Are we sure Aarie isn’t a dog that was drowned in a sack? That’s also incredibly sad and seems to fit with the design. The ghost of the dog emerging from the sack.
@ oh my god! Yes! I think it’s probably that mixed with the dog concept. Especially considering the South/Meso-American inspirations for a lot of these designs.
19:25 I’m 100% willing to bet this pokemon was originally the one you’d find on mirage island instead of wynaut. If that island idea even existed at this point.
i get the feeling aarei was just made happier and turned into primarina 4 gens later due to blue seal dog, and then keromeelo and otoma were repurposed for the seismatoad line when gen five came around because of musical/vibration based tadpole to frog line. could just be me but that was my impression while looking at them in this video
too bad seismitoad line was a downgrade they're just a toad with lumps and don't even have a musical theme, they learn plenty of sound based normal type moves like hyper voice and uproar but that's it.
Maybe some inspiration went into it, but Primarina was made with Hawaii/Alola in mind. Also I can't be the only one who sees Bellibolt when I look at that frog right?
17:00. That's a better idea than what I thought. I was thinking it was a puppy in a sac that somebody drowned in the ocean, and it transformed into a siren like Johtos Beast trio
I don't think Charmander should count as "Real animal with Element slapped on" cause it's inspired off of the Fire Salamander, which were believed to be "Born from Fire"
Yeah, but do you see any animal breathe fire in the real world? No? That's why the element is slapped on even if it's inspired. Just like how the water bunnies in this video can be associated with water, but understandably don't spit water.
Can you think of any Rabbits that have a mythological or Folklore precedent for being associated with water in the same way that Fire Salamanders are associated with fire?
@Bysthedragon Okay, but just because it's associated with it, doesn't mean the element isn't slapped on. It just has a good reason as to why it does. Salamanders still don't breathe or are born from fire, that's a myth and there's plenty of pokemon based on myths which explains their typing.
@@MusicComet I feel like you are not understanding something. i think you misinterpreted clampearl and huntail, it seems to me like the throughline for the evolution is that they both use lures- i think the original clampearl *is* the clam, and the pearl with the "face" is the lure. the clam uses its tongue (with a fake face) to lure prey into its own mouth, and evolves into a pokemon that does the same with its tail. when gorebyss was added they changed clampearl because it didn't tie in with gorebyss at all, but it made the gimmick more confusing : /
That spiky kangaroo rat could definitely be the starting point for Togedemaru. A lot of these beta designs are similar to Pokémon we did eventually get. Like the sad water dog sounds a lot like Primarina and the musical frogs like the Seismitoad line.
I am shocked you didn't mention Bonsly once when talking about Kanbok - it may be different in concept and details, but the surface-level appearance is so close! Also, I thought Aarei looked really pretty, I think I would have loved it, potentially sad design origins aside.
Actually I think it’s supposed to be a bandana, and would’ve been more the signature pokemon for team aqua. Would match the bandana they wear on their heads. Heck, it’s hat looks like a pirate hat.
That “Alabama banning California stuff” analogy sort of misses that Japan spent time trying to forcibly subsume and replace Korean culture. This makes the Korean hostility to Japanese cultural influences more understandable.

Ninfu's design strongly reminds me of Q-Bee from Darkstalkers. And considering that Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire first came out just five years after Q-Bee made her debut in Darkstalkers 3, maybe it's possible Game Freak took some inspiration from her when they designed Ninfu?
The south america connection its interesting because as a kid i always wondered if the kyogre/groudon beef was inspired by a local myth (chiloe, chile) about two god snakes who fought by rising the sea levels and the mountain ranges
There's a theory that originally a sound type was going to be introduced in gen 3. Just look at all the sound inspired mons(a frog with a note, teeths on yeti's foot look like soundwave, etc) that could explain some sound inspired mons but they ultimately decided to not any more types. If they actually added sound type in gen 3 could that mean they would've added a new type each gen which tbh would make things complicated and kinda hard to come up with an type that would work lol
17:40 Is that like a beta Tympole? Like a design they made many years ago that got reworked into Tympole in Black and White? You know... actually ...probably not...
I'd love to see shomagune (36:29) reworked into a steel/water regional krabby, maybe with a regional Japanese spider crab evolution that has a crane magnet as his big claw.
It should get a signature move that traps their opponent and increases their defense sharply. It's kind of like an iron defense and a block combined. And it would have to 100% have the magnet pull ability.
44:13 From the looks of it, Heppy and Supanku moreso resemble rich accessory dogs that were a big pop culture thing in the early 2000s, with Heppy being a chihuahua and Supanku being Afghan Hound-inspired.
Honestly, it would fit as a really neat ghost type. And, it could've evolved by collecting more bones (possibly given to it by the player) to build a skeleton to stand up with that could give it an extra typing. Plus, a green slime doing that kinda thing gives me D&D slime monster vibes.
11:20 why does almost no one mention that this pokemon was bug psychic (it was grass type at one point but later changed to bug psychic before being fully cut) like, that's so cool, a bug psychic type in gen 3, and, it was a bug that mimiced a plant, the opposite of lourantis
18:30 Would love to see this as like a Golurk regional variant. Where it’s ghost grass or rock grass and is like a mossy rock elemental. That would be really cool.

