- This pattern is one that I have made several times. I like to make it monochromatic. I have never had it fail. It just always looks SO lovely to me!! Hope if you haven't made a wonky rail fence, you give it a try and let me know if it was as fun for you as I think it is for me!!
I really appreciate that you don’t waste any time in your videos. You get right to it and always have helpful information. It’s also a great to watch you work. Thanks for valuing our time (and yours)! 😊
I appreciate that!
This podcast came at just the right time for me - overwhelmed by a 30 year stash, tired of precision and pre-designed blocks - but still wanting to be productive by making charity quilts. I may spend all winter doing this pattern! Thank you for this inspirational tutorial.
Ditto!
Same here!!!
Love these blocks, and I especially love your style of videos and teaching. Thank you for your open and frank thoughts on creating. Inspiring!
I just love your philosophy - you’re absolutely right about quantity. As soon as you start worrying about how many strips you need, the fun goes out of it. Beautiful quilt! Xx Deb 🤗
I love rail fence quilts! I will use pinks and purples for my next on. Those colors make me smile and I have a whole bunch of them! Thanks for your delightful video!
Beautiful!! I love the rail fence and just like you, I love wonky...it's much more interesting and fun. Who needs stress when sewing..lol. not moi. TY, I love your voice and you're a funny lady. Cheers from sunny FL
I love your videos and your practical approach to improv/scrappy quilting. It makes me happy whenever I see you've posted a new video!
Thank you so much!
I am SO happy you came up in my choices!!! In several of your videos I have seen, you say, “It just makes my heart happy”, that is something I say and look for! You’re speaking my language!! 🤗😃. This project looks very freeing and I am looking forward to doing this! Thank YOU! ♥️
Thank you for watching and for the sweet, kind comment!
Finally!! I have been quilting for decades and I finally found you. What you do makes sense and I love your presentation. I love your quilts. I love your use of color. All the "correct" ways have never made sense to me, but you DO! And I've always changed every pattern I have ever used anyway, so why not have some FUN?!?! After watching a handful of your videos, I stayed up until 3am a couple of nights ago - completely changing (fixing!) my scrap baskets. Now I'm excited about getting started again after avoiding my machine for the last 5 years. I'm so grateful to you, thank you. Away from odd, toward even. Number and pin - for so many reasons (no more stacking and forgetting where I was!!). I got some flower pins and wrote numbers on 2 dozen of them, so I can (hopefully) keep it all straight. I have learned more in 3 days than I have in many, many classes and hours/days/months pouring over magazines!
What a gift you are! Thank you! No more agonizing over a baby quilt!
The first one is going to be primaries for a baby quilt! My first baby quilt for 12 years, because I got SO tired of the disappearing 9 patch and how limiting it felt. And not wanting to make something complicated for a baby to use for a year. Moms don't use the perfect ones anyway... they "save" them.
Now, thanks to you, I know the 9 patch that I start with doesn't need to be perfect!! (and boring!)
Gosh, I'm so excited about quilting again that I'm babbling. I can't thank you enough.
I'm so happy that you feel Happy and Inspired. I hope too that you love your new scrap system.
Best wishes for loads of fun creating in the days, and weeks, and months to come!!
I’m glad I found your channel, lovely quilt great teaching
Such a kind comment. Thank you.
I absolutely love this! When I wanted to start quilting, i would buy material from estate sales,.so it was made for scrap quilts while i was learning to make quilt tops. I love this idea and your approach.
Wonderful!
Great quilt. It would be fun in two colors with one color in one direction and the other the opposite!
I SO agree!
I need a pink one. What an easy way to make a SMALL dent in your scrap tub😂. I want to see if you can get the lid on easier now. 5 more quilts like that?
Let me say first off that your voice is so soothing to me! I could listen to you all day! Rail fence is the first pattern I pieced when I started quilting. I still love it and find it fun. I have never tried it this way but guess what I plan to do tomorrow!! ❤
Wow, thank you!
I agree. There's something mesmerizing in her voice. It makes you feel like you can do anything!!
