1975 Honda TL125 K2 Full Restoration Part 1 ( Frame Restoration )

  • Another year another big restoration project.
This year it is the turn of my 1975 Honda TL125 K2 but more of that in a second.
Due to a few requests i have now started a Patreon page. If you like what im doing with the channel and want to help support the channel and help it grow the feel free to make a small donation.
    patreon.com/ReallyRandomChannel
Anyway onto the bike. As you may remember i restored the tank from this bike in a previous video for the previous owner of the bike. his intention was to have me restore the tank and that would give him the inspiration to get on with the rest of the bike but sadly this was not the case. So i made him an offer on it and now its mine to restore back to its former glory.
It was initially found lying in a barn parted out and whats left is all that you see in the video so theres a lot of bits ill need to source, easier said than done! No one even knows if it runs as whoever parted it out has been long forgotten in the sands of time, then my friend stepped in saved it from the barn and now its in my possession.
So the first job was to finish what had been started and that was stripping it down. It didnt take long as none of the bolts were seized and a lot had been replaced with cap screws so that tells me someone has cared for this bike at some point.
After it was all stripped it was given a throughout cleaning before i applied the paint stripper and started stripping the old fashioned messy way as the frame wont fit in my blaster and i dont want to send the frame out for blasting as i want to do everything on the bike myself.
Once the paint was off i was surprised to see that the frame was in really nice condition apart from the surface rust that had spidered its way under the paint and to just about every corner of the frame. But no matter a selection of wire wheels and grinding discs would make short work of it!
After wire brushing i filled a couple of small dents in the frame , i used filler as they were so small they didnt warrant getting a stud welded to them and being pulled out. Then i degreased every part of the frame before coating in etch primer to prepare the surface for the high build 2k primer. High build was used to fill in all of the small crater left behind from when i removed the rust.
After baking the primer was hard enough to begin the wet flatting process, technically this is not need on a frame as most of it is never seen when the bike is built but this is Really Random Channel and if a job is worth doing its worth over doing! When the sanding was complete i re-etched a few areas of rub through then proceeded with a nice glossy coat of black to finish of the frame restoration.
As you can see from the results it turned out fantastic! This project is shaping up to be a good one!
Stay tuned for episode 2 coming soon ;)
A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.
If you like what you see and have any ideas for the channel or would even like to donate something to restore to the channel please get in touch. :)
And as usual if you liked the video please like share and subscribe and help the channel grow.

Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.

I bought one of these New in 1976. Great little bike. Rode the wheels right off it. Did a total rebuild on it like this one in 1985. Made it like new for less than a third the cost of a new bike and about 30 hours of my cheap labor. Honda makes good products! Then and Now!

I never watch TV anymore and I could watch you work for hours. You knew we have been looking forward to this one especially. That baby was built the same year as my high school graduation. At that time i was riding a Yamaha RD350 but I have always loved the Enduros and who doesn't love a Honda especially. Thanks for letting us into your world I appreciate it.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Bert de Vries from the Netherlands. I hooked on to your channel and I am amassed by the beautiful work your doing. This bike is from 1975 and that frame is in outstanding condition. Almost no rust. You prepared your work very well. This is so important to achieve a preteen end result. So sorry if i make some mistakes in my English.
This kind of content is so important to me because I love to watch how people like you, rebuilding that good old stuff and make it look like new.
I did do such a project years ago but now, because of my injuries, I can't do it anymore. I am registered for euthanasia. I am 55 years of age and fighting horrible pain for about 16 years.
Your content my friend helps me to make it thru the day. I saw that video you painting the tank, and was amazed about the results. So I decided to hook you up and subscribed at your amazing channel.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Until next time in another comment.
Sincerely Bert de Vries from Hillegom the Netherlands

I have commented on your video's before but must reiterate how much I enjoy your video's sans the goofy music and /or on going commentary that so many other videographers do. Your camera and editing work is great!
I have just started watching this series on your 1975 Honda 125 restoration project with interest, for I have four XL 250's and three or four engines. Your frame preparation is like I do, although time consuming, but rewarding. I have a friend, Mr Got Rocks, who would of sent it out to a powder coating guy and a few hundred dollars later, get a beautiful frame in return. (nothing wrong with that) but for me I ain't got no yenom to go that route.
Look forward to the rest of the series.

Trials Bikes are kind of rare as they weren't as popular as Moto-Cross/Enduro models. Only knew a couple of guys that rode Trials. But maybe that's was a USA thing over the EU?? Sure Honda shared parts(at least engine and running parts) with the other models. Could be quite the search to hunt down all the unique bits you'll need. Off to a good start as the frame looks great!! Looking forward to future episodes!

I did try and buy the bike when i was asked to do the tank but he wasn't for selling it. I think he got tired of me asking if he has started restoring it yet every 5 mins so he caved in and sold it to me haha.

since you don't have a large blasting cabinet - may i respectfully recommend creating a temporary booth out of plastic, 1 x 2 timber and a fan to thru a home made filter and open blast? messy but it will get the job done.
