became heart wrenching. There is no more noblest of an act then one who lays down his life for ones he loves
I like the early funimation dub because although toriyama doesnt think of goku as a hero other characters like piccolo should see what he does and think that he is in universe. Also Ryo Horikawa always does an amazing job but Christopher Sabat is my childhood

As a kid I loved Vegeta and as an adult I realized why. He is definitely one of the best characters in the show, and this was one of his best moments in the series.

I'm gonna go ahead and say I loved the 2001 Funimation version. The score was what did it for me. All of the animated versions' sweeping visuals were amazing for it, though.
Not only does Trunks' faith in his dad show what Trunks thinks but it also can be considered as motivating Vegeta. The need to protect your own son. The desire, to live up to the person who idolizes you the most, and what they expect. The power of dad is strong. I love all of them and I cried back when I first saw it as a kid. I suppose I like the original Dub for nostalgia sake. But nowadays I love the Kai dub. Followed by the mango.
7:12 I think they added this change to explain to the younger portion of the audience (who may have missed out on some of the earlier lore) why Goku keeps his body when he dies and Vegeta wouldn't.

Yeah, but in terms of localisation and seeing how the narrative changes with translation, the video does a fine job giving us information to make a decision. I grew up with the original funimation dub and I love the voices, but I can never agree with how they change the narrative and dialogue. Changes in wording and phrase's really impact our perception of the characters personality. I.e. "pity" vs. "so be it." Also can't agree with depicting Goku as a superman like figure.
In terms of music, I'm not a huge fan of the track played during the English version of the sacrifice. It didn't sound regretful and impactful, rather, it sounded like an empty anticipation of the explosion.

Technically, Vegeta’s character development was not finished until the Kid Buu fight (and Super forgot about that). But this moment was definitely the climax of his character arc. Beautiful!

Luiz Eduardo not really. Super wanted to keep Vegeta at the point after his sacrifice and before his speech. It kept reverting him to moments similar to his sacrifice to generate hype like the my Bulma scene. After Vegeta’s speech, him and Goku were more like close friends than rivals (that still like fighting). After the Kid Buu fight when they thumbs up each other, I don’t see Super’s Vegeta doing that. Super hyped Vegeta more than grew as a character. Until ToP, he was stagnant.

I mean you only have to listen to the speech between him and goku “ Fool! you don’t know what humiliation is!” It’s similar to mgs vs mgs TTS, the original sounds more grown up and TTS is more dumbed down like Kai

The og funimation dub for me... the harshness of vegeta stays in line with his character even till super, sabats yelling is amazing and the falk track makes it so much more dramatic and tense sounding. “ your a fool, I will crush you and throw you into the wind!” One of the most badass lines I’ve ever heard!
I hold the Funimation dub near dear to my heart cause I was 10 & it was tear jerking. Not to mention the Bruce Falconer score can NEVER be duplicated

Mark I request u again ! Please do a video on Gohan explaining that how he's not a failure . As his motivations are different from that of Vegeta and Goku and he actually has a character development. I think he's one of the most wrongly understood character in DB verse .
Alot of people dont understand that gohan was never meant to be a fighter
People react almost like future trunks reacts when he meets gohan in super. The only thing thats different is that trunks realises that this is the life gohan always wanted.
What he doesn't like is senseless violence and killing. Gohan is a fighter, and he enjoys fighting as a sport....naturally, he's part saiyan. He doesn't, however, enjoy it enough to completely drop his life to go train on some distant planet away from his family unless something warrants it. Its a hobby to him on occasions and something he does when needed (like Frieza's revival or Tournament of Power). Even the human martial artists have pretty much dropped their careers as fighters...save Tien, and they all love martial arts.

