Id have to say the manga. all of the animated versions are wonderful and depict it well, but nothing can beat the pacing and feeling i get from the original.
Yeah, it felt like goku wouldnt have needed to learn it anyway, especially since he's been trying incredibly hard to master it, and then goku just gets a form that treats it like utter uselessness, especially since the kaioken isnt a form, its a technique goku uses as a form
I like it for its nostalgia and an homage to the original and the fact it's hype, but as far as storytelling and power scaling goes I don't care about how Goku pulls a x10 on top of his newly obtained SSGSS transformation. It makes Vegeta look like a weakling in comparison and overinflates the rest of the scaling for the anime franchise all because Toei wanted to go off script.
Goku was fully aware of what was at stake. That’s why I like the scene in the water, Goku may not be a perfect hero type but he is certainly a good person who cares a lot about his friends and family Then again, the original manga benefited from not including a scene like that because it kept the tension of the battle always high, adding a moment like that could take away some of the tension by giving Goku and the audience some breathing room. The point is both Toei Animation and Akira Toriyama did a fantastic job and managed to achieve what they strived for in theses scenes

Goku simply refused to attempt to kill Majin Buu just because he wanted to make sure Earth would have capable protectors and completely crippled Nappa (making him unable to fight Goku ever again) and told Vegeta to fuck off without engaging him immediately. Not only that, but just look at him talking about fusion to Vegeta and every other time Goku HAPPILY stepped down to let Gohan take on threats. Goku is aware of his responsibilities and does NOT put himself above his friends and family, even if he does value his fighting desire to an unhealthy amount
My personal pick is the DBZ Kai version. Sure, it kinda misses the whole point of Goku’s character through the dialogue, but that orchestral score, Sean’s beautiful screaming, that beam…this is a moment to remember.
The intent isn't changed at ALL between manga and anime. It is just not as subtextual anymore. Toriyama chose to focus on Goku, isolated as he really was, in this fight. Goku knew he was bested. He had found someone who was truly better than him. His curiosity to test himself was satisfied, he knew the answer he was (and is) looking for (in all his fights). But he knew he couldn't stop fighting this time (see Cell Saga, Goku's forfeit was perfectly in line with who he is; he had a great fight, found his answer, knew he could not do it and was not sad or mad or disappointed, that is just how it is sometimes, sometimes you meet someone better than you so you just go and train to improve to beat him some day, with the only thing special being that he knew Gohan would win, so there was not a worry on his mind. Where was I, again...? Ah, yes.) So back to Namek. He had his answer, his usual goal in a fight was met, but he could not stop or loose, because that meant not only the end for him (which he could've accepted, without hesitation, like with Radditz and Cell, where he knew his loved ones would be safe now) but for all the things and hopes and dreams of everyone he loved and everything he loved and found good in this world. They would loose their way of life, their spirit was in mortal peril. It was, in and for Goku, in fact nothing less but a fight for the survival of everything he and his friends, his loved ones stood for, a fight over the universe's soul. Toriyama chose the stark approach, perfectly, drawn so viscerally. An actor doing that and selling those emotions and thoughts with just his face would be getting every award imaginable and Toriyama pulled it off with a pen and two colors. The anime, as per usual in Japan, is geared towards children way more than manga. Manga is an adult medium, give or take, anime is for kids. And kids do not have the life experience and knowledge and experience of love in all its different forms. So you need to spell it out for them a little more. And sure, in that process some of the deeper and bigger aspects get watered down or pushed into the background, yes. But the important emotion, the central emotional truth of this scene is shown and told in a way even kids who don't know what all this really means/feels/lives like do get it. Understand the stakes. Understand the motives. Understand Goku's absolute selflessness. Understand that from here on out, Goku is not just Goku anymore, Goku is more than human (or, well, Saiyan), he isn't even Goku anymore, he is nothing at all. Not a thing, not a living being, nothing formed of matter. Goku has become something more. He ascended. He transformed into something beyond all that, something higher than that, something SUPER to all that. He is the force of his love for and his faith in their way of life, their spirit, given form in the flesh. (Tangent on why he is NOT the Super Saiyan here, already: He still fights with honor, with goodness, with his ideals as a martial artist, of course for those ideals. He can't beat Freezer, because his heart is too naive. Pure, yes, but naive. And only by losing Krillin, a price he cannot bear to pay, a price that rips his heart asunder, the pain is so gigantic that even stubborn, noble, proud Goku breaks and just hurts and forgets his high ideals and his pride and in that instant, his terrible might explodes out of him and burns with the fire of a thousand suns in order to do one thing and one thing only: eradicate Freezer. It is his "love, his pain and all his sorrow" (I love TFS so much... they just GET it.) given form. He still does not want to kill anyone. Not even Freezer. And he hates Freezer for making him do it. Because there, even "dumb" (just stubborn) Goku realizes, that sometimes, there is evil so big, so nastily unforgivably terrifying, that it cannot be reasoned with, it cannot be controlled, it cannot be rehabilitated. It just. Needs. To. Go. And so he takes the form of absolute destruction, ascended above anything unnecessary: the Super Saiyan.)