Nobinyobi looks like a very early Jirachi to me, mostly just by the head shape and the long bits of, I guess, hair resembling the bits that trail behind Jirachi
Aarei being a super early version of Primarina is crazy, Plapass in concept of flying Laprass would make for a neat Convergent. I NEED Yakkoko to come back as baby for the Bug/Dragon type.
Funny enough, and assuming this is true, beta Breloom had to be changed because it looked to much like a Chocobo. Which I can see. I do like how in retrospect, Tropius is so peak because it was originally gonna be a three stage evolution line. Maybe they could try that again, but have it be the middle stage. Yakkoko is so damn cute, I’m a little saddened that it was cut. Hanteeru actually has a second sprite, the tail is modified to look more like Gorebyss in a Catdog style. Makes it interesting that they split them apart
33:08 Torchin kind of looks like an early dunsparce design. It has a similar color pallet and vacant stare and dunsparce is a weird cross between the Azetc serpent god Quetzalcoatl (and possibly Xiuhcoatl as well) and the Japanese snake cryptid known as tsuchinoko.
17:26 you didn’t mention it but the intestines also make a treble cleft, which could then make it associated with cleftkey’s bass cleft shape. Love the line, I hope it’s done in the future
Flane must have evolved into Ryllidy right? They have the same pink and green color. They both read emotions. Also I wonder if that line about being raised by someone with a bright heart was setup for Wally.
Well, according to the rest of the leaks, Ryllidy did have a pre-evolution... But it was Galbi/Biskyal, the Jynx-ass thing. I don't get the logic behind this either. Flane is unrelated to these two. Also according to the leaked early Pokemon list, the concept of giving Wally a Physic-type signature Pokemon has existed since April 2002, when both Ryllidy and Flane were still things, but there was no name attached to these Pokemon so they couldn't be either Flane or Ryllidy. If they ever considered giving either of them to Wally, it seems like they would've been supporting team members instead. And while Ralts' scratchpad does have a scrapped Pokemon in it, it's the Psycho Dog and what seems to be its pre-evolution of all things. Weird stuff!
26:09 yeah no, Koreans do have some valid reasons for holding a grudge That said it should become history, yet it isn't because those old resentments have not been adressed properly
46:06 the editor in me really liked the Aliased crop of this section. The edges of each sprite sheet insert is pixelated and I know a lot of video editing programs try hard to avoid that, throwing as much anti-aliasing at you as possible. Neat stylistic decision to avoid that and intentionally alias it anyway!
17:22 Keromello's tongue/intestine shape actually resembles a Treble Clef, a music symbol that is commonly seen if you aren't a bass instrument lol. Kind of makes sense considering it's pre-evo is a music note shaped pokemon
This is great video, but I'm gonna nitpick that explanation of why Korea censored Japanese culture in media was some real bs. I get not wanting to get into the why of it all, but like don't dismiss the historical and cultural context with finger quotes and snark.

Honestly, I love Aarel! While the idea behind it might be Silky, I also feel like it might have been influenced by a Kelpy. Also, Poochi is very cute.
26:55 Spiral staircase, rhinoceros beetle, desolation Row, fig tart, rhinoceros beetle, Via Dolorosa, rhinoceros beetle, singularity point, Giotto, angel, hydrangea, rhinoceros beetle, singularity point, secret emperor
Some of these cut Pokemon look like they could have made it to the final game or saved for future entries imo!
After seeing the bowling ball spheal and the pin penguins, I kinda want a regional variant of spheal and eiscue to make this idea become real
I think that early seadot would be a really cool regional variant.
26:09 yeah no, Koreans do have some valid reasons for holding a grudge
That said it should become history, yet it isn't because those old resentments have not been adressed properly
So many are so neat and you could also see why some design features were scrapped.
31:20 Luxray?? is that you?!
Evolotto looks like a baby pokemon or a pre-evo for beta arceus
That’s actually so smart, especially since Arceus has “various forms”
Wow, I didn't expect a Gen III Beta Tympole line.
Aarei's name could be a nod to Disney's Ariel and could also be Peta Primarina another selkie pokemon.
still waiting for the My Singing Monsters explained video
Wake up! Wake up! the Wublins!
You seem like a plapass
26:00 ouch that ignorance gave me whiplash. liked the video so far otherwise
