My very first quilt was a log cabin. I love it. I hand quilted it and learned to sew in it. There are so many mistakes in it but I don’t care it’s mine. Oh and it took me 15 years to complete it. Lol
It just so happens that a scrappy log cabin is on my to-do list after I am finished with a couple more projects (complete with scraps to add to what I have), so this terrific video came right on time for me to start mentally planning. 😊 I adore how yours turned out! What a beautiful heirloom gift!

Feathers took me awhile too. That is actually when I designed the wonky feathers. Regular feathers were tricky to learn for me. I did learn them and love to do them now. But, the wonky feathers are just so happy and free, that I do them often.

I think that you are talking about my "thread saver"... I teach about it on the following video at 3:09 if you want to see how I make it. I use it to keep my thread from snarling up. It's a quilter trick. th-cam.com/video/chQA2bu6MZA/w-d-xo.html Usually I just sew from project to project, but when I teach on film, a thread saver is usually less confusing for those watching.
I've had quilting as my main hobby for over 30 years. I've been blessed to buy fabric from a couple of estate sales as well as fabric shops. I only keep what I love. My scrap savor system works well for me. I hope this answer helps. I consider fabric to be my "art material" for creating.
For the centers, red is for the heart of the home, and yellow is for the light of the home. I love it! I struggle with wonky and also with scrappy. It’s my OCD!😂
I love the way you go about making quilts. It feels casual, and very much "you do you" and it makes my heart happy and makes me more confident because I am self taught and still a beginner and I very much just do what makes me happy.

I thought you said you decided not to use the lights.
There were a few in there - but most of them used medium blues, and darker blues. The contrast on the blue side was better that way.