I really wanted to introduce a format that would allow you guys to decide the conclusion. I wanted somewhere I could gush about my favourite scenes, explain why I thought they were great and to point out the differences between versions. Like an fun educational video that everyone got to take part in :)

Awesome video! This is also one of my favorite scenes. The funimation version has an extra punching sound during Goku's Kaio-Ken x20 attack. This makes it sound like Freeza was hit twice when he clearly dodged Goku's second punch
I have to agree. When it comes to an animated version of the scene, Kai did it best if you ask me. Sean Schemel and Chris Ayres are both FANTASTIC in this scene.

I watch the full Goku Freeza fight at least once every few months. It's so good and I remember exactly what I was doing when I first saw it on Toonami. I didn't see the first run cause I was like 4 when it came out so I didn't have the legendary waits while funi worked on finishing the dub luckily. I got to just see every episode day after day. Coming home from school was such a treat.

I voted for the manga due to Akira Toriyama straying away the stereotypical hero stereotype (Yes, I am aware that I used two almost identical words in the same sentence), and Goku's doubt at the beginning (and shock that he wasn't bluffing). Although Dragon Ball Z Kai had nearly the same structure as the manga, I just like manga more but I still do like the other sorts of mediums used to show the scene (animation, as an example) Lmao, the other mediums I can think of is just animation