Oh my, I love how your monochromatic quilt turned out. I am not usually a fan of wonky blocks but since you limited your fabrics to one color even though there are a lot of variations in tones it works beautifully. Thanks for sharing!
That’s so thoughtful of you Marsha, Thanks for your positive review,How are you and how’s the weather over there?
At a glance it's not that wonky, it would be good for beginners not to worry too much about being perfect
Yes, it can be made as wonky as wanted.
I love the green quilt it looks so good, and is such a simple looking pattern. I might need to make a purple one 😊
thank you for making quilts with us. i want to do yellow
My scrap loving heart is celebrating your creativity!!! LOVE your videos!!! My favorite color is yellow, but I find I buy a ton of blue so my fence rail will be blue.
I always want to choose blue!!
Short, informative, and inspiring! Thank you!
Great video! Great quilt! I think I want to get my two granddaughters to each pick out a color and we'll make these quilts together. So fun!
This pattern would work SO WELL with your granddaughters!
Wonky is wonderful & playful…I’m right with you on that!
Thank you for your comments!!
Beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing. ❤👍from Somerset, UK
Thank you very much!
I have many scraps of teal and blue green batiks. I think they will make a beautiful quilt. Thank you for sharing. 💕
I love the math, lol. You've given me the perfect starter project for a friend!! My neice gifted me with lots of left over fabric strips. Love your style!
Have SO MUCH fun!!
This method is so freeing! and I always love monochromatic quilts.
I totally agree!
You started with a couple of boxes of uninspiring scraps and created an amazing quilt 🤩 Love the quilting too 👏👏🇬🇧
Oh thank you!
Ha! Just found you and WHAT a delight you are!! Thank you-great demo!!
Oh thank you!
I love, love, love doing scrappy wonky quilt blocks! So relaxing and fun. Thanks for your video!
Thanks for watching!
I love using monochromatic colors for quilts. Thank you for another great use of scraps!
I also LOVE wonky.❤
Another great quilt. Thank you. I off to look at all the strings I have already.
I'm getting Deadly String Build Up (DSBU) in all the colors, so this is the perfect way to use them! I think I'll start with blue :)
I love this quilt and your video. Your brain works like mine. Scrappy is happy. ❤️❤️❤️
I love the color green ❤this video made my heart happy! Thanks for sharing! I like how you work with color! You inspire me😊 have a blessed day!!!!
Thank you so much!
Your videos are always short and entertaining! Always time to watch and always worthwhile.
This is a perfect technique for the monthly RSC challenge.
Love how much fun you have. I give most of my scraps away, but granddaughter #2 gets them and she will love this video.
Great plan to share!
love the greens. so inspiring watching you work. thanks for sharing. patti in florida
👒☘️It looks like the fields in Ireland. Very pretty!
It does!
YAY! I love this! I look forward to watching more of your videos.
More to come!
Thanks for the gorgeous reminder that sometimes simpler is best! Love your videos
So true! Thank you!
I love listening to you. You seem to always be happy playing with your fabric. I appreciate how you press so your work looks neat. Thank you for sharing. I have a lot of tie dyed indigo fat quarters and yardage. I want to do a quilt for a 20 yr old grandson…..that he can use for everything.
Thank you for your kind comment. I wish you SO MUCH FUN with your fabric!
Love this quilt and your scrappy method. I have greens and pinks and think I will do one of each. Thank you!!!
Wonderful!
I’m new to quilting. I’ve purchased a jelly roll of batiks, as well as other fabrics and charm packs. I often resist starting a new project because it seems so overwhelming. This quilt is perfect for my level of experience and for the jelly roll that I have. Love your relaxed style. Thank you.
Have so much fun!!
Omgosh I can’t tell you how much I love this ❤❤❤
I'm glad you like it!
A lovely quilt and a great idea, perfectly explained. Thank you! 😊⚘️
Edit: I spent today cutting blue strips from my stash and my small pile of scraps. Wish I had more variation in my scraps!
