I agree with Lockstin, considering the 1st three Pokemon after frickin "God", are all dragon types that _created the universe._
And since arceus is like every type it is also technically Dragon type
I kind of agree with some of this, but instead of Dragons representing pure magic or infinity energy, I believe they are the users of "raw primal power". And by primal, I don't mean primary, but rather of a crude or unrefined nature, like "primal" instincts.
I see Infinity Energy as the Source, what all things are made of, but rearranged into whatever physical form it needs to be, whether that be light or elements or any of the types. Dragon type is another form of this energy, but unlike the others, it is undefined and raw, basically the first and simplest conversion of the Infinite into a useful form. However, because it is so simple, it lacks the distinct characteristics of the other types; it just is. This also has the advantage of being extremely powerful, albeit hard to control. All of the energy is in power, and none in utility.
That's why dragons are so powerful, yet vague and varied. They are simply power personified, taking whatever form suits them. And because they're so ancient, that form is usually reptilian or serpentine.
This power also applies to the real world and why in almost every culture, dragons are unanimously considered both amcient and extremely powerful, though usually not representing the creator-deity, which would be the source energy representation.
Anyway, cool vid, Lockstin! I'm hyped for dragon month

That was both interesting and a pleasure to read. Nice theory!
I agree with this it sounds right
It also fits in with how all but one Dragon type move are damaging moves, and that one status move represents the increase of pure physical power by increasing Atk and Spd. (Dragon Dance)
KriegsMeister27 yeah, plus moves like dragon rage, literally just a dragons rage, twister, a harsh unnatural hurricane, and dragon claw, which is described as a slashing with huge claws.
Outrage is also one of the more obvious examples, with them trashing around to attack. Most of the dragon type moves basically represent a rampage of an incredibly powerful Pokémon.

It’s interesting to note that Arceus created the jewel of life by combing the five plates of grass, water and ground (for crops of course) as well as electric to energise the jewel, and... dragon, indicating that whatever the dragon type entails is essential for life in general, further supporting lockstins arguement that dragon represents life energy or mana

Maybe since Lucario can learn a few dragon moves, dragon energy is similar to aura?
Dragon Energy = Life Energy = Aura Energy?
@@shaesullivan. Not nessesarily. I believe dragon energy, aura energy, etc. are derived from the same energy source. Pokemon like Lucario can either release the energy in a blast of raw power like a dragon, (Dragon Pulse) or hone it into a more refined, controlled state (Aura Sphere). It also seems like Lucario can use other type attacks with his aura, (Bone rush) and essentially transform the aura into other forms. It's like every Pokemon can draw from the aura according to their type, but Lucario has the connection to the aura pure enough to manipulate it. The Pokedex does say every living thing has an aura. So you are correct. Dragon energy and aura energy are both types of life energy, but aura is more refined.
I agree, Aura Energy seems like a more refined type of Dragon Energy, or Life Energy. I also feel that Lucario is a master of both Dragon and Aura Energy, and that he should be recognized as some sort of deity in the past. Too bad he isn’t. Unless ‘Lucario and the Mystery of Mew’ counts.
For what I know, both energies come from “mana” the life force (or something alike) and the power of dragon Type is pure mana, as strong and “raw” as it can be, being fired towards you. The aura would be a little bit more canalized mana, not so powerful, but still pure enough for it not to be considered as “fairy” or “light magic”
@@draco1965 Aura is obviously more refined than Dragon energy. My thoughts are that Lucario can release his aura in a less concentrated blast to attack enemies. Thus he can learn dragon pulse.
I know other comments have probably covered this, but since you brought up D&D and Sorcerers so often its time for a fun fact from D&D:
One of the most common ways for a character to have Sorcerer powers? A bloodline connection... to a dragon.

