I am convinced that Altaria's dragon typing is (in part) due to its inspiration being a mythical creature, with the dragon-type acting as the mythical-creature-type at the time. Its definitely not airtight, as your reasoning regarding Tyl in Draco is certainly a contributing factor. But I am certain that if Altaria were released today it would be Fairy/Flying instead due to fairy also being a type that heavily taps into mythology.
To me, that would be more boring. I love the idea of a bird being considered a dragon.
Yep Altaria is based on the cocatrix it's sort of a chicken dragon. If I remember well it's from France
You put mega ampharos in that weird named category because there were gentle dragons that have wooly clouds. That is the literal description of altaria
P
“Id like to see you explain altaria”
Explains altaria
Oh
The Atrocious Disaster Bruh Moment
Altaria is a Cockatrice. It has two legs, a long serpenty neck, and a rooster's head. On top of that it learns Dragonbreath upon evolution and the Cockatrice is said to be able to kill people by breathing on them.
@@ostensiblyaverage5576 Cockatrice are said to turn those who look at it into stone. It's would've been a poor choice anyways since it is a rooster with a body and tail of a snake and draconic wings, so it looks nothing like Altaria.
Plus, there isn't anything generally fluffy on a cockatrice; just normal chicken feathers on its head and legs, and Cockatrices don't even have fluffy wings.
@@aneitalt I'd say those are likely stylistic choices, afterall every pokemon doesn't need to look exactly like what it's based on. It's also better reasoning than something like Alolan Exeggutor so I think it's unfair to put it in a catagory beneath it.
@@aneitalt Well a gentle one of them would have fluffy cloud surrounding it. Just watch the video back. He says why Altaria is a dragon on Ampharos, then totally ignores it.

Turtonator could also be based on Gamera, the Japanese pop culture character. Gamera is a kaiju like Godzilla, but instead of being a dinosaur, Gamera is a giant turtle that can turn the holes in it's shell into rocker yets, similar to how Turtonator can use his nose as a canon, has explosive spikes on his shell, and is overall shaped like comicbook explosion. If being a dinosaurs makes you a valid dragon type, so does being a kaiju
valid. i even feel like kaiju > dinosaur when it comes to dragon typing validity

Fun Fact: Because Palkia, Giratina, and Dialga are the guardians of existence and arceus' buddies i guess, youll notice their second typing also represents the basic states of matter. Dialga, steel, solid; Palkia, water, liquid; And Giratina, ghost, gas/plasma/antimatter
Yea
So that's why Palkia is Water type
I 100% thinks that The strongest dragon type pokemon is eternatus without a doubt and that is because eternatus is a poison/dragon type legendary pokemon and eternatus is a skeleton dragon that has powers to control time and space and eternatus is basically a serpentine skeletal dragon that can kill You. So beware of eternatus.
@@kerrywien6775 That's not what we were talking about here. We're just talking about the logic behind the Crown Trios types.
But, while we're in this new topic, Steel/Dragon is a better type combo than Poison/Dragon. Steel covers all of Dragons weaknesses defensively and is super effective against two of them, Fairy and Ice. Poison only helps against Fairy. Dialga is only weak to Fighting and Ground and has an immunity, while Eternatus is weak to Ground, Psychic, Ice and Dragon and has no immunity.
Also, Eternatus doesn't have time/space powers. I don't know where you got that from.

"Dragons are really just magical dinosaurs"
I mean... Yeah. Given the theories about how dragon myth evolved, that's pretty much on point
Turtonator does have a sense being a dragon, because of chinesse myths, the Hyunmu or Mountain turtle is also known as a land dragon, and Turtonator can be a reference of that but with a volcano, the only main difference is the volcanic reference of spewing fire(lava) and toxic gasses from it's nostrils
I think another inspiration for the goomy line is RPG progession where you start off fighting weak slimes then end up fighting legendary dragons.
I get the confusion with Altaria, but it actually is based off a dragon called a cockatrice. They are small, chicken like dragons that had breath that could turn someone to stone, which is why it has always learned dragon breath, a move witha chance to paralyze, at the same level swablu evolves into it since gen 3.
Yeah it actually makes sense to me
I never thought Altaria was a Cockatrice! Makes perfect sense!
Also, Peng is sometimes depicted as a literal flying fish with wings. So what is a giant fish with bird wings made from clouds? Anything but Normal/Flying and in the eastern mythology, dragons are more associated with the sea, storms, and wind which is what a flying bird-looking fish thing is. Altaria is also likely based on that Belgium play featuring a magical bluebird which further makes it mythical plus, there's already a bird dragon like you mentioned so why not make it a dragon.
Not really, it lacks some snake features to make it a cockatrice. And yes, I do know the difference between it and a basilisk.