In the original anime Goku literally rose from the water to attack Freeza in blinded rage due to him having a sort of ephiphany of what would happen if Freeza did won, and involved everyone he ever cared about dying horribly. Just because modern Dragon Ball media flanderize Goku’s fondness with fighting, doesn’t mean he was always like that.
Dude you make the best Dragon Ball videos on TH-cam. Kai will always be the quintessential way to experience Dragon Ball Z for me. The coloring is much more refined, it gets straight to the point, and the dialogue from the actors is heavily improved.
@@ilyte1 Honestly I still think the movie does it better than DBZA. I know DBZA did most things better but their comedic focus of the History of Trunks actively took away from that scene. I want to cry when I see the movie, I feel very little when I see the abridged or episode version.
The manga is okay. For me the Japanese broadcast has amazing dialogue that really emphasizes on the kaioken. I love the way Nozawa says "Fifty percent power he says" it sounds so good. I love how Funi emphasizes on the moment and how Goku didnt care if Frieza was stronger than him, he wasn't going to let his family and friends down. Its very emotional. Plus Embodiment of Fire is an awesome title. I love how Kai emphasized on the attack and moment. Plus I love the way Sean says "I gotta give it my all and show this guy you do not mess with me and my friend." TFS was funny. Cant wait for the next Who did it Better. Its hard to decide but the Jap dub is the one I watch on TH-cam more.
This was the scene that got me into Dragonball Z. My cousin lent me a VHS tape with Simpsons episodes he had recorded and I had finished watching an episode and then left to get snacks because I thought the tape was done and just left it running. Turns out there was another show at the tail end and it was the last 15 minutes of this episode. It was in japanese and I had no idea what was going on but it was the coolest thing Id ever seen! The finale with Goku charging up the 20x kamehameha and the music left me stuned. Took me YEARS to finally understand what Id watched but its always stuck with me and is my favorite scene
"and I don't care if you're a million times stronger" always gives me goosebumps! I watched this on toonami in 1999 and I still remember this line. Definitely the original toonami dub for me.
I do love Masako Nozawa's voice for Goku. But I've always preferred Shaun's performace shearly for the fact of how much he puts into his lines. I'd probably choose the funimation dub just for that fact.
No doubt in my mind. I believe the dubbed Kai version is the perfect version of this scene. The amount of times I have re-experienced this scene in that form rivals that of my re-watching of other anime fights.
Dude the narration was great, when you read the manga. Each video I watch seems more of like a documentary, and kind of reminds me of watchmojo and blah blah blah. THIS IS NOT A BAD THING, your videos are getting better and better man, great job keep it up! You can really tell you love what you do hahaha it’s awesome
i don't even hate the original dbz dub like so many of these youtubers and purists, but a scene like this it cannot compete. this part of z was still some of the earliest work funimation and its VAs ever did which is why they all sound different even when just comparing them to their voices in the season 1 and season 4 sets of dbz. (not talking about kai) funimation only started right about the time ginyu vs goku fight happened.
I don't hate the dub per se. But I did feel that their acting was wooden until Buu, and the script changes changed a lot of nuance and character motivation. One example is before Freeza gets to earth. In the original, Vegeta chews everyone out for not focusing on hiding their power, reminding them about scouters. As the former member of Freeza's army, this makes sense. He then grudgingly complements Piccolo for not making this mistake and actually acting like a real warrior, leading to shock from the humans who didn't even know he was there. In the old dub, the scene basically became a meme ("as a matter of fact... "). Vegeta screams at them to keep quiet (what?) because Freeza might... Hear them... From his space ship? Then throws an insult about them scaring Piccolo. It just makes no sense and doesn't synch up with the footage. That sort of thing was common. But once Barry Watson left and Chris Sabat + Justin Cook had more say in the company (circa the Buu Saga) things got a LOT better.
I only owned 1 manga volume growing up and it was the volume covering this scene. However, Yamamoto's score used in this scene "Yushi No Gaisen" is one of my favs and made this scene more special than when I saw/read the other versions.
My introduction to the Dragon Ball anime was this episode from the Funimation dub back in the day so I gotta say Funimation dub is my favorite for nostalgia purposes and its the first episode I ever seen

One of your next videos should be the different versions of Goku's "I am a Super Saiyan" speech, also known as his "Ally to good, nightmare to you" speech from the old Funi dub. Of course, the DBZ Kai dub nailed that scene both voice acting-wise from Sean's end and accuracy to the Japanese script.
@@Johten Funimation dubs for Dragon Ball uses several times more words than the original script. It wasn't made for an ADHD audience and there was plenty of minute long pauses in dialog.
dan smith so? It doesn’t have to be freaking word for word. That is what makes a dub good for me. Whats the point of listening to a word for word dub anyway. A dub is good in my opinion when its original and doesn’t stick to the source material, thats plain boring and unimaginative. There were many times in Super where I can say thank goodness for Chris Sabat’s genius directing.

I prefer the manga version, especially since i've read it in french and english and it just gives me hype every time! also...why no DBZA? The running gag of Kaio what is gold and makes the kaioken a lot more prominent. Great video as always mark!