Enjoy sewing!
What a great cutter u r using. Never seen one like it.
I do love it. You can learn about it in my tools video.
Beautiful quilt and so simple. And there are other layout designs for the rails too. Scrappy (by design) and simple.... can't beat it. Thanks for the video 😊
Good point about the layout options.
Really fun and beautiful project, thank you for making this video.
Thanks for watching!
It's darling Dawn, I need to get my scraps out and do this!!😊😊
Yes, it is perfect peaceful fun!! I've been thinking a lot about you. I love it when I see your comments.
Love this one - I'm a big scrappy fan as well
It is so fun to sew!
Absolutely beautiful!
Fabulous!!!!! ❤
Beautiful!
Great, quick, and fun tutorial! Thanks!
How gorgeous! Thanks for all your inspirational videos!
Really like the monochromatic look but I tend to have more scrappy colors left over from projects. Like the ruler method too. Thanks for a great video! 😊
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Wonderful. Love, love, love your approach ❤️
I am loving reading your comments. Thank you!!
What a beautiful quilt. Thanks for the idea
I absolutely loved this video. I have so many scraps that I have to use up. I can’t wait to try this!
I love watching all your demos Thank you for spending your time to show us these great quilts ❤❤
This quilt is beautiful!
Love this video! I think the hardest part for me will be picking the color way when I make my first one!!!
First is right. They are a tiny bit addictive!
I enjoy your videos and your quilts!! Keep up the good work.
Great video! Thank you so much! I will be giving this a go for sure! Happy sewing!
Magnificent!! (I may be biased towards green but) that is well done indeed. A pleasure to find you & your work!
Thank you! 😊
I know some Folks have a hard time just winging it, like trying stuff out casually. You encouraged that so nicely!
Your blocks and resulting quilt are great, thank you for sharing your planning and construction ideas. The monochromatic theme is inspiring and I absolutely LOVE green.
Thank you so much!
I absolutely love the freedom of scrappy! I’m working on a pink scrappy.
This looks so fun! And since its wonky, I could probably make one! Great instructions..thanks!! Oh, I'd make mine in either purples or oranges!
Very cute!
Beautiful
Great idea just love this ! 😊
it is a fun one!
Beautiful! I love that you are so free with it. These colors are gorgeous! 💚
It is a lot of fun to make!
Very beautiful. Thank you!
Our pleasure!
I love this! I want to make mine in blues!
I love watching you play. I did this with some smaller blue scraps a couple of weeks ago. Only 6.5 squares need more but it’s so fun. Thanks for sharing your joy. ❤️😄
That is awesome!
Start with a box of any " mostly-color" randoms and go for it. ))) A littttle more control than total crumb... which I also LOVE to play with. This is a completely PLAY quilt )))))) I like mine double, extra long, biiiiiig hang-overs at the sides. That ends up twice a "normal" quilt size, but this looks like a two day top. ))))
It is pretty fast to make!
love it
On my numbers for my rows, I add an arrow with my pressing direction.
I am trying to find an easy quilt from layer cakes. Just learning maybe cut in half and lay different ways like you are doing. I have camping layer cakes and my son will be 60 in September and would be nice a quick and easy one. Thank you I love your quilt.
You are so welcome! Have fun.
Absolutely GORGEOUS! I LOVE the green fabrics and the quilting is awesome. Thank you for sharing ☺️
I so appreciate your comments!
@@merrymabelmarket You are so welcome! Scrappy is my favorite quilting method 💕💕. Your quilt was stunning and inspiring 🥰
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love your channel!! Your approach to quilting has been an eye-opener for me. I'm too "anal" and it's hard for me to just relax and have fun with quilting. I'm 76 and was taught to "follow the rules" in everything in life (not that I always did...haha), so I like that you don't have (too many) rules :) I wish you had videos more often.
I love your comment. If it's not fun - I don't really want to do it!! Tee hee... so I do always try to make everything fun.
Magical !
And FUN!!
I would like to make a blue scrappy quilt. Maybe a whole colored scrappy quilt seems nice too.