Interesting to see that the US got this episode in 2001, in France we got it in 1995 iirc. End of 80's early 90's were pretty crazy years for Japanimation in France, would make a great topic with a lot of memes from Hokuto no Ken or City Hunter French dub x).
As far as this scene (and DBZ) goes, we also mostly had the JP soundtrack, so I can't say I love the US one as a Westerner ;).
In the end, to me the OG JP version takes the cake. These are the visuals and the music I grew up with while watching DB(Z) on Club Do', key difference would be the language but thanks to internet I've got the chance to listen and appreciate the original version one.
For those curious to see how the French version does it, the episode title is: "Le sacrifice d'un père" , and you can find on youtube the very end (last 3minutes or so) of the episode on youtube (try searching "Vegeta se sacrifie"), for the full episode, it's a bit trickier ;).
The early Funi dub had its moments but I didnt like how they changed Piccolo's dialogue to make Goku look so heroic. Kai improved on it but I will always have a soft spot for the original version
Ghost Dragon I wouldn’t say that was a fault. Piccolo’s description on Goku and Vegeta in the early funimation dub really show the contrast between the two characters, which elevates the moment making many feel pretty sorry for Vegeta.

I love Kai's version. I'm a huge Kai fan. Also, the music in the Final Chapter is great. Most people don't realize it but a lot of super's music actually came from DBK The Final Chapter.

I'd say the original Funimation Dub has the most impact. I'm not much of a Falconer fan aside from a few tracks, "Vegeta Knows his Son" being one of them. Also the quote "You are a fool, I am going to crush you and throw you into the wind!" gets my jollies going every time. But best death scream goes to the Kai version.

Not really. With the stupid dialogue changes (Vegeta still using funny names for Goku/Goku being portrayed as an superhero) and the talking over silence it looses impact. The long silence scenes makes it creepy and impactful. You just know that something lies in the air and that its something bad. Your own fantasy is going to work because of the silence.
And then the narration at the end....
Just perfect.

The Game Grumps Let’s Play of Majora’s Mask vegeta surviving his makes more sense to me than 17. Vegetas final explosion is just a ludicrous amount of energy being released from his body. 17 legitimately self destructed and somehow survived.

Faulkoner's score takes the cake for me. I still get chills. It goes from "goku recovers" to "Vegeta gets bean" into "Vegeta knows his son" and then, of course, "Vegeta's them" for the Final Explosion. And then the Narrator's voice “And so one of the earths greatest warriors has vanished in a blinding flash of light, having made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his loved ones, his name was Vegeta, a proud Saiyan Prince”

2001! I remember the long hiatus after that episode and thought the show was over. The joy I got when Toonami finally showed the commercial for the new episodes was equal to the sorrow I had seeing my favorite character disappear in that blinding flash as the narrator gave him a beautiful send off.

Say what you want about the original funimation dub as a whole, but there are certain moments in it that find a way to outshine all other interations. Vegeta's sacrifice imo is one of these moments.
The foreboding Faulconer score subtly waves and builds in the background without distracting the audience with loud trumpets or sharp noises or whatever the Japanese did. Kai's music felt out of place imo as the music placed vegeta in too much of a heroic light when his character is more in line with being an anti- hero.
With Faulconer's score just as it reaches crescendo Vegeta's iconic bell theme kicks in as the exclamation point to help elevate Sabat's battle cry. Vegeta in his final moments went out more like a softer but battle hardened warrior than a complete good guy.The irony that the bells in his theme essentially become death bells ringing as Vegeta sacrafices himself was never lost on me.

That's the problem, the Funi dub tried to make every scene "badass" and edgy, but it comes off as dumb and cringey most of the time. Plus the Kai version had the most emotional and heartfelt music.

The original english dub will always be my favorite. It's what I grew up watching. Christopher Sabat is an amazing voice actor and plays Vegeta so well.
The concluding lines from the narrator are so gut-wrenching. This may very well be my favorite episode of the Buu Saga.
It's not breaking news that the English dub changed lots of dialogues during the whole series from the japanese version lol. I'll stick with the original. Keep up the awesome work Mark!

I like the early funimation dub because although toriyama doesnt think of goku as a hero other characters like piccolo should see what he does and think that he is in universe. Also Ryo Horikawa always does an amazing job but Christopher Sabat is my childhood

The score was what did it for me. All of the animated versions' sweeping visuals were amazing for it, though.
Not only does Trunks' faith in his dad show what Trunks thinks but it also can be considered as motivating Vegeta. The need to protect your own son. The desire, to live up to the person who idolizes you the most, and what they expect. The power of dad is strong. I love all of them and I cried back when I first saw it as a kid. I suppose I like the original Dub for nostalgia sake. But nowadays I love the Kai dub. Followed by the mango.