When I watched the Sayian saga on the Funimation Streaming service, it did not have bruce falconer’s score like on here in the original 1991 America dub, nor did it have Kai’s score. It had the music you played from the manga and at the end. Why is this, or what version is that I guess? Thanks
What you heard was Kikuchis Track. It is played in DBZ and Kai till the end of the Cell Arc since Yamamoto was fired because of his plagiarism. Funimation can also be heard with Bruce Falconer or Kikuchi and I guess you heard the Funimation Dub with Kikuchis Music
If I was responsible for the animate version I would have had a shot pan to Goku after Frieza stopped the Kamehameha. The shot would have Goku with a look on his face that can only be described as one of pure fear and the face of someone who lost all resolve to keep fighting with an inner monologue saying, "He wasn't bluffing" in the most distraught voice Sean Schemmel could must
i don't get why people always get on the animation staff for changing style. Toriyama changed his style, and the show style evolved to reflect the change in the manga
I think the Kai version did it best because not only the Japanese version had minor differences than its original adaptation which was great, but also the English Dub made it way better than its original adaptation. Sean gained the experience needed to make the scene better than his performance in 1999, putting in more emotion for Goku in that scene.
I'm so glad to see that other people love this scene. As a kid someone gave me three or four vhs tapes of Dragon Ball Z, out of order but all in the Namek saga, and for my whole childhood that was all I knew of Dragon Ball. This is the scene that stuck in my head and made me seek this series out as an adult.

Sean’s performance in the Kai version has so much heart and energy, especially his screams, I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t the best version.
Sean's scream is more of a roar and I absolutely love it, as much of a scumbag he is IRL, I still say he is my definitive Goku.

Awesome video! This is also one of my favorite scenes. The funimation version has an extra punching sound during Goku's Kaio-Ken x20 attack. This makes it sound like Freeza was hit twice when he clearly dodged Goku's second punch

I have to agree. When it comes to an animated version of the scene, Kai did it best if you ask me. Sean Schemel and Chris Ayres are both FANTASTIC in this scene.

I watch the full Goku Freeza fight at least once every few months. It's so good and I remember exactly what I was doing when I first saw it on Toonami. I didn't see the first run cause I was like 4 when it came out so I didn't have the legendary waits while funi worked on finishing the dub luckily. I got to just see every episode day after day. Coming home from school was such a treat.

Manga- Toriyama’s action style portrays the impact of the blast so well!
I voted for the manga due to Akira Toriyama straying away the stereotypical hero stereotype (Yes, I am aware that I used two almost identical words in the same sentence), and Goku's doubt at the beginning (and shock that he wasn't bluffing).
Although Dragon Ball Z Kai had nearly the same structure as the manga, I just like manga more but I still do like the other sorts of mediums used to show the scene (animation, as an example)

I grew up with the Kai series and this was by far one of the most suspenseful moments in the Dragonball timeline
Frieza being alive after the Spirit Bomb, Piccolo being injured and Krillin dying, with Goku going Super Saiyan. That should be next.

The manga is okay. For me the Japanese broadcast has amazing dialogue that really emphasizes on the kaioken. I love the way Nozawa says "Fifty percent power he says" it sounds so good. I love how Funi emphasizes on the moment and how Goku didnt care if Frieza was stronger than him, he wasn't going to let his family and friends down. Its very emotional. Plus Embodiment of Fire is an awesome title. I love how Kai emphasized on the attack and moment. Plus I love the way Sean says "I gotta give it my all and show this guy you do not mess with me and my friend." TFS was funny. Cant wait for the next Who did it Better. Its hard to decide but the Jap dub is the one I watch on TH-cam more.
This was the scene that got me into Dragonball Z. My cousin lent me a VHS tape with Simpsons episodes he had recorded and I had finished watching an episode and then left to get snacks because I thought the tape was done and just left it running.
Turns out there was another show at the tail end and it was the last 15 minutes of this episode. It was in japanese and I had no idea what was going on but it was the coolest thing Id ever seen! The finale with Goku charging up the 20x kamehameha and the music left me stuned. Took me YEARS to finally understand what Id watched but its always stuck with me and is my favorite scene
"and I don't care if you're a million times stronger" always gives me goosebumps! I watched this on toonami in 1999 and I still remember this line. Definitely the original toonami dub for me.
The ending of you doing kamehameha is basically everyone when they were kids.