Altaris is the former name of Delta Draconis, a star in the draco constellation.
I always thought Turtonator was based on Tarasque. This is a mythical beast from a French legend. It is described as a dragon-like beast with spiked armor on its back. It is said to have killed eight brave peasants with a blast of fire, which would explain the Fire type.
I thought it was Bowser.

Also, I absolutely love altarias reason for being a dragon type although I'm biased. I love altaria, it was one of my first shiny pokemon

Altaria is dragon because they didn't have the fairy typing at the moment so they gave it the next magical raice

@Wolf World Blackyy nah far too lazy a excuse. Altaria should already Just be Fairy.

the jewel theory HAS to be true for dragonite, the comparison is too solid for it not to be
Turtonator has a really good reasoning for the Dragon typing, because in Asian cultures states that they're actually descendants of the 4 lion turtles that gave us our worlds 7 continent's and magical gifts, who were said to all be Dragon turtles
Drampa is not normal just because of mundaneness, he is normal because of his elemental neutrality. A lot of other dragon types have another element, but drampa is elementally neutral. Thus making him normal type.
Why is elementally neutral different than pure dragon?
@@shikamarurules12 probably because he learns moves from nearly every type
I'm not sure. It's possible drampa is not COMPLETELY dragon. Just is mostly dragon or something.
Almost every Dragon type Pokemon learns a plethora of moves of many different types, including pure Dragon types, heck, even the dual type Dragonite learns more moves from other types rather than Flying.
So no, Drampa is Normal type becuase its a grandpa, so in Gamefreak eyes, boring and lame.
Most dragon types are mystical guardian types or very aggressive/combat oriented right?
Drampa... plays with kids and keeps em safe. Maybe its normal because it chose a more "normal" lifestyle?
There's a thing in Chinese mythology called a dragon turtle. That would probably help to explain Turtonator.

There's also Tarasque from France, he's really turtle-like.
Also, it contains volcano-like powers... That's very draconic for me.

I know this video is 2 years old, but I feel like someone should make a sister video to this explaining how some non-dragon Pokemon *could* be dragon types based on their appearances and in-game descriptions.
Altaria suits flying/dragon perfectly in my opinion. I am glad Pokémon started doing flying type as the 1st type.
Doduo/Dodrio should have been the only normal first flying second flying Pokémon.
I also felt that in Gen 2 a lot was lost by not adding Dark and Steel to more pre-existing Pokémon.

I actually had a buddy who went to visit Japan for 2 years because he liked a lot of Japanese lore and culture and he loved to talk to me about a lot of the Pokemon that had the dragon type because that was his favorite type. His favorite Pokemon was altaria but said he was very disappointed when he figured out that the biggest reason it was dragon type is because it supposedly meant it was a dragon that ascended from the clouds and the cloud was swooped down with it😢
Garchomp actually belongs in the first category, cause it’s design is heavily based on Wyverns. Gabite and Garchomp both have a similar wing design to Wyverns. It’s body type in general is more inspired in Wyverns which makes it a dragon type.
One thing that can explain some Dragon reasoning is the whole idea of "Half bloods" Dragons in some stories do have children that are only half dragon but do maintain some dragon powers. While this is not the best way to bail out the pokemon, it does help some reasoning out when not looking fully dragon like.

Therefore, Altaria is a dragon.
Ha good point
Most of the comparisons to dinosaurs are correct but the dictononts were mammals and Carcharodontosaurus
Was pronounced car-cara-dontosaurus not carcher-odontosaurs

Me: dragon turtle
Speaking of which, the mythical Tarasque (which the D&D creature is only loosely based on) is often depicted with a turtle shell.