Yes!
Il est magnifique
Making one in blues. So fun!
Great plan. I love blues!
This is so pretty. I think I need to make a red one. Thanks for sharing.
I am enjoying your videos. In this one, I noticed your pin cushion. It seemed unusual. I would love to see a bigger photo. Will you please include one in your next video? Thanks very much. I am planning to do the rail fence quilt, as you demonstrated. Thanks for your channel..
I think you can see it better in the first couple of videos we made. Try the "Trip Around the World" video, and you will see me grab it. It is a crystal container that my mother bought me years ago. It is supposed to be a "cart". I just fill it with pins.
I have had people HATE it because they think pins are too pokey like that. I LOVE IT. I do have pin cushions....but I prefer to keep my pins in "crystal". Because I use them and put them back away in little handfuls. So, I just put them away with the ball end up. (I know, weird.)
I am new to your channel and I have to say I love watching you make these beautiful quilts! I am wanting to try to quilt, but I am really bad at colors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. ❤
I don't know who taught you that you are bad at color, but I would love to change your belief. Color takes experience. Give yourself permission to relax and just CHOOSE what you like. Color is so subjective. Just make what you like.
I like to study quilts online and decide if I like them or not and WHY. It's usually due to color placement. So analyzing different quilts will help you learn about your preferences. If you google any quilt pattern and then hit "images" you can look at a variety of colors in similar styles of quilts.
@@merrymabelmarket thank you so much. I just feel I lack putting colors together. I am wanting to quilt some placemats for my mom. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Looking forward to your next video. ❤️
@@klvoshall6799Have you done the mats yet?? This would make beautiful place mats!! If you have fabric, cut some strips in all the colors, drop them in a little basket and mix them all up thoroughly. Then, don't even look at the colors, just reach down and grab a couple. Don't judge them. Don't think. Sew them together. Keep doing it until you have enough squares. Your mom will LOVE all the colors and you will have taken the hardest step... the first one! I just watched this yesterday and I'm starting one today! And I just had an idea so you can practice make one side her favorite color (say all blues) and the other side greens, 6 inch squares in a 2 x 3 layout. Go to your local quilt store and see if they sell bags of scraps (if you don't have any). That way you play the hand you are dealt and you don't agonize over colors (and you save money).
@@Cy-bz9jh Ooh, thank you for the wonderful idea!! No I haven't tried this yet as I'm intimidated by colors. I love your idea!! Now I will try it! Thank you again!! Good luck with yours!
love love love
Me too!
Very pretty ❤ i did one in pink.😊
I bet it is BEEEaUtiful!!!
@@merrymabelmarket thank you. It's a little donation quilt and I just finished it yesterday. So you video was very timely😊
Wow! This is absolutely gorgeous! Just like all the quilts you show us. I love the quilting too. I’ve got a few quilt tops to show you. Can’t wait to make one of these next....do you think red, white and blue will look ok?
Red, White and Blue will be SO fun!!
Wird fantastisch!
Love your video! Rail fence is one of my favorites but I haven’t made a monochromatic one yet so a green one is on my list. May I ask what brand/weight of thread you use in your long arm? I’ve recently purchased a long arm (total beginner) and am trying to figure out what thread to start out with. Looking forward to your next video!
I really like your teaching style too. I usually don't go for this type of quilt, but this assort of greens I really like! Can't decide on the color so I'm thinking I might try jewel tones 😊
Your thoughts on this? 😊
Sounds like fun.
❤❤❤❤
Blue
Is there a specific reason you start/number your rows from the bottom up? Thx and did you do the quilting FMQ on a long arm or domestic?
I just do it that way to always be consistent with myself. I have a longarm.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I recently purchased a layer cake that is textured....not solids.... but textured.....very plain....in tan, yellow, orange, violet, purple , green, light blue, dark blue, gray & black. All of them have the same texture print....just the colors are different. Do you think this layer cake would be ok for this pattern?
I have seen this pattern done in multicolors. So - why not?