In Eastern myths dragons are generally made up of all the natural elements, trees, grass, and mountain streams: they also tend to be a mish mash of animal parts, fish whiskers, bird claws, and snakes. So it would make sense for them to be weaker against fire, metal, or gold.
The Dragon-Type is my all-time favorite type. I grew up watching a lot of fantasy, cartoons and anime that showcased dragons as this unstoppable, badass, fearsome and fascinating creatures. I loved how they were depicted in other cultures an media. Some may live underwater, others can't fly and live on the ground, some can shoot lightning or ice instead of fire. There's so much you an do with dragons design and lore wise. It's also the reason why I love the "How to Train you Dragon" franchise so much.

With the thought that dragons use this raw arcane power might add a valid explanation to why Fairy is super effective. Fairy is also assumed to be the "magic" type, but maybe leaning more towards manipulation of magic rather than forcing it. So if dragons bring out and utilize this raw magic fairy types just whisp it away (type immunity) or use it against the dragon its self (super effective).

YAAAAS
When approaching the subject of why dragon myths exist, I’m surprise that Lockstein didn’t bring up the theory of how ancient peoples would dig up dinosaur bones, and promptly freak the hell out.
Dragons across world mythology have a lot of variety, this was pointed out in the video, but they even had quite a bit of variety within individual nations. For example, when someone says "English dragon" most people immediately jump a variant of the classic European dragon, the one slain by Saint George of the Dragon in particular, but Great Britain (which gets its name from the old name of Britannia) has a lesser-known dragon in its own lore (one I'm hoping is referenced in Sword and Shield once the games have been released) called the Lampton Worm, it's described as having an earthworm-like body with the head of dragon, said body is described as actually being quite soft but to make up for this its body is said literally grow back together from wherever it was cut, the stories about that I found didn't mention it ever having a breath weapon though, which is odd since it is part of English lore.
In fact, in some cases, dragons were described as being linked with faeries in old European stories, modern interpretations would have them referred to as "faerie creatures" due to their strong link with unknown or supernatural forces.
Fun fact, for next month, Faerie was a general catchall for supernatural creature way back when. For crying out loud, Irish lore talks of the Dullahan (which is described as being a sort of manifestation of the aspect of death and is said to have the appearance of a headless rider with a headless horse or headless coach driver with a team of headless horses, it's said they keep their own heads in the saddle or nearby and use it like a lantern, I haven't found where the horse heads are kept though), Brownie (pronounced Broo-Nee, which described as a mischievous fey that will become a servant that literally works for scraps if you manage to catch it), and the Kelpie (the Irish Kelpie is described as being a black horse that has the ability to change its form between its natural form, a big black dog, and person dressed in all black that seeks to drown mortals in the waters they call home then rip out their livers to feed upon); and that's just Irish lore. English faerie lore has tales of the Spriggan, human-sized fey that have an aggressive warrior mentality and the ability to grow to the size of the tallest trees and was often claimed as a perpetrator of the changeling phenomenon; Germany has the tales of the Erl King and Kobolds (which are much different in their description in German lore than that of their classic Fantasy description that was popularized by D&D). And Hobgoblins are found all over European lore, especially England, Scotland, and Ireland and are very different from the portrayals usually given in classic Fantasy that was popularized by D&D.
Before the term Goblin meant the usually pint-sized green skinned critters with pointy ears we know today, the term way back in the Medieval and Renaissance eras was a term meaning "ugly faerie" and, this bit needs to be stressed for modern folks, elf was often used interchangeably with the word faerie because in those days elf and faerie meant the same thing for most of Europe, Elf had its own separate meaning in Scandinavia that was adopted by Tolkien for his stories when he got around to writing them.
So that would explain why Tapu Koko is Fairy type even if its the guardian deity of war, it seems that fae creatures being benevolent is a stereotype created by Peter Pan and old fairy tales books.
I really wish Gamefreak explored that more

Historically, wyvern and dragon as words are synonyms. The distinction everyone keeps pointing out is a "the media made this mainstream and now everyone thinks it's more specific than it has to be" situation, just like Lockstin mentioned about magic.
And Monster Hunter gets a few things in that regard wrong if you want to go by "generic" terminology, because what they call "Fanged Wyverns" anywhere else would be called a Drake.
Fun fact: Goodra being a snail-dragon (well, slug dragon) may be caused by it being a reference to the Lou Carcolh, a French dragon described as a massive snail/serpent hybrid with tentacles.