As far as I know, Ampharos Dragon type was referencing his electric/dragon type from beta versions of Gold/Silver, hence the "long sleeping dragon blood".
On a similar note, I think that Raikou, Entei, and Suicune dying and being reborn is a reference to the Gold and Silver beta, where they look drastically different.
@@inkmaster5480 Actually, while that might be the case, they were, according to some in-game lore, three Pokémon that died during the Fire in Burned Tower, in Ecrutaek. Ho-oh brought them back to life. It's not stated if they were already these legendary beasts before being ressurected, or if such power came only as a result from being ressurected by Ho-oh, though.
He said "Puff the Magic Dragon" But showed a picture of Pete's Dragon...
Yeah first thing I thought was... thats not Puff thats Elliot
Zygarde’s name is also a play on the term “Zygote” which brings in its cell based abilities
Originally, Ampharos was going to be an electric dragon type, but they changed it to just electric type
Interesting how a sheep is a dragon type
You forgot to say about nagandel evolves when it learns dragon pulse. So when it gets access to dragon power it becomes a dragon

I love the Goomy line, they're easily my favorite dragon types xD Especially the Hisuian forms!!
Okay, Altaria is one of if not my alltime favorite Pokemon, and I love that it’s dragon type. Okay, I know it’s not a good reason exactly, but it saved it from being another boring normal/flying type. I probably wouldn’t love it as much if it wasn’t dragon type

This one is a dragonfruit tree
@AAAnt M Coca the dragon boogeyman from Portugese folklore, whose name is the origin of the coconut.
I actually like the reason for Altaria being a dragon. It's kinda poetic and also very pretty having such a not at all obvious and hidden origin. I would actually appreciate if there where more pokemon like that.
FlareSilva Or it was that, as he said earlier in the video when discussing Amphoras, eastern dragons can be associated with clouds... and Altaria is basically a cloud
Looks like a fairy dragon actually
Charizard: there's an impostor among us.
Altaria: **slowly backs away**
Charizard isn't even a dragon, kinda in fact it's origin is not even based on a dragon at all
Charizard is the one to talk. It's only a dragon because of it's egg group.

IKR...The only part I didn't like or were disagreeing about of the entire otherwise elaborative and accurately and rational explained video...yeah...lol....
Well,I think Goomy and Sliggo should be in "the not dragon type, but it still is"-category, then, if even mega Sceptile is in it,I suppose, despite your also really really tiny explanation origins (of the medieval age inspired snail you came with) and the even more non-existing or way more difficulty that occurs, when it comes to their psychical origin/appearances..Hmm. What is your stand there and can I have an slightly elaborated explanation why those who, specifically ,aren't in that category of yours?..Whatta you know?..😅🤷♂️😉💎🌈

Great minds think alike.
Yeah. I mean, how could he talk about an evil 3 headed dragon creature without meantioning the king of evil 3 headed dragons/creatures?
I thought we were gonna get a Gamera reference with Turtonator.
Turtonator is a dragon turtle and has the precident of being the sleeping dragon in a volcano that if you wake it, it will destroy everything.
There are also dragon-turtles in China that bring good luck with money.
That description *kinda* sound like groudon I have no idea why I made this comment tbh
@@rylancromer184 I meant the sleeping dragon in a volcano waking up it will destroy everything sor e
I was yelling at the screen when I heard him say that
But Turtonator’s whole thing is about setting traps and being defensive. Isn’t salemence the one who flies around on rampages burning everything in sight? Or Hydreigon for that matter too?
For me it was unfair that Mega-Aggron was not given a dragon type or was incorporated instead of the rock type in the normal Aggron or in Lairon, which logically should have it, its name in Japanese, its appearance, and description are of that type.
Ok, im gunna say it: Flyon needed to be bug dragon.

I expected "Just Reptiles" to be a category
Because several dragons are just just reptiles
As a welshy, i can confirm, dragons mean everything to us and its definitely not because it was like half of our folk lore and massive medieval story telling.
I’m sorry but the fact you called yourself a “Welshy” is making me giggle
