I got really excited when I found Welch. My old man was born there in 1948, never thought I'd get to go there in a fallout game. Now I need to head there in real life!

@@CavingIn2022 nah. My grandfather was a miner and dad saw how sick it made him. He moved across the mountain to Virginia and became a mechanic. Which from what I know about old miners is ok in my book.

That mine explosion you mentioned is almost certainly a nod to the real-life mine explosion in Welch in 1946.

I found the recording to be incredibly chilling. As you say, Duchess was being very "nice" to the child, but what was actually happening was awful. I hope Betty wasn't murdered while the girl was buying the drinks, but either way, something awful was going to be done to the girl's mother by Butch. Butch did NOT sound like he relished the task. I came here to check if this really is the Duchess from the Wayward, and I guess it is. If you go to the Inn after completing the quest and ask her what she did before the war, her answers are vague but pointed; you do NOT want to meet the woman from Welch known as Duchess. Plus the Wayward Duchess, when pressed, says that she used to be "in pharmaceuticals".
I do think the voices sound different though. The Duchess at the Inn sounds younger and smoother voiced, while to me the Duchess on the tape has a little more aged "crack" in it. I may be imagining it, or maybe running an Inn suits her.
I found the note that Ox was looking for, sitting right by the holotape, but this is a couple of years later so they have fixed it by now.

Welch is a great location for robotic loot from all of the strikebreaker corpses-very handy for free Fusion Cores and circuitry.

The unlootable 'magazine' in Gary's room is worth a zoom in. If you look closely it appears to be pages from a table-top RPG named Geckos and Gamma Radiation or some such.
I'm not sure if there's an official pen-and-paper Fallout RPG. I kind of hope that's an Easter egg of an upcoming real-world product. Maybe done by Paizo on the Starfinder system.
@@KK-qm1mr. The thing you're referring to in the first half is Fallout: Wasteland if I remember correctly. What OP just described is likely to just be the Fallout universe equivalent of D&D, which makes sense.
I hope we get some lore on just who the mole miners are.
I think he's done that already, maybe not a video centered around them but he has explained them in a previous video
They are people encased in ragged remnants of mining environmental suits who survived the war deep underground and over the years mutated from the radioactive elements that nuclear mining created.
They are mutated miners, who can't live confortably outside the suits. The ones in welch probably lived there prewar.
Hey Ox I know this will probably just get lost in all your other comments but I want to personally thank you for all the fallout lore content! You always cover your topics so throughly and you have such a great voice for narration, your videos are prefect for any occasion! And honestly I always listen to them when I’m going to bed, once again thank you Ox!
I enjoy the nod to West Virginia's struggles with mining companies, and how Bethesda really took time to research the history of our state, and how things look, etc. It's a game, and scale is not always the same, but... i am loving this game. The missions are actually frustrating... mt ADD/HD keeps checking out barns, houses, etc.

Hi Ox, Great video as always. I got confused when you talked about the holotape yesterday on Twitter, but there is ANOTHER (sorry for the caps) holotape of Duchess at the Rusty Pick (east of Relay Tower HG-B7-09). I confused the holotape you mentioned on twitter for this one, but now that I've seen the video I noticed you haven't mentioned it.
If you go to the basement past the room with the raider power armor it's in the final chamber after you kill the mole miners. It wasn't there two weeks ago (I've been to the rusty pick frequently these past few weeks), so it was most likely added after last week's patch. I'm not in the game at the moment, so I forget what it says, but it's definitely from her and it's new content.

How to dox your hometown 101
Welch reminds me of the real life town called Centralia, Pennsylvania. Its been burning underground for almost 60 years now.
You know of AMS was an ounce more considerate with the people of the town this situation probably never would have happened. Something along the lines of.
“Hey they we need you to relocate. I know you may not like it but your atop AMS property. The material we are mining is highly radioactive, and can be explosive. By simply staying here you are putting your lives on the line.”
14:31-15:54 I sure wasn't expecting Hynden Walch (the voice actress for Starfire in Teen Titans and Princess Bubblegum in Adventure Time) to end up in a Fallout game, let alone an Oxhorn video. Funny how you pick up on things like that.
Duchess: "My aren't you a sharp cookie." Agent Danger: "That doesn't sound like a particularly good cookie!" is probably my favorite little quip exchange in Fallout now. I have no idea why but man does it amuse me a lot.