Lots of dragons in legends happen to actually breathe poison as opposed to fire. In the west at least. Fire and poison are both very destructive and thus seen as harmful/evil.
Your totally on it. In the Arceus movie, Arceus uses the dragon plate as part of the jewel of life because it knew dragon would make the jewel more powerful.

maybe because Arcane Energy/ Infinity Energy - the energy of which dragons harness are raw energies that haven't blended with nature yet (which is the concept of Mana from the other games) and the reason why they aren't able to use elemental magic, and can only use the raw one is because their aggresiveness cannot coexist with nature itself.
Awesome vid man. Keep it up!
Dragons continue to be one of my favourite mythical creatures, mostly because of the idea of them having extreme power that takes years to master, hence why many dragons are depicted as ancient. They are pretty much power made flesh.

I really liked that Jace reference and the other MTG references
Theres even a draconic bloodline subclass for sorcerer in fifth edition. Gives you fire resistance and wings
Doesn’t have to be fire resistance. The resistance is determined by what color that dragon is (black, blue, green, red, white, brass, bronze, copper, gold, or silver).
Lockstin: "Pokémon is for all ages... provided you can read."
11-year-old me, who is not a native English speaker: beats yellow without understanding the language
I always had the idea that every dragon type among cultures were different species and genus, like how asian dragons are rayquaza looking headass and western dragons are like zekrom or charizard(not dragon)
Lockstin:Dragon types only evolve by level up.
Kingdra: *AM I A JOKE TO YOU*
Seadra isn't dragon type. So it becomes a dragon by sort of fusing with the dragon scale item
I know your comment is a joke but if you had genuine wonder as to how that fits then, there you go
@@manta2117 seadra and horse are classified as dragons
Pokemon categories don't always follow pokemon types
@@manta2117 and scizor never gets affected by magnet pull because according to lockstin it is not made from metal instead its shell is hard as metal... What is your point exactly?
My point is he is right about every dragon TYPE evolving by level up. Seadra evolves into a dragon type through trade but is not in and of itself a dragon type
"GoT is just spicy LotR."
Hope you have your doors barricaded, my brother.
....the fandoms are coming...
That intro image reminds me of yugioh dark side of dimensions
Seto kaiba- “that’s because it’s not a monster.... it’s a GOD”
For everyone who's pointing out Kingdra, what he said was, "Dragon types only evolve through leveling up." The thing is Seadra isn't a dragon type and Kingdra is not known to be able to evolve.
You make a great point and that means with both Fariy and Psychic, we have three "magic" types
6:02 I still think that Slugma sprite looks like a 90’s Nickelodeon character, *change my mind*
No More beating around the bush... Piñata ad plays....
Well played
Oh man I'd love a new Arcane Type. with lots of special atacks and suports/dabuffs. Arcane pokemons may be more abstracts and bodyless, Likr a mana worm from wow for example
In D&D Dragons get their magical ability from being partially elemental beings, giving them control over a certain element or elemental energy to fuel their magical attacks.
13:01 lol this is like alkahestry and alchemy except alkahestry is powered by “the Dragon’s Pulse”
Sorcerers in D&D are Charisma-casters. Clerics and Paladins are Wisdom-casters.
Edit: :]
'-' yeah that bugged me,he was right other than the casting stats used by each
@@williamvalorious4403 I think he just misunderstood things, but the theory is right, just the stat is wrong. Sorcerers do magic by "self-learning" in a natural way. It just occurs to them.
@@raphaelmontinho6788 yeah but I mean it got it right in regards to the raw forced enegry vs the manupalated magic due to someones intelligents or "wisedom" as it sometimes get it called