I do love Masako Nozawa's voice for Goku. But I've always preferred Shaun's performace shearly for the fact of how much he puts into his lines. I'd probably choose the funimation dub just for that fact.

No doubt in my mind. I believe the dubbed Kai version is the perfect version of this scene. The amount of times I have re-experienced this scene in that form rivals that of my re-watching of other anime fights.

i don't even hate the original dbz dub like so many of these youtubers and purists, but a scene like this it cannot compete. this part of z was still some of the earliest work funimation and its VAs ever did which is why they all sound different even when just comparing them to their voices in the season 1 and season 4 sets of dbz. (not talking about kai) funimation only started right about the time ginyu vs goku fight happened.
I don't hate the dub per se. But I did feel that their acting was wooden until Buu, and the script changes changed a lot of nuance and character motivation.
One example is before Freeza gets to earth. In the original, Vegeta chews everyone out for not focusing on hiding their power, reminding them about scouters. As the former member of Freeza's army, this makes sense. He then grudgingly complements Piccolo for not making this mistake and actually acting like a real warrior, leading to shock from the humans who didn't even know he was there. In the old dub, the scene basically became a meme ("as a matter of fact... "). Vegeta screams at them to keep quiet (what?) because Freeza might... Hear them... From his space ship? Then throws an insult about them scaring Piccolo. It just makes no sense and doesn't synch up with the footage. That sort of thing was common.
But once Barry Watson left and Chris Sabat + Justin Cook had more say in the company (circa the Buu Saga) things got a LOT better.
I only owned 1 manga volume growing up and it was the volume covering this scene. However, Yamamoto's score used in this scene "Yushi No Gaisen" is one of my favs and made this scene more special than when I saw/read the other versions.

My introduction to the Dragon Ball anime was this episode from the Funimation dub back in the day so I gotta say Funimation dub is my favorite for nostalgia purposes and its the first episode I ever seen

Kai's english version is quite literally my favorite scene in the entirety of dragon ball.
One of your next videos should be the different versions of Goku's "I am a Super Saiyan" speech, also known as his "Ally to good, nightmare to you" speech from the old Funi dub. Of course, the DBZ Kai dub nailed that scene both voice acting-wise from Sean's end and accuracy to the Japanese script.

@@Johten Funimation dubs for Dragon Ball uses several times more words than the original script. It wasn't made for an ADHD audience and there was plenty of minute long pauses in dialog.

A dub is good in my opinion when its original and doesn’t stick to the source material, thats plain boring and unimaginative. There were many times in Super where I can say thank goodness for Chris Sabat’s genius directing.

Hey Mark, great video. I enjoyed watching and comparing the different versions of this great scene. I just had a quick question. When I watched the Sayian saga on the Funimation Streaming service, it did not have bruce falconer’s score like on here in the original 1991 America dub, nor did it have Kai’s score. It had the music you played from the manga and at the end. Why is this, or what version is that I guess? Thanks
What you heard was Kikuchis Track.
It is played in DBZ and Kai till the end of the Cell Arc since Yamamoto was fired because of his plagiarism.
Funimation can also be heard with Bruce Falconer or Kikuchi and I guess you heard the Funimation Dub with Kikuchis Music

The Kai soundtrack is just to dang good, the music makes it a 100 times more epic than the other versions in my opinion.

I think the Kai version did it best because not only the Japanese version had minor differences than its original adaptation which was great, but also the English Dub made it way better than its original adaptation. Sean gained the experience needed to make the scene better than his performance in 1999, putting in more emotion for Goku in that scene.
Now I feel like they should make an LR Kioken X20 Kamehameha Goku in dokkan
I'm so glad to see that other people love this scene. As a kid someone gave me three or four vhs tapes of Dragon Ball Z, out of order but all in the Namek saga, and for my whole childhood that was all I knew of Dragon Ball. This is the scene that stuck in my head and made me seek this series out as an adult.