For those who come here before building your Excavator Armor, there are a couple of Rich Black Titanium Veins in the upper main street, near the trashed Protectrons that you can't loot and the dead van with the duffle bag. Don't confuse them with the nearby Coal Vein.
@@loraelstad8941 The scrapped Sentrybot in front of the house with Duchess' stash spawns a fusion core. There are a number of other spawns as well - for instance, in the relay tower outside Flatwoods, one can be found atop one of the radio consoles. (I'm not giving away all my favorite spawn points, of course...)
Duchess is the same Duchess we meet in the Wayward quest line

In those notes, ray talks about "visitors" coming and going. All those people were probably hallucinations, except the bandaged man that brought th at last bottle of whiskey. I think that was Calvin Barlow after his encounter with the sheepsquatch

Whenever I hear the name gary, I instantly think about vault 108
spent a long time catching up with your 76 live streams, it's good to watch a lore video again. I've not ventured much into Welch yet, I'm only 36 or so and every time I go the mole miners are either too rough or the first time I was there a scorchbeast followed me from a player home to the train station!
I love how Ox does not break lore. He always says " pickerup truck" or corvega. His knowledge of the little things makes these videos so much fun to watch.
Oh and Pain Train. Love watching him blast into mobs.
To those that think there is nothing to do in the game.... Have you met Oxhorn? I doubt a fraction of those complaining have even the slightest clue on all this lore. Take the blinders off and actually SEE Appalachia for the wasteland it is. You might as well be on an barren alien planet discovering what happened to the people who were there. Same concept.

You should check the surrounding area as coalwood is around Welch somewhere. It’s the home to the rocket boys aka big creek missile company or something aka the movie October sky is based off. I believe the big creek high school is around there but it closed and sits abandoned as well as the mine coalwood is associated with.
That moment when your actually from the City of Welch lol, this shit is about right. They say a big ass mine shaft stretches the entirety of the town. Which is believable, you really need to come to my great state of West Virginia.

Since we know how radioactive heated ultrasite is , it wouldn't surprise me if this is where the mole miners came from. At the very least they had to have had some ghouls on their hands. That's why they data wiped at HQ and tried to sweep everything under the rug. Even in the fall out universe I'm fairly sure they would have lost all their contracts if people found out.
Whoever voices the Agent Danger kid sounds EXACTLY like the woman who voices Jack Marston (young version) in RDR2 I really have to wonder if it’s her

I'm sure its not just huts but it's not full of towers either. My guess is that it looks like a classic suburban area with rust and post apocalyptic look

Look at all the lore and stories fo76 has just because at the start it didn’t have npc’s doesn’t mean it wasn’t rich in story. People just didn’t want to explore I guess?

OX Just wanted to let you know I live on the real life #9 mine property. It is located in Farmington WV not Welch. Welch is where my Grandfather was from. I still live in the same house I grew up in. Anyway I love the Videos. Keep up the good work

It is very sad to see Mining Company act like that even in the Fallout universe but at least we can say there's one Mining Company actually cared about people in this game

really I kind of find that hard to believe because after my fifth time turning Welch over someone came up to me and told me where the tape was it wasn't in Welch for me anyway it was in the next town over

Mine shaft 9 the shaft that blew up in game may be a reference to the movie that may be based on a true story,but the movie is called mine 9 and I recommend the movie to anyone just be warned it’s kinda sad and gruesome.

It mutated so much it mutated back into a normal cat.
If you side with the raiders they will be guarding the house i went up there and i think a random encounter happened where a bunch of ghouls came out of nowhere

England basically turned into threads The old eighties nuclear disaster movie. Japan is now currently The Home of deathclaw-zilla A 70' tall death claw that has the capacity to exhale radioactive acid, But thankfully the people who survive there are able to avoid it due to it's very distinctive war cry before it attacks any town seeking to eat radioactive material
This got me back into Fallout 76 and ho-ly crap is there alot of story...
Robot mayors, miss nanny's looking for their lost charges, the total tragedy of the Responders, german towns looking for tourism revenue.
WTF, did most reviews start the game up, not get a dialogue tree in the first five seconds, and just decided "fuck this game?"
Honestly...I'll draw some flak here, but this is my favorite Bethesda Fallout. This is better than 3 or 4.
The enclave is more menacing, their is a strong emotional story, what with everyone in the wasteland trying to save the world and dying, the pre war stories are this right mixture of innocent people going about their days and unchecked corruption that ate away at society where this mix leaves you sad at the apocalypse, but still understanding that it just had to happen.
Honestly, the only thing missing IS a lack of a dialogue tree, but I honestly don't miss it. I dont think that npcs and conversations would enhance the story, more just take it away.
I agree that in a lot of cases dialog and choice would detract. My go-to scenario for that is the free-stater hunting down the ghouls. A typical rpg scenario would end up with you 'catching up' just as the final confrontation is playing out and you'd get the standard 'choice' to side with one side or the other, or a red skill level speech check to convince Duncan to let the ghouls live in peace. That's perfectly workable as a side quest as well, but in my opinion far less impactful than the final two holo-tapes were. On the other hand, for the main quest, that sort of decision making and branching narrative would be excellent, and while there was plenty of NPC interaction along the main quest (sort of) there was no actual impact or branching narrative. So overall, while I agree in terms of the type of content Fallout 76 specializes in, it does suffer a little more because of it in the areas 76 was already lacking.
Ever heard of show don't tell? This game does the opposite and tells you everything, why have an interesting story, characters, or players having actual choices besides shoot the enemy? Because that's how you make a game actually interesting and have people think beyond attacking everything.
