Oxhorn, if you travel to the South Mountain Lookout, there is a note on the the bed in the Tower. It was from a ranger right after the war, who talks about how his dog went missing and he's going to find him.
Of course, you don't know where the dog was taken... until you look at the map on the wall. There is a knife stabbed into a point on the map, so I traveled to where the dagger was stabbed. And well...
That's how I found Lucky Hole.

If only I had better memory I could recall the proper title. This is most certainly a Lovecraft reference, with the protagonist excavating some hideous, alien being in a basement. He destroyed it with lye and fire. Too bad that's not a sidequest. Gather up a bunch of Abraxo cleaner and flamer fuel to temporarily annihilate an eldritch horror.

Instead of spawning him at the event, it spawned him inside the mine, behind the locked gate. We got lost, trying to get out, and found the tentacle monster by accident. Scared the crap outta us, because all the monsters respawned and we kept getting lost. We kept saying that the monster was changing the tunnels and were keeping us down there. Took us like an hour to finally find the exit

This may have been one of my favorite locations and experiences in all of FO76. I really hope to see DLC for this. I could see this cult as a good way to introduce human NPCs. Maybe some of the cultist were hidden in another cave not yet discovered.
Note: I am good with no human NPCs upon release. But, as we "rebuild America" it would be nice to see more quests about rebuilding America. We could then start to see settlements being built up and NPCs starting to occupy them. The current state of the game is about defeating the scorched and exiting the vault. So it would make sense to start rebuilding after defeating the scorched (or greatly weakening).

It's almost a reference to The Shunned House by Lovecraft, where an abandoned house has a horrible history of illness and death and at the end of the book the main character uncovers a monstrous forearm in the dirt celler. Clearly this connects to the Dunwich Burrowers place in Fallout 4, maybe it's a race of beings? The face we find in the Dunwich mine isn't the creature itself but maybe an icon, which means whatever makes that place home is still buried and wasn't uncovered in time before the war.
Ooooo i love it when Bethesda add this Lovecraftian references to the game.

It one of the more haunted locations in fallout 4. I respect that. It is much more difficult to piece together lore in this game than the others.

It's because Oxhorn's a good story teller, adding the emotion this game sadly lacks and he's gotten very good at editing. Which helps cut out the tedium of the run here click, now run there click monotony the game design delivers. Oxhorn is the Rumplestiltskin of 76...

Something about this gets me thinking of the game Night in the Woods. I mean, obviously, the Lovecraftian trope of creepy cults in mines and caves worshiping eldritch demons is not new, it's something we've seen in other Fallout games previously. I guess it's just the fact that there are more explicit references to the forest, to poison, to springs of water that may be creating the association in my mind.

I wonder if the recurring saying, "War never changes," is because it has been the same war for thousands or millions of years - between Lovecraftian gods of Chaos, as they vie for greater influence over the physical world. A Great Game even bigger than the one Lockhart referred to.
Or maybe it's just a repeating homage to Lovecraft.

Hey Ox, not sure if you've figured this out yet, but this seems to be Elder Scrolls easter eggs, and they're scattered throughout the Fallout series. They're the same bronze faces we've seen in other places like the Dunwich Borers tunnels and on the sides of some buildings, etc. The vines can be found in other places in 76 too, connected to strange totems. They seem to be a reference to the Dwemer or maybe Lorkhan. Probably some one of the Elder Scrolls gods at least, considering they refer to it as "interloper", which is usually used to refer to gods from foreign pantheons. Maybe they're trying to suggest some kind of dimensional connection between the two worlds to Mundus that has gotten stronger since the bombs dropped, I don't know. Maybe you should also do Elder Scrolls lore videos?

Elder scrolls or Fallout, Bethesda loves them huge imposing faces and heads. Why don't they sell them in the atomic shop as a camp decoration I wonder.

i think the "turtle" on the plaque is a mining helmet. the "head" is a beam of light and the "legs" are straps. the giant heads looks alot like the dragonpriest masks or dwemer masks from skyrim.

Fallout 3: Dunwich Mansion, where we find a totem used to destroy the Krivbeknih
Fallout 4: Dunwich Borers, where we have visions of a cult and find the first of those faces
    Fallout 76: This
Can't wait for the next Fallout game, we'll probably have to fight that thing and its brethren

Bless you, Oxhorn. Finding the beauty in this game and sharing it so I don't waste my money on this good. ...Looks like what we now think of when we think of a Wendigo. The totems, at least. And I think people agree. I Googled to make sure I spelled it right and one of the auto finishes was "Fallout 76". But they don't usually have that....face you saw in any form of lore. Corrupted by radiation? The followers do something to it? Or just Fallouts way of taking something that has become popular thanks to newly found public interest thanks to media and making it just unique enough that it's recognizable but refreshingly different?

Could this be another "Harold-like" creature? The note that reads "he is the one that came before". Maybe he came to be before the bombs? Product of some experiment?
It appears something out of the Cthulhu mythos, true, but the tree references to me in the fallout universe usually had to do with Harold...
