His favorite Pokemon was altaria but said he was very disappointed when he figured out that the biggest reason it was dragon type is because it supposedly meant it was a dragon that ascended from the clouds and the cloud was swooped down with it😢
Turtonator could also be based on Gamera, the Japanese pop culture character. Gamera is a kaiju like Godzilla, but instead of being a dinosaur, Gamera is a giant turtle that can turn the holes in it's shell into rocker jets, similar to how Turtonator can use his nose as a canon, has explosive spikes on his shell, and is overall shaped like comicbook explosion. If being a dinosaurs makes you a valid dragon type, so does being a kaiju
Altaria also seems like it fits the "Dragons are Magical Creatures" schtick. Though I do have a feeling that if the Fairy Type existed when Altaria was being designed, it would probably be Flying/Fairy instead of Dragon.
The English name doesn't inspire its typing. The typing inspires the name. Altaria wasn't going through the design process based on a name it eventually got from being renamed.
I think a possible reason for the type come from the fluffy cloudy things on it's body. They make it look somewhat like a fairy and since the fairy type didn't existed back then und fairies are mystical beeings just like dragons it got the dragon type.
I was thinking of Altaria getting it dragon type base on the eastern dragon the Storm dragon base on that usually appear in a storm cloud. and according to the myth most never seen it true form cause of how much cloud surround the dragon, but i also like the idea of the Pendragon typing

But Turtonator’s whole thing is about setting traps and being defensive. Isn’t salemence the one who flies around on rampages burning everything in sight? Or Hydreigon for that matter too?
Turtonator does have a sense being a dragon, because of chinesse myths, the Hyunmu or Mountain turtle is also known as a land dragon, and Turtonator can be a reference of that but with a volcano, the only main difference is the volcanic reference of spewing fire(lava) and toxic gasses from it's nostrils
Most of the comparisons to dinosaurs are correct but the dictononts were mammals and Carcharodontosaurus Was pronounced car-cara-dontosaurus not carcher-odontosaurs
I always thought Turtonator was based on Tarasque. This is a mythical beast from a French legend. It is described as a dragon-like beast with spiked armor on its back. It is said to have killed eight brave peasants with a blast of fire, which would explain the Fire type.
Alolan exeggutor makes sense to me, long ago, some dragons transformed into trees. Then they didn't untransform, so their descendants didn't realize they weren't trees.

He talked about that cloud dragon stuff when he was doing amphoros but why didn’t he talk about it when explaining altaria, which was far more fitting with that reasoning
About Mega-Ampharos: "There are dragons [...] associated with clouds" About Altaria: "It's a cloud bird!" Birds are descendant from dinosaurs. They stand on their hindlegs and have wings on their forelimbs, effectively making them real life wyvern. Also, how did you manage to talk about stars, not mentioning, that the name is a reference to "Altair", the brightest star in the Aguila ("EAGLE"!) constellation. However, the point that really makes it dragon type for me is the similatiry to the Alkonost. Often referred to as "bird of happiness" it proclaims gods will in the russian orthodox church. Some say hearing it's song makes you forget everything around you, which is similar to many of Altarias dex entries, saying it leaves people who hear it's song in a "dreamlike state". And a messenger of a god is no less dragon worthy than - say- Zygarde, based on Jörmungandr, which is just a big-ass snake, tasked to coil around the world to keep it safe.

Sceptile being part Dragon type was something that I wanted for years, and even though it's 4x weak to ice, I was still stoked that OR/AS finally made it a reality. The Treecko line is part of the Dragon egg group, so there's also that.
Yet it doesn't learn Dragon Dance (It should! Even though it doesn't really have any need to use it. SD is just better at its speed tier) while the Totodile line learns it and _isn't even in the Dragon egg group._ That said, I could've seen the nonexistent Feraligatr Mega as part Dragon for the same reason as Zard and Scept (to make another Grass-Fire-Water starter trio w/ them).
Dragons were based on snakes. The english word for dragon comes from the greek word for serpent. Original tales has dragons breathe poison, not fire. Akin to a venomous snake.
Starly dragons from the east, though serpentine, are actually based on feathered coelurosaur bones. Also if you look at dragons like Smauk the Dragon he looks more like a hybrid of a Quetzalcoatlus, Giganotosaurus ,raptor, and plateosaurus than a snake
@@stegotyranno4206 The chinese character for eastern dragon (龍) is based on the design that of a snake aswell as the pronounciation (Long) being derived from the word for serpent. Not to mention eastern and western dragons are incredibly different, just that european travelers thought "oh hey these look our mythological dragons!" One of the major differences is that dragons are savage beasts who destroy everything in the west while dragons of the east are holy divine creatures. Smaug is from a book series that is less than a century old, so he can be based on dinosaurs since its actually way later than their discovery.
One thing that can explain some Dragon reasoning is the whole idea of "Half bloods" Dragons in some stories do have children that are only half dragon but do maintain some dragon powers. While this is not the best way to bail out the pokemon, it does help some reasoning out when not looking fully dragon like.
silly english people, using their inconsistent pronounciation to pronounce foreign words P.S. i'm German and still triggered by "kindergarten", "zeitgeist/poltergeist" and "rucksack"
Turtonator has a really good reasoning for the Dragon typing, because in Asian cultures states that they're actually descendants of the 4 lion turtles that gave us our worlds 7 continent's and magical gifts, who were said to all be Dragon turtles
I think anything reptilian could be a dragon "type", since a dragon type doesn't have to be a actual dragon, like how fire types don't have to be actual fire

Altaria was inspired by Chinese dragon so it would still be dragon
It's mega is dragon/fairy
I think another reason for Altaria’s type comes from it’s name being a reference to King Arthur, or Alterian, Pendragon.

Birds are descendant from dinosaurs.
